By a mile, these smog test facility is the best I've ever experienced. The man who serviced me, was truly a gentleman, both on the phone and in person. His price was less than 1/2 of what others quoted me. Older cars--no problem. There were no surprises or extra fees. Service was prompt and before I knew it, he'd already had all my documents ready and those that needed to be sent to the DMV sent before I even asked. The Venice Blvd location was a few little places to walk to. By the time you take a little walk and come back, your car is done and all the paperwork is in order. Just pay and go. Don't be fooled by the yelp promotion that makes the smog check $40. I waited for half an hour then showed the technician the yelp check in coupon and he said, "no, that's not us." Liar All he had to say was that they don't offer the Yelp promotion anymore and I wouldn't felt compelled to post this review. Completely unprofessional. Failed my car because the catalytic converter monitor was incomplete even though CA law states that my car would pass if any one of the monitors were incomplete. My car is a 1996 model year and any vehicle from 1996-1999 can have any one incomplete monitor to pass. When I asked the guy to show me the rule/law that explains why he failed me, he told me he doesn't need to, that he is the expert, and that I am wrong. And then he just walked away. So rude. Go to Swift Smog just down the street. They are way more professional and kinder. read more

So disappointing. Despite some of the negative reviews, I thought I'd give them a try. I had to get a smog test, but I narrowly avoided being swindled by the main mechanic. It sure was "nice" of him to use his handheld device to check my battery/shocks/whatever (I'm not savvy when it comes to cars); except, he said my car would fail the smog check and the yellow lights on the device indicated that 4 or 5 of my shocks were out. I asked him how much it would cost to replace each shock. Around $1,000 each. He wanted to save me money, so suggested I run the engine on the freeway and come back. I couldn't do that the day of, so I drove on the freeway for a good while before coming back the next day. Upon another handheld device inspection, he said I would fail the smog test. Except this time: He offered to submit a certificate to the DMV stating my car had passed if I gave him something like $800. Ridiculous, right? In case it wasn't obvious, HE STRAIGHT UP ASKED FOR A BRIBE. "Nice" is right. This is sarcasm, so--please--nobody trust this guy. Ultimately, I went to a garage closer to where I live and my car passed the smog test. The mechanic there also informed me that cars don't even have 5 shocks and that mine were fine. Moral of the story: don't come here. I try not to disparage any businesses, but someone really needs to look into this particular mechanic as I question his moral integrity. I don't think if I've EVER said this before on Yelp, but if I could, I would give 0 or negative stars to this establishment. read more

I've used them in the past with no problems, but took an older BMW to them this year. They ran an evaporative functional test that isn't supposed to be run on this model and it failed. I replaced a bunch of hoses and failed a retest. That's when it got interesting - the smog tech offered to pass the car if I paid $150 extra. I said no thanks, and reported them to the Bureau of Automotive Repair. My car passed smog with no problems with a BAR referee who pointed out a number of things that AA Smog did wrong, and AA Smog lost their STAR certification. Moral of the story, don't cheat your customers because karma always gets you in the end. read more

