I hate paper and plastic cups when I go to a bar, but at least these were festive.

We just moved in around the corner and so we came here for July 4th. The bartender was nice, our glasses were rarely empty without asking for a refill. We sat at the bar but kept seeing the majority of people going through the back door. I had been here once before years ago but it was just a back patio that all the smokers were back to. So we stayed upfront. It got quite busy and we kept seeing more and more people going back there. I went to go to the bathroom but there was a line. One of the staff said, "Hey guys there are more bathrooms outside in 'the barracks'". I didn't know what that meant but I went. The back has CHANGED dramatically since I saw it last. It was now another bar, tons of uni-sex bathrooms, and even a dance floor with a DJ booth. It looked fun but wasn't the vibe I was in at the time so I went back upfront. We had a good time and the bartender that came in later, a young female with short red hair, was super friendly and we adored her. We will be back.

Inside bar. Clean and nice. No smoking thankfully inside. But there is an outside deck you can smoke on.

It's awesome here. The bartenders are so nice and friendly. Try a couple mixed drinks and you have a great time here.

My parents used to joke that when I turned 21 they were going to drop me off at one end of Parsons Avenue and pick me up in the morning at the other end. Hopefully, if I had been in Columbus for my 21st, I would have ended up at AWOL. I came here with a friend to Pre-Red, White, and Boom and had a great time! Their happy hour deals are amazing with me getting 2 gin and tonics for $6. And that's with the tip. Cheap booze makes me very happy! And cheap booze that wasn't watered down makes me even happier! The bar staff was friendly and even though I stood out like a sore thumb as the token straight at a gay bar, they didn't give me TOO hard a time about it =) I never would have guessed it, but they have an amazing patio out back! There were about 3 people inside but when we walked out the back, a crowd of about 30 were enjoying the warm weather with their own waterfall and a cabana bar of their own. I can definitely see many more happy hours spent here!

Completely underwhelming. Waited for 7 minutes at a near empty bar. Bartender started serving people who arrived after me so I got up and left. The bathrooms do not even close without a hook latch. Better bars in the area.

Our favor club in Columbus. The club is great in size and friendliness. Once you go there, it's like you instantly become family.

Could you be anymore queer than here? Truly one of the epicenters of queer Columbus today. I always have a fantastic time when I come here.

Union Café has been a Columbus staple for decades and is well known for strong drinks, brunch,…read morekaraoke, and being a welcoming LGBTQIA+ space in the Short North. It had been years since my last visit, so I was excited to come back. One thing that caught us off guard was the ordering process. We bounced between inside and the patio a couple of times trying to figure out where to check in, get menus, and place an order. Eventually we learned that orders are placed at the bar rather than through traditional table service. Once we figured it out, everything went smoothly, but it wasn't immediately obvious. For drinks, we ordered a Green Tea Shot and a Green Tea Cocktail. Both were strong, well-made, and exactly what I'd expect from Union Café. Food was more hit-or-miss. Years ago, the Buffalo Chicken Quesadilla was my go-to order. This version arrived hot, cheesy, and loaded with filling, but the chicken seemed very different from what I remembered. The texture reminded me of canned chicken, and it lacked the seasoning and flavor that made the older version memorable. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't the quesadilla I came back hoping for. I also ordered the half Apple Orchard Salad. It looked great and included apples, feta, candied pecans, dried cranberries, and raspberry vinaigrette. The ingredients worked together fine, but I wouldn't personally pay $6 for the half or $12 for the full again. It felt overpriced for what it delivered. The standout item was the Loaded Tots. Crispy, hot, cheesy, topped with bacon and chipotle crema, and easily the best thing we ordered. No complaints there. Overall, Union Café still shines when it comes to atmosphere, drinks, patio seating, and community presence. I just wish the food had lived up to the memories that brought me back in the first place.

