This past week my passport got lost in the mail.. sort of.. it didn't arrive on time. A staff member, by the name of Sitarah Clark, at the Cambridge, Central Square location was without a doubt so giving, kind, helpful, and worked tirelessly to find my package and to keep me informed on its status. I honestly don't know if I ever had better customer service in my life. Incredible experience, that made it easy to accept the circumstance, and to be mindful on what matters most in this crazy world. Like great human relationships! read more

This USPS is located in a convenient place: Central Square. Also opening hours is nice: open until 7 p.m. on weekdays. Extra points for opening until 7, because I can go there after work. Today I just stopped by to mail my first class international letter, so it was quick. No line. No complaints. read more

I had a large volume of envelopes to mail out and the staff was very patient in telling me in how to proceed. In particular I want to give a shout out to Jessica who very kindly helped me organized my stamps, explained the process for such a large order and even let me switch out the stamps to a more appealing image understanding that I was sending out invitations. Went to the post office today and bought a gift card. The gift card ended up freezing the computer so the lady who was trying to help me couldn't process it it was for $25. She was trying to be very helpful but customers were waiting and as a person who has done customer service in the past I was afraid that people in line were going to yell at me but they didn't, which I appreciate it on the other hand, she was trying to describe what happened to another coworker and he was being kind of harsh to her and it made me feel bad. I didn't end up getting the gift card but I appreciated her help. I've never really had any problems at the post office before so I was upset but got over it. I wouldn't necessarily recommend going to this post office because the customer service is either hit or miss but if you want to go to this post office, be my guess. The only reason that I go is because I have a PO Box for personal reasons. I will go back next week but I won't be purchasing another gift card as it messed up the system read more

I think the negative reviews are mainly because of the long lines. I'm pretty sure most people don't realize they have a self check out for mailing packages and buying postage because even when the regular line is epically long the self check out line is empty or really short. The downside to the self check out is that if you try to buy postage or a stamp size label, it will get stuck in that slot. And when it gets stuck and you try to tell the employees, they will likely say "Yeah, that happens" (and do nothing about it) like they did to me. The slot that spits out the larger labels, those for packages, works fine. And if the handle of the package drop bin is stuck it means it is full. Just leave it on the desk near a clerk and don't wait in line. Moral of the story- use the self check out for packages. For stamps, buy them at usps.com or at a drug or grocery store. read more

Wow.zers. I go to post office to pick up my certified mail, guy there tells me he can't find it and that the lady that handled certified mail during the day must know where it was place. He has me sign off for it to be delivered the following day. Two days later, nothing. Try calling them, no answer. read more

The people who work at this post office location couldn't be nicer or more helpful! I had an issue with a package delivery and Andy who works with the P.O. Boxes answered all of my questions and helped me figure out what the issue was even though it ended up being a FedEx problem. Great location! read more

Terrible terrible service and availability. They never pick the phone up. They never knock if a door is locked. They just say "business closed" and bring the package back. Will never use USPS in Cambridge again, especially for Amazon Prime orders, where the SLA is to deliver on the day specified when ordering. read more

Have used this post office for years and it's often abysmal, despite some good people working there. I suspect it's typical of most US post offices. Examples of some past experiences: went in to pick up a package for the first time, stood in a long line, finally got to the counter only to be told that package pickup is waaaaaaaay at the end of the room down yonder. I tell the clerk - and then a manager - that a sign pointing that out as customers come in would be helpful and get told that they can't just make one, a committee has to design and approve it! So I go waaaaaaaay down to the package pickup window and no one is there. I ring a bell. No one comes. I ring again and get snapped at for ringing the bell twice. Here's another, and I fault USPS for this one, not the Central q. post office: had a package sent to me from Scotland. Instead of going to ICS in New York, USPS sent it to Los Angeles on the other side of the freaking country. I called USPS to ask why, had to fight with their automated phone system to get to speak with an agent, and was finally told by a "trained professional agent" that she could only tell me what I myself could see when I track online. As my mind filled with illegal thoughts, she did thank me for "choosing USPS". Now my package has to come back to Mass., which will cost USPS more in plane fuel and manpower, yet they whine about revenue loss. Now to my latest gripe. Look at tracking below for a package I'm waiting for; start at the bottom on March 3. It was accepted at the post office in Cambridge, then got sent to Boston, then back to Cambridge. I don't think I have EVER in my LIFE had so much trouble with getting my mail... If trouble had a name it would be Central Square USPS. After going through - 3 Supervisors - 5 Customer service agents - 2 Mail Carriers - and three weeks of hearing nothing I have come to the conclusion that my mailman decided for me that I shouldn't get mail anymore. I love the United States Post Office. Aside from the occasionally long lines, this place is great. Some people may wonder why I heap praise on something as regular as a post office. Here are my reasons: good prices, efficient and helpful staff, and they have tons of services that are difficult or expensive somewhere else. We tried to send a small package at a FedEx place; they wanted to charge us $9.50. We rebuffed their offer and chose the post office instead: they charged us $2.04. You can also get money orders here. The only downside is the expensive copier and the lackluster cafe in the corner. I've discounted those negatives since people don't go to the post office for coffee or to make copies. read more

