Been here a few times and have never had any issues using their services. The staff have always been helpful and respectful, even though sometimes they seem like they don't want to people. I totally understand because I don't like peopling a lot. They have always provided me with solidly reliable mailing services. The architecture looks like it's the original building for whatever it used to be. Parking can be difficult because they are downtown with limited street parking. They do have the 30-minute limited parking in the front, which I've lucked out on being available a couple times. read more

So lets face it, going to the post office is up there with say a root canal. However, this particular post office at least has some interesting architecture to make up for any wait. The downtown Palo Alto post office was built during the Great Depression. The postal service in that time frame would seek out local architects. In this case Palo Alto native Birge Clark was used who also designed many of the well loved and prominent (still to this day) building in the city. The white stucco building is in the Mediterainian Style with a Spanish style curved shingle roof. The interior is also quite nice with soaring ceilings and the old school P.O. boxes lining the walls. Beyond that it is a fully functional post office and like with most, sometimes its a breeze other times a nightmare depending on how many clerks are manning the front and how poorly prepared the people in line in front of you are. read more

This USPS is the worst staff and worst Post Office I have ever been to in my entire life. The staffs were so arrogant and have attitude problem. The kiosks are not working. Then they have one staff handling a big large line. Come in this digital world you guys run this way in heart of Palo Aalto? Horrible experience. The highlight of this post office is certainly the beautiful architecture as you walk in. There was definitely a remodel but the style is still reminiscent of of mid 20th century work. As for USPS itself, the employees treated me with courtesy and were very efficient. You'll find a selection of gift cards, greeting cards, and shipping items. Bring your own tape! read more

Back from the E Bayshore post office where I was told that they in fact should have handled the refund at Hamilton. Apparently Hamilton continuous to send issues like mine to them eventhough internally they have already addressed this issue and that it shouldn't happen. The sweet girl at Bayshore graciously gave me my refund and told me to file a complain with their USPS office internally. Subject: Concern Regarding New PO Box Access Hours & Lack of Proper Notice Dear [Post Office Manager/USPS Customer Service], I originally sought out a PO Box at the Palo Alto Post Office on 380 Hamilton Ave. specifically because it allowed 24-hour access. This was a key factor in my decision, as it provided the flexibility I needed for retrieving my mail. Over the years, I understand that circumstances changed, particularly with an increase in homeless individuals seeking shelter inside the post office at night. I assume that some customers accessing their PO Boxes late at night may have felt uncomfortable or unsafe. This is understandable, and I recognize why the decision was made to begin locking the doors overnight to prevent overnight stays. Even with this change, it was still convenient for me to keep my PO Box because the post office continued opening around 7 AM and locking the doors at 6 PM. These hours allowed me to access my mail before or after work, as I typically finish my job in San Francisco late in the day but could still make it before the 6 PM lockout. However, with the arrival of a new person in charge at this post office, the access hours have been further restricted. The doors are now not opening until 8:30 AM and locking at 5 PM. This is completely impractical for working individuals who rely on their PO Boxes. Most people work during those hours--how are they supposed to come to the post office without missing work? The entire point of having a PO Box is accessibility, yet this change makes it nearly impossible for working professionals to retrieve their mail conveniently. Adding to the frustration, there is no notice posted on the doors informing customers of this change in hours. This is completely unprofessional. Customers should not have to guess or find out through trial and error that the hours have changed. Furthermore, the sign on the door still states that the post office doors should be open at 8 AM, but this staff member is choosing to open them at 8:30 AM--or whenever she feels like it. If the doors are supposed to open at 8 AM, why are customers being made to wait outside until 8:30 AM? This kind of inconsistency only creates more confusion and inconvenience. Additionally, I have noticed that one of the two entrance doors is locked prematurely, likely to make it easier to secure the building quickly at closing time. These restrictions only add to the frustration for long-term customers like myself. During my conversation with the staff member who opened the doors today, I simply inquired about the new hours. She responded in a noticeably irritated manner, stating that she had previously attempted to close the roll-up doors to the public/parcel receiving area earlier than usual, but a customer objected and even threatened to sue her. Based on her response, it seems like this change may have been influenced either by frustration with that incident or by a general unwillingness to accommodate customer needs. Regardless, the way she communicated this information came across as unprofessional and lacking in basic customer service skills. Frankly, this change is ridiculous and entirely impractical for those of us who rely on this service. COVID-19 REVIEW Came here to mail 40 pieces of nonmachinable mail. The clerk was very kind, nonmachineable charge is 70cents. I had already put on a 55cent forever stamp on my mail. I asked for 40x 10 cent stamps and 40x 5 cent stamps. He quickly found the stamps and then I told him why I needed it and he said "oh we have 15cent stamps!" and proceeded to search for them and asked other clerks to help him find it. SO THOUGHTFUL! He gave me the hand stamper to hand stamp my mail, he instructed me how to use it, and gave me a box and let me stamp away! It was so easy! The clerks were so sweet, there was a family there and the parent was filling out forms and the baby in the stroller kept saying "Bah Bye!" to everyone and both the clerks and the customers played along with the baby and entertaining her. IT WAS SO ADORABLE. I waited in line again with my hand stamped mail and a clerk who was helping someone else quickly told me to just leave my box of mail on the counter and she will get to it! Had to visit the post office twice today. I find that this location is busier than others in the area. There's often a line when I come in because this place gets a lot of traffic and unfortunately a lot of people hold up the line for lack of preparedness. I think the staff does a good job of keeping the line going and every time I have visited this location they have two or more people behind the counter. I got some cute stamps! But dang they get expensive quickly ($.49 each). Good thing I don't buy them often! read more

