I enjoy craft beer and the Upstream Brewing Company does a solid job in brewing up some tasty offerings from its on-site brewery. The Upstream Brewing Company in the Old Market has always been a personal favorite and my preferred location to the Upstream out in West O, if only for it being in the much more distinctive Old Market, since the beer and food are for the most part identical. Other things I like? The friendly, knowledgeable bar staff will allow you sample their beers to assist you in making a choice. I prefer Upstream's ales and find their pilseners and lagers to be far less appealing. Jill, the bartender on duty on the Tuesday afternoon that I was there, was exceedingly accommodating since I would normally order their Flagship IPA or Firehouse, but they had several interesting brews available that I'd never had before. The Cask Conditioned Ale was quite nice. Second, the Upstream offers free wi-fi, which is a nice little perk. I didn't have any food this trip since I'd already had lunch, but based on previous experience, the menu full of upscale bar food is generally pretty decent (the pizzas and the smoked gouda & beer soup are standouts), but some of the items seem a bit pricey. I'm not a fan of their steaks. They serve Omaha Steaks (the brand), which are way pricey and, frankly, way overrated. For sure, there are better craft beers to be found across the country, but the Upstream Brewing Company does what it does quite well. I've been here twice and have been remiss in reviewing. First visit was awesome. It was in the December time frame. Dinner, a ribeye served over potatoes and veggies, was very good. That visit was a four star visit, easy. Second visit this June... a different story. The waitress was new. She was very friendly, but didn't hit the mark. She promised water, which I wanted. We didn't get water until much later in the evening when she returned and asked if we needed anything and I said.. get this, "Water". I ordered the salmon special. It was not hot. It wasn't exactly cold, but it was NOT hot. As I worked through it there were portions of it that were more warm than others. Did I send it back? I'm not a big fan of sending food back. It annoys the staff and who knows what they do to it while they are 'fixing" it. But even more to the point, I don't want my mis-cooked meal just heated up in a microwave, or whatever. It should have been right the first time. Now don't get me wrong, it tasted good. But I must also mention it was very expensive. In the end it was a huge waste of money. Oh... and after ordering we received our beers and before we could get a decent sip our meals were brought to the table. 1. I needed more time to relax. 2. If it was really ready that quick then, by golly, my fish should have been HOT... and it was not. I felt rushed. There were huge groups of people seated all around us. We came here for the beer but were starved too so we ordered some food. I got the beer sampler of America Wheat, Capitol Premium Pale Ale, Firehouse Red Ale, and Dayman. I'm not a beer connoisseur but all had good flavors and were quite delicious. My fave was the Dayman, an unfiltered wheat beer. The Red Ale was really good too, though. For the appetizer we got the Bavarian Pretzel Bites. Large pieces of salted dough with smoked gouda red lager mustard dip. It was pretty average. Typical of what you'd find at any American bar. I got the Alfredo Pizza for my meal. The crust was uber crispy and actually quite good. However, it was definitely not a brick oven cooked pizza. The Alfredo was good but nothing where I have to try it again. My dining companion got the Pork Tenderloin Sandwich. It was a classic, standard, heavy fare which I've come accustomed to in the Midwest. Good, not great. Nothing set it apart from other pork tenderloins I've had. For dessert we went with the Bread Pudding. Seriously, I can't say no to bread pudding. It had a good mixture of slightly crisp exterior and moist interior. It was probably the best part of the entire meal. Overall, I would go back here but it'd stick to drinking the beer next time. read more

Pass on this place! We're in town for the weekend and made a reservation for dinner. We had multiple tables and one of the servers was rude, as in rolled her eyes when someone in the group asked her a question. Split checks shouldn't be difficult to figure out, or difficult to distribute. The server was confused about the splits and gave people incorrect checks after she split them. So the service was rude and the food was about the same. I ordered the daily special, red snapper with farrow. The fish wasn't flaky and was actually almost impossible to cut. I would have taken a picture, but it wouldn't have shown up. It was tough and didn't separate at all. The server brought it back to the kitchen. Their second attempt was not much better. The fish was able to be cut, but it was still chewy and had no flavor. The farrow was good, but I wouldn't have ordered $24 farrow. Someone else ordered a pizza and said it tasted bland and was chewy. No one enjoyed their food and we all agreed that the food wasn't worth the rude service. I wouldn't go back and I would warn people against eating here. Rude service and inedible food are not good qualities for a restaurant. read more