Classical architecture, easy to spot. Does passport photos & passports. They also have a kiosk to mail packages and buy stamps. Customer service hit or miss - when I asked the passport guys a question, they were super nice and helpful. But when I went to the desk to use a pen near an available representative while there was no line, she put up her "closed" sign even though I hadn't decided whether I needed to ask her anything. I returned to get in line shortly afterwards and noticed she was available again. Also, partially related, when I first moved in, it took us a while to get our stuff delivered so it took us a while to post our names on our mailbox. We got a mean letter telling us to do so. And yet, afterwards, we would still get mail that was clearly NOT one of the people who currently live in the apt. If you want me to post my name, could you not give me other people's mail? I actually totally agree that if the average post office deserves two stars, then this one gets three. But ONLY three. It isn't that good. What other things are as bad as going to the post offce? Dentist? Auto Repair Shop? That is all I can think of. This post office is centrally located and seems to have a lot of pretty good features - the prime one being the self-serve console right inside the doorway that can actually take care of about 80% of the things you need. However, if you need to buy 5 international stamps to send your sister postcards while she is studying abroad in Scotland or insure a package to return it from an online purchase gone awry, then you are waiting in the big line for the 2 clerks to get at you. That is when you officially jump in the time machine and no email or iPhone is going to save you from the boredom of the Post Office line. The one true positive of this experience, is that I never get tired of reading the awesome dedication plaque right by the service desk to the WWII veteran who was the branch manager for a number of years and died in 1992. This post office feels vaguely post-apocalyptic to me, as if the former occupants of this cavernous building evacuated and postal workers from another planet moved in and set up shop. Nothing in this space seems designed for the way the lobby is used now. There is a glass case with some sort of historical exhibit, that people are always leaning on to address an envelope even though a large sign directs you not to place anything on the glass, because there is hardly any counter space provided for addressing your letters and packages. The counters are too tall, the line cuts on a random diagonal, and for some reason there is barely any light at all in the lobby. But, the staff are nice and helpful (see my Harvard Square post office review for comparison), and it is very convenient that this location is open until 7pm. read more

I don't usually write reviews, but when I do, I MEAN it. I don't know what others experiences were, but mine was horrible. The lady who was serving me, I hardly understood her English. Pretty much just wanted to finish me and move onto the next customer. But I was sending some VERY important documents, she just took my International Priority Mail Envelop, and asked me to pay. Not being savvy at mailing internationally, I was rushed by her, so didn't get a tracking/insurance/etc. Now my documents are lost. I dread having to go here - I do just about all my postal stuff online at usps.com or use FedEx and UPS. This post office especially seems to be understaffed, and the customer service is abhorrent. If picking up a package, you have to go to their "registry" service desk, where the bell doesn't work, so you have to rap on the glass. Hopefully you're wearing your evil eye pendant so the menacing glare given by the attendant will not pierce your soul. I do have to give one star goes to their automated shipping machine, which generally allows me to avoid having to interact with the cranky postal workers altogether. At last! I would have given it one star if it wasn't for the one really nice blond woman who always helps me out IF she's at the counter. Service with a smile and all that good stuff. First of all either this place is understaffed or the employees are just slow and lazy. Aside from that one nice woman all the people here look like they work at the DMV, depressed as if they've hit rock bottom. Maybe it's the lighting. But oh my god every time I come here they more often than not only have one person at the counter. It doesn't matter if there's a line of 6 or 1. And on those rare occasions there's 2 you can bet that one takes a crap load of time in between customers. Good thing I'm patient though, I come to this post office expecting to wait. Yelp isn't anything if not helpful. Here's a few ideas on how to make the customer service experience better: 1. During the winter - We all get sick every now and then. One time a particular postal worker decided to help out and take a few customers. It took him probably 15 minutes to setup and open but he was sneezing and coughing all over the place. I almost wanted to let the person behind me go on ahead as the clerk was sneezing in his hands, which is just gross. But I had already waited 30 minutes, I really didn't feel like spending the hour on line. I get my dose of germs riding the T I don't need extra. The whole reason why I wanted to pay using my credit card was because you sneezed in your hands. I was REALLY trying to avoid the whole contact thing which was defeated when you asked to see my credit card. Next time please have some hand sanitizer with you. 2. Be aware of how much money you owe me. - I went to the post office last week to mail a letter international and for some stamps. The guy at the desk said it would be $4.25 and I hand him a $5.00. He was in quite a hurry that he completely forgot to give me my change. It must have been awkward for him to close the register, tell me have a nice day and I had to ask for my change. I don't see a tip jar anywhere so please take the extra 6 seconds and make sure you give the customer everything before rushing onto the next one. 3. Service with a smile. - Okay, you don't have to smile. We get it, you work at the post office but you'd rather be anywhere else. Things might be a lot easier for the both of us if you didn't look like I was taking you away from your soap operas. To the one cheery upbeat woman, good for you. You might not like working here but I wouldn't be able to tell with how pleasant and helpful you always are when serving the customer. If they had employee of the month I'd nominate you in a heartbeat. read more