Outside of Europe, this is my favorite post office for standing in line. Birge Clark's nationally registered building is beautiful and perfect for life with Covid-19: breezy, with lots of space for distancing. The location is excellent, also. I can do banking, visit a nearby drugstore and (in a post pandemic future) get an excellent overpriced espresso without having to re-visit my car. There was a ten person line (with everyone being socially responsible), but it moved so fast I wasn't able to finish the article I started when I got into line. Service was pleasant, as always - not that I do any stress testing: I complete packaging, addressing and form filling before I get to the counter. I haven't used post office machines for a number of years and will probably continue to avoid them, since they (not just in PA) have been more like slot machines. Not a statistically valid sample, but enough to convince me that I, at least, have bad luck with them. read more

An associate by the name of Pancholi received me at the counter after a 30 min wait in line. I had 3 very heavy boxes of books to mail. She informed me that since it was media mail should could not provide a label. She told me to take the packages over to a table where I could label the boxes directly and the return. I explained that my husband had carried them in for me and that I couldn't carry them away. I set about quickly addressing them. She said I was not being cooperative and proceeded to rip up my priority packaging label and then asked for the next guest to approach the counter. Very very angry. I made it to the Hamilton Post Office w about 10 minutes left. I was in a hurry and was late in mailing valentine pkg of nighties to Mom in assisted living. But because it was stuffed w clothing there was a little bulge. The clerk looked at it doubtfully and then at P______ and she said - no. It would not be acceptable. It would cost $36.+ to mail by weight ( that was acceptable) but that was the only alternative. ( $15 more) So then I tried to mail the other pkg but they wanted me to count the stamps. I had wrapped days earlier and forgotten how much was on it. I also had forgotten my phone so I went out to the car. I was so mad on the way out I stepped on the first pkg in order to flatten it more. It did a pretty good job. I went out to car to get purse/phone but had forgotten phone at home. I only needed it to multiply the 38 stamps. But as I got back my childish anger got the better of me and when I got to P____'s counter I dropped it on the ground in front of her and jumped up and down in it. ( all 200 lb of me) The problem was then that it split just a little bit on the side. A piece of tape would have been adequate. But no. Now I damaged it and there was no way she would accept it. And there was no time or any way to proceed. I was further informed they were now closed. I have mailed 100 similar pkgs prior and count this as the worst customer service EVER. To rewrap pkg would basically destroy $21. Worth of good stamps. When asked what to do about that there was no real answer. NO mercy. No caring. No practicality. And no they could not count the stamps. I had to tell them how much. (.55's) Mind you I have used my "inheritance" up in the past - 2, 3, 4 centers and although I was meticulous about wallpapering the pkg, I have had them stop and count every single stamp. Really. ? Really. Next day. I covered crack in box w tape. Nothing more. Went to Bayshore PO. Mailed pkg. lady very nice. Friendly. She did look at the pkg sideways. No prob. Pkg mailed. Nothing else. I realize that rating the USPS doesn't make that much sense, and that this is just an angry rant, but please indulge me. I pay my apartment's rent to a post office box here. It was due today, so I wanted to drop the check in the P.O. Box directly so it wouldn't be late. I go to the counter and ask if they can do this for me, expecting that I'd have to pay for a stamp. I did this once a few weeks ago, and the person joked that I was getting express service at a standard rate. So, I wait in line for a few minutes, and then talk to the person at the counter. When I say that I need to get this letter in the PO Box today, she says that I have to pay express post rates for that, which costs $16.25, which works out to $1.63 per foot of transit. I ask to see the manager, and she re-iterates this point, that they can't take the letter, walk 5 steps, and drop it off for me without charging $16.25. They then send me to the back of the line, fill out the appropriate forms, wait another 5-10 minutes for the one counter to open up again, and pay $16.25 to do something that cost $0.41 a couple of months ago. This is why I hate monopolies. I've complained to the USPS and if I don't hear back am going to send a letter to the Postmaster General using FedEx, of course. Now that you've indulged my rant about one USPS policy that is truly idiotic, I'll note that this location is understaffed and the people working here are all unpleasant and stern, excluding the one person who was nice enough to walk 10 feet and NOT charge me $16.25. The building is nice enough, but the people at the Stanford Post Office are much nicer. read more

