I went here off suggestion from a friend saying the atmosphere and food was unreal....and I couldn't agree more. Since moving closer to North Jersey and finding that the food in the area has been absolutely lackluster, my expectations were not high. "Oh, just another high priced bougey place with frozen prepared food, I thought"...I couldn't be anymore wrong. Upon entering, you can see the charm and atmospheric aura and the friendly and intelligent wait staff. We were seated almost immediately, and offered to have them check our coats (a nice gesture). Upon reviewing their menu, I can confidently say that every menu item is carefully crafted and truly inspired. Food involves many revolving parts and it is fairly rare to find an affordable establishment be able to hit the nail on the head on literally everything! We started off ordering the Makers Mark Buffalo Wings. I don't think I ever had such amazing wings in my life. Decently meaty wings, not too overly fried tossed in a house made buffalo soft and seemingly placed back on the grill while being glazed with Makers Mark. Unique, and delivers in every possible way. For an entree, I ordered a Burger with Cheddar and a fried egg and my girlfriend ordered the Poke Bowl. The Poke Bowl was actually listed in the shareables section, but our waitress kindly suggested that it could be served as an entree as well and offered a few other suggestions to ensure we understood the whole menu. The Poke Bowl was prepared amazingly, seemingly fresh and I was told nothing in NJ compares to their quality (Poke shops all over NY seem to nail down quality, yet for some reason in NJ it is old and overpriced...not sure why, but it seems to be the general concencous). I'm glad this place breaks that stereotype. The Burger was fantstic. Great blend of beef, cooked amazingly, barely any grease but somehow managed to keep their flavor and juices in (this proves the quality of meat is high). The Bun was perfect and the fried egg on top complimented it fantastically. Highly suggest going here. Amazing food, amazing staff and very reasonable prices. read more

Uproot is a local restaurant, and we would always bring family, friends, and visitors 1-2x a week. I never take the time to complain or write bad reviews, anywhere... but I feel obligated to leave this 2-star review after tonight's experience. We order 1-2 steaks every week, and it's always cooked perfectly - medium rare. Tonight, we were offered a different cut (probably due to rising beef costs, which is understandable), and the first round came well-done. When we showed them, they apologized and said they'd be right back with another. When they returned to deliver the second, the manager said, "Here is your RARE steak, " and indeed it was. We didn't want to complain again because we never do, but they saw we didn't eat it. When they asked how it was, we said we would just take it home to finish cooking. Instead of apologizing, the manager said, "Sorry, the first take was OUR version of medium-rare...," as if he was spiteful. As often as we are here and inviting others to support their business, this couldn't have been more insulting. We even mentioned it was our first time to ever complain, but wanted them to see it for themselves. Something has changed here and not for the better... We paid for the full meal and still tipped 20% (usually +30% because we love the service team!), considering this was not the waitress' fault, but we are incredibly disappointed with their management, lack of ownership, and overall customer service. We understand the pressures of the restaurant business ourselves, but this was unacceptable, and we can no longer justify supporting the business or recommend this place to anyone. read more

We live around the corner. The staff are super friendly. The drinks are creative while being nice and strong. Even their well liquors are tasty. The food is very much tapas-style and is a eclectic mix of gastropub options like pork belly in ways that change seasonally. Even the vegetarian options, such as buffalo cauliflower are delicious. They are on point with flavor combinations. For examples, their wings have a coffee and/or vanilla flavor added to the sauce and they do things like pair broccoli rabe with buratta and Italian meats. In a single meal, we literally had cuisine from all major regions of the world. Very impressed by this place. They must treat their staff great because I've never had an interaction where they seemed at all downtrodden or overworked. Good on this place. We had a wonderful dinner here recently with another couple. Don't let the fact that this restaurant is in a strip mall fool you. This place is beautiful inside, with great atmosphere... it had a hip and trendy vibe to it. The food was amazing and service impeccable. We could not have asked for a friendlier waiter...he was extremely personable and attentive to our table the entire night. I started my evening with a winter sangria which was light, refreshing, and oh so delicious. Regarding the food, we started with 2 appetizers: the roasted Brussels sprouts and the crispy kabocha squash... both outstanding and I'd get them again. My entree was the shrimp fried rice which was fabulous. Everyone really liked their meals. For dessert, we tried their homemade doughnuts accompanied by salted caramel pot de creme for dunking -- OMG, amazing! You get 3 doughnuts, so there is plenty for sharing. This is a place that has fantastic potential but falls short on plating and coordination between servers. The skirt steak I ordered was hiding underneath a pile of onion rings and some salad that had a little too much dressing on top. Beyond that, the skirt steak was excellent as well as the accompanying carrot purée and onion rings. The cocktails were also excellent- my recommendation being the signature Manhattan. The craft beer selection was also significantly above par with a strong variety covering all your core types of beer. Beyond that, the service was either multiple people helping simultaneously or there was none to be found. Ultimately an amazing meal that simply needs the finer points to be ironed out. read more

