Not sure why people are hating this post office. Service has always been great here, not much wait time. This is not a big post office, conveniently located on Stanford campus, near Tresidder. So this was off the beaten path a bit for us but we needed to renew a passport and they had an early appointment so we we went for it. First off parking on the Stanford campus can suck ass and this spot is no exception. The level of greed they display in charging is horrible (employees can expect to spend $1100 a year to park almost a mile from the hospital :o) but its not the post offices fault so It did not factor in the review. You have to park in and around the Student Quad which is almost always packed. We arrived and were seen promptly. But to my chagrin I was missing paperwork and we would have to come back. As luck would have it they had an appointment the next day. In between this I left some of my paperwork there and the nice lady called the number on my application to let us know. We returned the next day and it was processed promptly. Can't get much better than that. If you need anything other than basics, I recommend you go to the another Post Office. This is a stripped down bare bones of a Post Office. Why do I say that? Well, I wanted to buy 100 forever stamps...they had only 60. How can the Post Office run out of stamps?! Not gonna lie, I felt like a baller when I told my husband "I bought all the stamps in the post office!" But, that's kind of sad...that the POST OFFICE ran out of stamps...if the post office doesn't have stamps... I don't know who would. Also I wanted to hand-stamp 40 pieces of nonmachineable mail and the clerks told me I had to mail each as a parcel for $4 each! ARE YOU SERIOUS?! Hand-stamping is a standard service (for lumpy mail that can't fit in the automated sorting machine) and nonmachineable mail charge is only a 70 cent stamp instead of a forever stamp. I am not going to pay $160 to mail each as a parcel! I was so surprised. They didn't have any reasonable suggestions for me. I was very disappointed. I went to the Downtown Palo Alto post office and they served me very quickly, I bought stamps and they let me hand stamp everything myself and I was in and out in 15 minutes. Some of the worst service I've ever received. No nearby parking, only three people on hand, only one who can do passports. They set up appointments over the time their workers were at lunch, causing them to take me an hour AFTER my appointment window. Multiple people in line were late to where they needed to be, and the workers were very late getting back from their break, making everyone even later. I would find literally anywhere else to get a passport done. That said, a saving grace WAS that the employees themselves were kind. They helped and did their best to work with us and around the standards USPS gave them. read more

Unresponsible unprofessional staff and supurvisor, we reserved our appointments for passaport for my kids, we are on tight schedule for our travell, and guess what after we arrived @ 9:45 am our appointment @10 am, she told us sorry neither the employee nor the backup employee came today! seriously these employees and supervisor need to be questioned on such carless act, they don't understand how urgent it is for people to get such a service done on time, they have travell schedule, anyway it happened many times I read yelp comments will try to file official complaint in Department of State or USPS to get these people checked and replaced. Stanford is a giant campus with its own zip code, so having a post office on campus is a great convenience and a practical necessity, especially for students without cars. I never went anywhere else for post office needs, and I would have been upset if I'd had no other choice. Every Stanford student knows this post office very, very well. It's in one of the most visible parts of campus, between the bookstore and Tresidder. The building is distinctive and fairly pretty, and there are always students coming in and out. It's easy to stop by when you're biking nearby. I had P.O. Box 11139 here for four years, and I checked my mail with low to moderate frequency. I usually parked my bike next to the door closest to my P.O. box - the windowed doors and walls meant I didn't have to worry about locking up my shitty bike. I rarely dealt with post office personnel, but when I did, they were friendly. I don't have much more to say, but I thought I'd chime in with my positive feelings, as not too many people bother to yelp a post office without a strong negative experience. The Stanford post office is conveniently located and easy to deal with. I had the same P.O. box for four years, and it served me very well. read more

