Mac salad with too much black pepper
Allena C.

Spur of the moment early dinner at Unco Frank's! When we arrived, the restaurant was quiet with just a few people having cocktails. We sat in the back with the only table that seats 4. Their menu is limited and they were out of Teri Chicken. And looking at reviews, I noticed their menu seemed to have shrunk having fewer choices. So we only ordered 3 dishes. ***OUR PICKS*** GRILLED KALBI ~ small platter of kalbi without any rice, salad or anything. I thought this came with sides and was a complete meal. Flavor was on point and meat was good, but the value wasn't there and it felt like we got an incomplete dish. 2/5 PUPU PLATTER ~ this is like a sampler platter that was perfect as a taster, since there was 4 of us. I enjoyed the mochiko chicken best. Fries were crispy, though nothing out of this world with the addition of spam and kimchi. Just made it salty. And the pork sliders were ok. The main portion of this dish was the fries. We got 3 pieces of chicken and 2 small sliders. 3.5/5 MAC SALAD ~ You have to order this separately though I should be included with the entrees. Although this Mac salad was creamy, I only tasted black pepper. Pretty one note. And it was grey in color which isn't appetizing. 2/5 When you order kalbi at any restaurant, you get sides and do not have to order them separately. It should have been a meal especially if we didn't have the pupu platter. That was so disappointing. I guess it's more of a bar and Hawaiian tapas kind of spot. Can't say I'll be back when there are plenty of other Hawaiian restaurants to choose from that give better portions and food.

When I heard there was Hawaiian food to be devoured on Clement, I just figured it would look like a plate lunch joint like on Oahu but maybe with atmospheric touches like retro tiki wallpaper, murals of pipeline surfers, and twangy ukulele music coming out of the speakers. I must be living in an Elvis 'Blue Hawaii' fever dream because it's nothing like that here. Instead it's a darkly stylish wine bar that happens to have a Hawaiian food menu. Surprisingly it all goes well together. For instance, I started with a $16 specialty cocktail called Death in the Afternoon which mixed champagne and absinthe cordial into an effervescent libation (photo: https://yelp.to/ROPW68ABxm). You might be surprised to find out champagne is compatible with... Auntie Rob's Fried Rice for $16. It was a classic rendition with Spam, ginger, scallions, mushrooms, and a sunnyside up egg (photo: https://yelp.to/BSXmNY3xHC). I was quite satisfied, and it was encouraging to see plenty of other local grindz on their menu like mochiko chicken, kalua pig sliders, and coconut shrimp. I think everyone deserves a little champagne with their fried rice, don't you? FOOD - 4 stars...local grindz done pretty well COCKTAIL - 4.5 stars...a bubbly delight AMBIANCE - 4 stars...modern and not too crowded in the afternoon SERVICE - 4 stars...friendly bartender who handles the food orders TOTAL - 4 stars...a different way to have Hawaiian RELATED - Exploring the Richmond? Pupu platter is definitely a must try. The Pupu platter at Unco Frank's was delicious. It came with kalua pork sliders, spam fries, and fried chicken. The highlight of the dish was definitely the fried chicken. It was really juicy and crispy! The flavor the fried chicken came with was similar to honey butter almost. The Pupu platter derives from the Hawaiian word pu-pu which means appetizers. Essentially, it's a tray of appetizers! Our friends also order other assortments such as the edamame, macaroni salad, and coconut shrimps! They also said they really enjoyed it! Overall, great experience, staff was super friendly, and it wasn't too busy as well. We were able to grab a seat immediately.

Pupu Platter ($28) amply serves 2 & includes Da Works Fries, Mochiko Chicken, and Kalua Pig Sliders

Only because I was looking for Richmond District food and drinks on a Monday evening did I stumble upon Unco Frank's, a purveyor of Hawaiian "grindz" operating inside a Clement Street wine bar (High Treason). It's a mash-up that sounds unworkable as I've never once craved Hawaiian fare alongside my Cabernet but remarkably, it does work, quite well. I waffled between Furikake Fries ($11) and "Da Works Fries" ($17) before looking at another table and seeing the size of the latter. As much as I love fries - all fries - this was dinner and I wanted something a little more varied. The Pupu Platter ($28) over-serves two, and includes Da Works Fries, 2 Kalua Pig Sliders, and a few delicious pieces of Mochiko Chicken. I think it's the perfect thing to order here, allowing you to sample a few different things without tiring of any of them. It was a delicious combination. If you're still put off by the idea of grindz with wine do know that High Treason's menu, despite it being a wine bar, includes beer and other drinks, some featuring no alcohol at all. Unco Frank's is a delightfully tasty discovery that one would likely have to know of to unearth. And now you do.

