I had an appointment today at their Brooklyn location (81 Seventh Ave) and received a disturbing call from a Vetco rep at +1 (646) 337-8183. They told me to hurry even though I was still an hour away and warned that if I arrived on time, they wouldn't see my dog because they wanted to close early. This was supposed to be a comprehensive visit including blood work, something that requires careful, unrushed handling. Rushing a blood draw can seriously harm an animal if done improperly. Yet here, they pressured me to rush or risk not being seen. I was shocked by their unprofessionalism and blatant disregard for quality care. The expensive fees for a rushed appointment? No thanks. This would have been my dog's first visit, and thankfully I canceled. Unleashed by Vetco? Well, Vetco better put them on a leash because the unhinged staff running this place clearly don't care about pets or their owners. I'll be taking my dog elsewhere. read more

I just had the worst experience at the Vetco clinic--the doctors were lovely but the person checking people in was awful. I had a 6:00 pm appointment and when I got there, I looked around to find the vet station, which constantly changes at this location. Today, it was by the dog training section. I asked an employee stocking shelves where we should wait if we have a vet appointment since there was no one in scrubs around. She directed to me a line by the register. We waited there for 40 minutes and then once we finally got to the front we were told really rudely that we needed to check in. I said no one had told us. She said I should have known to check in when Petco texted me, but they never did. I received a text to complete my pet intake form, which I did, but never a text to check in. That is not my fault but she acted like it was. All I did was walk in, ask staff what to do, and listen. Not my fault I was given incorrect info, but she made me wait in the long line again. I got there before 6 and left at 7:40. I think it's crazy I was made to wait in line again as punishment for something that wasn't my fault. I think I should have been able to resume my spot after my 40 minute wait + additional 20 minutes waiting to check in. Instead, I was forced to wait another ~30 minutes in line again. I have no idea why I was treated with such disdain. read more

This place used to be our go to for live crickets for our pet leopard gecko. They now have a major issue with supply. I called Tues and they said they are getting a delivery of crickets Fri. Fri comes and ooops, there is no delivery of crickets. They have none. Very frustrating. My is surviving on mealworm until I can go to Sunset Park's Petco for some :( read more

This store is always decently organized and staff is always friendly. They aren't always knowledgeable about the products but that's okay. I also come here for Vetco which is pretty good. However for some reason the assistant that checks is in is always super bossy. Twice I was told I needed the rabies and both times I explained my pup already received it and was dismissed. Also when I wanted to double check what I needed the girl checking me in was really rude overall. I'm pretty sure the weight of my dog was also not accurate because I just went to an actual clinic recently and my pups weight was different. Both times the vet said I didn't need to get rabies again, so I don't know why the girl made a big fuss about it. She could have just suggested it but not tell me I'm wrong. Asking me to give my dog rabies vaccine twice is just irresponsible. If the government demands it of course I'll get it again, but I don't think it's right to do that to an owner. Besides that the Veterinarians and vet technicians were wonderful and I recommend for vaccines unless your dog has allergies or you know they need special care. read more

I especially love the Vetco, James Melendez was extra helpful and answered all my questions. He wasn't rushed as I've experienced in other places. I recommend highly. Unleash which is affiliated with Petco was a pleasure to go with my dog Zev. Basically we went there to get some supplements and dog food for Zev. Zev had an awesome time walking around checking out the friendly environment. My hubby is member so we got a little discount which is helpful durning these stressful times. We had an an exceptionally great training experience at Unleashed Petco with Joe during Puppy level 1 classes. He truly goes above and beyond. You can tell that he truly cares about each dog he trains, and was great at teaching us new dog parents too. I know Louie learned a lot from him, but I did too. One of the unique parts about Joe's training, which I loved (and I don't think I realized was so unique until recently), is that he focused only on positive training and rewarding the good behavior. I found myself constantly reminded about the way a dog might think about a situation. Joe was patient when answering all of my questions during the time we had together - and trust me, I had A LOT. The classes have helped us so much through our first 4 months together, and still to this day. Today I'm so proud of my Louie - he truly is the best dog - so well trained. A friend and I were walking in Tompkins Square park once when he asked me what the point of having a dog was. He wondered why anyone would want these gross, panting, needy gremlins waking us up early and interrupting us when we bring a date home--demanding things all the time. Puppy obedience class was a huge miss. It took a long time to get started, there was one other pup, a chihuahua, and it was shaking at the look of my husky pup. The trainer was rather weird, too, and did not check for vaccines before the class started. We left early and canceled the rest of the sessions. I'd skip it. read more

