went there for birthday. ordered the best most expensive things on the menu. steak, wrapped shrimp, chicken fajitas. queso dip recommended by the waiter (8 year experience) that should be called "queso DRIP." the "hand made chips" are thin and fall apart. the atmosphere is very NOISY. the service was disappointing. i noticed waiters even had to bus their own tables. hence they were not happy. the food was predictable but ok. the portions are not large. ordered steak medium and came well done. the queso dip is so watered down it just pours. i did question why it was so thin and watery and was told. "we make it by hand in big vats " and blah blah blah. the manager came out and said that is the way it is. no offer to fix it. the stuff runs all over the place and makes a mess on the table. no offer to fix it or clean the table before the main course. i prefer the cheap fake queso at 7-11 compared to this blah. i will not return, too many problems at a very high price. just go to Anitas, half the price and much better. read more

My wife presented me with an Uncle Julio's discount card so we decided that we and another couple would give the restaurant a try for dinner and it has been at least 3 years since our last time there. After entering the restaurant and Identifying ourselves; a young lady at a desk asked us to follow her but then she busied herself with someone else's message on her computer screen. Her derailed train of thought returned to us in a moment and she again asked us to follow her to our table. Once seated with menus; water was brought and one of us asked for sliced lemons to flavor out the water but it never was delivered. My wife and her sister shared a meal which they thought was very good. My meal and that of my sister-in-law's husband were another to write home about. We found the chips good but the hot sauce was just about like ketchup and not very spicy. Our party felt that the food, service, and value for the money spent would have been better at On The Border. I had an horrible experience on Valentine's Day here. The service in the food was good as always however my server was a hot mess. At the end of the meal I paid for my food with cash she asked if I would like change and I said yes. For some reason I misread the check and I assume tip was included because of a line item. So in addition to the tip that was included I left a few singles maybe two or three dollars. She then asked if we were only tipping the two dollars and I said yes this is in addition to the tip that was included in the bill. She then replied "Tip is not included in the bill. I only gets paid two dollars an hour and if you could only afford to tip two dollars then you need it more than I do." With that being said I did not tip her fat ass and I explained the story to the restaurant manager who cut me off in the middle of my story and said "I'm so sorry"!without even hearing the worst part. I explain to him it's not that I didn't want to tip her I was just confused somehow by the bill. When she told me tip was not included in the bill I had every intention on tipping her very well. But then her big mouth talked herself out of a tip. I also explained that I do a lot of dining in DC and they have included a surcharge which includes tip he said to me he understands but that wasn't the case there but really didn't appear sympathetic to my side of the story or the insult that I just received from the waitress. I took my 19 year old daughter here for lunch with a great deal of anticipation. I talked up how amazing everything was when I used to eat here many years ago. Some of that was still true. The service was wonderful. We walked in and were greeted by a host and seated promptly. The smell of fresh tortillas being cooked was in the air. The waitress brought our chips, salsa and took our drink orders very quickly. We were given a lunch menu, and the amazing fajitas that I remembered weren't on it, so I tried the steak fajita bowl. What a disappointment. The beef strips had a processed feel and I honestly couldn't tell if it was supposed to taste Mexican or Asian of some sort. It tasted like the teriyaki strips from a high school cafeteria. Served over horrible mushy overcooked rice. I probably should have said something, but I couldn't figure out how to articulate "Is this how it's supposed to taste?" In a way that wouldn't make me sound Kareny, so I ate the tomatoes out of it and called it a day. Fortunately I had shared the Quesabirria Appetizer, which was delicious and filling. They also make guacamole for you right at the table but since there were only 2 of us we didn't order it, almost every other table around us did order it and it looked delicious but was way too much guacamole for two people! The