I am so impressed by this locally-owned shop that's been around for 38 years! Shout out to Samantha for helping me pick out a gift for a bachelorette party I had just a few hours after I stopped in. I am quite a frugal person, so there was a period in my life where I'd been wary of boutique shops because of the possibility of high prices and low selection. I've grown out of that wariness somewhat and have been trying to shop as local as possible, so when I found Underthings on Yelp when I needed to buy a gift for that party, I was psyched to give it a try. I told Samantha a little bit about my friendship with the bride, and she was able to work with my pretty random tidbits of information to help me find something absolutely perfect. The thing I appreciated the most, though, was the variety in prices. I knew going in that there would be affordable pieces inside, because I'd read others' reviews on Yelp. There were super-fancy pieces that were pricier, along with more casual, affordable pieces as well. They also do a panty club, where for six months or more one can sign up to receive a panty from them. I love this added touch, and am considering it after how much I enjoyed my stop in! Maria was wonderful. She immediately greeted me with a smile and let me know that there was a 50% off sale going on. I didn't know quite what I was looking for but after measuring me (apparently I've been wearing the wrong bra size my whole life) she brought me several items that looked great with my pale skin. I ended up walking away with a beautiful Heidi Klum bra-and-thong set for $50 (sale price), which is beyond amazing. I think I have visited most of the small businesses in the 'burbs that cater to "what lies beneath," as it were. I've given up on department stores for finding my size, and it's just easier to have someone who knows what they're doing spend some time with you. Yeah, they're usually more expensive, but you wear these things all day every day. So I am of the "throw some money at the problem" school -- invest in some proper basics and you won't keep re-buying for a while. Given that framework, while in Chicago one week-end a girlfriend indulged me and we went on a mission. This store is small but laid out with loving attention, and everything is beautiful: matched sets along one wall, a glass display table in the middle, an array of fluffy maribou slippers in one corner. This is a place where you ARE at the mercy of the clerk who is helping you, because the stock is in the back. She'll measure you [this really is vital, no matter where you shop. YOU are never going to "guess" right!] and then start running back and forth to find you styles based on what you are saying works and what doesn't. It took a few minutes for the young lady and I to get in synch; she was a bit brusque at first, but when I explained what problems I was having (and the problems I TYPICALLY have), that seemed to help and everyone mellowed out. She knew everything about the brands, which came with sets (one bra I bought was part of a set that even had a garter belt. Woo), and didn't seem judgy when I told her that a couple were out of my price range. I ended up with several things and have been very happy with them! And thus my lingerie boutique addiction continues. I don't live close by, but I am in the city often enough that the next time I need an infusion of underthings I can easily enough come in. I had a fantastic time at this shop! I had always been wearing random cheap bras (like from Primark) or if I'd "splurge" it'd be Victoria's Secret. But one day I noticed all my bras had something wrong with them and I'd feel sore at the end of the day. I stumbled upon Underthings and my mind was blown. The women there helped me find the right size and then loaded me with tons to try for different purposes (since I pretty much wanted to replace my whole collection). I never felt pressure to buy, and it felt like shopping with an aunt or sister. The prices were about on par with Victoria's Secret or a little higher - like $50-60ish. I ended up buying two to start. Now about a month later, I feel these are well worth it. Feels like I don't have anything on and I don't feel sore at the end of the day. Someone forwarded me a link that the foam materials used in Victoria's Secret bras are possibly carcinogenic. Naturally, I love my girl parts and the last thing I want is to lose them or leave them suffering and embarrassed because of toxic, ridiculous over-padding, "angel" logos or wear panties that say "do me" GROSS. So in going thru my everyday lingerie, I realized that there was one bra brand adored and worn not only regularly but comfortably: Cosabella. This store has a lot of Cosabella- which is great because I like the candy colors and appreciate there are no cartoon dogs, "PINK" or "Juicy" printed across the bum in sequins. The salespeople are genuinely helpful without being intrusive or pushy. And you don't look like you glued hideous Styrofoam cantaloupes to your chest. It's magic! read more

5-star underwear experience! With approximately 20 minutes to find a classy, cute, unique, sexy bachelorette gift in LP...of course, I turned to the Yelp app and typed in "lingerie" + "Lincoln Park." Results: Isabella (auto-skip, you can read my previous review for more info) Underthings (oooo, what be this, pretties!?) So, after a short jaunt over to Webster/Halsted (it's just west of Halsted, tucked away)....I snagged Gaga parking, and entered in a haze of rushed errands and frantic searching. I'd never even HEARD of this shop (they've been around for years, too!) And, then...greeted warmly by Victoria (pun intended...the only secret she's got is that she's awesome)...I quickly picked out a very classic gray lace nightie ($45, very well priced!) and a lace-y thong as some icing on the bachelorette cake. Franticism halted. Victoria wrapped the gift up in a cute little box, tied some ribbon around it...and I was on my way. In about 10 minutes flat. Would I come back? Absolutely...their selection of nighties, panties and bras is quite good, despite the store being on the small side. An array of colors, sizes, fabrics and shapes. It's very well laid out, the staff is beyond friendly/helpful and the entire vibe is very welcoming. I mean c'mon...they assist you in attractively concealing (holding up?) your underthings...and they do it QUITE well. Hooray! If you had the same issues I had with Isabella, this could be your new haven. Even if you didn't...it's definitely worth a spin. read more

