The food is delicious! We originally planned to take it to go, to eat in the car. But the way it's packaged is more to take home and not to eat in the car. So we decided to eat in the restaurant and so glad we did because I got to try the green habanero chili sauce they had on the tables and it was SPICY and I LOVED it!!! All our previous experiences with Pupusas Express were as dine-in customers. Due to COVID, we decided to do takeout here recently. We figured that they were experienced when it came to doing deliveries as they have been doing them since they opened. We placed 2 orders of our favorite meal "El Tipico Express" which consists of a pupusa, along with curtido and sauce, platanos and a tamal. In addition, we got 2 extra pupusas in order to have them for dinner the next night. The delivery arrived when they said it would---so no complaints there. However, we were very disappointed with the food. While it was edible, the best way to describe it was that there was no love or passion in the cooking. The tamal fell apart once we opened it plus the some of the chicken wasn't shredded but instead left in big pieces. The pupusas were almost burned. The curtido and the sauce were just fine as were the platanos. Given the fraught times we are in, I can understand how things aren't what they should be. Perhaps they were extra busy the night we ordered. Or perhaps (and I can understand this) they are all very stressed due to COVID concerns. Due to the above, we aren't giving up on them. We have, however, decided to not get takeout from them again. What we will do is when things get back to normal (or new normal) we will go back as dine-in customers. Time for a new taste experience! After eating many of the same foods during the pandemic, I wanted to try something different. I had seen signs and the delivery car from Pupusas Express many times and decided that lunch today would be a Pupusas. The restaurant was empty at around noon on a Friday; but they were preparing many take out orders, so I stayed. I ordered two of the shredded pork Pupusas. I stayed and ate at the restaurant which was extremely quiet and also extremely clean. The Pupusas was rather plain but good. I tried some of the sauce that was provided and it clearly added to the taste and kicked it up a few notches. The cabbage/slaw Aldo added to the flavor experience. Let me be clear. I love pupusas. I was the first in my family to uncover the simple goodness of this simple Latino dish. Pupusas Express focuses on doing this one dish really well. This was my first visit, as I usually frequent other Herndon establishments to feed my pupusa addiction. After carefully reviewing the menu, I selected a few Pupusa Revueltas. These are filled with shredded pork, beans and cheese, They were served with a flavorful sauce and fresh slaw. Actually, this delicious slaw had much more punch than what I am used to having. It was a perfectly orchestrated combination and definitely one that will be hard for me to resist. While I couldn't quite detect the cheese in the Pupusa, the combination worked well and was quite delicious. This restaurant has plenty of seating and is an excellent choice for a night when you really don't want to cook. I haven't even scratched the surface of their menu. Judging by the other reviews, I have many more good meals ahead. It is a menu full of both traditional and unique dishes. My only negative would be that the owner should not argue with his drivers in the public area. If his drivers don't want to take a delivery, perhaps they should be working elsewhere. If your food was cold tonight, it's because this particular driver sat around in the parking lot finding reasons not to deliver. Also, the previous comments regarding air conditioning are accurate. It is not cool in this restaurant and the air conditioning does not provide much relief (if there is any AC). This is a solid pupuseria with an interesting menu. This reminded me how great their food is and after looking at my own photo started to get a real craving again! Yep, it had been too long. I ordered the 3 tacos al Carbon de Carne which came with cheese, rice, refried beans, guac, green salsa AND pico de gallo on flour tortilla for $12.50. Everything was really good. The steak did have a few chewy pieces but overall, still pretty great. I also got a pupusa revuelta which is pork/beans and cheese also with the sides of salsa and also, 1 sopes-which is a fried corn tortilla "dish" that holds everything- the chicken, cheese, beans, avocado, etc. I really like their rice here, its buttery and good, with little peas and green beans in it. I've ordered delivery a few times from this place and it's absolutely delicious Salvadoran. If you live nearby, you get free delivery and delivery minimum is $12 which is a steal. The yuca comes chiccharron is delicious and huge portion. The pupusas are all great. I've had the queso and the pork. Sopa de gallina india is delicious and huge. Grilled steak sopes also yummy. The food was tasted so horrible and I can't believe I wasted close to $30 for food that went straight to the trash. I really wanted to like it but from comparing the same dishes from other places, my tastebuds felt like they were jumping off a bridge. The pupusas were bland and tasteless, the pastelitos were dripping in oil from being deep fried but still with zero flavor, nuegados con dulce de panela was burned, bitter, and absolutely disgusting, the sopes was hard as a rock with dry, chew forever steak pieces, and the flan was way below average but "way below average" was the best thing I tried in my order. I came in on my break for a pupusa, it's been way too long since one of these traditional Salvadoran specialties crossed my taste buds. Of you love pupusas, like myself, then you already know that these savory filled thick corn tortillas are served with curtido (a slaw) and salsa. Here the slaw is bright orange with very little flavor. The salsa looks like blended tomatoes and unfortunately, also has very little flavor. I prefer spicy accompaniments. I ordered the bean/cheese and the pork/bean/cheese varieties. No skimping on the filling here. Drinks are served ice cold by the bottle/can and served up by the waitress. If overall, a nice quick meal at a decent price ($2 a pupusa). The waitress was attentive, the restaurant was clean, and parking was easy. I really like this place. Food prices are reasonable and I have a friend who gets food from here all of the time. Tried pupusas for the first time and they were soooooo good!!! Been back twice since the initial visit and they are so good. They can be a little hard to find, but just punch in the address with your GPS and you'll be fine. Its off the main road so it isn't as easy to find or see when driving in the area of the restaurant. In fact, never knew it was there before finding it through DoorDash. But I ended up ordering and picking up instead of delivery. Ordered online and had specific requests like leaving off the cabbage slaw and the sour cream with the plantains. They got it perfectly correct and there were certainly some changes that I made with the order. Highly recommend! It tasted extremely fresh and the sauce is a must. The plantains also came with a generous portion and two dipping sauces, both of which were very tasty. We also tried the pork, bean and cheese pupusa and regular bean and cheese which were super delicious and pretty big as well. The tomato sauce it came with is so bomb and compliments it really well. By then we were pretty full and barely touched our entrees. We tried the steak and chicken sopes and tacos and wish we had enough room to actually finish it. It was my first time trying a sopes it's basically like a deep fried hard shell base with lettuce cheese tomatoes and meat on top, it was pretty different but still good! The tacos were so good too, the way they season their meat is so flavorful and they really don't skimp you on the protein. Warning!! Pupusas Express is my new go-to Mexican place! I got delivery from them today via grubhub for lunch. I got 3 corn tortilla steak tacos, 1 pork and cheese pupusa, and a slice of tres leches cake. Everything was so tasty and filling. I only had the pupusa and 1 taco (and a bite of the cake) for lunch and am very full. Saving the rest for dinner! The tacos come with rice, beans, salsa, and guacamole (which is delicious BTW!) which is a pretty large portion for $12. Definitely ordering from again! read more