Service might not be the most courteous, but come on, give these guys a break. They're working hard to make your mail gets delivered on time. It might not be as high-quality as UPS or FedEx, but you don't walk into a McDonald's expecting food from Eleven Madison Park. Where else can you get a letter delivered for just $0.46? And don't forget their first-class package services (for packages under 13 oz), which can deliver your package to the other side of the country in 3 days for less than $4. UPS/FedEx would charge $8 at a minimum. Now for the negatives. At the start of each quarter, when students have ordered a lot of textbooks from Amazon, there is always a very long wait line at the pickup window. Try to arrive at 9 AM, right when it opens, since college students are generally not willing to wake up that early. Another pet peeve of mine is that they like to scan packages as "delivered" even though it hasn't actually arrived. It should instead say "held at post office for pickup." Also, the workers there are quite stoic, but I guess it's not the most exciting job in the world so I understand. read more

Located amidst the hustle and bustle of the Stanford Campus, this post office definitely gets the job done and is very convenient for many students and campus employees. A few feet away from the bus stop, the post office is accessible by either the X or Y line to Tressider Student Union. The Stanford post office has normal USPS hours (9a-5p, but only M-F), and is fully equipped with all the boxes, supplies, last minute greeting cards, packaging that you need. The only thing that is lacking here is the self-service postage and drop-off station. I have always come right at opening (9a), so the lines are usually not a problem for me. (However, sometimes -- as other reviewers mentioned -- there are also students with requests regarding their personal PO box, so it may take a while. I can only imagine the longer wait come rush hour time in between classes.) The wait overall is not too bad; while you wait you can address your cards, boxes etc to save time. The staff is also friendly and helpful, and they get you in and out of the line quickly. read more

This is such horrible place!! We arrived at the post office around 10:15AM for our 10:30AM appointment. The passport lady went out for break during the appt time. The passport lady throw the pen on the floor because we didn't when we gave her the applicantion. She refused take picture for my infant. Everyone in the line can take the picture for their passport. I don't understand why she throwing the pen at the floor and not taking the picture for my infant. She told us that we need to take picture outside. She is discriminated against Asian!!! Who is the manager at this location??? Please don't come to this location! If there's a zero star, they deserved no star or negative star!! read more

Very difficult location to access - the maps takes you around back and there is no parking. You need to park quite a ways away and then walk to find it. Everything was painfully slow and the information we were given by the staff was contradictory to the gov website re: passport processing times. It felt like we were being unnecessarily upsold and rather and a 160 passport fee she just kept tacking on - amounted to another $100 in fees...until we questioned the fees and then they dropped down. She told us processing is 10-12 weeks minimum so we feel pressured to pay for the extra $60 to expedite processing but the us gov website clearly states 8-11 which works with our travel plans (we are traveling in 12 weeks) and then added on over $40 in extra expedited shipping fees which we didn't need. Finally, we'd booked passport photos for our little one and it was inefficient and poorly executed and then the icing on the cake was she never returned our IDs so us and we had to drive back and get them the next day. read more

I can't believe nobody's reviewed this post office. Since it provides mail for the entire Stanford student body (and actually has it's own zip code - 94309), here goes: Since this is located on Stanford's campus, you probably won't go here unless you're a student. There's over 20,000 PO Boxes for each student who lives on the campus. There are often long lines of students, faculty, and staff waiting to mail off a letter, get a passport photo, or pick up a package. Some general tips: - If you want to mail something or pick something up, get to the post office on odd hours of the day. DO NOT go during lunch, since everyone will be running their post-office errand at the time. You risk waiting in line for 15+ minutes. Instead, go when everyone else is in class, let's say 10:22AM or 2:37PM. - The PO Boxes are accessible 24 hours a day. Check your mail whenever you want. You probably aren't that important, so there's really no use to check unless you're expecting something. - Box up your package before getting to the post office. I can't tell you how many times I've had to wait for the amateur in front of me to finish signing his letter or licking her envelope, while the post office employee waited annoyingly behind the counter. As an added benefit, is that person wasn't done, you could cut in front of them, allowing you to get on with your life. read more