This may be surprising to some, but the time has come to update my thoughts and feelings on one of my 'goto' spots. When I first wrote about Upstream I was glazed and thoroughly enjoyed nearly every aspect about this place. Over the past year I have been here countless times. Early, midday, even late night. The main reason is the beer. Specifically Capitol Pale Ale. It is my most liked Omaha offering. There are many other offerings that stand out and Dallas, the Head Brewer, does a great job on the staples. There have been some misses; like Ebenezer (xmas ale) w/ habenero and Sriracha , but I don't usually go for those. Most recently I feel like the management change has affected me the most. TJ, John, Tim and the rest of the staff seem to like what they do. The prices have now been adjusted and the specials reflect what is sure to become the end of many locals' delight. During Happy Hour 3-6pm, the appetizers used to be half off. That's right 50%. Now it has been changed to a mere $3 off. How is that going to sell more? Sure, the pretzel bites @$5.99 are a deal for $2.99, but my favorite Artichoke dip @$9.75 (overpriced, but good) is not worth $6.75. It was at $4.88, but not now. Sometimes you need a good 'loss leader' and now there is none. The beers used to be more affordable, too. $2.75 a pint and $3.50 for a 23oz equaled about 15.9 and 15.2 cents and ounce respectively. Now it is $3 for a pint and $4 for the 23oz which is about 18.7 and 17.4 cents per ounce respectively. Did the beer get magically better? No. It is still good, but it is like gas prices jumping out of control from $2.50/G to $4/G. Does this mean I won't take a road trip? No. Does this mean I won't go cruising? Yes. It is not really fair to equate beer prices to gasoline, but the analogy is not far off. I will be lessening the time and money I spend here to a decidedly shorter duration and less frequency. Overall I am at a loss as to where I am with these guys. There are many other breweries in town and I feel alienated for a bottom line. I know we all need to profit in business, but the new prices and offerings are dismal. Employee prices jumped 25% as well. TL:DR; Good food, beer and staff. I've been here a few times now and have not been disappointed. On top of the usual national and local thirst-quenching brews, the menu has a lot of variety and the food is quite good. My favorite dish here is a schnitzel, made with pork tenderloin medallions with mashed potatoes, gravy, and vegetables. I've also had the beef braised pot roast and the beef Stroganoff. All are very tasty and filling. We've brought guests here and the prices are very reasonable. It's one of our regular spots. read more

Let me start by saying that I've been a fan of Upstream for several years. Their menu is pretty diverse, and they occasionally offer seasonal dishes with delicious fresh vegetables. More importantly, they also offer a variety of freshly brewed beers (often also having seasonable beers as well). Unfortunately, the food quality differs from time to time. I've noticed that when I go there on a busy weekend, the food often lacks that typical Upstream "taste" I've become accustomed to. That being said, 90% of the time I have absolutely no complaints about the food or service at Upstream. I'm a vegetarian, so I will limit this review to the key veggie dishes they have. For an appetizer, I highly recommend the Upstream Favorite Hot Artichoke & Asiago Cheese Dip, but don't be surprised when you gain five pounds the next day! My favorite dish during the spring and summer months is the Grilled Vegetables & Gnocchi, which typically has a lot of fresh squash and asparagus. The Black Bean Veggie Burger is not a bad lunch option here, but make sure to get the mashed potatoes with the mushroom gravy (yeah, it probably has some sort of meat broth in it, but I'll pretend I don't know that). I tend to stay away from the Blonde Pizza because I personally think the sauce is a bit too much on the heavy side. I did have the Grilled Fajitas a couple of weeks ago, and I was not impressed. They were very bland and lacking something, which I can't quite put my finger on. As far as beer goes, I highly recommend the Honey Raspberry Ale, which has a nice, crisp, slightly fruity taste. For those of you who like dark beers, the Firehouse ESB will do the trick. I've never been impressed with the desserts at Upstream, so I tend to stay away from them. Oh, one more FYI: I've found that the food at the downtown location is much better than the food out west. read more

An Old Market standard with a great happy hour. Upstream's in-house beer selection is stellar; my old standby is the Dundee Scotch Ale, but I love trying the rotating brews. The DSA is dark, but smooth. The food is always good. During happy hour, appetizers are half priced, so it's a good time to explore. Most recently, I tried the Boneless Braised Beef Spareribs. Good flavor and tender. The pizza, which is like a flatbread, is yummy, too. And if you're looking for something more, there are a lot of great sandwich options. read more

