Healthy food, quick service, lots of options, bowls, salads, sandwiches, and all for a reasonable price. We came twice over the weekend, searching for some healthy meals and Urbane Cafe did not disappoint. Of all the things tried, I liked the Protein salad the most. This is primarily due to the balsamic dressing, which distinguishes it from the other salads that have the heavier Green Goddess or Chipotle Ranch dressings. There is a lot of overlap in toppings, but the garbanzo beans and pecans were a good hard-soft combo. The Cilantro Chicken salad is similar, and has the Chipotle ranch dressing. This dressing is not big on flavor, but is heavier and not as healthy. Further, the star Cilantro Chicken is only lightly flavored. The Golden West Salad and Peruvian Sandwich are two seasonal items that are disappearing next week. Both are similar, with one in salad form and the other in sandwich form. The Sandwich was enjoyed more, made on focaccia bread, the sweet potato brings a bit of healthy sweetness. The chicken was lightly seasoned, a touch of heat, but was a tad dry and could have used more of the marinade. Urbane Cafe cannot provide more of this, but can give more of the Green Goddess dressing since that is the spread on the sandwich, and this did help a bit. The Peruvian comes with a side salad, mixed green and mandarin orange pieces on top, a vinaigrette dressing that was tasty. The Golden West Salad was the same general toppings but in salad form, and the bread really helped the sandwich. For the salad you are provided with the bread on the side though. Lastly, the Soba Noodles and their garlic dressing were tasty. Only complaint here is that the noodles were really cold, likely pulled out of the fridge at close to freezer temperature, which significantly decreased the enjoyment of the dish. read more

This is the best sandwich shop I have ever eaten at. I have eaten many different types of sandwiches in my life, but this affordable/classy place wins hands down. The food comes out so fast, but not made in a hurry. Let me tell you that their sandwiches are made with such finesse and precision. You can see them make the bread fresh from the stove and really try their drinks they are so delicious! (A bit too much sugar though, in my opinion). I swear on my soul this place will leave you satisfied and full. I am so depressed that this business is not near where I live. I would eat their sandwiches for breakfast, lunch, and dinner all the time. My girlfriend and I had their tri-tip and bbq chicken sandwiches. They are the most popular items and my god they are. When I finished their godly sandwiches, I honestly thought about taking another sandwich to go with my girlfriend and eat it at home for dinner. Bathroom is clean and the location is set beautifully. I spoke to Lily a cashier that should not be on duty if she is not experienced in dealing with to go orders and the apps from which to go orders are ordered from. Lily explained to me that they ran out of the item chimichurri an HOUR ago and did not know how to work or update the system of postmates and asked my postmate to call me even though she processed the order something in which the order couldve been denied before the order is processed through the restaurant. She couldve called me before my postmate even got there and not wasted his time as that is also an option through postmates. Lily allowed the order to processed let the postmate get here and then had the postmate call me to let me know I could cancel the order or order something else which made no sense if you did not know how to work the postmates system then how would my order be updated?? Not to mention she needed me to cancel the order from my side as she did not know how to cancel it from her side. So I had to cancel my order and got charged full price for the whole order in which I did not get to enjoy at all. I am upset at this businesses higher ups for not adequately training their workers correctly if a cashier does not know how to work the apps maybe then that specific person Lily should not be positioned there for that task as customers can lose out on money! read more

My partner has been enjoying Urbane Cafe sandwiches at work meetings, so he was excited to see one opening nearby. They have a sizeable menu with sandwiches, soups, and salad. I've been here two times and I can say that I am currently a fan of the food at this new spot on Lake. Out of the two times I've went, their Chimichurri Steak has consistently been awesome (I get it with goat cheese which I think is better). The staff there was fairly nice, the person who took my order recorded the cookies (I love cookies, but I am trying to stay away from temptations!). My only negative was one of the managers (I think) felt the need to ask me where I lived, which I know is a very LA thing, but in the context of being a person of color in Pasadena, it often comes off as policing rather than casual conversation. Came here with a Yelp Elite member, so I figured it had to be good, right? I had the Peruvian, which was basically a chicken and sweet potato sandwich. The sandwich came with a little salad with a light dressing, topped with a few mandarin oranges. The sandwich itself had chicken that was mildly, definitely not overly, spiced, which was in-between two slices of tasty pita bread that fell apart as I was eating it. I was a little disappointed by the fantastic looking cane sugar sodas, which sounded better than they were (not that it was bad...just maybe not as good as I had hoped). I notice that many people here mention the price. I didn't find it to be ridiculously expensive...maybe kind of expensive, along the lines of a Panera Bread or Corner Bakery. I don't live in Pasadena, but if I did, this would probably be one of those places I'd hit up fairly often, just because it's an easy place to get food, with relatively convenient parking and a lot of food options. read more

