Took my car in for a smog check and the guy working there didn't want to check my car because there was a cover on my catalytic converter. I completely understand that it would be difficult to do the smog check with a cover on the converter but the guy was really rude. Didn't want to help me out and told me that nobody else would do it either. I took it down the block to an Arco station which also had a smog check station. The lady was able to get the converter number and smog check the car successfully. This place got a bad rating for their attitude and service. Just go to the Arco gas station that's one block away on Centinela and Washington. It's $5 more but they're friendlier and with better service. read more

I came here because on the phone the guy quoted me $40 for a smog test. Low and behold when I show up the receptionist woman tells me it's $50 including the certificate. I tried to get a discount but failed. In hindsight I would've gone to one of many other places in Culver City with comparable charges but I just wanted to get this check over with since I'm late in renewing my car registration. I also think I should've gotten at least a $5 discount because the lazy woman gave me the work order to fill out so she could concentrate on playing a video game on her computer. Seriously, when I brought back the filled out paper, she made me wait til she was done playing. I didn't say anything because I didn't want it to affect the service or waiting time. That's why I'm here yelping about it! The actual service was decent and swift. They can register your car on the spot but for an extra $30. No thanks, the DMV is only down the road from them. Lastly, I know that independently owned small shops don't do much regarding appearance but this place really needs to. They have a few chairs outside for customers (unless you prefer to wait inside watching the video gamer in action) but one seat cushion looked like it was shredded by a psycho cat and the other plastic ones were dirty. This shop, rebranded or transferred to a new owner as UNIK, now deserves a zero or even negative "star" but "one star" is the lowest rating that I can give it on Yelp! I called Eddie on 11/29/19 to ensure they meet the DMV's "Star Certified" requirement. We agreed upon a $55 out-of-the-door total charge to cover all costs, including the smog and the EVAP tests, the Certificate, electronic filling, taxes, and free retest if necessary... I arrived some 30 minutes later at the shop. Mr. Cesar Yoss was testing another vehicle, which took more than 30 minutes! Cesar then told me it would cost $60. I told him that Eddie already agreed on a $55 out-of-the-door deal, and that is what I will pay. He shouted, "he does the test and I should negotiate with him." I then asked about the free retest. He told me that would cost another $10! I went to the main shop, talked to Eddie, who kindly told me let Cesar test the car and he will charge me $55 and honor our verbal agreement. I do not like "bait and switchers," black-mailers, "game players" and dishonest people of any kind. Thus, I told Cesar that I would post a negative review on Yelp if he does honor our verbal agreement. He responded, "You can do whatever you want; nobody cares about Yelp reviews!" Thus, I am posting this here so that Angelenos could show him how trivial Yelp is! Perhaps, he will think twice before trying such frauds again, which is no longer tolerated in the social-media era. He then spend more than half an hour struggling to complete my car's test, especially the engine timing. He then gave up and declared that my car failed the test but could not specify the problem, as required by regulators. But, my car had just gone through a complete 30 Kmi, major service and had only failed smog check once in 34 years by another incompetent technician! I reluctantly took my car back to this shop on 12/20/19. However, Cesar asked for another $30 because more than 10 days had passed since the failed test! The car indeed passed all tests! Yet, he still refused to certify it because he found the PCV hose defective upon "visual inspection." I told him that he should have checked it first before performing any tests and that, as an engineer, I know that the hose was not brand new but was functional, as verified by the ECU and the passed tests that he just completed! As a result, I took the car to another shop on 12/21/19. The car indeed passed all tests without problems! Bottom Line: I do not know what other antics Cesar might have in his arsenal. Eddie is kind and professional. He needs to get rid of Cesar, though. Until he does so, consider getting your smog check elsewhere! read more

Registration on my truck is due on April 30th, read the DMV letter and it states I need to be smogged at a STAR Center. My work schedule prevented me from getting to my go to Smog place (Glenn's Auto). Diesel smog done with zero issues, price was as quoted over the phone. I used this location 2 years ago to smog check my vehicle and process my registration without issue. The technician on Saturday 9/19 failed my vehicle without even speaking with me claiming in broken English that my catalytic converter was tampered with (it wasn't) laughing in my face. My vehicle passed all electronic output tests. I believe this was racially motivated. If you are Black steer clear of this establishment. read more

