Staying in the food desert known as "East Indianapolis", the only option was to Go West Young Man, where the culinary arts inside the perimeter beckoned. As I continue with the metaphors, Union50 was an oasis. While the charcuterie boards were exceedingly tempting, we opted for more basic provisions to start, for no other reason than truffle. Those repeat review readers are aware of my weaknesses in this area: namely I always get the truffle if it's on the menu. Thankfully, my eating colleague was a willing co-conspirator, and thankfully there was a truffle garlic sauce for dipping, as if we didn't have enough truffle (no such thing). Tasty app #1. Complementing the fries: tomato/goat cheese. Officially know as Wood-fired San Marzano Tomatoes + Goat Cheese, this concoction was a sort of cheesy tomato dipping sauce with bread--tasty app #2. At the ordering buzzer, we added beef tartar, with the right mix of mustard seeds, horseradish, crispy onions, quail egg (is there a wrong mix involving a quail egg--I implore all you quail egg aficionados). Tasty app #3. On to the main course: while apparently the lamb shank sounds amazing, braised for 3 hours and falling off the bone, I went for more of a "medium size" (Bistro) entree, and the gnocchi was excellent. More goat cheese, the ever-popular (in certain circles) trumpet mushroom, more wood-fires tomatoes. My colleague enjoyed the sushi, which I tried hard to find on the menu after he mentioned, knowing it was there somewhere, but just couldn't locate it. Must be on the "secret menu". It's probably on there under some other name, like "fish shank" or "leg of sea" or something. Attempting to go beyond reason, I also tried the carrot cake which was tasty, albeit a little extra on the frosting front so be prepared for sugar-coma. Overall a great meal, save that front door sticking open literally 10+ times and we Southerners making several trips over to shut it throughout the meal. The unluck of the seating draw. My family surprised with reservations to a 'new spot' I'd never been to on Mother's Day, and what a nice choice! The location was modern and charming, starting with the patio's curb appeal overflowing with flowers and unique blue umbrellas and flowing inside to the wall of windows and floor to ceiling bar. My youngest commented on the rolling ladder, hoping to catch someone climbing it. I personally loved the decorative wood accent on the ceiling over the kitchen. The live music was a bonus and a nice enhancement to the ambiance. We added the edimame & avocado hummus and goat stuffed pepadew peppers to complete our 'starter'. My youngest came to the table from washing her hands and summoned her sister, saying she had to "Come check out the sink! It has water and a (Dyson) hand dryer on the faucet." Too cool! She enjoyed the Chilaquiles Poutine, even after realizing that it wasn't just the 'cheese curds' that she'd ordered. The Spice Roasted Butternut Squash was the perfect entree for my teen, after she picked out all the jalapenos. Corey was dead set on the Kimchi Meatloaf and I added the Sticky Chicken Wings with seaweed salad. We all shared bites with one another and fully enjoyed everything that was served. Imagine that, kids not scoffing at trying something new! Looking around, we realized that Union 50 fits the needs of many, be it a casual hang with friends over cocktails and appetizers, a date night with someone new or just a night out for the family, though there was certainly no 'kids menu' - the fries were a hit (we didn't tell her there was gravy on top). The goat cheese tomato dip with the toasted baguette is a "must have" appetizer! I was really excited to try this place! I came as part of a work group dinner for a visiting professor. As far as atmosphere, it is a fun upscale casual feel with a nice amount of energy. It was a little loud for our group's purpose. We had a group of 7 people and it was hard to hear conversations for the other end of the table over the music and chatter. The food!! We started with a chef picked charcuterie board which was great! This was nice for a group of our size. I debated on what to order, but settled on the sea salt parsley fries and the wood fired mushrooms with tofu. Both items were much larger than I anticipated. The fries looked great, but they were a little over cooked for my taste. They were really hard and crunchy and I prefer a softer potato center. The house made ketchup and the garlic aioli were wonderful! I would give the fries another chance in thinking that this might have been a poor representation of their fries. I loved the mushrooms! They were rich and flavorful and the tofu was well seasoned and delicious. They were also very filling and I only ate about half and took the other half to go. I had a really great experience at Union 50 tonight. The atmosphere and service here is as advertised, a great place for a date or evening out with friends/coworkers. The service here is very friendly and efficient. They have an impressive cocktail,wine and whiskey list, with prices in line with other restaurants of this caliber. Really enjoyed the Smooth Ambler! My table split the charcuterie/cheese board with was nicely done and out in a flash. I highly recommend the salmon dish. Although it's served "southern style" it was still well balanced, and not too heavy on the sauce. I'd order that again in a heartbeat! Other guests at my table enjoyed mussels and shrimp and grits. Brah, this place, all the things onolicious. I get bored with