The building is a fine brick 1852 church on the National Register of Historic Landmarks, which went through several other uses before ending up as the US PO for Newtonville. Unfortunately the inside's been gutted and refitted to the Post Office's needs - in mid-20th century stasis - so you can't see much on the inside. It's a very narrow counter dominated by old-school brass combination PO boxes (cool enough) but quite cramped. So what there is to see of the architecture, you can see from outside. We went to see the Chester Arthur "Exhibit" (see photos) which is basically a collection of clippings about forty or fifty years old. It's an oddity, here based on the tenuous connection to Arthur's father, who by local legend lived nearby for a number of years. The locals swear it was Arthur's "childhood" home, but given he was 26 years old when his father first took up residence and practicing law in Kansas and New York City during those years, it's a bit of a stretch. Arthur's father, a minister, may have preached at the church briefly. This local legend was ballooned to include renaming a nearby street "Arthur Street" and was probably enhanced by the fact Arthur's buried in the nearby Albany Rural Cemetery, but the actual historical significance for one of our most obscure Presidents is somewhere between low and non-existent. That said: there's just something really touching about the fact this little display has sat here unchanged for half a century. If you go in to buy stamps, admire it, but I wouldn't plan your vacation trip around it.

The Colonie Post Office is mine, even though I don't live in the town of Colonie. Its address also totally overwhelmed my navigation, but I got a lovely tour of other side streets. This is a larger post office, more function but also a bit gloomier. I appreciated the automatic opening doors, as I expect those carrying in parcels also would. The employees here are certainly helpful, but maybe not quite as enthusiastic (though my regular postal carrier, who I assume works here, is quite friendly and helpful. Hey, as long as I get done what I need, no problems.

Sure, you can get stuck in line here (don't be a fool and come on a Saturday afternoon right before Christmas) but usually I am in and out fast. When I do get delayed, it is because some idiot brought a bunch of packages likely containing batteries and perfumes and bombs and needs extra insurance on each of them... so they take a while. There isn't much the USPS can do about staffing for these situations anyway. So, just come at non-lunch hours and you will have no problems with this place.

I get it. I've been to plenty Post Offices in my life to feel the same. This place, however, really is different, and special. Why? Well, maybe for me because it is hidden in a popular strip mall just minutes from my work. That means not only can I take care of postal stuff quickly at lunch, I can also grab a bite and still be in time for my 1:00pm meeting. Also, I don't know if it is because of the location, or that people just don't mail stuff any more these days, but there is hardly ever a line. It is a tiny spot, not like the Post Offices in Down Town Albany, but it still has everything, and the Postal Workers at the counter are always pleasant. My favorite thing about this post office, is that they are open Saturday until 5pm. That is always nice when I need to take care of some mailings on the weekend. You won't find many other post offices open all day Saturday, which leads me to believe many more people appreciate and use this location. And, like I said, if going on a Saturday, I always pick a nice place to eat in the plaza, which has many.

This is by far the most unprofessional and poorly managed post office I have ever dealt with…read more My boyfriend urgently needs his passport and scheduled an appointment well in advance. On the morning of his original appointment, the office called and canceled, telling him that he would need to reschedule. He did exactly that. When we showed up for his newly scheduled appointment on the correct date and time, we were told by an employee, "Ohhh, we canceled everyone today. We probably should have called." We were then told to reschedule yet again for a weekday. So, once again, he rescheduled. And once again, the appointment was canceled the morning of--without even leaving a voicemail. When we tried calling back to find out what was going on, the office was still closed. At that point, he had no choice but to physically drive to the post office, only to be told that his appointment had been canceled. This is completely unacceptable. At this point, this is beyond frustrating. People have jobs, schedules, transportation arrangements, and important deadlines. A passport is not something that can simply be put off indefinitely. Customers should not have to repeatedly rearrange their lives, make unnecessary trips, and waste their time because this location cannot properly manage appointments or communicate cancellations. The complete lack of communication, organization, and professionalism at this location is unacceptable. Canceling an appointment once is frustrating. Canceling it repeatedly--especially without properly notifying the customer--is absolutely ridiculous. Management seriously needs to address what is happening at this location. Customers deserve better than this. If this office cannot honor the appointments it allows people to schedule, then there needs to be a serious change in how this location is being operated.
