I do not know why I torture myself. There is always a line that moves at a snail's pace. This must be the only post office where people come for passports and that slows EVERYTHING else down. I want to say my experience here was fantastic! I had to apply for a passport and this was my second try! First appointment was a disaster at usps Charlestown- camera broken? No time to take photo elsewhere? no alternatives except, make new apt? Sorry was said, but def not felt!Well, I guess 2nd times a charm!!! Customer care is not exactly the hallmark of the US post offices, but this location takes it to a new low. This tends to be a very busy location, with complex transactions, and yet they rarely have more than one of the three desks staffed. When I was there recently , those of us in line with a very complicated transaction happening at the desk asked the clerk if anyone else was available to help us. The clerk did not even acknowledge that we were speaking. This would be rude in any circumstance, but in a public facing, arguably customer service role, it's genuinely horrifying. Go to any other postal office that you can get to instead of this one. read more

Tom is the worst!!! He's usually mid level rude, but today he was so rude i had to write in. Tossing my packages around and huffing and puffing on how the scanner can't read because i taped over it. Well, the type it in, then! He finally did type it in (Do your job), and don't make me feel bad about recycling a bag. Then , basically tossing my change at me. I mean, this guy usually has a chip of some sort on his shoulder, but today it was epic rudeness. From now on, I'll be walking down to Porter Sq for my postal needs. The USPS is going out of business. Which sucks, because what other entity will move your handwritten card from Coast A to Coast B for less than a slice of cheese on your already-too-loaded sandwich? An epic ode to Fordian scale. What sucks even more is the possibility I may never again be able to visit the guys at the West Somerville Post Office. In a time when I can print my own stamps and have parcel materials sent free to my doorstep, I still look forward to being greeted by one of the most courteous and genuinely helpful casts of Post Office characters around. I had two packages to mail. I put them in flat rate priority mail boxes thinking that must be the best deal. When I went to the counter, the man working told me that it was actually A LOT cheaper to mail them in regular plain old priority mail boxes because they didn't weigh much. He saved me about 11 dollars. I wonder how many times I've wasted money at other post offices thinking that the flat rate packaging was always the way to go. Thanks postal worker! read more

Service is very friendly here, and efficient. I have to give them credit for that. But, why do you never, ever pick up your phone? I swear, maybe it's not even the right number...except that it's listed the same in like 50 places, and when you call the national USPS service and ask about local information they give me the phone number the same way I have it. I've called 5 or 6 times in the last couple days, and waited maybe 20-30 rings each time. This most recent time I waited for more than 5 minutes of ringing with no pickup, and no answering machine to leave a message or anything, before I eventually got redirected to a message that said "The Verizon Wireless customer you have called is not available..." Wait, what? The post office wouldn't be a cell phone number. 617-666-2255, listed the same here on Yelp as on Google, and at the national Post Office line, and others, so if it's the wrong number, they're remarkably consistent about putting it wrong everywhere. Randomly closed at 3pm in the afternoon on a Monday... when another customer and I were wondering why the doors were locked, an employee came to the door where a handwritten (Closed at 5pm) sign was hanging. We asked him what the issue was, and he said that they are closed now. Visiting this post office is a thoroughly pleasant experience. And how often can you say that? This location tends to be less busy than the other ones I visit regularly (Harvard and Central), which means the clerks have time to answer your questions. I've never had anyone get snippy with me when I inquired into different shipping options. I've also never had to wait in a long line. And best of all, they have PARKING! There is a lot in the back of the building. A big plus if you are mailing something large. (I want to insert an off-color joke here but I can't quite figure out how to make it work.) The post office is right in the center of Davis Square, but tucked away on a side street, and shares an entrance with another business, so you'd almost never know it was there. Here's a hint: look for the big blue mailbox out front! (Maybe I shouldn't have just said that. Now the lines will get longer.) This location does have the odd feeling of being the wrong business in the wrong space. If the line does get longer than 4 people, there is really no place for them to stand. Meanwhile, the mailing supplies only fill about 1/4 of the available shelf/wall space. I know we don't all go to the post office for thrilling displays of merchandise, but it's just odd to me that post offices so often seem to be mismatched with the spaces they occupy. I don't think I've noticed this at any other type of business. Lastly, I wish this location was open for longer hours, but whaddaya gonna do? read more

I use this location frequently since it's the closest to my home, but I wish I had an alternative. Sure, the longer wait times are partially due to social distancing, but the employees are very slow and inefficient. They have long chats and disagreements with each other (always involving the middle aged male employee), while we are expected to patiently watch and wait. When i choose not to wait in a line (often 10-15 people depending on the time), and place my prepaid Priority package in the drop-off bin, it NEVER gets scanned & sent the same day. Oh, my what is going on here? Rarely stop in here, but when I do it's an adventure. My most recent trip included a line of three people, which agitated one of the postal employees. She shouted for the other person several times, said there was a line; told her to hang up on the customer on the phone, and that she had to go to the bathroom. (Which by the way she never left to go to the potty after the other person returned). This same person got into an argument with a customer about paying for a package. He refused, and she finally decided to weigh it again. Guess who was right. Yep, the customer. This lovely woman was gossiping about other postal employees and telling her co-worker; I just cut them off (callers), and don't answer the phone (because she doesn't). Getting a little worried about my mail getting to it's destination and I think I'll just not post-office in Davis Square no matter what. Nope, not even stamps. read more

