I send an item express. Online tracking said it was delivered two days later, but in fact, it didn't arrive to its destination until six days later. When I went to ask why they said there was a weather delay, which was false because it was fine in California or six days. And then he said we don't guarantee anything it got delivered. This USPS location has been a lifesaver for me a few times and most recently during the start to this new year. I go out of my way to this location mainly to use their self-service kiosk, which is open 24 hours! That's unheard of for USPS (especially in the Bay Area). Now I have never tested that 24-hour kiosk availability, but I have been here anywhere from 5:30pm to 8pm to mail a package I need to send quickly and it was open. Evening hours makes it super convenient to mail a package after work. And that self-service kiosk gets popular because it's had long lines a couple times. As for buying stamps, mailing supplies, customer service, etc., I can't really comment as I have never been to the window or interacted with a clerk (I prefer to buy stamps online at the website, as you get the full selection vs. in-store where they could be, and often are, out of certain designs). But the lobby space is big, spacious, clean and has PO Boxes available as well. It's been a serious pain that so many post office locations got rid of their kiosks, but I'm so glad there's still one within a 15-20 minute drive from me and has late hours too. read more

I would give zero stars if that were an option. My experience dealing with an employee at this location was so egregious and simply unbelievable, that it may get the award for worst customer service experience in my 56 years of being alive. I don't have the psychological bandwidth to go into the details of how mind numbing the employee's ineptness and flat out unprofessional behavior was, but after filing a formal complaint with the postal service, hopefully I can get some kind of hearing wherein I can see this person lose their job, because they should be fired. My complaint isn't with the Lafayette California Post Office so much as it is with the carriers that deliver my mail. Apparently, since the beginning of time, postal deliveries haven't been made in this neighborhood the same time every day. That means that for five days, say, deliveries are made after 6:00 p.m. and then - SURPRISE! - the next day's delivery is made at 8:30 a.m., meaning that if you have anything to be picked up, unless you get it out there when it's dark out, it generally must wait a day and a half until the next p.m. delivery/pickup. But that's not the worst part. Over the past few months, when I leave mail in the mail box for pick up, and I put up the flag as I was taught to do as a child, all the carrier does is throw that day's delivery on top of what I'd like picked up, and leave the flag up. Maybe they do that in case a competent carrier is scheduled to service my route the next day, and will know what those signals (flag up and mail already in the mail box) mean. Who's to say. Or maybe - I'm just speculating here - the carriers just enjoy visualizing a postal customer - we're "customers" remember? - driving around looking for a mailbox or, even better, driving 15 minutes directly to the post office to post the mail there. Kind of like sharing carriers' responsibilities with them. In any case, with all due respect to postal employees who actually do their jobs, it doesn't seem that difficult for the postal carriers on my route to actually act professional and do theirs! read more

Possibly the worst post office in Contra Costa County. They are all unfriendly, some are downright rude and entitled. More importantly, THEIR TRACKING IS LAZY. 90% of the packages (with tracking numbers) I drop off here DO NOT get scanned within 24 hours or until they are well beyond Lafayette and the immediate area. On the other hand 90% of packages that I drop off at Orinda or Moraga DO GET SCANNED. As a small business that cares about my customers, I want my customers to know that I've sent their items... Lafayette Post Office does not help me succeed. I've avoided this post office for the past two years (taking the extra time to go to Orinda or Moraga where they are competent, pleasant and friendly) but today, I thought why-not. Well, in one two-minute visit, I was reminded of their terrible service and attitude. Just standing there, I can feel the toxicity the staff has to other customers besides me. I suggest going to Orinda or Moraga... where they are nicer, more competent, and appreciate their customers. read more

A Citibank envelope with $900 in cash, and multiple checks got mixed in with out going mail. By the feel of it and the dollar signs on the front of the envelope it was obvious a chunk of change was in there. The post office returned the envelope to the bank unopened within a week. We've lived in Lafayette since the 1960's and have never had a problem with them. No system is perfect, but if people who do not make a lot of money didn't casually slip an obvious envelope filled with cash in their pocket must care about others. Shut down the United States Post Offices? I don't think so. ps: I took one star off because the only problem I've had is with the woman that everyone talks about in the following posts. She basically called me an idiot for questioning if I should use a sharpie to edit an address on a box. I rarely use a sharpie, and was just asking. Her response was inappropriate and rude. This is the best post office in contra costa. I am a small business sending out 200+ packages a week. Even though I use endecia now since I was taking too much time at the counter but they are still friendly and know me by name name when I need stamps. By the way these people do not make the rules and they cannot break them so don't get frustrated with them. read more

Did not deliver my package. I dropped two things here on the same day. I handed one off to an employee and put the other one in the bin next to the kiosk. One of them got delivered and the other was never shipped and can't be found. Good thing the $350 item was delivered and the $45 one was lost. I'm giving this two stars instead of one because parking is abundant and you can drop packages off in the bin any time including after 5pm. read more

Came by with a letter for a PO Box in Lafayette and figured I'd drop it off so it went today. Right? Wrong. Me: Hi, I'd like to drop this off for a PO Box here. Cashier: That will be $25.50. Me: For what? Cashier: Same day service is $25.50. You can't just drop it off like that. Me: so I can put it in a mail box outside, and you can bring it inside for 1 stamp, but if I give it to you, it's $25.50? Cashier: no. We'll take it to Oakland before we bring it in. Anything else? I drive to Moraga rather than endure the rude attitude of one of the workers there. She's absolutely awful!