I understand it was one of the most busy nights of the year, but the way my friend and I were treated is flat out unacceptable. While my friend and I were standing in a corner talking, a male employee threw a cup of vomit into a trash can behind us.* The vomit splattered onto our backs and clothing. Because the bathroom lines were so long, we had to go out to our car to clean ourselves off. What happened next was worse than the accident itself. When I went back inside to report what had happened, the manager's first response was, "I'm sure he didn't throw it at you." Whether it was intentional was never the issue. An employee handled human vomit carelessly, and customers ended up covered in it. Rather than acknowledging that reality, I was dismissed. As the conversation continued, the response became even more frustrating. When I pushed back, I was met with a sarcastic "What do you want me to do about that?" At that point, I had just been splattered with human vomit by an employee. I wasn't asking for free drinks, free food, or compensation. I wanted someone in management to acknowledge that it happened and take it seriously. Instead, I felt like I was repeatedly being told that my experience either didn't matter or wasn't worth addressing. There was no apology, no acknowledgment, no mediation whatsoever from THE MANAGER of this establishment. The situation escalated further when another employee yelled at me because I was near the original scene of the vomit which I wasn't aware of. I was more focused on texting my group of friends that we were leaving and to see if they had other ways of getting home. It was dark and this was one of the only lone spaces in the patio. I hadn't even realized I was near it, and a another female employee yelled at me saying "If you're so concerned about the vomit, you wouldn't be standing in it." She then tried to kick me out after I saw the male employee who threw the vomit, and confronted him. She yelled at me saying "hey he's a hard working man, leave if you're going to treat staff like this." Honey, nobody is denying anyone's hard work on a busy night. Something disgusting and unacceptable happened to my friend and I because of a staff member. I am defensively standing up for myself because everyone has denied our experience so far. Again, the focus seemed to be on arguing with me rather than addressing the fact that staff had just gotten human bodily fluids on customers. Ironically, the employee who actually threw the cup was the only person who handled the situation appropriately. When I spoke with him, he sincerely apologized, took full responsibility for his mistake, and even gave me his name. I don't intend to drag him personally because he owned what happened. The people who made the experience truly awful were the other staff member and manager who repeatedly dismissed, deflected, and minimized the situation. Mistakes happen, especially on a busy night. I understand that. What matters is how a business responds when those mistakes affect customers. Getting vomit splashed on us was bad enough. Being met with sarcasm, defensiveness, and a complete lack of accountability from the women on staff afterward is what guarantees I won't be returning. I left feeling less upset about the accident itself than about how I was treated after reporting it. No customer should have to fight to be taken seriously after being covered in someone else's vomit. A simple apology, some accountability, and basic concern would have gone a long way. Instead, I left feeling gaslit, dismissed, and unwelcome. *Note: I only mention the genders of the staff involved because it provides context for the interactions I experienced.

This bar has a small town dive bar feel and its the best! I love a nice clean bar that gets fancy with the drinks but something about a bar that smells like cigarettes, alcohol, and like hadn't been cleaned in years just hits different. Everyone I met inside was super friendly and everything was priced very well! This bar only accepts cash and Venmo when I had went in. I only had beer since we weren't going to be very long. But from the mixed drinks that my friends had ordered they said they were strong. Cant go wrong with a strong drink but its not for everyone. When it comes to seating during these wild times of socially distancing they still had a good amount of seating inside at the bar and tables around the inside as well. Also, if you keep going further back in the bar you will find that they have a huge patio/outside area will tons of extra space and seating as well. Which makes it that much better! For a first time experience its a great place and a fun switch up from all the other bars that reside in the short north area. Just make sure you carry some cash on you or have the venmo app downloaded to use. Other than that I would recommend this place to anyone looking for something different to go to and try.

But there was no way I can have just one beer and go so I ended up running to the ATM and got cash so I can enjoy this little gem a bit longer and try some of Columbus' local beer and other beer from around Ohio. Really cool bartender as well. She was on point with service, and the prices are very affordable. Every time I come back to Columbus, I'm definitely stopping in again.

It has a fun atmosphere that makes it feel like more than just your typical neighborhood bar. The food was great! They have lots of different ways to build your own Philly, which I loved. There were also a bunch of different sauces to choose from, and I especially enjoyed getting to try those. The fries were thin, crispy, and came with a CRAP ton.