How can I start? I am so AMAZED by Joe's training skills. I truly believe he is more than a dog whisperer; he is a MAGICIAN!!! Joe has that ability to connect with animals; he made our Frenchie feel so comfortable from the beginning and knew exactly what to do and how to do it. It was only the beginning of the session and I was already amazed by his skills. I could tell that the session was gonna go really well and that it was going to be success. And how right I was; our goals were more than accomplished. Joe really CARES; I have no words. He is so passionate about what he does. We had THE BEST EXPERIENCE. Kudos to Joe! I cannot think of anyone else training our Frenchie. He was also super helpful helping me deciding on a few things I wanted to get at the store. As much as I love animals, I think it's terrible they have the adoption centers in the front of the store. My Mom is severely allergic to cats and most dogs. I visited the Park Slope store on Sunday 2/28 with my new rescue pup Toby. Toby is still adjusting to city life, has had a rough couple of months, but he's slowly acclimating to his new home. I was visiting Petco to buy him a crate and some treats. I was assisted by the manager Jason and was was immediately impressed with his level of service. Jason spent close to an hour with me and Toby in between other customers, taking the time to comfort Toby and teach him some behaviors like sit, down, stay, leave it. In just a short amount of time, I was in awe with the impact Jason had on Toby, and how much he was able to teach him (and me). It was such a surprising and positive experience and will very happily shop there with Toby from now on. I cannot thank Jason and his team enough! read more

The only reason why I'm giving a poor rating is simply customer service. I myself am a store manager in retail and the service here was just pitiful. Assuming that Connor is the store manager due to the different clothing, my advice to him is that a little goes a long way. For 1, no one in the store greeted me or acknowledged that I was there, mind you it was slow at the time and there were at least Connor and 2 associates, one on her phone. Connor rang me up, asked if I had a number for an account but did not ask me if I'd like to enroll since I did not. Gave me my change and did not say "thank you" or any kind. I just moved to this area and this is the closest Petco to my apartment, so it's this one or drive 20+ minutes to get a tube of the fresh pet food for my Shuggie that barely lasts a week. I'm a rewards member and I've been to MANY petco/unleashed by petco stores but this is by far the worst. The employees are RUDE to say the last. I have never been welcomed OR thanked for my patronage. Which is completely ABSURD. It makes me pose the question of "is it my skin tone?" Pet store is your typical big box pet store. I am giving them a 1 start because they no longer offer viable options for customers to carry out their items. When asked for something to carry items with, the cashier told me that the store had stopped providing bags and was only able to offer a tiny broken cardboard box that would not carry the items I needed. It's great that they are trying to be environmentally friendly, but it is not possible to carry several items from the store to home without at least something to carry your items with. They don't even sell reusable bags for a fee as an alternative, which I would have bought if available. read more

