Came here twice in a matter of two months and on both occasions I had the most friendly, professional service. Today's package was going international. Not only was my package not sealed or addressed, it was in the wrong packaging altogether. This was not an issue in the least for the clerk helping me. He gave me a price comparison on shipping options then allowed me to complete the customs document and return once finished. On each visit the clerks sparked small-talk. This never happened at the post office in the Mission (S.F.). In fact I had to remind (check her) the clerk at my local office that she was there as a public service. She was rude and unfriendly. I am so glad to be at a new facility where the staff is pleasant and approachable. Not to mention the building is beyond beautiful! During my 2 minute wait in line, I had a glimpse of historical plaques and architectural details from the 1920's. Ample parking on the side of the building plus plenty of street parking. read more

NEVER go to Post office at -120 4Th St - Petaluma, CA 94952. My son dropped a package off inside and it disappeared including tracking number - all missing - when we returned to report it, they took our cell phone and promised a call back and nothing....My daughter now has two lost packages from the same exact post office. We will never go back, but wanted to let others know. The more people we tell, we hear the same story, missing package, no tracking.....package never even made it to being picked up? Shipping out an ez pass and used some of their supplies. Sign posted asks people to pay for products but one of the mail clerks persons didn't stamp it. So my recommendation would be to verify they stamp what you buy or keep the receipt. The location has lots of parking and wasn't too busy on a Tuesday around 10. read more

Best. Service. EVER. Needed to send a letter and a book. Starting from when I parked my car, it took me under 30 seconds to drop off my letter, get it stamped, pay for my package, and get it shipped off. WOW. Talk about fast service! In all honesty I hate coming to this post office. I have an eBay business and I have had over 20+ packages that have either been "lost" or damaged. When i go to the post office I want to make it a quick visit, but the older ladies behind the counter want to chat with EVERYONE. The lines are always long and slow moving.....I wonder why? Maybe if they would stop with the conversations they could get the customers in and out in a timely manner. I'd rather drive to Santa Rosa and deal with that post office. read more

I've had problems here 2x. The McDowell Post Office was much more thorough and efficient. And if they don't know something, they will say it. This post office has an older gentleman who told me that I couldn't get a receipt for doing "return to sender," even though the USPS phone operator said that I could. The woman next to him butted in and agreed, and she was rather cold. Then, this younger man overheard, and comes over and takes care of everything. That was August 25, 2011. He was a breath of fresh air, and gave me exactly what I had asked for. In December 1, 2012, a package was scanned and then handed back to me due to insufficient postage; I had purchased the label online. Later that afternoon, whilst at home, that label was destroyed and a refund was requested online. And now, that same label # is showing up as scanned twice in their system, even though it was never physically there for the evening scan; it got handed back to me! And no refund is being granted, because the postal worker scanned the label. I do not understand why she didn't perform some reverse scan, so that I wouldn't be charged for something that she handed back to me; I didn't know the procedure and trusted that she knew what she was doing. And if the post office looks at the details on that label, it never got sent anywhere, and definitely didn't make it to its destination. It didn't even get there in the time frame of the priority mail service. I wonder if FedEx or UPS is any better, even though they have higher fees. read more

Lazy employees. What takes every other post offices no time at all takes these lazy stupid people 2 days. They also put packages on the wrong truck way too often. When my package arrives in Petaluma it will 7 out of 10 times be delivered the next day. But aY too often my package get put on a truck going the opposite direction (south instead of north). I went to the post office with thirty of the same packages. Same size, same weight all being sent within the same city. They insisted on processing each one individually. The staff was friendly but super slow and spent the 45 minutes it took to process everything arguing and chatting amongst themselves. It just seems like this is a very slow and inefficient way to do things and creates unnecessary work and backup. Overall it was a super frustrating experiences. read more

I love this historic post office. It's a busy one like most other post offices, but several times when the line is long, I've been helped by and seen others helped by the manager. The staff here is great, and I always make a point to thank them since they have a very thankless job. I wish the USPS would spend some money making the interior of this beautiful building a little nicer, but as far as it goes, this is a great post office. read more