In the time I stood in line, I could've delivered the letter to Texas myself. When the line is to the door at 2:30 PM on a weekday, something's not working. Three desk agents not enough? Add another 2 or 3 or install about another 20 self-service kiosks. When it was finally my turn, I bought the postage and was ready to send when I realized I hadn't sealed the envelope. I asked the woman if she had a piece of tape I could stick to the back of the envelope. "No sorry, we have nothing." You're a post office and you don't have *anything* to seal the back of an envelope? Unbelievable. Couple this with the abysmal traffic that plagues downtown Lafayette and a 1% chance of finding a parking spot makes this post office a worse affair then a trip to the dentist's. As the city continues to push it's 'Shop Lafayette First' campaign, I take more and more of my needs to Moraga. Where a trip downtown doesn't involve waiting in standstill traffic and praying that a parking spot will be available. read more

The pros Automated kiosk for self mailing never more than 4 or 5 people in line max Half of the staff are very friendly The Cons Shared parking lot with Trader Joes and CVS so after 11 am parking can be painful. Combination of Rossmoor oldsters and giant Suburban SUVs make for many close calls in the parking lot Half of the staff are very unfriendly. One woman seems to enjoy finding some obscure rule the customer did not know about. They have no supplies whateversoever so your package better be perfect. Just preprinted forms and PO shipping boxes for purchase. If you hate bad parking lots, go to the Orinda PO. Less than 10 min away and much bigger and better layed out parking lot read more

Better than average Post Office: I went before lunch, so there was no real wait. The staff here are OK, if a little grumpy - but then they have to deal with people like the woman trying to use the display shipping box. There's postage machines here too unlike the horrible Temescal location. Best of all? It's by Diablo Foods and Trader Joe's. read more

Stop complaining! The lines may be long but the people that work here are super nice. I have had my PO Box here for years. They always say hello and ask where my grandson, Jack is. When my daughter-in-law went in with Jack one day and said hello Jack she told them that she thought everyone in town knows Jack. When you go in just stay calm. I have had mostly good days at the post office. Big shout out to Dawrell for always being super friendly. The janitor is also ALWAYS in a great mood and just the kindest person. Its does get very busy, especially now with their shortened hours, so my big tip would be to use the self kiosk or better yet, print online for larger items (if you have an eBay account you can do this) read more

Patrons and service are all over the map at this tiny location. We try to use the local post office as much as possible. Unfortunately, the extreme hit or miss experiences at this location result in us using the automated machine, our online account and/or going to a major hub for faster service. We've also had to pick up a few too many packages from the other building at the opposite end of town. To add to the frustration, parking is absolutely horrendous and they try to compensate with green zones. If these designated parking postal parking spots were actually used only by postal patrons, the process would be smooth. Novel idea though. They never answer their phone. I had to go in to ask them about the passport services because apparently no one believes in telephones there. When I got there, I was told they don't do passport applications on Saturday anymore. Ok, well, maybe update the info online then? Also, passport applications are done by appt only which is fine except when you try to set one up, they are either not available or they tell you to go to another post office. I should mention that when I got there, there were only two customers and it was not busy at all so I really don't understand the not answering phone thing. read more

I was trying to track a package I had lost the receipt for and the customer service was very bad and didn't help at all or even attempt to help me. The people behind the counter had told me that I could just print another receipt from the kiosk I had used to buy the shipping label but in trying to do so, I found that that wasn't true at all. When I went back to them to say that, they then said that they couldn't help me. Two weeks passed and the package that I had sent and should have taken 5 days to ship never arrived and I'm extremely pissed because some sentimental items were in it. read more

If you are going for passport services at least, apparently there are NO appointments left until three months from now. I made 8 calls this morning until they finally answered, informing me that there are no openings to take a photo of me/drop off my renewal papers. "Open" 8 hours per day but booked. I don't think so. Horrible customer service, rude. I mostly go there for work to buy stamps, etc. I started using machine to buy stamps and other mailing stuff, because of each of them always rude and nasty. What gets me the most the don't respect elderly and talks down to them. They don't even deserve 1 star. All of them needs to be replaced so is management. read more