In my years of Yelp, I've generally only written for great small places that need more business or on a very rare occasion, a business that has disrespected me in a way that I won't soon forget. Unfortunately, this review falls into the latter category. I was so excited to try this place today. Had been on a quest to get a well-fitted bra for a couple of months and as soon as I moved to town, it was high on my priority list. I came here exclusively for the one on one fitting and expertise of their staff. Instead, I found the staff person to be extremely condescending in our interactions. Aside from how she skipped the basic niceties (like greeting me or looking up from her phone when I came in), she also was curt a few times (I asked if she had any recommendations and she responded: "as I was about to say..." -- and no, I hadn't cut her off). She also inquired several times about my previous bra buying attempts (Nordstrom Rack) and then did the self-assured shrug/smile when I mentioned I went to the Rack, not Nordstrom itself. Despite this, I really, really needed new bras and wanted to buy 3-5 on this trip, so I went into the fitting room. When Stephanie came in to check on me, she repeatedly left the curtain open, even when another customer entered the store and could see me half-bare in the fitting room. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, I was unimpressed by her display of knowledge about bras. Her first question to me was about color, not cut, fit, or material. Then, after she gave me a band size larger than I needed, I mentioned it was too big and she brought out an even larger band size. After about 5-6 trials, I decided to head out because I didn't want to waste my time at a place where I was being talked to in a curt tone by someone who was more interested in checking her phone updates than providing me any assistance. As I thanked her on my way out -- she responded by chiding me for not having her come see the last set. Thanks, but no thanks. Honestly, I'm pretty baffled by this experience, especially given all the positive reviews of this place. I was dressed down for the weekend, blouse and jeans with no make-up and hair pulled back. I'm not sure what combination of these factors (and my Nordstrom Rack backstory) deserves being treated like a second-class citizen, but I sure won't be returning for it again. read more

Bachelorette party gift needed. Go! Hello, Underthings - a small storefront on Webster. The walls are covered in lingerie, bra-and-panty sets, and underwear. Prices seemed low, given the Lincoln Park location, but the lingerie was nothing special. A large section was devoted to sedate cover-ups (think robes and terrycloth material). I found this a little comical and confusing, as I surely don't come to lingerie stores to hone my modesty. The whole time I browsed, I was the only person in the store. The saleslady, thus, conversed with me non-stop. Did I need help? Did I want to try things on? Did I need a size I didn't see on the racks? While I appreciate some attention while shopping, there comes a point when I need a little personal space - especially when I'm knee-deep in panties. read more

OK, first of all, this boutique is adorable. It's just a tiny little place with a couple of fitting rooms but it's totally charming. Second, the women who worked here knew exactly what size I was just by looking at me. Honestly, that takes talent, but they do also offer fittings for those in-between sizes. Added bonus? There is no awkward sales pitch or pressure. The employees are so sweet and very helpful in getting you exactly what you were looking for. And finally, for about the same amount you would spend at Victoria's Secret, you can find high-quality basic and racy underthings, chemises and cozy nightgowns. Everything is very tasteful -- and you don't have to fight over a 16-year-old girl with braces for your size. Definitely will be making this my new stop for everything under-related! I love pretty lingerie. I do. And Underthings is a very pretty lingerie shop. I came here with a friend to help her find a strapless bra. The saleswomen were sweet as can be and chatted me up while my friend tried on her stuff. I was bummed they didn't carry bras in my size (they only carry sizes 30A - 38DD/E) but underthings had tons of other fun things for me to shop for like sexy rompers and lacy thongs. Just got home from a shopping trip from this place. It's fantastic! I will never ever go to Victoria's Secret again as long as I live in this city. They have a MASSIVE collection, especially considering how tiny the store is... all the Cosabella, Honeydew, Natori, and Eberjey your heart can desire. All kinds of bras and bralettes (!! thank god!!), nighties, panties, even Spanx! The place was packed. The prices range widely as well, I tried on panties that cost from $12 all the way up to $60, nighties that started at $28 and went up to $90ish. Everything was beautiful. The service was outstanding! These women really know their stock... what sizes they have, how things fit, where things are, what could possibly match with what, which series comes in thongs or boyshorts or what, what might look good with your skin, everything. They were also incredibly patient. I spent about an hour in there and they were very attentive, and not at all annoyed I was asking to try on so many things in different sizes (you know how lingerie can get!) and was taking a really long time. I also only bought two full sets (even though I tried over a dozen!), but they were still very gracious. They were just happy to help and make a sale! Lots of people came in and out while I was there and each was greeted very warmly and sincerely. My only qualm is that this neighborhood is a b*tch to park in! Ugh, it took me forever to find a spot. Also, the dressing rooms could be made nicer but the store is really small, so I understand. read more