The USPS on the Stanford campus is not exactly one of my favorite things, so you won't hear me singing its praises Julie Andrews style, but it's been there when I needed it most. And what would Christmas be w/out the long lines and all those bright paper packages tied up with string? This USPS is centrally located next to the campus bookstore, the Tressider student union, a branch of the Stanford Federal Credit Union, AND the famous Claw Fountain (decked in holiday joy, now that the recent "bearial" is over and forgotten - a gruesome ritual that sees an innocent Oski get impaled on its sharp and spiky metal tip before the Cal/Stanford football game each fall. Stuffed animal abuse is SO senseless and cruel). It's easy to come here on a lunch break or if you happen to be touring the campus for fun, as apparently lots of out-of-towners tend to do. I have always received good and timely service here, even if students tend to clog the lines when classes are in session. There are usually two to three counters open, so if one patron seems to be spending an inordinate amount of time getting things squared away, at least the overfill crowds who just need stamps or have letters and packages to mail can funnel through w/out more than 5 minutes or so of waiting. No one comes to the post office for fun. Or to have a memorable experience. Let's face it: it's never gonna be easy for these folks to earn your top Yelp rating, and chances are that - sooner rather than later - you will have a distinctively poor time here or somewhere else, esp. during tax or holiday season. But remember this, as you are reaching for that 1 or 2-star rating: American citizens and permanent residents fund this unsung public service, w/out which it would cost one HELL of lot more than 40-something cents to mail a letter 3000+ miles from Nor Cal to upstate NY. And corporate conveyors of parcels like FedEx, DHL, or UPS definitely charge more than $11.30 to mail a book to Adelaide, South Australia. These are real-world, recent examples, not random ones! Don't let the USPS become any more privatized than it already is. Suck it up and wait patiently for the lines to thin out and don't act like a diva when you get to the front of the queue. B/c the only thing that would really cause me to have a bad time at the post office would be idiotic, immature customers, not stressed-out, overworked staffers. Help make the USPS all that it can be by smiling and saying thank you - or by registering your criticisms in a civil manner. The USPS has been a public good since the days of Ben Franklin. Every package is late by 1 day. Using USPS Tracking, I can see that packages that arrive at 7 am or 8 am to the office are not available for pickup until a day later. I've had small arguments with the employees here about picking up packages that were indicated to have arrived and been sorted. Final tracking info is updated when the post office closes at the end of the day, to indicate that the package had indeed been ready several hours earlier. Sometimes, even showing the employees the tracking info that says something is "ready for pick up" isn't enough to get a package. This is highly inconvenient for receiving perishable goods!!!! The FedEx nearby is better. Their packages sometimes arrive late as well (or the notification comes late) but the service is nicer. read more

I am a student at Stanford (the post office is located on Stanford campus) and I visit this USPS location more than I care to admit to. First off, the service is always SLOW. The feel like clerks are moving under water, taking their sweet time to do anything. I ship at least a couple of packages every week and recently, two of them (expensive textbooks) have gone missing. I know I dropped hem off in a blue box with a tracking number, but online tracking has no record of my mail. It just dissipated into thin air. Worse yet, I could not file an insurance claim because I had no proof that I shipped anything. Being out $300+ dollars I decided to walk every valuable package to this post office and receive a shipping receipt so the next time a package goes missing, I could file an insurance claim. Now, all the clerks at this location get very upset when I try to obtain a receipt like this. They claim that they can not give it to me because by buying a shipping label on-line I supposedly forfeit my rights to in-person service - all NOT TRUE according to usps's own website. (Side note - the usps office off University ave in Palo Alto has no problems giving me these receipts) But the straw that broke the camel's back was another instance of their idiocy. I had a package for someone who has a PO box at this location. So brought the package to the clerk without buying any postage. Then the clerk REFUSED TO WALK 10 FEET and deliver it without me paying a postage fee, as if I was in another state or something!!! I couldn't believe my ears when she said that. If this office was not on campus, I would never set foot in there again. For those who have a choice of locations - AVOID THIS ONE. They will be slow, inefficient, and will charge you for anything and everything. read more