I like this post office because it has one of the new automated postal machines, so you can send certified mail in the middle of the night. The downside of this location is that it is located in a shopping center that does not have enough parking, so using it in the middle of the day is difficult. read more

DO I HAVE TO GIVE ANY STARS TO THIS POST OFFICE.. THIS IS THE ABSOLUTLEY WORST SERVICE EVER!!! Every time I go to this post office I get the worst service ever. No smile, just miserable zombies with no smile on their faces ever and ....attitude. It's obvious they all hate their jobs. Why is that? EXAMPLES OF JUST TWO SEPERATE INCIDENTS: I take a flat rate USPS BOX to go out of the country and they say that it's too heavy and the seams don't touch and I need to re-box it. I replied "no I don't" ... take my same box to Moraga same day and there is no problem - no issue and they actually smile there. Hmmmmmm? I open a P O Box for my small business and personally dropped off a check for the semi annual billing it in the slot. A week later I find out they lock me out. So I take time off of work to find out why and they said "non-payment". How is that possible? I dropped it in their mail slot but they have no idea where my payment is? It's a $35 dollar fee to place a stop payment on my check, which is half of the cost of the box. I go in to ask where my check is... They don't know. Hmmm Then mysteriously a month and a half later I receive the check in my home mail saying they just received the check and noted a bogus date. I then called the postmaster with a detailed message and get no return call. read more

I don't bother with the people who work there anymore... unless I can't get what I need through the automated kiosk, which is great and is open late. (Although once a lady hogged it weighing and sending dozens of big envelopes one at a time! And then was annoyed when I asked her if the people in line behind her could use the machine real quick!) Trouble is, I recently used the kiosk to weigh, stamp and mail a small padded envelope... and it was returned to sender for insufficient postage!!!! Argh!!!! What the heck?? I was pleasantly surprised to get a passport appointment the Friday before the following Tuesday this month (September). I brought all of my required forms and documentation and including taking photos the appointment took only 15 minutes. Received my passport in the mail 2 1\2 weeks later. Not sure if I just got lucky or if this is normal, but it was SO easy and the woman helping me was very nice. read more

Lafayette, Post Office SUCKS! Epitome of lazy government workers. Called 3x at 12pm on January 13, no one answered. The phone would ring several times and disconnect. I chalked it up to "It's Friday, and lunch time. They're probably on a break or really busy." January 16, 2017, Monday morning at 8am, I called again, redialed twice then gave them the excuse of "Maybe it's too early. I'll try again later." So I called on Monday, 10:30am (same thing, no answer. So I redialed 3x.) Called every day since then on varying times. Different times, same results: NOTHING. Today, Thursday, January 19, I'm done making excuses for their lazy asses. These people need to get fired ... and WHEN the post office closes their doors (OUT OF BUSINESS) ... I've known these people to be very rude, and the African American woman is the worst! Today I was in line, she came out of the customer service area to help the line and seemed annoyed at the start. A man stepped up with a package and wanted to know which form to fill out, and she said the type of form would depend on the weight, so he asked how he could tell that, she got annoyed and said go weigh it!...and step out of line ...she had a machine at the desk to weigh it! Thankfully I got the other lady, an Asian woman, and I actually just had a question about mail delivery in our area, in general...she was very nice and helpful and ended the conversation with, "Happy Holidays".... I appreciate her customer service attitude and will NEVER again go into the other woman's line! I will let people in line pass me, before doing that! Today my family of five arrived at our town post office in Lafayette, CA during its posted passport services hours, 10am-noon. It was a rainy day and the post office was empty of customers. Both parents have to be present to get kids' passports, so I towed my husband (who has a demanding job and is unavailable during the week) and my three kids, aged 8, 5 and 2, with all documents and passport photos already taken. The staff was, as usual, unfriendly and with a complete lack of service culture. The older lady behind the counter offered us an appointment in APRIL (this was January 16) even though we were there, no one else was, and I had all documentation and both parents. Seemed her process is to fill the appointments and when people find a more expeditious was of getting it done, enjoy a work day with little to do. This lack of service orientation and systems that are so onerous and lengthy is the reason that the post office will someday be privatized. I hope this lazy employee will be spoken to. I can't believe how broken our passport services process is in this country and what a lack of service there is in postal workers. read more