Just an absolute miserable c working the counter there. I had a prepaid package to send off (4x6), but it wasn't taped. Despite the variety of tapes next to her at her disposal (clear tape, not priority, even though my package was overnight), this b wouldn't let me use her tape. Told me to go home and tape it and hand it to the carrier. I am sure the carriers love picking up packages to haul along with the rest of their loot. Anyways, she enjoyed her power trip. This is the BEST US Post office ever !!! All the clerks are smiling and very proficient in their jobs. The building is unique and they are open on Saturdays. Parking is easy to find, too. Just got kicked out of thePost Office at 5:05 PM by a rude clerk who informed me and the woman in front of me that the place had closed five minutes earlier and we weren't going to be served. She did this in a hostile manner. Normally, she's busy gossiping to customers and wasting our time. The thing is both of us had been in line for more than 5 minutes. Can't the post office figure out a way to handle its nightly closing? Maybe put a rope up behind the last customer with a sign that says SORRY, CLOSED. But what can you expect from one of the worst run post offices on the West Coast? They routinely open late. The staff is slow, rude, or worse. And the facility is falling apart (the ran pours out of the broken gutter right over the front door drenching customers--it has for years). Little wonder that private mail services have taken over the services that used to be served here. I won't support keeping this place open in the next wave of budget cuts. read more

Generally speaking I find the employees at both post office sites in Petaluma friendly, helpful and efficient. Recently though (7/2/14) I did receive some "snippy" service from a female worker at the post office on 4th St. I had gone into the post office the day before to have my parcel weighed since there are different label requirements for sending international mail depending on weight. My parcel was weighed and I was told what label to use. I returned the next morning believing everything was ready to go. As soon as I handed over the parcel the lady snottingly announced that I had not put the date next to my signature on the label. I apologized and added it immediately. She seemed surly and I remember thinking hey its only a date and I fixed it in 2 seconds. Anyway, I asked if she could add a fragile label (guy I dealth with the day before said he would do that for me when I returned) she immediately announced "we don't do that". When I explained that I had been told they did she slapped a stamp on the counter that had the word "fragile" on it and told me I could do it myself!! By the end of our transaction she started to warm up when she realized I was not impressed with her bad attitude. I still love this post office and think for the most part the staff are courteous and helpful but this lady was either just having a bad day or is in need of a change in scenery. Most people don't enjoy hanging out at the post office and are just trying to get in and out so we can get on with our busy day. We are not in there trying to mess with you, and would you believe we are not the experts on sending parcels you are, so have patience with us if we need a little direction here and there. read more

If I could give less stars I would. My fiancé and I went to this location to mail out our wedding invitations, and we received the worst customer service ever. A little about me: I am retail manager and have been a GM for over 8 years. The way this teller screamed at us about our envelopes was over the line. We then got back in line to just buy more expensive stamps, she shows us the one option they have available and tells they are nice and it doesn't matter what they look like. We agree and ask to purchase. She then tells us, they are sold out, and throws her hands in the air and just asks for the next customer. We left empty handed, with no stamps to mail out our invites, vs being able to buy 2 forever stamps for every invite. We now have to look for another avenue to purchase our stamps. Isn't that what the post office is for, to buy stamps? Biggest joke- is that they have a huge sign inside this location that says, "customer service is our #1 priority". I ordered something online last week and Friday my package was verified as delivered, which was very unusual, because it was not here. I figured I would give it the weekend, and on Monday I called the Post Office to figure out what happened. The woman who answered the phone had a heavy accent , making it hard to communicate, and was extremely rude. When I told her the situation, she responded with "Well, what do you want me to do?" Can I post no stars? Downtown Fourth Street Post Office is the absolute worst post office ever for a city of 50k+. What is the USPS thinking?? ALWAYS long lines with clerks who more or less try to care- somewhat. Why on earth is there only ONE self-service machine and drop bin? My little hometown of 15k people in PA has two of each in its lobby! This downtown post office is a real drag. North McDowell is much better- but again only one bin! Don't these BOZOS realize these bins fill up every weekend and cannot be used? Or, do they just not care? PLEASE...USPS... Petaluma deserves better than the 4th Street House of Horrors. read more