Very rude staff! I came here to mail four international letters. The staff said to me "we ran out of international stamps" and stared back at me. I was like "huh???" as I just want to pay and mail out those letters and I don't even intend to buy some international stamps! She barked back at me saying "Good that we are not busy, so I can use 2 domestics and one 10 cent for your letters." and slowly she taped those stamps on my envelopes as if I owe her a big favor. Very friendly, efficient, little, very little, post office. Lots of students getting mail, mailing mail, asking questions so it can get a little busy at times but it's a fun location to people watch. It isn't a post office that you would go to if you weren't right there because there is no parking around it. The only lot in the area is a Stanford pay lot and then you have to walk forever to get to where the post office is. If you are at the Sanford bookstore for something and just happen to have a parcel or letter to mail then cool, drop it off but don't come here just for the post office. I'm not gonna lie - this post office kind of sucks. Though it's always clean and it's easy to get to your PO Box once you're inside, the lines are always incredibly long (no matter what time of day you drop in) and the staff are reluctant to really help you with anything. Also, there's no parking super nearby, so you can't just swing by to pick something up or drop something off even if you get into the 10 minute loading zone in front of Tresidder, you'll still have to walk about 5 minutes over to the post office. That being said, props to USPS for having well labeled recycling bins all over the place. I just wish they wouldn't have replaced the stamp machines with recycling bins and mail drop slots....no way am I waiting in that line for stamps. read more

No one likes going to the post office but this one is especially bad. During the school year you can count on a 20-25minute line, and during the summer it's not much better, usually around 15 minutes. There's typically only one or two windows open and their employees move at glacial speeds. They need to get a self-service postage machine already. I will be back due to the convenience of their location but always end up cursing the place on my way out. Bring your phone, a book, or something to entertain yourself. read more

I'll give it 3 stars for being located in the heart of campus, near the convenient Tressider Student Union facility and buildings that I happen to have class at. If you are in the sciences or located over at the med school, I'd assume that this facility doesn't really do much for you being out here. Lines can be terrible at lunchtime but if you go during less popular times it's usually not more than a 5-10 minute wait. Brusque staff that spend their time barking at the students. Has boxes and a small selection of greeting cards. What bothers me about this place is where some things get routed -- please note that if you do a move off campus (and possibly from one residence to another in grad housing) you may think putting your mail on hold is a good idea. DO NOT DO IT!!!! During a somewhat complicated house move from EV to off-campus, I requested online to have my mail placed on hold here at Stanford USPS for pickup, thinking I would stop by and get it when I came for class the next week. When I came to pick it up, I was told to call East Palo Alto's USPS facility (AKA Satan's Asshole) for pickup and that they don't do mail holds at this location. What they didn't tell me was that this would be a long, drawn-out saga of hell, in which the workers at EPa were always confused, the supervisor had no idea what was going on, the phones never get answered, and in short, you will never end up getting that mail you responsibly put on hold. I'm not sure who was more irresponsible to me as a mail patron: EPa for losing 2 weeks of mail, or Stanford for continuing to route mail holds to that location. Very convenient location for those of us who work on the Stanford campus. The staff must handle hundreds and hundreds of students, faculty, campus staff, and visitors daily, and despite this, my transactions have always gone well. I frequently sell stuff on ebay so I've gotten to know post offices quite well. It's typical of USPSs - there's almost always a line, but they let me skip the line to drop off my pre-labeled packages. They don't scrutinize my package weight (see my review of the Boston USPS!) and are generally friendly and smiling. Only annoying thing is parking near here if you don't have the right permit. read more