This post office is the WORST post office I have ever been to-this rating does not even deserve one star. I was dropping off my padded envelope that contained a iphone for return to the phone carrier on my way home. I was ready to drive up to the mail drop off to drop it off, instead saw the mail carrier taking out the mail to put into the post office. I asked her nicely if she could take my padded envelope and extended my arm as far as I could to get the piece of mail to her. She was about 3 steps away from me and never made an effort to get my mail. After trying to reach to her to give her my mail, she grabbed the edge of the envelope and dropped it on the ground. Her reply was (In an attitude) "I hope there is nothing broken in there!" My reply: "I hope not!" I went back into the post office while the doors were opened and asked the carrier at the counter for my envelope back. The post office workers were so rude and rudely told me that they were closed. I explained to them that their postal worker dropped my padded envelope and I needed to check and see if the phone was broken. The workers at the counter cut me off and told me I couldn't get my mail back. I was so mad, customers saw the whole thing and they agreed the workers were very rude to me. The carrier from outside came out the front door and handed me my envelope back and yelled, "Here!" in an attitude. I yelled and told her how the post office was the worst post office ever and how rude the carrier was. She yelled back at me with garbage I couldn't understand. I will be doing my post office business elsewhere and will never step foot at this location to mail my mail. Luckily, the phone in the envelope was not broken or cracked. The staff here need a lesson in manners and public etiquette. read more

The postal service at the post office and annex in Lafayette, California is a disaster, causing serious problems for us. We've never experienced anything like it before. Over the last 3 years we have had purchased items with tracking numbers never delivered or accounted for, and documents from the county (benefits) and state (DMV) undelivered and unaccounted for. These have caused numerous headaches, financial strain, and bureaucratic nightmares for us. In general there is mail we simply don't receive, on an ongoing basis. I waited on an important result from the doctor's office regarding cancer screening and it never arrived. After calling the hospital I was informed that they mailed it, but just like many times before, it never made it to our mailbox. When we attempt to resolve these issues we are directed to the postal annex but they are unable to account for the mail and send us to the postal inspector's hotline--a number that leads to endless hold time and never to a real person. There is of course the question of mail theft, but still the post office and annex will not help us solve that question in any way either, they just send us to a hotline where no one answers. Once, when we went on vacation, we requested our mail to be held. When we returned home our mail was stuffed into and falling out of our mailbox. They had never honored the formal mail hold request and there was nothing we could do about it. There is something terribly amiss with the postal service in Lafayette California and the hope of resolving these issues looks bleak. read more

Can you give a minus 10? This perhaps was the worst customer service nightmare. All starting from multiple unanswered phone calls to see about their "walk-in" passport policy. Website says: "open 10 to 12 on Saturday", nothing else. once there, at 11:30, we were told you need to be there at opening and get on a list, after that time no go. We asked why no one answered the phone, got "I don't know why". Then asking for more info we got repeated not my problem from a very unhelpful clerk named Marc. He said we could leave now since nothing would happen today anymore. I mentioned that I needed a minute to give my 4 yr son some candy because he is a type 1 diabetic going low and he said to me, "I don't care", in quite a rude way. After I mentioned that this was not the way to treat customers and that he should truly think about what he says to people, he told me " the world doesn't revolve around you!" Got the postmasters phone number from another employee (nicer lady) because he was not there, of course no answer. I admit, I raised my voice at the end so pissed off, but really? As we left a guy was getting his mail and said everyone at this postoffice is always are as€hol!$ there... There was a sign with 5 star customer service rating...Really? read more

I give this place -100. They left a notice note in my mailbox saying I was not there to receive the package. I was home all day and no one knocked. So I went there to go pick it up myself, they told me that they were closed and told me to leave. read more

The Lafayette California postal "service" (both the retail section and the annex for distribution)deserve negative stars. I've lived in this town for over 7 years and in that time I have never managed to get any certified mail. I receive the little orange card to sign, I sign it, and the next day I get another orange card on top of the one I already signed. So I go to the annex to retrieve it since quit obviously my carrier is in capable of returning with it and the annex has no record of either of the orange card numbers I've brought them. The lady who helped me was pleasant enough and took my number to get back with me.....nothing after that. That was ages ago. Today, however, takes the cake for me. I have a delivery which has a tracking number and was "out for delivery" at 8:33 am. It's now 9:30 pm and although I received a mail box full of junk mail I have not received my package. The way it's listed it sounds like it must still be in the dude's truck. Who goes home for the night with packages in their truck? My fear is that the item I ordered from Hong Kong is going be lost right here at home. Tomorrow will tell. read more

I would give this negative stars if possible, without question. So far, nothing pleasant to report. Our packages are never delivered, but tracking says that the mail man attamptes and failed. Our mail box is in a very obvious spot. I tried calling them and waited on hold for 25 minutes before hanging up. Tried again later and same thing- no answer. Judging from te other reviews I'm sure it will sure be quite th pleasure to interact with them in person when I try to retrieve my package tomorrow. Next time I'll be mailing packages to my parents' house. The drive is worth it if that means I can avoid the extremely frustrating "service" at Lafayette. What a nightmare. What is wrong with this post office. I have called and called different times of the day for 2 weeks and NO ONE ANSWERS the phone! Ridiculous. I even had another post office tell me, "yeah, I have heard they don't answer the phone. Call in the morning when the supervisor is there". Seriously??