Under new ownership...THE WORST...STEER CLEAR!!! A friend suggested I try them because his neighbor recommended. My perfect running car failed for first time...I was in shock. Later found that recommendation was two years old and place failed my friend, his neighbor, and another car at my mechanics garage; all vehicles are in pristine, clean running condition. I found their deal on Groupon. I called and they said to come right in. Maybe it's due to the Coronavirus but it was very empty. They started a drive-through service window so people don't have to get out of the car. The service was very quick, 10 min, and I was out the door. Prices were very reasonable too. It was $39 + $10 cert fee for my truck. They can do registration with a service fee, which I didn't use. read more

Wouldn't it be wonderful if you could just buy a new vehicle every six years and remain exempt from the California smog-check con game? But to do that, you pay the highest registration renewal fees and insurance premiums, and your new car's value gets dented once it departs the dealership. If instead you keep the car longer, the fees and insurance rates bottom out but, in time, your vehicle enters the DMV's "High Emitter Profile." Begun in 1984, the state continues to herd proletarian or prudent motorists into designated full-service garages, or smog-check-only facilities, every two years for this sometimes-enervating dog-and-pony show, purportedly to save the planet. Resultant revenues pumped into government coffers are merely an afterthought, to be sure. Because the auto-repair racket can range from complete crookedness to rare reputability, it only makes sense to seek out a place that will charge you the least to pass the test and not exacerbate this insult to The People's intelligence. In the past three smog checks of my two vehicles, the guys at Unismog have passed them more seamlessly than at anyplace I've previously patronized. Asked by the tech if I had their on-line $10-off coupon, I told him that mine was from the Pennysaver and he quipped, "You must be cheap." I responded that I scan the publication for the occasional bargains that crop up, such as the Unismog coupon (Translation: Damn straight I'm cheap). Anyway, he said he didn't need the coupon, and ended up charging $40 for each vehicle. It's probably unwise to complain about the smog-test program, because the government might prefer to send out jackbooted thugs to confiscate all vehicles of a certain age to foster environmental responsibility and economic stimulus. What a breeze! Checked online for a coupon and sure enough I found a 20% off coupon. The total of their services was $60 - 20% = $48 out the door. Not bad considering that the last time I was here, I was only charged $40. Oh well, just as long as I passed with flying colors. Next up, go online and pay for my registration, but wait one day so that all the electronic transfers of data go through... Tip of the Day! A previous customer before me did not pass the smog because she just got a new battery put in her vehicle. Here's the tip: you must drive you vehicle 80 miles to get that battery into gear and in good working order before going to get a smog check. The automotive places say 30 miles but that didn't work. Listen to the smog people when they say 80 miles. Bingo, they're the ones doing the work where you need to pass. HOLLA! read more

I would totally give 5 stars for the service alone but have to deduct 1 star due to the coupon snafu. So, on Uni Smog's website ( http://unismog.net/ ) there is a coupon allowing you to get a smog check for the incredibly low price of $27.95 including certificate + electronic transfer. I knew this was too good to be true as every other place I've smogged my car at in the past charges $40 or $50 and then tacks on an extra $10 or so because my car was made in 1990. I knew this, but I went to Uni Smog anyways and I went without calling ahead to check the validity of the coupon. My mistake, I know. When I pulled up to the garage the guy said that the company had made an error and while it was listed on the website that his location will accept this price, that it's not set up in his system, so the lowest price he could give me was $40 all inclusive. This was still a great deal in light of what I've gone through before PLUS they offer a free re-test if your car fails so I agreed to the price. The guy, Moses, is actually a totally cool dude. Really friendly and nice, you can tell he's just a good person over all. He told me it would take about 15 minutes or so and suggested I walk 3 doors down and grab a coffee at Rutt's Cafe while I waited or I could hang out in the adjacent waiting area. Rutt's Cafe you say? Don't have to tell me twice! I grabbed a quick breakfast and coffee and by the time I gobbled down my food Moses was done with my car and was grabbing some take-out food himself! My car passed and if by chance I am unlucky enough to still be driving the same car 2 years from now (she's already 20 years old!) I will definitely head back to this location for my smog check. Hands down the best and fastest smog check experience I've ever had and I always drive busted old jalopies so I've had to do this every 2 years ever since I turned 16! read more