staff is friendly and the restaurant looks nice. However, the classic Tex-Mex dishes have taken a slow ride down to mediocre. The ground beef taco used to be tasty, but now it's just tasteless, fried ground beef. The cheese and onion enchiladas used to have a nice con carne sauce, but now it's no better than what comes in a can from the grocery store. You get a large helping of Spanish rice, but what used to be delicious beans, are no longer included. When they stopped adding lettuce to the enchiladas, I almost stopped going ... but now, there is no reason to pay high prices, in a very loud restaurant, for Tex-Mex that is no better than Taco Bell. I waitress gave me the impression she really didn't want to be there....zero personality, no smiles and a bit rude. I mentioned to my friend that I was not interested in ordering any more food from here. Friday night and wanted a quick dinner. It was about 5:30PM and we went here and they had tables available inside and outside. They are remodeling and the outside had a fence and tarp covering the fence. But, we choose outside anyway; it was like we had our own private dining room! (at least initially). I ordered chicken fajitas and before I even took a bite I knew it wouldn't be too good. Looked like frozen rotisserie chicken. Didn't have any Mexican flare to the taste honestly. My partner ordered the Guadalajara which included shrimp, steak, and chicken. Steak was tough even though he requested it medium, chicken just as nasty as mine, and the shrimp was decent even though our waiter assumed because they ran out of bacon wrap shrimp that my partner would just eat regular shrimp (no forewarning prior to the food coming out). Our waiter was nice and he could've had a lot of tables but we weren't checked on as much as we normally would at any other restaurant. I went to eat on Saturday at Uncle Julio's. The food was great, the service was excellent and the restaurant was crowded. I drive a large SUV that won't fit in their "free parking" garages so I have to pay to park. I was 5 minutes late getting to my car... which was booted and ticketed... for a first ticket, the "guard" said I had 2 prior warnings... Only once did I have a warning ticket on my SUV. The app you are forced to use doesn't warn you when you get close on time. The app also starts your parking session 3-5 minutes BEFORE you start the Parking session. Uncle Julio's I'd give your restaurant 5+ stars for your food and service... but your parking situation should be -5 stars... I won't be back after a $35.00 ticket for being 5 minutes late... as a matter of fact I'm done with RTC all together after that... and I went there 3-4 times a week. read more

3 Yelp stars= "A-OK" --- and that, I feel, is about right when describing Uncle Julio's. We hadn't been here in years. How many years? Well...you know where Jackson's and the parking garage are? The last time we went to Uncle Julios, that area was just a massive parking lot! So...we were long overdue for a return visit. One thing that always stuck with me about this place is that it's really loud. I'd forgotten just how you feel packed in like sardines due to the extreme closeness of the tables. The set-up reminds me of your typical Manhattan restaurant. In NYC, they have a good excuse for this---real estate is incredibly expensive and space is at a premium. IMO, there is no excuse for Uncle Julio's cramming customers in the place. We had a small wait for a table even though we were there around 5 p.m. This was due in part to the Reston Arts Festival that was still in progress. Once we were seated, it took our waitress a few minutes to get to us and take our drink orders. I decided to try the frozen Margarita with Chambord while my husband had a Dos Equis. I told the waitress I wanted salt on the glass, she even repeated it back to me. Yet when the drink came---no salt. She took it back and got it corrected. That said, this Margarita was good but the Chambord didn't add all that much to it when it came to flavor. I have to agree with other Yelpers---the chips and dip were quite good. The chips are freshly made plus they're thin, crispy and properly salted. The dip was unique---I'm pretty sure I tasted some beans in there along with the tomatoes and heat. For my main course, I got the Chile Relleno dinner while my husband got the Chicken Enchiladas with red sauce. The Chile Relleno dinner comes with 2 Chile Rellenos. IMO, one would have been plenty. These rellenos were huge and overstuffed with Monterey Jack cheese! There was so much cheese that I ended up not eating all of it. For sides, there was a small portion of Mexican rice which was dried out plus a small bowl of beans. Also, as a nice touch, both our dinners came with some lettuce and chopped tomatoes. All in all, good, flavorful Chile Rellenos and decent beans. My husband liked his Chicken Enchiladas even though he said that the red sauce wasn't all that spicy. He surprised himself by eating both of them! When he first saw them, he thought it would be too much food. We both like how freshly made tortillas accompany every meal---that, too, was a nice touch. All in all, a decent enough dining experience. However, we're in no rush to return due to the loud, cramped environment. If the food were truly top notch Mexican cuisine, we could have ignored the dining conditions. However, there are other places to have good Mexican food that have a nicer atmosphere. read more