The sales girl that helped me was super nice and helpful, and dove right in to pulling suggested pieces for me. I really appreciated the help, since I didn't go in knowing exactly what I was looking for. She also immediately offered to extend the return/exchange policy by 1 week when I told her it was a gift and the party wasn't for 1 more week. I moved into the neighborhood about six years ago and have been a faithful ever since. No matter what I"m looking for, they have it or they can get it for me. I love their selection of Hanky Pankies, Pleasure State, and Honeydew (just to name a few brands) and the quality of their stocking collection. They have an awesome selection of everything (and every price range) from basic foundation garments and snuggle pajamas to racy lingerie. The staff is very knowledgable and pleasant. My husband bought my honeymoon 'present' there and couldn't say enough about how helpful they were for someone who knew nothing about 'those things'. I've admittedly been a Victoria's Secret person for years---mostly because I didn't know where else to go in order to find a decent bra! After being disappointed by ill fitting bras for years, I finally stepped into Underthings. They were great! The saleslady spent time fitting me for the right bra (finally!) and we even went through a number of different options. I walked out with tan and black everyday t-shirt bras as well as something that brings a little va-va voom for nights out and deep v-necks. This is a great place to by lingerie - I love the Elle Macpherson bras and underwear and they carry Hanky Panky thongs which are the best. The staff is really friendly and know a lot about their selection. I also bought a robe here that I am in love with. They carry Oscar de la Renta and Calvin Klein and are always well stocked. I love the ladies who work in this store. You can go in, tell them what sorts of underwear you like, and they'll bring you things they think you might like. Best of all, they will try to help you stay within a price range if you have one or will stick to sale items only if that's what you came in for. I came in here last week to buy a gift for my sister in law and ended up buying things for myself as well. The sales in here are great and the non-sale items are worth the price anyway. I bought several pairs of hanky pankies- the best!!! The "panty of the month" club is a great gift idea. For $75 the gift receiver gets a different panty every month. This shop is a lovely reminder of what fantastic customer service can be as exemplified by the fine saleswomen. The rainbow assortment of Cosabella on the table makes you want to get one in every color, and is an example of the merchandising that sets this lingerie boutique apart from more mainstream underwear stores. The last time I was there I ended up with a very saucy hot pink zebra burnout set from the sale section that made my boyfriend go bananas! Not sure about the selection stuff broughr back to fitting area was beautiful, fit properly and was superbly consrructed. I'd have given this place 5 but the interaction with the particular staff who was otherwise very helpful ended not well. I wore my thinnest T-shirt to fit but not good enough. I was given one a camisole to test; apparently it was for sale and not reserved for this purpose. After bringing several hundred dollars of stuff to purchase to the register the woman who had heretofore been very helpful made a huge production of trying blot out a very small smudge of make-up on the camisole, frowning and huffing all the way. I was on the verge of walking out. She luckily for her decided to delay finish cleaning the camisole, stop the dramatics and completed the sale. Was this just a serotonin-deficient moment? It's my favorite place to buy underwears! I don't get the other reviewer that complained about the D&G and Gucci underwear here because I've never seen those brands there. As an avid lingerie shopper, being in Chicago is kind of disappointing. I don't like department stores, and while the Rack can have some good deals, the selection is awful. So, I stumbled upon this gem. I recently came in and the two girls working were welcoming and warm and immediately helped me with the store layout. One helped fit me and give me a selection of bras that were both basic and utilitarian, then also some fun new ones to update me with my new size. The staff was kind, helpful, and fun! For a process like bra shopping, being comfortable is key. The store, while tiny, can pack a lot. My favorite brand being Eberjey. The selection was low when I came, but was told there should be new shipments in the fall. I will be returning after a wonderful experience! read more

I went to Underthings after it was suggested to me by another lingerie shop. I desperately needed a corset/bustier to wear under a strapless bridesmaid dress and could not find one that fit me properly anywhere. I called ahead and the woman who answered was so nice and checked her stock for me before I drove over there. Underthings had a great selection of very cute options and a range of sizes.