Took my dog in to get a new name tag but they ended up being really expensive, the toys and rawhide treats are also expensive- especially if you compare unleashed's rawhide/bully sticks with local pet stores. I thought the staff would be more friendly and approach me to see if I needed anything but that didn't really happen, the store was almost empty but they were just kind of doing their own thing. I ended up approaching a staff member and did get some good and knowledgeable advice about changing food so that was nice. I live in Crown Heights and took my dog up there because I thought he'd have a fun time and get some attention, possibly a treat sample, but it was a pretty stale environment and none of that really happened. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE AT VETCO. after being checked in my children, pup and i walked over the VETCO inside of PETCO. KRISTI made eye contact, and offered no greeting other than "I'll take Niko (our pup)". We handed over the dog, and got him right back in under a minute, and were dismissed with a checkout slip. I asked about the complimentary nail clipping included with vital care, only to be met with a blank stare and rudeness from KRISTI the vet assistant. "We don't do that here, You would need to take him to a Vetco that does that". When I commented on how bothered she seemed by my question, which may have been obvious to her but unknown to me as a new puppy parent and customer, she excused herself stating, "I had a long day". No apology, just justification. The Attending Veterinarian, Dr. James Melendez was equally rude and dismissive. Not one bit of information was given during my visit. No care directions for my pup, No next steps, no invitation for questions... just a slip to checkout, blank stares and nastiness. The service received today is definitely noted as the worst service in any industry that I've received to date. Vetco is advertised as an inexpensive alternative to a traditional Veterinarian office, and the service received matched that. Non-service minded express Vets who lack passion or enjoyment in what they do. That was more than apparent today. When I complained with the gentleman who checked me in he shared that Vetco and Petco are separate and you never know what you're going to get with the team scheduled. He implied that sometimes they are good and sometimes they are not. I left enraged, confused, dissatisfied and with unanswered questions. The worst part is the doctor left me negative feedback in the notes on my pets record, saying that I was verbally abusive, which is untrue, and noted my puppy was matted. I've had my puppy over two months and he's not been able to go to the groomers as we wait for his shots. If the doctor would've cared enough to understand, or engage in conversation about his care, he would have known that, rather than being passive-aggressive on medical records. Truly disappointing for a new puppy parent and a new customer and patient of Petco and Vetco. read more

We can't stop talking about how wonderful our experience has been working with Joe in puppy levels 1 and 2. As a former teacher, I feel he is one of the best teachers I've had: approachable, honest, constructive, a good listener, and amazingly clear in his instructions. He has a knack for making complex things seem simple, and lending the simplest things meaning. Watching him demonstrate a lesson was a masterclass in how to explain something so others can both remember and reproduce it well after leaving the class. And our puppy was drawn to him - she responded to him with full attention, and was comfortable in his presence as she rarely is in the presence of strangers. She grasped new tasks almost instantly when he introduced them to her. More than that, just a few minutes with him was enough to build a foundation - once we were able to reproduce the same moves, it incredibly easy for us to continue building those muscles with her at home. Joe helped us navigate through some of our toughest weeks of puppy ownership. Although good at training exercises in the home, our puppy was all over the place on her leash, leaping and lunging and going in every direction. Joe listened to us patiently and carefully; he helped us get equipment that was actually suited for the job, modify our own behavior to build consistency and confidence, and develop quick strategies for high-distraction, dangerous situations. We read many books, watched many videos, and spoke to many people about teaching dogs to walk on a loose leash, but Joe's lessons were the ones that stuck - the ones that made the most intuitive sense and that *worked*. I can't emphasize enough how helpfully *clear* he was - he guided us to see our own behaviors in a new light, and that in turn helped us understand our puppy. As for our puppy? She can be shy and reserved with strangers, but she adores Joe, who let her approach him on her own terms and has always been incredibly gentle and sweet with her. Now, she wants to check in on him any time we pass Petco, and gets disappointed when she doesn't see him in the training area! read more

Unleashed feels very Mom and Pop-ish; the staff is very helpful, friendly and they know their stuff. They have a great selection of products and toys and the treat samples are awesome. I bring my husky here all the time and he absolutely loves it. He knows exactly where it is, and once we're a street away he will do his best to drag me there at top speed. read more

Unleashed is terrific. They always have something that I didn't know my dog "needs". This is a perfect place to stop after off-leash hours in Prospect Park. The only downside to Unleashed is that other people know how great it is. If you don't get there right when it opens or at an odd hour, there will be at least a few people with ill-mannered pets. The employees and managers are really helpful; they truly seem to like their jobs. The bulk bin treats are a great buy.
