Breakfast sandwich

Came here for brunch on Sunday. Yes it is packed because of the drag show. Their menu was hardly readable. So I looked on my phone. I got the breakfasts sandwich and a mimosa. Overall I really liked the food and the show. I just wish we were better seated on the left side of the restaurant. We only got glimpses of the drag queens. Thanks!

Another visit to Union! I went with my mama for a Sunday lunch, and we tried all the fried things. No drinks for us, but we had calamari, cheese curds, and a couple of other things. This review update is really for the calamari because they may be my favorite I've had recently! They are in chunks and seem more meat-y and substantial than when you have a ton of tentacles covered in batter. I would go back just for the calamari.

Stopped in for lunch during the week and it was nice to not have to fight any crowds. I came in with a coworker and we were hoping to hop onto a call and have lunch at the same time. The two people working were so sweet to us and helped us find a table that would be closest to the WiFi router for a better connection - thank you! I had a sensitive stomach and decided to order a sandwich and a side salad. The sandwich was pretty greasy and/or had a lot of sauce on it - maybe some people like a wet sammy, but it really wasn't for me. I did take a few bites and it was pretty good despite the grease/wetness. I also asked for no cheese and it came with cheese :/ The side salad was exactly what I was looking for. I'd be interested in checking this place out again in the future, maybe on a weekend night when it gets busier! Seems like a fun place and again, the people that work there were super great to us.

Union is always a good time! We were able to be seated outside and the Covid precautions were relatively good. They have good drink prices pretty much any time of day and day in general. I don't usually order food here, but it was good. Your average bar food. Come here if you are looking for a good time with decently priced drinks in the heart of Short North!

Came here for the Drag Race finale with some friends. It was my first time but it won't be my last! They have an extensive drink list and well thought out food menu. I ordered the grilled chicken quesadilla and a couple cocktails. The drinks take a little longer to get because they're so busy but the wait is worth it. Our server Nick did an amazing job as well.

We came to Union Cafe on a Wednesday which they had a steak special! The steak was cooked well, and the fries were so good and crispy. I loved the caramelized onions that were on top of the steak which is how my dad makes his too so it was nostalgic. There was a lot of food for the price and we got one drink and a friend told us they are a heavy pourer and he was right. Their drinks were SO strong but more bang for your buck I guess. The environment was nice, music and everyone enjoying themselves! We sat outside and it was comfortable! The server was nice and attentive to us and came by often to make sure we were doing okay.

Ask the Community - Union Cafe

Are they still open and does anyone have contact info? I've been trying to call and email to make a reservation for drag brunch but the number listed here in Yelp goes straight to a "voicemail box that hasn't been set up"

They should still be open for business. I was there in September after they did a remodel. Try calling during their open hours but before it gets busy.

Do they have drink specials on wednesday?

We do! Wednesdays we have $4 Mic Ultra Drafts, $5 Blue Moon Drafts and $5.50 Smirnoff Cocktails.

At night is it 18+ or 21+?

21+!!!

The crowd was packed and everyone seemed to be in good spirits. A few people had on costumes, so I'll definitely come dressed next year. After the show the dance floor opened back up and kept the mood high. Their drinks are also potent and wallet friendly, a win.

I stumble when sober due to dysautonomia and a few other health problems that I don't feel necessary to tell strangers. I was not using my mobility aid and was in platforms, so I wasn't clearly disabled, but I shouldn't need to "look" disabled for them to let me in. Explaining should have been enough. On my good days, I don't need a mobility aid, but I do still struggle to walk here and there. He wouldn't tell me why I wasn't allowed in, just that I wasn't. I can only assume it's because I am hard of hearing and stumbled a bit, or because of the way I look maybe. I guess next time I come in I will have to use my mobility aid so that their bouncer doesn't automatically assume I am incompetent drunk. It was a hard night, I had just been done crying, and then I got looked up and down and rejected when I got to the one place I thought I might be safe for the night. I feel left out of my own community just because of my health conditions, but this place is only "inclusive," if you're a certain type of person. If you have health problems that make sobriety tests a challenge, I recommend trying somewhere more likely to hear you out. He truly just blew off everything I said, it was in one ear and out the other. Wouldn't even talk to me. I get it: you can't over-serve. You don't want to get sued. The issue is, I WAS NOT a stumbling drunk, I AM DISABLED. I really hope I'm allowed in at some point, I think I'll just have to get lucky with whether or not the bouncer is an ableist. Most nights it's fine, but It's just wild that our justice system full of pigs is more likely to listen to you when you say you struggle with balance due to health reasons than an "inclusive" night club.

Talk about a switch from the surrounding bars and its so refreshing. Walking into this bar made me…read morefeel like I was back in my hometown and going into a bar full of the locals. This bar has a small town dive bar feel and its the best! I love a nice clean bar that gets fancy with the drinks but something about a bar that smells like cigarettes, alcohol, and like hadn't been cleaned in years just hits different. Everyone I met inside was super friendly and everything was priced very well! This bar only accepts cash and Venmo when I had went in. I only had beer since we weren't going to be very long. But from the mixed drinks that my friends had ordered they said they were strong. Cant go wrong with a strong drink but its not for everyone. When it comes to seating during these wild times of socially distancing they still had a good amount of seating inside at the bar and tables around the inside as well. Also, if you keep going further back in the bar you will find that they have a huge patio/outside area will tons of extra space and seating as well. Which makes it that much better! For a first time experience its a great place and a fun switch up from all the other bars that reside in the short north area. Just make sure you carry some cash on you or have the venmo app downloaded to use. Other than that I would recommend this place to anyone looking for something different to go to and try.

Little did I know, when I finally checked out their website, they have a TON of Philly cheesesteaks! I love a good Philly, so I knew I had to give it a try. Our service was pretty slow, but honestly, that's kind of on par with a bar, so I wasn't too surprised. Still, this could be worked on. We were on the patio and our server admitted he didn't know who was helping us. It turned out to be him - but after 15 minutes of waiting lol. The space is super cool and really unique. It has a fun atmosphere that makes it feel like more than just your typical neighborhood bar. The food was great! They have lots of different ways to build your own Philly, which I loved. There were also a bunch of different sauces to choose from, and I especially enjoyed getting to try those. The fries were thin, crispy, and came with a CRAP ton. They were really good and definitely not skimpy on the portion! Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by Flatiron Tavern. Definitely not just a bar with bar food like I originally thought. I'll be back for another Philly!