Bottom Line: I am awarding five (5) Stars to this Star-certified smog-check station. Manuel and Alex are technically competent and friendly professionals who are upfront and empathetic. I strongly recommend them, especially for older cars that may need caring, competent hands to pass the smog test. Here is a "case study" of my experience with them: 1. I took my 1987 Honda to another highly-rated station on the Westside right after last Thanksgiving. The shop had been turned over to an incompetent technician with no communication skills! 2. My car was left idling for more than half an hour, while he worked on another vehicle. 3. He then spend more than half an hour struggling to complete my car's test, especially the engine timing. 4. He then gave up and declared that my car failed the test but could not specify the problem, as required by regulators. But, my car had just gone through a complete 30 Kmi, major service and had only failed smog check once in 34 years by another incompetent technician! Thus... 5. I took my car to "AA Smogs" on 12/19/19, after talking with Manuel the day before and agreeing on their advertised, discounted price. However... 6. After Manuel found out that another shop had failed my car, he advised me I would be better off to take it back to the same shop to get their "free retest," instead of paying him again. He even voluntarily ran an unofficial test free of charge and told me that my car is passing the ASM Emission test! 7. I reluctantly took my car back to the first shop on 12/20/19. The incompetent technician asked for another $30 because more than 10 days had passed since the failed test! 8. The car indeed passed all tests! Yet, he still refused to certify it because he found the PCV hose defective upon "visual inspection." I told him that he should have checked it first before performing any tests and that, as an engineer, I know that the hose was not brand new but was functional, as verified by the ECU and the passed tests that he just completed! As a result... 9. I called Manuel again, told him that I have no confidence in the incompetent technician, and asked him to complete the test on my car. He and his boss, Alex, graciously agreed to do it. 10. I took the car to "AA Smogs" on 12/21/19, a busy Saturday before the holidays! Alex and Manuel both thoroughly checked the car, agreed with me that the old PCV hose was just fine. 11. The car indeed passed all tests once again! Manuel then charged me for the previously agreed, total price, and electronically filed the smog-check certificate. In short, I strongly recommend them both. I decided to write this review because I saw a few unfair, negative reviews here. For example, a few people have complained about the $8.75 Certificate fee. I checked their prices posted online. They have clearly itemized the $8.75 fee and the additional $10 EVAP test charge for pre-1996 vehicles, such as mine. I gladly paid for both charges. After all, $8.75 goes to the CA DMV, not to their pocket, and the EVAP test takes special equipment to check for any fuel leak from the tank or lines. I'm a long term customer at this place. Called ahead to make sure the were still open - no appt necessary, first come first served. Arrived and dude said I was next after car already being tested. The guy ended up taking TWO other people before me, both of whom had arrived after I did. First come first served!? Don't think so. I had to wait at least an hour as he leisurely serviced the line cutters and chatted with them. I was boiling mad, but just paid up and left when my car was finally ready. Shady business. Very disappointed with my experience smogging my jeep. I have patronized this place around 4 times in the past and have even referred it to a few people. But NEVER again. So what happened today...I take my jeep in hoping for the best but not really expecting it to pass. My experience two years ago at this same place was it did not pass but I paid for the service and applied with the B.A.R. and had it eventually repaired. I was expecting the same thing today but there were a few twists. Well, my jeep actually passed the emissions test but they failed me for it not being timed properly and for my "check engine" light being out. I can't expertly dispute the timing issue, but, my doubt about that is that it was timed less than 2 years ago and has maybe 1500 miles since and is running great. The check engine light??? It doesn't have one! He tells my his "book" says it does and there is wiring in place for it. Doesn't mean anything, if there is no place for it on the dash then how can I get dinged for it? (It's a 1990). And most of all it has NEVER been required in the more than 15 years I've owned it! Now comes time to pay, of course I have a coupon for $26 plus $10 for vehicles older than 1995. There is a charge on the estimate for the smog certificate you receive after PASSING the test. Well, he tries to tell me the report is what the charge is for. B.S.! You pay for the certificate ONLY if you pass. After I refused he relented and charged me the $36. Of course before the dispute he tells me I ONLY have to pay $10 more (after the almost $50) to bring it back to be re-smogged. Besides, when I rolled up I got that not so great vibe you get from these kinds of shady shops. They stalled my jeep at least 6 times (it's a standard) and they slammed the hell out of my hood when they were finishing up. SCAM ALERT! READ THIS! ZERO STARS!!This place is a complete scam. The "coupon" they offer is not labeled properly in the hope that when you show up and when they tell you that your car is to heavy, you will just go ahead and have them smog your car at FULL PRICE. I just drove there in the rain and found this out the hard way, had to come back in rush hour, LA traffic. I showed the guy my coupon and he said "no, that's for cars that are under 5000 lbs." NOWHERE on the coupon does it say this. It says "Offer applies to vehicles under 5000 GVWR" What the HELL is GVWR? This is the tactic! If they wanted to be honest they would very easily put on this coupon "Offer applies to vehicles under 5000 lbs" I don't speak "Smog" and GVWR does not mean pounds (lbs) in English, Spanish, Korean or ANY other language. What a SCAM! Think about it! They are not putting this on the coupon because they want you to show up and when they tell you your vehicle is over the weight limit they hope you will just go ahead and pay the full amount of $60 plus some other tacked on fees. I came here for a smog check, and had a very pleasant experience. When I was calling around, trying to find the best place to get a smog check, this was the only place where the worker actually spoke English (or understandable English anyways). I made an appointment for a smog check at 9am. When I got there, I was the first one there because apparently, the guy who was supposed to open up shop was was a no-show. The guy that did show up was very nice and very apologetic about it. He did the smog check for my car, and it took about 10 minutes - very quick! I had a $40 smog check coupon from the internet. Upon ringing me up, I asked him if there was a fee or minimum for credit cards (I actually saw a sign that said, credit card purchases is an additional 3% but figured I'd ask anyways). The guy smiled and said "no". How nice! He also didn't charge tax! So I paid with my credit card, for 40 bucks flat, and I was outta there in 20 minutes. This place is tucked away behind a car shop, off the busy street of Venice, so I don't imagine this place to ever get too crowded or ever have a long wait. read more

Fantastic! Hidden gem on Venice right next to a repair shop and close to other smog check stations so make sure you find the right one. It's a driveway that you turn into for a bit and the signs are easy to miss. They were referred to me by my mechanic and Chris was extremely friendly and helpful. They took me right away, no wait - and very efficient - unlike the one down the street that I passed that had a huge line and couldn't even fit the waiting customers in their lot. Smog check is usually a pain at best but this place was by far the best of the ones I've had to deal with and actually has space for cars to park and wait if there is a line (shocker!) Reasonably priced and CA STAR certified if your smog check notice requires it - complete with DMV electronic notification. Why is everyone saying this place is a scam?? I had to get my smog check ASAP because my registration was expiring in a matter of days. I also had no idea that the DMV needed another smog check when i already gave them my smog check last year... But ANYWAYS i came here and got my smog check done in a matter of 10-15 mins! Super fast service! But regardless of that, I was talking to the person in charge and he was so friendly that before I knew it, my car was done! I did get a mini heart attack when he told me that i failed the smog check, but he was just joking around!