Post offices and other governmental agencies tend to intimidate me. I spend a lot of time standing and looking at all the not-so helpful signs. Today I went into the post office, stared confusedly for a while, and them left to get some lunch. However, when I came back to finish my business, one lady was just so helpful and friendly that I had to give this post office a review. I think it may have been Diane (who Erica D. mentioned). This post office is a big old building. My experiences up until today had been mixed, sometimes having to stand in line for a long time to get to the counter. Usually I use the automated postal center machine to send packages, which is convenient. Today I had a special issue. Having sealed a priority mail envelope and bought postage, I deposited it in the drop box. Later I realized I had failed to inclue some necessary documents. I thought I might have to pay for another priority mail envelope but when I asked if they could open the machine a manager came right out and got my package back. I opened it, added the necessary documents and had it taped again. Problem solved, no extra cost... Nice job, I appreciate the exra effort! read more

I guess this is both a complaint about USPS in general as well as this specific location. This is the second time that USPS has listed my package as "delivered" on the tracking page when it hasn't been delivered. Both times, I've had to call the post office and listen to 25+ minutes of ringing before an employee (who honestly comes across like s/he hate USPS more than I do) finally answers the phone only to tell me that s/he doesn't know where the package is, where the package could be, or what to do if I never receive the package. Isn't there a manual they can reference? Shouldn't this be covered at orientation? In a pamphlet? At the very least, muster up the energy to give me the USPS customer service phone number. I waited in line once to send a package/buy some stamps and it took a while (~30+). Shame on me for not just doing that online. Two stars because I ended up receiving my packages after the phone calls. read more

You know how grandfathers on television say "they just don't make ___ like they used to"? It's hard not to be in awe of this grand structure while sitting across the street on the lawn outside City Hall, drinking coffee. Inside, it's your average urban post office scenario: 3-4 workers helping a line of 2-15 depending on the time of day. They seem to be especially nice at this post office, i'm not sure why. There's an automated system for shipping boxes and a window for processing passport photos. Picking up packages here has always been pretty painless and quick. Post offices may have previously served a slightly more useful function to society than they do today, but in between the giant Netflix warehouse and your mailbox, it's cool that your stuff sits in such a beautiful building. read more

I am lucky if I ever get my packages. Today, after a package was supposed to be delivered, the tracking said it was an "insecure location" and my package could not be delivered. I have now been trying to get ahold of USPS all day. I finally got a callback, and was put on hold for another 30 minutes before I hung up. I needed this package for today and unfortunately thanks to USPS I will need to return it (if I ever get it). I like this post office. Apparently USPS has a rule that there should never be enough people working at the window, though. The line is usually long, esp at lunch, when you'd think they'd break out an extra clerk. Recently I had a GREAT experience there. It was a few days before Xmas, and the line was long. They ha extra people working the floor who are very funny and very helpful. They pulled me out of line to use the self service system which worked great and there was a lot of laughter and good cheer. Unreal! read more

I know, I know... why do we even try to go back here for passport renewals when we know its going to suck the life out of us and end without a passport renewal? This time we went here for passport renewal on a Saturday in early April. The passport line was 20 to 30 people deep with 60 minutes until closing. 1 person manning the window. We waited for 10 minutes and the line did not move. But then fate intervened. The person in front of us had a loud cell phone conversation about how the Harvard Square post office didn't have a line and did do passports. Before that conversation ended, we booked it out of Central, got to Harvard with 30 min to go, made it to the guy who filed our application, no problem. We are eternal optimists but I think we've finally learned our lesson: Central Square = frustration; Harvard Square = passport. read more