Came here on a Friday night for dinner. This place was packed. So glad J made reservations. This particular Uncle Julios is in Reston Town Center. The host and hostess were friendly. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating but it does get super packed on weekends. Our server Adam was wonderful. He was friendly, patient, knowledgeable, and attentive. I'm sure he was busy with all the other tables but he kept that smile on his face. Their table side guacamole is awesome. Super fresh and made right in front of you. I love love their complimentary chips and salsa. Super thin, warm, and crisp chips with cool and perfectly spiced salsa. It's a match made in heaven and they will keep bringing you more. Very dangerous, since I always fill up on this starter before my food even arrives. Every time I visit Uncle Julio's I plan on ordering something different but somehow I always end up getting the same thing, Fajitas! They are just so good. Tender meats with freshly made tortillas is just a winning combo. For dessert we decided to try their Chocolate Piñata. It was excellent! Filled with homemade mini churros and fresh fruit. Bar review: I've never seen an episode of Jersey Shore, but I've seen enough parodies and passing references to know when I'm surrounded by wannabes. Seriously, we sat at one end of the bar, looked over, and these people would've been perfect extras. Food review update: Chips and salsa were fine. Faint hint of smokiness in the slightly watery salsa, but nothing offensive. I tried the Herschel's platter. Beef taco al carbon was my favorite item: pillowy flour tortilla wrapped around chewy slices of carne asada. Cheese chile relleno was also good while fresh, if a little plain. Not a good item to take home since the batter becomes soggy quickly. Frijoles a la charra had beans cooked just to edibility, as well as trace bits of bacon and shredded pork. Rice was unappealing. Chicken enchilada was okay, though the meat itself was too dry. Pork tamale was borderline repulsive, the masa had a thick, spongy consistency and the meat in that was also dried out. Pretty ambivalent about the place. They played with the dimmer twice, but the atmosphere remained loud instead of achieving any intimacy they were trying for. I might come back to try the flan, frog legs, or ceviche, but I'm not too enthusiastic about drinking there again. My margaritas were on the weaker end of alcoholic content, and the touch of Grand Marnier was thankfully light. The bartender was difficult to flag down despite it being close to the end of the night, but our waiter was relatively attentive until we paid our bill. I actually enjoy Uncle Julio's because I love their frozen margaritas, and I have always had lovely servers & bartenders. But the food has gone from bad to worse. It's just plain awful. Even the chips on the table aren't as good. Today I had to send back a cup of queso THREE times because it was 1) the wrong type from what I ordered, 2) cold, then 3) still not even warm, yet also very thick & clumpy. Finally I got a bland, though at least somewhat warm and smooth, cup of melted cheese. Though my server was lovely, is no one even checking the quality of the food before serving it?‍ I've had a few meals here over the last year or so and each was worse than the last--all disappointing. I hope they can do something about the food, as I'd love to eat here again (used to be decent years ago); though I can't imagine I'll ever order food here or recommend this place again. Gosh I can't believe its taken me so long to update my review. So I've been coming here for many, many years. In that time the menu has changed and evolved. Some changes for the better, and other changes I wish they hadn't made. Apparently they now take reservations at this location (a plus if you're coming on a Friday or Saturday night). Changes for the better, an expanded selection of salads, I love the cobb salad and taco salad with the fajita chicken the portions are huge and the ingredients taste super fresh. They've also