    Uncle Marty’s Shipping Office - Uncle Marty's Shipping Office - October 2019

    Uncle Marty’s Shipping Office

TL;DR: For the really important stuff, trust these guys…read more Longer version: Was in Ithaca for a family memorial service; thus the ceramics and pottery we were shipping back to California had a great deal of value to us. How do you ship several pounds of bowls, ceramic art and sculptures? Could have used the Post Office, UPS Store, etc...and probably end up with a box of fragments when it arrived. Found Uncle Marty's on Yelp, and was encouraged by the reviews, so we drove the rental with a trunk full of ceramics there. Staff was very understanding, kind, and friendly. At the same time, while they were gentle on the items and very mindful of how to pack them, they were also very conscious of the cost implications, and worked through several different options to find the right number of boxes (and the right sizes) to ship off the items to two different locations (daughter in Chicago, us back in California). While it didn't end up being inexpensive (not Uncle Marty's fault...FedEx ain't never been the cheapest), I am pleased that every single item arrived perfectly packed, safe, and undamaged. I'm not sure if I'll ever find myself again needing to ship things from upstate New York, but if I do I know where I'll go.

I stopped here recently because I used to ship via DHL from my office, but campus is closed and I'm…read morenow not able to schedule a pick-up from the same location. I have a DHL account I've used for charging the cost of shipments; however, the person I spoke with at the front desk of Uncle Marty's while trying to ship out my parcel said that they have a specific retail export account number that all shipments get assigned to when being scheduled for pick-up... so they can't use alternative DHL accounts for charging shipments. When I offered to pay for the shipment with my procurement card, that seemed to be fine... until I inquired further about whether or not duties/fees could be charged to that same procurement card upon their arrival at the destination processing facility (I was shipping to Tanzania, and this is an easy process when shipping via your own DHL account). I've typically ensured our office - as the sender - makes payment on duties/fees for a parcel, at least within the last couple years (it expedites the delivery, and many international institutions in the developing world don't have the easily accessible means to pay for duties/fees on an item that's being provided to them as a donation). Since I wasn't able to ensure that duties/fees would be paid by me/my procurement card as the sender - and I couldn't use my own DHL account - I ended up leaving, parcel in-hand, without being able to get it processed and sent out via Uncle Marty's. I was also able to leave with a single plastic waybill packet, as well as a paper waybill... after specifically requesting both items (more than once). While DHL has certainly preferred folks go through their electronic scheduling system in recent years, that has proven to sometimes be problematic when shipping to certain parts of the world (given the need for indicating villages / areas that aren't especially known)... so I like to have a couple paper waybills handy, and I *HAVE* been able to ship out with paper waybills (i.e. without DHL rejecting the parcel because of a paper waybill) without issue. In the beginning of working from home back in March, I had gone to the Pack & Ship store that used to be on the corner of the Commons to ship out an identical parcel. There? No issues whatsoever (and yes, I used a paper waybill for that parcel). But that store is closed now, so I opted to try Uncle Marty's. Unfortunately, the process isn't as easy here as it was at the store on the Commons (which was so much easier because I was just able to use my DHL account number for any / all charges). TL;DR The explanation above probably includes more complicating factors than most shipments being sent out via Uncle Marty's, but it was my experience. The guy I spoke with at the desk was certainly friendly and answered my questions helpfully (hence the rating), but it's important to know the complicating factors of trying to use your own DHL account, etc.

This is a significant positive and may mean that you will still want to use them despite the many negatives. Negatives. 1. The place is student run and the response to phone calls and emails is sketchy at best. 2. If you have ever used a moving company, this is going to be very different. 3. The web portal is very rudimentary and it is hard to know what you are ordering. In fact because there is essentially no explanation you will most likely not get what you were expecting. 4. If you order packing, they will be very confused. Packing usually means the movers bring the boxes and you point and they pack. Big Red Shipping expects that you bought all of the boxes in advance and know where everything goes. Almost no one would ever correctly guess the number of boxes that they need. So the onus is on you to over buy boxes. If you don't have enough boxes, it is not going to storage. My suggestion. Only use BRSS if you are happy to pack your own stuff well in advance and only need movers to put it into storage. The packing service isn't what anybody actually would want.

The entire 2 day move was more stressful as a result of the services rendered by BSB. We have had expert movers move us across states so we are aware of what to expect and we communicated our needs clearly to the owner Eric and throughout the move. We even had to help and be a part of the move to get it done. Most of the crew did not follow our instructions or Eric's. Eric himself caused damages. The service was not as promised and definitely not expert, there was less care taken than we have experienced with day movers hired from UHaul. One item that was damaged was partially remedied with a good resolution but when I provided Eric the list of additional damages, including damages to the lawn, large ruts, and tried to work on a resolution to reimburse us for damages he showed up unannounced to our home with an officer. I was never provided the certificate of insurance which I requested prior to the move. I understand our move was complex but we were charged an additional $2,233. The discussion about damages went from civil to no discussion at all. The move was not complete after the 2 days and he promised to finish it on Saturday but he reneged and instead showed up with an officer and was not willing to discuss the damages.

To start with the bad, I sent my son a time sensitive package with DHL. When DHL decided that a redelivery attempt was too much trouble, they turned the package over to the Post Office. I received an email that the package was "undeliverable" (this after a delivery attempt had been made and a door tag left). Turns out that the DHL printed label was incomplete, it had the right street name and number and had the apartment number but not the letters. An issue yes but making the package undeliverable --no! First of all, someone (first DHL driver?) had written the apartment letters on the package. Second, I don't think USPS even went to the building. There is a package desk in the lobby that could have taken the package or directed the driver to the right apartment. Luckily my son has a car so getting 5 miles from Collegetown to the Warren Rd location by the airport wasn't a big deal. But it is more than 30 minutes by bus, each way. Now for the very good. Bill, who answered the phone, was the friendliest post office employee I've ever spoken to. He was helpful, considerate and responsive. He found the package right away and placed it at the front desk for my son to collect.

Went to mail a couple letters at the outside mailbox on Saturday afternoon. The box was jammed full right to the brim where letters were almost coming out the in slot. I've seen this happen before at the Lansing Post Office. While I consider this to be unforgivable for a Post Office, I guess it happens. So I went back Sunday afternoon and the mail box was STILL filled to the brim. You gotta be kidding me. As it states on the outside of that specific mailbox, it's supposed to be emptied TWICE on Saturdays. You could have reached in and grabbed other people's mail, if you felt so inclined. I've had many issues with this certain post office but this is beyond the pale. I don't care if somebody called in sick or whatever, the post master or a supervisor should realize the Christmas rush is upon us. This is unacceptable. The Ithaca Post Office has to do better.