We had a group for a special occasion dinner and totally enjoyed our whole experience..the wait staff was very efficient and friendly..the food is so unique and well prepared. I was told they refuse to use anything but fresh ingredients never frozen and you can definitely tell. My Ricotta Cavatelli pasta dish with asparagus and leek lemon flavor was excellent..very tender light pasta was used..I had no room for desert until I saw the warm freshly cooked cinnamon sugar donuts with mocha pot cream and Carmel dip come to the table..I was glad I had room for them and recommend them as a must..cant wait till my next visit.. read more

The worst service I've had in years. I sat at the bar with my boyfriend and we ordered 2 appetizers and split a chicken sandwich. The bread came out quickly but the arracini seemed to have gotten lost taking almost 30 minutes to come out. After watching others get theirs we asked where ours was and we're told it'll be out soon. They showed up and then we waited 35 minutes for a chicken sandwich. I again asked if our chicken sandwich was coming since people that ordered well after us were getting their food including their chicken sandwiches. All while their bartenders were busy doing shots with patrons. (guess it pays to be a regular) After 20 more minutes ours finally arrived and it wasn't worth the nearly hour wait for a sandwich. I am disgusted with my treatment here and will never be coming back. If you aren't a snob, or a regular don't bother coming as you will barely get acknowledged. read more

I want to give a four star review but I can't mainly because one of the bathrooms was really disgusting! Pee in the bowl, paper towels on the floor, a wet paper towel stuck to the wall, dirt on the sink, and small mirrors. I know not everyplace can maintain the bathrooms constantly but it was just a huge turn off considering it was a nice place. they had to unisex bathrooms so maybe I should've used the other one but I just couldn't LOL. A popular place in town but the food is just ok to poor. The menu never changes which is another down side. Service is extremely bad and servers are pretty dumb and not knowledgeable. I would even say some are slow. If I was the manager I would observe what they are doing. Don't sit in the back of the restaurant because that is where they put the Jr. staff. We went there two weeks ago for Date night and this restaurant is one of the best I have tried near my house.. We were greeted and seated right away.. Our waiter was very nice. We ordered for appetizer Chicken liver Pate, Buffalo cauliflower & bun mi fried bun. We also ordered goat cheese and bacon pizza.. First arrived-- Chicken liver Pate. This was too good.. I do want to comment on crostini here which is one of the best I had so far.. Just by this appetizer-- I knew my food night is going to be great.. second arrived-- pork buns-- I had them many many times but again these lightly fried steamed buns were some of the best I had so far.. and I had them in many high end restaurants.. third-- buffalo cauliflower-- this lightly fried cauliflower dish surprised me most bc I didn't have much hopes for it bc as Indian -- I had gobhi Manchurian ( Indian fried cauliflower dish) multiple times and my husband was surprised that I ordered it BUT let me tell you-- this dish with simple subtle taste for my Indian palate was exceptional.. For me-- best dish of the night.. Blue cheese with fresh chives-- too good... Lastly our pizza came and it was good not great but other three dishes were so impressive- I will let it slide.. I need to stop ordering pizza in these American food restaurants.. I was so full but I really wanted desert & looking at their menu-- I knew it will be great but hubby had his hands up.. Here is my updated review. I went back for my 3rd visit because the NY Times gave this place 4 stars. So I said "what are we not seeing? let's try it one more time, so we can put it to rest". Another Friday night. Empty bar area. Lovely jazz trio playing. First round of drinks in the lounge, terrific. Great artisanal cocktails. The food was good, not as good as last time, but still good. Here's why they won't make it (& I wish they would). 1.The high school girl/hostess who greeted us at the door was wearing flip flops, and kept bothering our husbands to check their sport jackets. Duh. It's October, men wear sport jackets out to dinner, no need to check them. Very unprofessional for a 4 star restaurant. There are good restaurant industry people that need jobs right now, how about hiring an adult woman to greet the 40 plus dining crowd. 2. Second round of drinks were totally wrong. Dirty martinis, instead of cucumber cocktails. Lipstick on the glasses. Sent them back, but did not stay for our 2nd round of drinks. 3. Weird remote location. Not seen from a road, or a downtown area. No walk in traffic and hard to find. If the owner is reading this, I think he should open a place in Millburn or Red Bank. There is a place for rent on Main St. in Millburn, visible and always happenin' w/ foot traffic and car traffic and the people there appreciate the kind of cuisne that he is trying to present. His food is innovative and everything we have tried we have really enjoyed. I think his target audience in the surrounding area of Warren is not looking for this kind of food, sadly. read more