Upon arrival to our hotel we were starving and had a out 1.5 hours to kill before we had to be at our event. We wanted to have a snack before we went to the event. We went inside and where asked where we wanted to sit. We wanted to sit outside so they said that we could seat ourselves. We did as they said and sat outside. It was cute. Underneath the tree and the weather was good. We all ordered drinks. The drinks kind of took a little while to come out. No big deal. We ordered a few appetizers. We got 2 pizzas- 1 veggie and 1 meat pizza. We also ordered chicken wings. The chicken wings had a tang... Like a Indian flavor to them. Personally, I didn't like the spice on it but the others seemed to enjoy them. The pizzas were good especially the veggie. It was thin and crispy and the toppings were perfect. The meat pizza was ok and also had pepperchinis... Kinda random but wasn't bad- something different. Overall- I wouldn't write home a out the food and I don't think I would go back to have an a actual meal there. It served it's purpose of drinks and appetizers but was left at that. read more

It's so rare to go to a brewery and enjoy all of their beer selections. I went in and got the sampler of all their beers. I thoroughly enjoyed how clean the beer was. Their water source is superb, which always leads to quality beer. It's imperative that brewers have a good water source in order to brew quality beer, and Upstream has that in spades. I have nothing negative to say about any of their beers, but two standouts were the Flagship IPA, and their Double IPA. Both were refreshing, and had a very clean taste. read more

Very blah. Especially compared to the other breweries in town. Kinda feels like a place that may have been cool 10 years ago. The beer is ok, but nothing stood out. The food was solid, wasn't disappointed....but would guess that everything is from a food service company....as opposed to made in house. Service was fine. It is very big, so if you have a large group this place could easily accommodate. Décor is ehhh kinda ok. If your end game is a brewery there are better options in town for sure. The time before this visit, my food was ok, the visit was ok, but this spot which had once felt like every plate mattered, gave the impression they just didn't have to try very hard anymore. On this visit, they weren't particularly busy, but our simple order of food at lunch -salads and sandwiches - still hadn't arrived after 40 minutes. The manager came out when we cancelled our orders and paid for our round of drinks. His rote offer of "what can I do" was disappointing. We are visiting Omaha and found Upstream through friends/ online. We went in the evening and sat outside. We started as a group of six and two more joined us for drinks later for a total of eight people. Our waiter was indifferent; not friendly but not unfriendly. He took our drink orders and left. It took over 20 minutes to get our drinks. 2 beers, a glass of wine, and 3 whiskey mixed drinks. Somewhere between waiting and receiving our drinks our other two guests arrived. They'd already eaten so they only ordered drinks. The rest of us put in our food orders. Sometime after this we finally got our drinks. Everything tasted good, however, the stout beer was warm. I'm not sure if their kegerator was broken or if that's how they serve it but warm beer is not that good. The salads came out first, along with an app. When the food arrived it was dropped off at the table and while the one appetizer was were and there was clearly no room for more plates on that portion of the table, the waiter and waitress completely ignored it, even as the people at the end of the table tried to ask them to take it - they simply walked away. The food was pretty good but nothing I would say was out of this world amazing. Tasty but not overly delicious. Once the food was there our waiter didn't come back to check on us. Several people wanted drink refills and none of us got one. If something had been wrong with the food no one would have been able to bring it up because the staff never came back. We decided to cut the night when the waiter did come back by just collecting our checks and leaving. Overall, while the area was nice and the outdoor seating was great we will not return. So this is a great location in the old market. It was large and had two levels. It also has outdoor seating too, so there is enough for everyone. I ordered the ribeye sight unseen and at the recommendation of the bartender. I wished i had read the menu. It came out covered in a sriracha aioli. WTF... I get it. The new fad is to put sauces on steaks. But if you are serving steaks from your backyard, let you steak do the talking. Don't do anything to it but cook it. If you must? put an herb butter or something like that. NOT SRIRACHA! The bartender offered to take it back, but I don't send food back usually unless there is something foul with it. Ok, still the steak turned out fantastic. The cook on it was great, the parts not affected by the sriracha were awesome! I would go back and give it a second go, because I believe the steak was a great steak. They mascaraed it with the aioli. Are you sensing to skip the aioli here??? They also put it on a bed of vegetables that came from Birds Eye. So again. I am ordering a steak. And yes, it is cheaper than a real steak restaurant. But do not use steamed vegetables. That game is weak. But this all stemmed from me not reading the menu. Never again. The aioli does not discourage me from liking this place. My friend & I split it we both felt the same way. For a $12 burger I at least expect a toasted bun not a cold one from the pantry. This is just a great, bar/restaurant combo. I've never had a bad beer or bad meal there. The menu is varied and everything is pretty tasty. It's big enough that there's rarely ever a long wait for a table. And even if there is, you can generally get a spot near the bar and eat there. read more