I am giving this post office a 4 star review, which is VERY rare for post offices. Who likes going to the post office anyways??? I like this location better than any of the other ones I have gone off campus. This post office is located inside of Stanford campus, next to the campus BOOKSTORE. There is usually always 2 people at their stations, more if it gets really busy. If you come during lunch hours of course its going to be busy, DUH. If you come during the last week of the semester when kids are trying to mail everything home, its going to be busy. I've found them to be pretty empty during the first 2 hours they open. STAFF: I see them smile more than other post offices hahah. Like all post offices though, they probably are tired of people not knowing the correct procedures of mailing various items. PICK UP: If you are just coming here to pick up a package, go straight to the doorbell and blue door to the right of the room. Here's a tip if you do drive to this post office, though -- if you're fast, you can park behind the post office, either in a parking space (if there's one available, there are only 3 or so), or just park on the sloped area next to the bollards. We applied for passports at the Stanford campus post office. PROS: - you can make an appointment - relatively convenient parking at Tressider Lot; pay with credit card or cash using pay machine. 5 minute walk to campus post office. - our passports were mailed to us in 3 weeks. It's wise to call beforehand and ask them to clarify what you need to bring. Some important things to remember: - Fill out all forms beforehand http://travel.state.gov/passport/forms/forms_847.html - Bring two passport photos for each person - You need two forms of ID (see website, link below, for what qualifies). The important thing is to bring the original ID, plus a photocopy of it (front and back if need be). Otherwise, they'll charge you for photocopying. - If you are applying for kids' passports, the kids need to be present as well as both parents. - I don't think they take credit cards for payment. We had to write checks. Note: We had to write a separate check for each application. We couldn't write one check for all 4 applications. Lucky thing I had 4 left in my checkbook. It's hard to believe that at a place like Stanford University that even the most simple tasks are done in the most inefficient manner you can imagine. Prepare to wait in line for 45 min plus, wait two days for them to find your package in the store after it has arrived there, or have one person out of a pretty large staff hunt out your package for 15 minutes in back rooms. I had to go in to do this- even on the wall it says- "need a passport, make an appointment- call ***-****" Don't call. Go in. Expect to wait at least 20 minutes. What a pain. This place makes me cringe in pain. I only went here once. The woman behind the register could not comprehend that I wanted to ship my item to a PO. even though I told her I wanted to ship my item to the PO listed on the package. Instead she thought the item was going to be directly shipped to Korea. Long story short, I was over charged $30 and left feeling like I had just been ripped off. A few days later I received an apology letter and a check for the difference in rates at my home address. However, standing 25 minutes or longer in line, to interact with someone that is not aware of how to ship an item to a PO, given the country's current situation, leaves me entirely too frustrated to come back to this place. read more

Tried to renew my daughters passport here. Made an appointment through the USPS website. Day of appointment got a call saying that someone was out sick and that they needed to reschedule. I agreed and an appointment was made for the next week at 3:15 (normally the last appointment is 3:00). I was told 3:15 was ok because all other times were booked. Arrived and was told I was not on the list. I explained what had happened and was told again that I was not on the list. I asked what I should do and was given a lecture about how I should have gotten the name of the person who called and anyway the last appointment is at 3:00. Then person goes in the back. I ask the other person working the counter if I can talk to their supervisor. I'm told they are not there, but that they will call them. 10 minutes go by and original person comes out and say he will start the process. He looks at the forms and asks if I have pictures and I say I was going to have them done there. He then informs me that they have no film. At this point I see it is hopeless and go to leave. He informs me that I could call a number he gives me to see if I could get another appointment. I try the number he gives me and no one answers, no voice mail either. As I leave he suggests I make another appointment and I wonder when the USPS became such a Kafkaesque nightmare. read more

USPS tracking number says packages are delivered--- yet, it takes 2-3 days AFTER website indicates it has been delivered to be available. You pay a premium for Priority Shipping, yet this location is so understaffed and incompetent that they are unable to have packages that are clearly there--- available for the customer to receive. Only go here if you really have to. They recently removed the stamp vending machine. I had to stand in line for 20 minutes to buy a $0.44 stamp. The post master was a jerk when I asked about it too.