There are many components of the US government that need major fixing. The US Post Office isn't one of them. It's not perfect (I gave it 4 stars after all), but it mostly works. They ship and deliver the mail quickly and reliably around the world. There are stories of mail getting lost, but I can't remember it ever happening to me. I like the hours at this particular branch. It's pretty much open 24/7 for picking up mail from my P.O. Box, and I don't have to leave in the middle of work to mail a package, because they are open until the middle of the afternoon on Saturday. read more

Its not their fault that the lines are long and many people arriving at the counter are ill prepared to actually ship. I find that the people behind the counter are knowledgeable and helpful. They suggest cheaper ways to ship all the time, like fixed price boxes which are a bargain if you have something heavy. My local postman (letter carrier) is Tony and he is the BEST. Smart, friendly, conscientious and hard working. Check out SHYP if you live in an area they serve. They will pick up, pack and ship your item for absurdly cheap prices. I think they get a big discount from UPS and USPS. If you have a lot of items there is no pick up fee (otherwise $5) and they PACK and ship for not a penny more than retail shipping price at USPS. read more

07/07/08 update - now this is more like it. Remember a few months ago when I rated this place and said "This is a rare example of a government agency doing their job and meeting expectations".....well that was a fluke. Today this shithole proved itself to be worthy of it's place in the toilet with the rest of our government agencies. Mailed paychecks to employees on thursday, paid extra to guarantee a saturday deliver, checked tracking and was told that it should be there by tuesday! hahahahah are you effing kidding me? "GUARANTEED DELIVERY SATURDAY BY 3PM IF YOU MAIL IT HERE BEFORE 5:45PM TODAY". That is from the receipt......sent it out at 2:04 pm. Now people get to get paid on tuesday instead of saturday......I should've known better than to go back here after one good experience. 06/17/08 Update - Just deducted a star. Went in at about 12p, long line, one person working the counter and another person walking around trying to be helpful. Her attitude could use improvement, and when customers looked like they needed help getting a box onto the counter, she ignored it and pretended to be paying attention to something else, so I offered to help. They didn't need me though....mother-daughter "tag team" got the boxes up on the counter. Basically there was a lack of organization and poor customer service which resulted in upset customers in line with crappy attitudes. read more