steakhouses, cause the whole meal you stay grinding on the same cut of meat. It may be delicious, but its definitely lacking in variety. BUT If you like one smattering of flavors and textures, this is the place Union50! Going delight your senses guarans. The thing is, every plate is an experience, and I believe fairly priced. For two cuts of beef at your typical dry aged steak house (not even including sides!)you can have 6 different dishes, 2 drinks to share between you and your date! It's like a party in your mouth and everyone is coming. Aside from that, the ambiance is airy, high vaulted ceilings large windows, spectacular bar. Another great Cunningham Restaurant Group establishment. This place is unique in that they have live music several nights a week. The building is a former union hall and with high ceilings and openness it has a very lively studio 54 feel. But you can't overlook the food and cocktails. Union 50 gets a 5-star rating based on their decor and atmosphere. It is beautifully decorated. I love ever aspect of it. The blue music mural by the kitchen, I need in my living room. Over by the bar, they have shelves up to the ceiling with one of those layers you see in libraries (I didn't think I would see those anywhere but in a library); but it was really cool. They have an area for private parties which was nice. They also have live music which I really enjoyed. Sarah (something) and a Billon Stars were on showcase when we went and I really enjoyed their sound. Now Union 50 gets a 3-4 star rating when it comes to the food. I feel like they have a great menu, but they need just a little....something. We ordered stuffed dates which was absolutely delicious. It had cheese, chorizo, and something else in it; didn't think I would like it, but I really did. I ordered the scallops and they were really good, along with the sweet potato purée. However, the spinach lacked any enthusiasm. Simone at my table ordered shrimp and grits and said the shrimp was chewy. Another person ordered the special; which happened to be a seafood stew. It had mussels, shrimp and something else that I can't remember in a tomato sauce. Two things. First off, not sure if I would put seafood in a tomato sauce (just personal preference). If I'm paying $15 for 3 cheeses I expect a nice gourmet cheese wedge, not 1 string cheese sliver per cheese! It could be the size of laughing cow wedges but not impressed when it looks like you put a piece of string cheese on the plate. Added the pork belly for a few dollars more and even more of a joke! It was only 1 piece of pork belly. How is that shareable? Size was half a thick slice of bacon! Wow! We also had bacon wrapped dates, which were yummy, but only a few bites. Not really a share size appetizer for more than two people. Duck entree was delicious! We split an order and it was really tasty! The word on the street is that Indianapolis has gotten far more interesting than the Indian-No-Place of yesteryear. I candidly agree. The Cunningham Restaurant Group has added many unique dining experiences to the Indy restaurant scene, gaining renown in reviews across the nation. Their star gastropub, Union 50, is thought to be the apex in their portfolio of establishments. While I disagree that it is their best, this restaurant's excellence is worthy of review and discussion. Union 50 is a gastropub. In other words, it is a pub that serves high quality food (i.e. good enough for foodies). The space is large, open, and has high ceilings. While the layout is perfect for a place that features live music, it is not conducive for quiet dinner conversations. Union 50 obviously has a sizeable bar area, stocked with the finest of libations. It also has several large televisions, which feature sporting events. My personal preferences clearly conflict with the concept of Union 50. People shouting over a football game shouldn't be mixed with a fine dining experience. Regardless, this has not deterred multiple return visits. I recommend getting a reservation if you plan to dine at Union 50 - as the seating process can be rather chaotic. I blame this not on the restaurant's staff, but on the noise level and the layout of the place - there is no defined waiting area. Union 50 is ultra-modern. On one visit, our table, in the back room, had to be pulled in-and-out each time food was served, as well as when one needed to use the restroom. I found that to be annoying. Sitting in the main dining room is much easier. On a very positive note, our service has always top-notch. Our servers have never missed a beat, drink refill, or faltered when asked a question about the menu. On one occasion, the waitstaff went to great lengths to craft a pillow so my family member could comfortably sit after having surgery. This professionalism is what separates Union 50 from other restaurants. The food at Union 50 is nothing less than fantastic. We started with the Duck Fat Fries with house ketchup and aioli. While not the best in town, they were good enough to justify a second round. I ordered the Roasted Chicken "Grand Plate." The meat was especially tender and the chili-balsamic gastrique rub really tied the dish together. On the side came a drizzle of rosemary sweet potato and a pinch of Brussels sprouts. While the taste of the dish was grand, the size was not. The Kimchi Meatloaf is another popular choice at Union 50 - and with good reason. This isn't Grandma's meatloaf; we're talking the best rendition of an American favorite that I have ever tasted. Soft and