We normally come here because it's good food and do not need a reservation although we do wait 30-40 minutes. We stopped in with the kids. We made sure to order their food right away. We waited 40 minutes at least, felt like eternity. My husband and I had our food come out first nothing fancy just fish and chips and salad and soup- my soup was luke warm at best with the bottom of the romaine stalk taking up the bottom of my salad bowl, no kids food. No water refill or ask for more drinks. It was the worst experience we've had. The kitchen was either understaffed or had the wrong people running it. The "manager" stood on the ramp doing nothing to help his obvious understaffed crew. The waitress blamed the kitchen although she was just as bad. Go somewhere else downtown there are so many choices. Save the headache. read more

A friend's rehearsal dinner was held at Upstream, but I wasn't able to make it in time to be at the dinner. Before the wedding, my friends and I decided to have a light lunch at Upstream. By light lunch, we thought we'd order the typical Midwestern meal meant for one but served for three, so we could split this lunch three-ways. When we arrived, we sought out the hostess and asked for a table for three. She sat us at a high-rise table, and I liked the wooden seating. We decided to order the macaroni and cheese. It was topped with scallions and pieces of ham. My friend's boyfriend enjoyed the macaroni and cheese, especially the ham. I thought the use of scallions gave mac n cheese a new level of freshness. The mac n cheese here is not standard macaroni noodles, but rather thick and twisted noodles. The cheese sauce was light, but not thick, and it coated the noodles. The dish doesn't come with any sides (bread and butter or salad), so its meant for one person. Overall, this was not the best macaroni and cheese my friend and I had ever had. But, the two of us are on a quest for the best mac n cheese at breweries and BBQ joints in the Midwest. Upstream wouldn't make the cut, but the dish wasn't bad or very good. Just OK. We were most impressed by the selection of beer, and these are rotating. We ordered beer that came in wine bottles. Our server un-corked the bottle for us. You cannot have these re-corked and take them home with you. However, the wine bottle can easily hydrate two beer-lovers very well. The next day, I came back to Upstream with a friend for a cup of the beer and gouda soup. Now that was a cheesy soup that easily satiated both my friend and I. It came with a packet of crackers, and this soup was thick enough to be a cracker spread. Maybe a chips and queso (beer and gouda cheese soup) appetizer should be in the works! Overall, Upstream is a very family friendly place. It's a great place for a rehearsal dinner or just a beer with friends. To start, we came here with a larger group. Just under 20 people or so. A few people were out of town and we came to give them a taste of the more popular restaurants downtown. A majority of the group ended up ordering either steaks or the raspberry glazed chicken. I started off with the Bavarian pretzels as an appetizer. The bread and cheese were both light, just like an appetizer should be. If you're looking for a small meal beforehand, this isn't going to be filling, but it tastes good! It's also on the cheaper side which is nice! I've served parties before- so I'm giving 4 stars instead of 3... I ordered the raspberry chicken and it was dry. I don't know if it was just over-cooked or left under a heat lamp for too long, but it was a bit tough to eat. I ordered extra raspberry sauce (the sauce when incredible.. had to share it with others at the table) which let me finish the meal, but I was disappointed. Came here with a group of 10 coworkers on a Monday night by recommendation. The bartender at the Double Tree offered us some free drink tickets and we decided to try it out. I ordered the Gold light beer and the Pork Schnitzel, both were unreal. The service was great and the vibe was awesome! Only bad part was a homeless guy outside the entrance harassing our group while we waited for our ride but that is not the breweries fault. A++++++ will recommend to others!!! read more

The service was great and the bartender (sat at the bar) was attentive. I ordered the ribeye with the seasonal vegetables and fried mashed potatoes. The steak was cooked perfectly but I do wish it had a little more salt. This could be personal taste so no big deal. We came here 4th of July and it was one of the only places really open that day! We sat outside in the heat but did get some shade on their patio! It would be a perfect place to grab a late night beer and apps if it were cooler out. Hubby had their wheat beer and really liked it, I had their root beer which was awesome! I'm not a huge soda fan, so was pleasantly surprised! We shared the artichoke and Asiago dip and holy yum! Husband was still talking about it the next day! I like the area that the restaurant is located in. I walked in on Sunday night after the Indy-New England game. The place wasn't busy at all and that was a good thing at least for me because I didn't want to wait long for my meal. I was greeted and seated very quickly. I ordered the ribeye and it came out beautiful. Cooked to a perfect medium rare. I liked the fritters that came with it, they were crispy yet soft on the inside. I don't think I've ever had fritters before so that was a pleasant first time. The sriracha mayo that came on the steak was good also. For 30 dollars it was a great meal. read more

We tried their house made root beer, which I didn't think was very good. The waitress wasn't so friendly, could have been the end of her shift. We ordered the burger, pizza, and fish. The food came out within 10 minutes of ordering, makes you worry how fresh it is. The burger was horrible not inedible just not enjoyable at all. Pizza was ok.