My experience here was, without a doubt, some of the worst customer service I have ever experienced in my life. I'm still livid. Early last week I paid online at the USPS website to open a PO box I needed urgently. I had it assigned to this particular office because of its location. When I came in they quickly assigned me a box and gave me the keys. Perfect, right? Wrong. On my way out I figured I should open the PO box to make sure my keys worked, just in case. They didn't. It wasn't just that they were old, banged up and covered in masking tape. They actually wouldn't turn in the lock. When I looked closer, I could see the number for a different PO box scribbled on the tape. So I tried it and sure enough, they were the keys to the wrong box. I got a good look at someone else's pile of mail (sorry, owner of PO Box #1573). Real secure. So, I get back in line. The line in this place CRAWLS. They have only 1-2 clerks working at any given time (even though there are 4+ stations) and the line is pretty much always 8+ people long, even in off hours. When I finally got to the front I tried to explain the problem. They are totally perplexed as to why the keys won't work. I keep trying to explain that they are the keys to the wrong box, but it was like talking to a wall. I don't know if it was the language barrier or general failure to communicate. They take the keys back and give me a different one. Guess what? That one doesn't work either. I wait in the long line again. This time, they tell me to come back on Friday "and it will work then." I come back Friday. Try the box. Still doesn't work. Wait in the long line twice more. Every key they give me doesn't work. Finally, they say come back Saturday. I come back Saturday. Two more times through the line. No dice. They say come back Monday. So, yes, I came back Monday. Trip #4 to this wretched post office, in case you lost track. And guess what? The key still doesn't work. At this point, I'm done. I tell them to close the box and give me my money back. They have me fill out a form, then they process the refund... which is half the amount I paid for the box. I show the clerk the receipt for what I paid and she shrugs and says the system will only give back half. Because I'm making a fuss, she goes back to get her supervisor. After a few minutes the clerk comes back and says I can only get half, and if I want to appeal it I can call USPS headquarters. And if that isn't ridiculous enough, when they give me the refund for half of what they owe me, it isn't a refund on my debit card. It's not even cash. It's a MONEY ORDER - because they know how much I love spending all my free time waiting in lines at places like the post office and the bank. Because I was totally exhausted by this place, I took my money order for half of what they owe me and I left. Then I went to the post office at 265 Cambridge Avenue, where it took them under 5 minutes to process my application for a PO box and give me a key that actually opens the mail box I paid for. A miracle! And they did this with a smile! Imagine that! Other points of concern: 1. The first time I went to the post office on Hamilton I asked to buy stamps, to which they replied that they were out. Out of stamps? If you can't get them at a post office, where can you get them? The second time I got lucky and they were able to scrape together enough to sell to me, but apparently I "cleaned them out." Sorry to anyone else looking to buy stamps from the post office that day... 2. This place is plagued by line jumpers. You know, the people who "just need one small thing real quick" and sidle up past everyone waiting to ask the clerk for something that inevitably takes 10 minutes. Newsflash: everyone in line is here for "one small thing" too. The clerks shouldn't be serving these people. 3. I can have some sympathy for the clerks because this place seems to be either totally understaffed, or run by people who don't understand how to allocate staff time. I've had a lot of time over the last 6 days to observe their operations from my cozy vantage point of the line of customers moving at a glacial pace, and the supervisor would periodically come through and yell at the two older ladies on duty because the line was too long or moving too slowly. Then she would retire to the back. How about jumping on a station, then? 4. Apparently this place is up for sale and on the chopping block to be closed as soon as it sells. SO WHY ARE YOU SELLING PO BOXES WITH YEAR-LONG LEASES? If I had given out my new PO box address on the 100+ RSVP cards I'm about to send out, only to have the post office shut down a month later I would have lost my mind. TL;DR - Don't come here. Don't even think about trying to rent a PO box here. Thankfully this black hole of incompetence is slated to be shut down in the near future. read more

I wouldn't write a review on a post office unless it was bad, very, VERY BAD. Came here last Thursday at 4pm, the line was about 25 people long which should have been my first sign. I waited 45 mins. to get to the front all because there were only 2 employees helping customers (however 3 others were flittering around within eyeshot NOT helping customers) and the 2 that were open were painfully slow and inefficient. As a follow up - went to the main Redwood City branch on two occasions after this and was in and out w/i 5 mins. and received extremely courteous and efficient help. read more