Unfortunately, James, who is mentioned favorably in other posts, no longer works here. Today I came back for a smog check after fixing a couple of things. As soon as I got out of the car, new guy told me I have a muffler leak. I mentioned that I was just under the car, there's nothing wrong with the muffler, and that he probably hears a slight rattling of the hood, which is bowed due to being slammed. He insisted that there's a leak or something is wrong with my engine, before stepping within 10 feet of my car, with the traffic noise of Washington Place 20 feet away. Speaking of away, that's where I headed. But first... New guy also told me that the price James quoted will not be honored and that I have to bring in another coupon, which I told him I had already given to James on a previous visit. He's like a wall of stone, this one, and doesn't budge. Meanwhile, I have no printer and getting another copy is a pain, as was getting the first. Anyway, where does the coupon end up...at headquarters?! Not likely. Clerk lady isn't helpful either. When I pulled in, she was sitting in one of the chairs outside, sunbathing face and cleavage. But, alas, no pool. The other day, she sold me a permit for 1-day vehicle operation for repair and she was immediately condescending, as if to establish a position of imagined authority. Service here sucks. I'm going to get smogged at K & K instead - 2446 Lincoln across from McDonald's. They've helped me a few times before and are always friendly and reasonable. This time, I didn't go to them initially because I was hoping to minimize the distance of my trip, considering my expired tags, and because James was helpful and personable the day I rode by on my bike and asked him a few questions. A smog is one of those things you don't think about until you get that notice from the DMV. Enough time passes between each smog check that people usually don't have a regular smog check station. For myself I believe it's been two years since I needed a smog check. I came to Uni Smog then and I decided to come back here after doing a few price comparisons over the phone and through Yelp. Other places didn't bother to pick up the phone or had higher prices. Grab the coupon off the Uni Smog site and get here early! It's first come first serve so you could be the only one there or you could be waiting behind three cars. Get here earlier and you'll increase your chances of being able to just pull up and be done after 10-15 minutes. It's only one tiny little smog check station that sits on a corner of a street. It's kind of a funny little place to drive by actually. I believe the same person helped me out this year as two years ago. I was lucky enough this time to pull right up and get my car checked. Passed with flying colors so I have no idea if they do anything for you if you don't pass. I've heard of some smog check places that will give you a free re-test or a discounted one if you don't pass the first time. It's a pretty easy process here and the guy who helps you is nice and easy to talk to. You get out of here in 10-15 minutes if you come early. The price has gone up from two years ago but I think it was the lowest price in the neighborhood with the coupon they have. I was instructed to wait a bit to pay my registration so that the smog check would go through the dmv system and I was done! Easy enough and decently painless (with the exception of $48). read more

The smog check station across the street from the DMV charges $48 and won't negotiate their price so I called up other local smog check stations and found Uni Smog just down the street. I negotiated the price down from $50 to $40 on the phone. Most local smog check stations charge between $40-45 for everything (test, certificate, etc.) so don't fork over any more than that! It's a small station on the corner that you can drive in/drive out of. It took about 15 minutes for the test, the first of which I failed. :( I was offered a free re-test which I took advantage of a few hours later (after paying a visit to Jim Matson Automotive and The Transmission Shop) and I passed! Fast, efficient, knowledgable and honest service. Total cost = $41.75 including tax. read more

TERRIBLE service! Noor scratched my car while pulling into the garage for my smog check. He started pulling in, then had to stop and reverse before pulling all the way in. I noticed the maneuver, but didn't really think anything of it as surely he MUST know how to pull a car into his own garage as he does it all the time, right? Wrong. Anyway, by the time the car was done getting smogged, I got in on the drivers side and drove away.....didn't even think to check around the car for any damage. Why would I? Then, when I got home, that's when I noticed. The front passenger side of the car was totally scratched from when he tried to pull into the garage. Clearly he scrapped the side/corner of the wall and didn't even think to tell me or own up to it. How sleezy is that?! I called them up, spoke to Noor and he, of course, denied it. He got really defensive and aggressive when I mentioned getting insurance involved. Then, he said that he'd send me over to his friend at a nearby body shop to fix it without getting any insurance involved, just because he was being a "nice guy." Yeah right. The whole thing was totally shady and terrible service. And now i'm left with a semi-concealed scratch on my front end a terrible taste in my mouth from Uni Smog. read more