I wish I could give zero stars. When people send me packages, it takes WEEKS until they are delivered. IF they are delivered. I get a lot of "delivery attempts" but they won't attempt a second time, you then have to go to the post office and wait in a long line and deal with angry people who hate their jobs if you want your package. The best part is that these "attempts" often happen when I'm home all day. I think they just don't want to carry the package, so they leave a note instead. Maybe try the doorbell? If I'm expecting a package, I leave a note asking for delivery to the side door (out of view of the street). Sometimes, they will do this. Sometimes, they just leave my package on the front step, an arm's length from the sidewalk, in my busy urban neighborhood. What a great idea! And then there is the "carrier pickup service" where you can go online and request them come to your house to pick up a package that you want to mail. Except they don't come. But sometimes, they send you a confirmation email saying that they picked up the package. Even though it's still on your porch. How very kind of them. This office is the worst one I've ever encountered-- and I've lived in 9 zipcodes in 14 years, I've dealt with plenty of them. Use UPS. read more

I go to this post office a lot and the employees are always nice and helpful. I just received 2 fake " tried to deliver but no one was there so we left a notice" status when I tracked a package that I was expecting. Someone was home at both times the delivery attempts were reported. When I went to the post office to inquire they said it was impossible because the first delivery attempt was made after they were closed on a Saturday evening and to come back around 7pm to check. In the meantime I got another text that a second attempt was made and no one was home again and they left a notice. Again, someone was home and there was no notice. I went back before 7pm and stood in line for 30 min and another person at the counter told me that Saturday no attempt was made because they did not finish the route, the package was not in the back room and the carrier was not back yet so he did not know anything. It is okay with me if they deliver a day or two or three late but I have a problem with the carrier reporting all these attempts when he/ she did not and put fake info in the tracking system. I want to support the post office but after this I will not use them for any important mail or package when there is no accountability. read more

No one picks up the phone at this office. I do not understand why, after someone finally picked up after 40 minutes of ringing, I was put on hold for 55 minutes to ask for information about packages whose delivery date had been rescheduled. That was the worst it got, I guess, and I've been spared the long waits twice...ending up waiting for only a little more than 30 minutes each time. (Yay?) The person on the end of the line had promised to call me back several times, but of course, no one ever calls back. I guess I shouldn't expect much from someone who takes more than half an hour to pick up the phone, and then puts you on hold for 30+ minutes. I had mailed about $3000's worth of books by media mail, and for the record, it took nearly A MONTH for me to figure out WHERE they were in Cambridge, because apparently, none of the post offices in Cambridge communicate with each other. It turns out they had sent my books to another post office, which was "unable to re-deliver" my six 50-lb boxes unless I go back to this central Cambridge office to coordinate the redelivery. This post office then claimed that it would only take another week to get my boxes to me, to which I said bullsh*t and lugged each box home from the post office myself as soon as I figured out where they were. read more

These creeps stole a package with an iPhone inside and filled out a phony slip saying they delivered it at 11:30 PM. They never answer the phone, they give you the runaround and are generally useless. Someone out of this office is a thief. read more

They made me cry twice. Both times I was complaining because my carrier refused to deliver a package. The letter carrier left the notice that they tried to deliver it once and I was left with the option to sign the slip and have it delivered the next day. Both times, the next day, the slip was left untouched, and when I called to inquire about it, the person on the phone yelled at me for my "unreasonable" request to have my mail actually delivered to my house rather than pick it up. The rude staff yelled at me saying that it was probably too big to leave and they were concerned about getting stolen. Both times, the packages were very small. Also, building went through over a month of bad service where our letter carrier either left everyone's mail unsorted on the floor or delivered us many pieces of our neighbor's (next door, not in the same building) mail. It had gotten to the point that once a week, I would do my own mail delivery to my neighbor's house because many of the pieces of mail looked important (tax related stuff etc..) When I called to complain about this, the letter carrier had given the supervisor 3 provably false excuses as to why our service was shoddy. Excuse 1- he was on vacation for a week- must have been his sub (had been happening for over a month) Excuse 2- The neighbors changed the lock in their foyer so he couldn't get in (then how did I get in to deliver the mail?) Excuse 3- people were on vacation and their boxes were overfilled so that is why he put the mail on the floor (no, my entire building of 5 units did not take a month and a half long vaca) As far as I know, nothing has been done about this shoddy service. Keep posting your stories and maybe someone will tighten up their shoddy service. read more

I want my books back. I am trying to forget the horror of receiving an empty box. The box was ripped open from side to side. None of the books in that box made it. Someone said my books were stolen. If they ripped it open to check whether those were books or some other business material, I'd appreciate them taping it back. In fact, one of the 4 boxes was opened then taped back. I lost a few books and one book came apart while another was ripped into half. Still... I had the pieces. Unlike the books in the empty box. All have been lost in transit. I was told by USPS to fill out a form. Then we shall see. No one else got back to me. Never send anything through USPS media mail. read more