Among the better POs I've been to. Work usually keeps me around fairly late (usually after 6), and I usually have the need to ship a few packages here and there. I usually have to go FedEx stuff; however, when I do, I always try to support the Post Office, because they are probably one of the best government-run businesses around and they really seem like they need it - and their delivery service is satisfactory for the price they charge, at least compared to FedEx. (I was born in the technology age, so I never send letters) I have never actually taken stuff over the counter at the PO, because earlier this year I made the switch to electronic postage (you realize about 8% - 15% in discounts, more for Express Mail). The Hamilton location is great with PC postage because they usually have a truck around until 6 pm that will continue accepting packages with prepaid/PC postage, which is half an hour later than their stated close time. This is really awesome of them and they even scan your packages in at that time. The Automatic Postage Center (APC) also applies for the late acceptance time. Good job, Hamilton. The customer service here is awful. I tried to do a change of address online, but the circumstances for the change of address were such that I needed to go into the post office. I went in with my binder of paperwork to have one guy tell me that he wasn't sure and he told me to get back in line and wait for another person. He didn't even bother trying to see if I had the proper paperwork. I then waited for the next person in line only for her to tell me I didn't fill out the form and that I needed to come back with copies of everything. If the first guy had even bothered taking a minute to see if I had the paperwork, I could have saved the second wait in line. To top it off, he looked up while taking new customers and said 'oh you're still waiting?' in a tone that seemed he was annoyed that I was still there. I guess I should have read the other Yelp reviews to prepare myself! read more

Considering the volume of mail they handle and services they provide to the public because they do, one way to measure our USPS against other Postal services around the world is to live outside of the US for, oh let us say a month tops. In fact none of you gripers need to go far to test the waters. Try Canada and smell their postal roses for awhile and come back and tell us all about it. USPS in East Palo Alto gives me trouble each time I try. USPS at Stanford gives me trouble each time I try. This one does not. I am a fan. FYI - other post offices claim that since I have paid for shipping online, I am no longer entitled for in-person service. Largely clueless and slow in person. Extremely rude on the phone. I have a package being forwarded that, after a month, has ended up in purgatory at their post office. After asking my zip (where the package is being forwarded to), she angrily speaks over me telling me to call my local post office. I didn't even get a chance to tell her it was supposed to be delivered to a PA zip and that the tracking clearly shows its at their office. "No it's not here. It's not here!" I have never experience worst customer service than the office clerk at the 380 Hamilton Ave. Branch in Palo Alto CA 94301. 10 out of 10 people I have dealt withhere has been unprofessional, INCOMPETENT, lacks skills and knowledge, unhelpful and worst of all RUDE and DISRESPECTFUL. I would like to make this complaint specifically about CLARITA, the clerk at the desk. On many occasions she is RUDE and unprofessional but today I had enough! I am a business owner who uses your service every day and I ship out 20-30 packages a day. A customer made a return and it arrived and was available for pick up on Sat, September 28th. I came to the post office to pick up but no one can find it and Clarita asked me to come back Monday. I came in Monday, still nothing, Tuesday and the same answer. Today is Wednesday and my customer had filed a complaint and dispute against me. Still NO ONE at the post office can find the package. I asked Clarita for a manager and she quickly dismissed me, with the attitude to hurry to help the next person. She rolls her eyes and tell me she can't do anything for me and she doesn't have time. Excuse me? What are you hired to do? It's extremely sad to see that a business that we as the customer depend and relay on would hire people like Clarita, who can give a crap about anyone. She acts like she's miserable and hates her job when there are plenty of people out there who would love to take her position and do a wonderful job. I don't understand why USPS continue to hire such ill-mannered, disrespectful and unprofessional employees. How can we trust your service to deliver our mail especially when we have a business and bring in thousands of dollars per day for you? This post office sucks. The man who worked there made me stand in line again because the forms were out. The customer service was very bad in this post office. I will never go back to this one. read more