One of the best post offices I've ever visited. The lines move quickly and everyone is always extremely friendly. Well-lit, clean, warm in the winter, and air-conditioned in the summer. We sent our wedding invitations from this post office, and they actually made the experience fun! The postal worker chatted us up and took us aside for special attention (she asked one of her colleagues to take over for her - they're so well staffed!). I am one of those people who, after years of terrible treatment at the hands of postal employees, dreads doing to the post office. For sure, there are some horrible post offices in this area (exemplified by the College Avenue "Tufts" post office up in Medford). But the Davis Square post office is an absolute delight! The idea of reviewing a post office on yelp used to seem silly to me until I went to this post office. I received excellent service and the postal workers here deserve some credit. I brought in a book that I wanted to ship via priority mail. I didn't wrap it or package it, but I brought duct tape, scissors, and scrap paper for cushioning -- planning to package it on the spot. The second I walked in, the guy at the counter asked me if I needed help. I refused initially, not wanting to burden him. Then he asked again after I had been looking at the flat rate envelopes, trying to figure out which one's the right size for my book -- this time I succumbed. It was a good decision. He looked up my shipping options and told me the cheapest way to ship it. He even packaged the book for me and was patient with me while I rummaged for money to give him and the destination address to put on the label. I was really amazed by how helpful and friendly this postal worker was. Too bad this isn't my most convenient post office by far, because I really wish I could get all my mailing stuff done here without any hassles. read more

Another complaint about Tom. He is the rudest clerk I have ever encountered. He grabs mail out of my hands. He snatches my credit card from me. He is so rude that after this yelp review, I will be contacting the post office directly. He drags down the rest of the team by a super significant margin, because anybody who goes to this location regularly knows that Pat is great and the ladies are hilarious. However, Tom is really the worst. I'll be avoiding Tom's window, and anybody who doesn't want to be aggressively scowled at might want to avoid Tom too. read more

Doing a great job with signage to have people properly keep their distance by using different entrance and exit doors, but not doing a great job enforcing it. Walked into the entry door and was met by a woman who didn't follow the signs. Went inside to mail a package and there was a man who had no mask and was talking with the front counter. This is my favorite post office. The staff is incredibly nice, courteous, and patient. If you want to brighten your day, listen to the older gentleman rattle off all the different themes of stamps: "We got Disney Princesses, American Fir Trees of the 1960s, Jazz Icons, locomotives, famous American illustrators, WWII veteran tributes, fight breast cancer" you get the idea. It's a post office and there are still some frustrating things to deal with. Lines can be long and somewhat slow but it's not really a fault of the employees. There isn't too many frills at this location. That said - the service here is refreshingly superior to almost every other post office I've been to in the Somerville/Cambridge area. I'm a recent transplant from Ohio. Was shocked to find a post office ala 1950's Mayberry. In the land of MIT not a single self serve kiosk? No after hours stamps, package station- NOTHING! In the past, I have generally dreaded going to the post office. With the long lines and the rude, curt service, it makes an already blah errand even more torturous, especially on a Saturday morning when I could be in my warm bed, drooling on my pillow. The Davis Square Post Office is a completely serviceable office in an incredibly convenient location. And one of their employees, Tom, is knowledgeable, courteous, and kind. I have had poor personal experiences with employees other than him, however. Questions are answered grudgingly, and when trying to clarify a question of mine, I've been put on hold without warning and then hung up upon. Convenient and generally adequately run, but the customer service is a crapshoot. Hope that you get Tom. read more

This office is friendly and somewhat helpful, but when they couldn't help me with a mail delivery problem and directed me to the Somerville switchboard office the "supervisor" there (he refused to give me his name) actually screamed at me for politely asking ONE question, called me "facetious" and then hung up. I've never had a pleasant experience in this post office. I don't find the staff particularly friendly or helpful as portrayed in other postings. I've been there 3 times and consider my experiences there to be either flat or substandard. During my most recent visit, there were 2 staff each taking care of a customer. I was next in line. One postal worker actually had the customer repackage her package in a new box while I waited - instead of having her step aside to do this. The customer looked back at me and apologized. The other postal worker was chatting away with his customer. Just so you know - I am a very friendly person so I'm not opposed to workers chatting with customers, but there has to be a balance of friendliness and efficiency. I left there completely understanding why the post office is going out of business. read more