The bar scene is Warren, NJ is abysmal -- it's an icey, closed off town populated with rude, close-minded old people that have more in common with Long Island that the Manhattan night life they think they are a part of. There's no sense of community either; Uproot can be found in the closest thing resembling a "town square" -- and it's surrounded by Starbucks and Musclemaker Grills that all close at 9pm. So it's damning with faint praise when I say ... Uproot is the hippest cocktail experience in town. If you're under the age of 40 and are looking for somewhere to drink -- and you don't want to go to Houlihans or some dive sports bar populated with gruff townies who look at you funny, if you want to go a bar that has atmosphere and youthful energy -- Uproot is your only option. With that being said: drinks are good and the service is friendly. The decor is trendy. But go there for cocktails, don't go there to eat. It's overpriced, gourmet diner food (and it's not even mind-blowingly delicious diner food). You want to dress nice when you're going there, and they go out of there way to make it feel upscale... but then they offer buffalo chicken pizza as a dinner item? It just feels laughably phony; for all its pretence and its live jazz and mood lighting, they still offer the same dining experience as a TGI Fridays. It's just an excuse to act "trendy" and not actually be trendy. So go there for an after-dinner drink and that's it. read more

Note they are closed Sundays. Uproot is in an odd location, isolated in the middle of the A&P plaza (intersection of Warrenville Road and Mountain Boulevard). Look for the Chase Bank, its behind it. The best I can describe the interior is upscale classy modern. Its kept very clean. There's a bar area, which has high tables you can sit at. There is a separate restaurant area as well. The staff has always been fantastic, especially the bar staff. There were 3 different types of tacos on the menu, and for each you can order 2 or 3. The fish tacos were recommended to me, and they were outstanding! Happy hour is Monday-Friday from 3-7. There's a special happy hour menu for food and drinks. Can't beat $4 glasses of wine! Some nights they have specials. Mondays are discounted wine nights, and Thursdays are Taco and Tequila nights - $3 tacos and $7 patron margaritas. Its one of my new favorite places in the Warren area. read more

Came here on a Friday night after making a reservation. I was greeted and sat promptly. Our server Oleh was awesome! He was friendly and helpful with all my questions. We started with the wings, the flavor lived up to the great reviews and I'll definitely order them again! For entrees we had the pork chop and salmon dish. Side of mashed potatoes. Everything was delicious. These aren't at all your typical flavors and it's appreciated. We picked Uproot since it was somewhat central to our location, and I had been meaning to try this restaurant for some time. The restaurant was not very busy. They have a great bar, (that is the only positive part of this review). Things went downhill as we went to our table. The service all evening was painfully slow. Per the menu "if you want bread, you need to request it from your server". We did and about 20 minutes after our request we got it (after asking three times). We waited way too long for our main courses (we got an apology from our waiter). Things seemed disorginized and uneven all evening. When we got our food we found it average at best. My pasta was too salty. Great menu, but the food did not follow. read more

Ordered tuna duo for app-delicious! The squash soup left a lot to be desired, sadly I prefer panera's squash soup. The mussels were good. For drinks had 2 hibiscus lemonades..yummy! Husband ordered southern american to drink and he loved it..spicy but good! For entree we had Barbacoa tacos, which I found to be too fatty so left about 1/4 untouched. Had the donuts with the cream and salted caramel sauce..yum but three is too many even for two people. Overall I give it 7 out of 10. I would come here again! read more

In all fairness, I'll just review the bar portion as a friend and I had just stopped in for a quick drink one night. One beer and one glass of wine: $20. Any peanuts or appetizers on that bar for the $20? No. Staff and service? Friendly and attentive. If I get brave enough to visit and try some of the "outre" dishes on the menu, I'll be back to re-review. I can't help but think that this is just another one of those restaurants that tries to create this buzz and idea that because of their exorbitant prices and avant-garde menu that you would be un-hip to not like it. And any restaurant that tries that approach in this economy? I wish them well. Throw some nuts on the bar. Over priced,left hungry,desert saved the night! Celebrated a birthday on a weeknight for 5 of us.We had the salmon,skirt steak,duck,chicken! The portions are small and the prices high.The entrees were tasty but not worth the price.We had a couple of apps which were also tiny but tasty.Drinks were good.We had the donuts for desert(3 fried huge with salted caramel dip on the side) with out this I would of really of had to go out for a second dinner! Service was horrible,15 minutes for our drinks to arrive,no chilled glass with the bottle beer(had to ask,another 5 minute wait)side salad came with the dinner not beforehand.Its warren so it fits in with the pricing...Nice atmosphere,just dont go hungry read more

So happy I came across this place on Yelp. My boyfriend and I came here for dinner and it did not disappoint. We got the wings to start, followed by our entrees and desserts. Everything was great. The sauce we chose for the wings was the vanilla bean buffalo sauce and it was amazing. It was sweet, yet still had the familiar buffalo heat. The wings were also crispy, which I appreciate. For entre, I got the strip steaks and boyfriend got the fried rice. His portion was huge, while my portion was decent. Flavor was great in both dishes though. For dessert we got the famous donuts as well as the chocolate cake. Both didn't disappoint. The chocolate cake was rich and decadent, you definitely needed to chase it with the accompanied strawberry milk. The donuts were fluffy, and reminded me of a donut version of a churro. Reason for writing this is to give everyone fair warning , I stopped here with friends last night around 10pm . We each had 2 drinks which were great just hanging out Bsing . We left around 11 pulled out of parking lot and Boom cop pulls up right behind me . I was not drunk in the least and saw him pull out of the parking lot to follow me .