We had Unco Frank's cater my wife's birthday party. She grew up on Kauai and this is the best local grindz around! Loved the Kalua Pig, Mochiko Chicken, Mac salad, fried rice - everything :) Frank made everything really easy to work with too - highly recommended!

May 2025 - This place is such a hidden gem! Really hard to find, but the food was good and I've had it twice now! If you're craving Hawaiian food, this is a great spot!

That macaroni salad, the best part, but this meal is on time. That chicken is out of this world. The presentation meets Michelin star standards. The service was great. The place was so packed with people enjoying their selves having nice times it was pretty enjoyable to any looking for comfort food.

Unco Franks got the ono grindz! I really dig this permanent food pop up inside High Treason, especially since there's not much Hawaiian food in the city. Pupu platter was a great way to get a taste of the appetizers, and even better to wash it down with a nice glass of wine in a hip wine bar. I've frequently walked by this place on Clement St, so it was awesome to finally go in and enjoy the casual atmosphere and delicious food.

Kalua pig sliders + Furikake Fries ($17, togo offer only), Mac Salad ($6) ketchup not included

My friend and I ordered to go. Apparently there is a separate togo menu that offers different things. If you order to go, the sliders come with fries. The pupu plater is not offered for togo orders. The food was amazing, however I might only grab the carb options again, as 17 for three tiny sliders didn't feel great. I would have just gone for the fries on their own and the mac salad. While we didn't eat there, we waited in the dining room. Everyone working there was super kind in helping explain the differences between togo and dine in orders. The location itself looked beautiful and newly opened. The place had a San Diego feel to it. It had a chill vibe early in the evening when the dinner rush hadn't set in.

Super peppery not your typical Hawaiian mac salad
Karen T.

I should have read the yelp reviews before ordering the mac salad. I was thrown off by the not traditional Hawaiian mac salad taste. You better LOVE black pepper to get this. I honestly thought they messed up by adding soooooo much pepper! I had to ask our waiter is this normal or a mistake? Haha We got the pupu platter to try it all, Michiko chicken good! Spam kimchi fries delicious! Now the fish in the fish sliders, hmmm was super fishy and dry kinda tasted like frozen fish. If I went back, fries and chicken for sure.

Ok... Was looking for a place for the fam to eat since we're not in this area too often. Saw this place on Yelp and was craving some Hawaiian food. Now, keep in mind, after seeing some reviews, I was expecting a Noelani's type vibe (San Carlos). Boy was we all wrong. We park and keep missing the front door. The sign to the place is real small - almost like a secret hidden spot. Walk in, and the ambiance is dark, and there is some funk/pop rock music playing in the background. This is weird I tell the mrs. So we grab some menus and sit towards the front, galley seating style. Ordered furikake fries, fried rice, mochiko chicken, mac salad, and some fish sandos. Fries-these were pretty good. You can taste the butter and olive oil and furikake thats doused in the fries. Might have been heavy handed on the sauce, but otherwise, these were good. Fried rice-probably the best dish and most in line with "traditional" fried rice when you're talking Hawaiian food. Spam, onions, garlic, and some umami taste I can't figure out. Oh and a sunny side egg. Pretty decent, but again, heavy handed on the oil. Mochiko chicken-was most excited for this one. But it's really a fusion dish. It's crispy boneless chicken, but waaaay too much sauce poured on it. The bottom was literally all yellowish sweet sauce. Dunno what it is, but this dish would have been awesome if not for the sauce. Mac salad - was okay. Similar in flavor and texture to local style. Fish - hard pass, no bueno. They do a brisk take-out business, which is weird. And it looks like full plates with rice and ish. TLDR - this place is bar first, then pupu style restaurant far second. Patrons younger and having a good time, but most were just drinking and picking on some fries. Don't expect any type of Hawaiian vibe at all.

After going to Hawaii a few times, I am always on the look out for good Hawaiian food back here in the mainland and Unco Frank's hits the spot when you're craving good Hawaiian food! Everything is super flavorful, I couldn't stop eating even after I was full. Unco Frank's was located inside of High Treason Wine Bar (look for the bright Unco Frank's sign in front!) - a cute and intimate wine bar, perfect for date night or a quick bite. My husband and I got a few plates to share - mochiko chicken, Auntie Rob's fried rice, Hawaiian Mac salad and the grilled kalbi. Everything was honestly so good. I liked that you get that island flavor but with their own twist. My favorite has to be the mochiko chicken - it was crispy and saucy and had just the right texture. Service was amazing and I'll definitely be back when I visit SF!