tender with a subtle tang from the kimchi, every bite is worth savoring. If you're hungry, order two of them! My, my! Have you tried the chilaquiles? A unique take on the popular Mexican dish, it trades the tortilla chips for hand-cut fries. The guajillo pulled pork really makes the dish all-the-more hearty. While the chilaquiles proves to be the perfect snack before a grand meal, it will bring out the selfish traits in your personality (i.e. you won't want to share them). Don't leave before ordering the Tomahawk Pork Chop. It is large, wholesome, and packed with piquant flavor from the pickled vegetables atop the meat! Be damn sure to order dessert. I'm a sucker for breakfast foods at all times. If you're like me, be sure to order the Pain Perdu, which may just be the best French toast you've ever tasted. The House Cured Pastrami Poutine is SO tasty!! The thinly sliced pieces of pastrami, cheese curds, gravy and hot peppers went together so nicely and had just a slight amount of heat. I can't wait to have this again! Our main courses (Wood-Fired Wild Mushrooms w Tofu) and Tomahawk Pork Chop were both good. The mushrooms had great depth to them but the tofu, while drizzled with romesco, lacked flavor and was too soft for my taste. We sat at the bar and had decent service. So this restaurant is just fantastic and needs to be enjoyed by all! The area is very nice and very trendy. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating and abeautiful bar area. We sat in the bar area and the service was excellent! They are known for their cocktails and I can see why, they had a Star Wars theme menu that night and ordered several Kessel Run 12s (twist on an old fashion). We ordered a meat and cheese board along with the truffle fries, which we could not get enough of. Dinner we went with the Pork Chop and Duck, which they use a wood fire grill, and the meat had so much flavor and tenderness. They had several excellent dessert options but we went with the carrot cake and looking back we should have ordered two. The serving of Duck Duck was cooked perfectly and was paired perfectly with the parsnip purée. Union 50 always has a themed cocktail menu filled with an assortment of seasonally flavored cocktails (most recently Mean Girls, followed by Star Wars themed). I went to Union 50 during Devour week and didn't take a single picture! Honestly, the food and the company was so good I didn't even think to photograph the moment. That's how good this place is. Union 60 makes a great date spot! It's very intimate and they usually have live music on the weekends. Their cocktail menu is great, but I usually go for the Old Fashioned. I've never had one quite like there's. I've never had a full meal here, as I never visit during regular menu times. So I usually get fries and chicken wings. These aren't your typical sports bar wings and fries though. The weeks are wonderfully sticky and seasoned. They are Asian style with the perfect balance of sweet and tangy. The fries come different ways and you get a choice of two dipping sauces. I've only had the truffle oil fries and I like it best with the garlic aioli. You can always find a good band here as well. They have a calendar that lists all the performances for the month. It makes for a great night cap after a night on the town. read more

Your mobile mapplication announces: "You've arrived! Your destination is on the right." And so it is. You can see it. You can see people inside. But...where's the entrance? You'd heard there was no parking. Wasn't there supposed to be a valet? No signage. Not even a hint of a stand. {sigh} Go around the block to an alleyway named Cleveland Street. Drive about halfway down that roughly treated passage and you'll find the valet to your east. The main entrance is also a bit obscure, but it's the misplaced bit of architecture that offers no view of a door. Finally, you can agree with the palm of your hand. You've arrived. The space is expensive hipst'upscale heavy iron and wood, low-lit, yet warm, and surprisingly comfortable. Staff were welcoming, prompt, and knowledgeable. Jeepers! someone is doing it well! Your mileage will vary as much as the flavors on the card. The menu is eclectic. It's enough so that I didn't bother with an entree. Interesting appetizers deserved more attention. My wife went for the fried gnocchi entree which was tasty, but just barely browned on one side; nowhere close to "fried." The baked dates are a juicy, flavor-packed savory, sweet must-do. The pastrami poutine is mildly savory, almost sweet, and a meal in itself. The bone marrow, though interesting and yet another standalone meal, is a confused mix of food and flavors that fail to work with each other. Marrow stands on subtle flavor and buttery consistency. Lose either and it's both a waste of effort and money. Topped with a load of excellent barbecue pork and sauce, the dish is filling, but marrow lovers may best avoid it. Toasted bread intended for the marrow is used as a base of the stacked presentation. Soggy and saturated with barbecue sauce, it offers little more than an open-faced pork sandwich. Note to kitchen: you really need to rethink this dish -- it's a star-killer. But, one artistic blunder doesn't condemn the place. Overall, it was good. If I'm ever in the area again, I'd revisit. read more

Instead they chose to condescend me and tell me "their bad was only telling me it would be a half an hour wait". That was the worst part. That was their only condolence, a patronizing statement.