Four minus. They have a pretty good menu of sandwiches, bowls, and salads. The food tastes fresh and comes out very quickly, plus there's a free cookie with check-in. They also have a nice soda and lemonade selection. Prices are pretty fair for the area. The downside is that they use the exact same bread for everything: sandwiches, side, kids menu (pizza and grilled cheese). It's not a particularly great bread, either -- a doughy focaccia. Also, their version of banh mi was disappointing and didn't even come remotely close to the flavor of banh mi. It was just doughy bread with sriracha mayo, red onion, and some cilantro and chicken breasts. It would be better off with regular mayo/aioli and pickled carrots/radish and a jalapeno or two. Tried urbane tonight for the first time and it was good. I wanted something light for dinner and this hit the spot. I ordered the turkey club sandwich which comes with a side salad. The sandwhich is nothing fancy but what makes it special is their bread. It so light and delicious it really just makes your sandwich that much better. Little did I know that they bake the bread there so again the bread just added extra flavor and it wasn't overwhelming it was just right. I will definitely go back to try something else on the menu. She asked her manager, he said it's made from harissa paste. Okay, I'll order something else and google harissa while eating my lunch. I order the cilantro chicken salad. The menu says, "cilantro marinated chicken." Sounds great. What I get is a bowl of greens with ice cold, processed, sliced chicken that tastes like lunch meat. It is unappetizing and not good at all. I also ordered a cup of the kale sweet potato soup. It sounded great. It was not freshly made, but tasted like it came out of a Progresso soup can. But, something about the bread they use on their sandwiches is so addictive. It is super fluffy, yet still has a nice "chew" to it. My favorite is the Santa Maria BBQ sandwich, but preferably without the bacon. The sandwiches are the right size for one person and also come with a small side salad to get *some* of your daily veggies in. Urbane Cafe comes close to what I'd call a perfect sandwich, and it's nice that they also give a side salad to go along with it. 4.5 Urbane Cafe uses focaccia bread, giving this sandwich a more airy feeling with more seasoning for taste, and this is good for their SoCal chicken sandwich that consists of chicken, avocado, salsa, pepper jack lettuce, and a chipotle aioli. The focaccia does a great job at making those dense ingredients lighter, giving an earthy balance to the many thing going on in the sandwich. The flavor of the salsa is lost to me, but its acidity helps highlight the chicken that's finished with a small kick from the cheese and aioli; the lettuce and avocado chimes in with sweetness after the savory hits; with the lettuce only providing the crunch and that makes me miss bacon at that point. The salad is semi-fresh, tossed heavily in vinaigrette but gives the much needed contrast to this sandwich, but it's not too crunchy but it's not wilted either. But the cookie. It melts in your mouth. The white chocolate cookie is what it says to be, but it's not oversweetened due to the zing of lemon flavor it has. Wife orders the bbq chicken salad. Both are quite good. They make their own focaccia bread which makes a huge difference. A must get is the watermelon mint lemonade...really liked the flavor. I've been here a couple times for take out and it's a solid new restaurant for lunch or dinner. The first time I had the turkey cranberry brie sandwich. It was really good, definitely ooey and goey from the cheese and aioli so if you don't like sauce, get the aioli on the side. It also came with a tiny side salad. On my most recent trip, I had a lemon cookie and chicken mediterranean 5 grain bowl. The cookie was warm a fresh, a must try and great way to end a meal. The grain bowl was also hearty. I loved how it had a little of everything (arugula, pickled beets, spiced chicken, avocado, beans, etc.). The place was also spotless and service was always excellent.