expanded their margarita selection and have tableside guacamole (it looks good if you like guac). The downsides, they used to have a nice ala carte menu where you could order one taco, or a side of beans or rice. I do miss that because sometimes I don't want a full platter of food. Also what happened to the soup of the day?????? I beg of you if a manager or company rep. reads this bring back the black bean soup!!!!!! Or send me a message and tell me how to make it trust me I've tried and failed twice to replicate it. Oh my gosh this was a discovery made last year when my then boyfriend wanted soup and we discovered this gem on the menu. We'd purposely go on Thursdays just to have that heavenly soup! We disovered yesterday they don't have it. I really wanted to sob. The chips and salsa are still excellent, and I still love the frozen margarita and sangria. But that black bean soup, I'm still so sad over that being gone. The parking at RTC is still a challenge depending on the garage you park in. I now generally park in one of the less populated garages so I'm not having to dodge cars or people. My wife and I booked a table on a different app in advance for a Friday night dinner and good thing as this place was jumping at six pm on a Friday night. There were quite a few folks waiting in the bar area and outside the door. Their tortilla making machine is just off the bar area and good to watch for a few minutes if you have to wait. We were promptly seated by the rather indifferent hostess. Things were better once our server dropped by to take our drink order. He was super friendly and took good care of us. The dining room was packed at this time and quite a few families with kids were eating here. Maybe because it is one of the cheaper spots at RTC? The noise level consequently was higher but we could still carry on a conversation without too much trouble. I ordered their tacos carnitas with refried beans. Make sure you specify the type of beans you want as they default to charro beans which are far from my favorite. Their refried beans are awesome as were the tacos. I could only eat two of the three though despite their smaller size. We skipped dessert but have had their sopapillas in the past and loved them. We look forward to returning again. read more

But it is constantly busy, I mean, REALLY busy, so be prepared for that. If the server brings out the wrong entrée, you are in for a wait while they re-fire. This is may not be a place I would go on a Saturday night, but is a great spot for lunch or a swirl after work. Here's why: Pros- -They have outdoor seating -table side guacamole (its extra but they make it to order) -veggie fajitas (can be made vegan if you opt out the sour cream and cheese toppings). Great location in the RTC with outdoor seating! Of course there are those trademark thin and delicately crunchy tortilla chips freshly made. Of course there are the chain's famous sizzling skillets of steak fajitas with onions and peppers. Of course service is quick and attentive-- it's the standard fare I've come to expect from Uncle Julio's. He's everyone's favorite avuncular figure! Uncle Julio's ambience in Reston features brighter decor, closely placed seating and a high ceiling that magnifies music, kitchen noises, and din of customers vying to be heard over the ruckus. I found the Reston location to be particularly loud. So maybe not my best choice for a quiet conversation or first date, but nice for a early dinner after Happy Hour after work--when the margaritas flow and it seems perfectly natural to laugh loudly and raise one's voice above the clamor. There is also outside seating available that is quieter and lovely on the temperate days of fall and spring that overlooks the town center's passing patrons. The atmosphere is bustling and upbeat and IMO a fun--if a bit noisy-- and lighthearted place. My husband prefers carne asada tacos or enchiladas filled with chicken, beef or cheese, but for me there is only one thing I order as an entree-- the mesquite-grilled steak or chicken fajitas. If I had to choose a favorite between the two, it would be the steak! I smell the glorious seared beef and sizzling onions all the way from the kitchen and my tastebuds are just as delighted as my olfactory senses with each lovely bite! I often have leftovers to take home. Honest, I try not to fill up on the tortilla chips, I really do; but they're made with a special machine inside the restaurant and seasoned perfectly (with some secret highly-addictive deliciousness!) Did I mention the service is quick and attentive as is the kitchen. I love that I can duck in and out with table service, real food prepared with fresh ingredients, & a decent cocktail menu and be done in 35 minutes if I choose!