Also, nothing is served with mac salad... The prices are pretty decent for SF. Maybe that's why this place is popular. They are takeout only and have one bench outside for you to eat at if it's free. Tried the garlic shrimp, the moco loco (idk why they swap the words), and the furikake chicken. Also had a spam musubi (when I ordered online for pick up, I couldn't add egg which is usually an option according to the Toast website). The garlic shrimp was missing a flavor that Hawaii has in their garlic shrimp. The color was very red but it was not spicy. They do have an option to make it spicy though. It was bland to me compared to what I'm used to when I visit Hawaii. The moco loco gravy was good, but the beef patty tasted dry and overcooked. They did have a runny egg too but it was oddly underneath the patties, so we broke the eggs while trying to split the beef amongst 3 people. The furikake chicken is probably better if you eat it right away since it's lightly breaded. We took it home so by the time we ate it, it was soggy. The sauce it is cooked in is a little sweet and wasn't too bad. The soggy chicken ruined the texture for me though. Each dish was served with a little bit of cabbage which I liked to get a little greens in the meals. The spam musubi didn't taste like it had any sauce, and they used so much furikake underneath the spam, that it made it taste fishy. Would not recommend. I can't comment on the service much since I ordered online for pickup. The guy who handed me my food after asking my name was nice and polite though. The only reason I'd come back is to try to the shave ice. The group in front of me got 3 for their kids, and it looked tasty. I would not come back for the food, but at least the prices aren't bad for SF standards.

As for the Wings, we got the Pa'ina, Sriracha Honey,Salt and Pepper, Garlic Cilantro, and Spicy Mango. The Pa'ina has Sweet Chili Glaze, but too us was just spicy and didn't really have much flavor beyond that. In comparison, the Sriracha Honey we thought had more flavor besides its heat. The Salt and Pepper was a disappointment. It didn't have much flavor and was actually the least tasty of all of them. It was moist like the rest of them, but wish that the Skin was crispy like you expect Dry Rub Wings to be instead of being soggy. The Garlic Cilantro was a good combination with the Fish Sauce, Cilantro, Garlic, Serrano, and Lime Juice if you like Cilantro. The Spicy Mango was actually no really spicy and had a good Mango flavor to it, not that artificial Mango flavor you get with some things Plus, the Ube Colada was thankfully not too sweet, and was well balanced in Alcohol to drink ratio instead of barely tasting the Alcohol or the Ube. The Lychee-tini was also well balanced in both the Lychee and Alcohol flavor. Overall, great drinks, service, and food. Definitely would come here again and try more yummy food.

I pass this place all the time, but the parking is terrible, so I usually just keep driving. Yesterday I happened to be on foot and finally stopped in. I noticed a PASS inspection sticker in the window (isn't it usually an A? I'll Google that later). It's strictly a food shop. No tables, no décor, nothing fancy. The steamed rice was just a little overcooked but still tasty. The mac salad was decent, though I expected a bit more from what seemed like an authentic spot. Oh and of course, the sauce, so good. My only complaint is they need to pack two sauces in the to go bag, not one. Total came to $10.85, which feels like a steal. It completely satisfied me and definitely beats driving all the way to Chipotle (my usual lunch stop) and spending $15-$18. No photo because I was too hungry and ate it in the car. Made an easy reservation online and was even able to update it the day before to add another person…read morewith no issues, which we really appreciated. We had heard such great things about Hula Hoops and were excited to come for Mother's Day brunch. When we arrived Sunday morning, we were seated right away, which was great. However, our party of six was seated with only three food menus and five drink menus. I asked our waitress if we could get additional menus for the rest of the table, and she explained they had run out and were waiting for other guests to finish with theirs. We ended up asking if there was a QR code version we could scan, and she brought one over. I was mostly confused why the QR code wasn't offered immediately, knowing half the table didn't have menus to begin with. It just made the start of the experience feel a little disorganized. That said, there were definitely some positives. The sparkling cider for Mother's Day brunch was a really nice touch, and the Shanghai lumpia was fantastic. I ordered the two-protein silog breakfast with eggs, and while the flavors were good, the single scoop of rice just didn't feel proportionate to the rest of the plate. Any Filipino knows you need a little more rice to balance everything out, so I ended up not finishing my meal because it felt off portion-wise. My son ordered the cheese omelet and said it wasn't his favorite, especially the potatoes. The ube waffles were really yummy though, and my husband enjoyed the sisig tater tots. Overall, I'm glad we finally got to try Hula Hoops after hearing so many good things, but unfortunately it didn't quite live up to the hype for us, and I don't think we'd return.
