Family was in town and they love Mexican so we ventured here for the second time in probably eight years. Our young server was really attentive and friendly but the food was a mixed bag. The cheese enchilada was flat (literally and taste-wise) and the diners with the cilantro rice found that a strange experience. The bowl with the Mexican rice was the favorite. The others thought their food was good but nothing was noteworthy. We asked if they had spicier salsa and another little bowl was brought out. The server thought we were going to say it was too hot but it really helped punch up the experience for us. If your food is flat maybe request hotter salsa! read more

I ordered takeout dinners to be ready at 5:00 PM. When I arrived at 5:00 PM to pick them up, they weren't ready yet. 15 minutes later, I was told I should go get my car and pull it up in front of the building because I had a large order. I got my car, parked in front of the door with my hazards on, and went back inside to pick up the bags. When I came back outside with the bags, a security guard with a parking boot threatened to lock it on my car. I had been parked there for less than 30 seconds. Uncle Julio's gets one strike for being 15 minutes late on my order. They get two strikes for telling me that I could park in front of their door. And they get three strikes for doing nothing but watch while I had to argue with the security guard. And to top it all off, items were missing from the order. I should have checked the order before I left, but the threatening guard didn't seem like he'd give me much of an opportunity to do so. read more

My friend and I went to Uncle Julio's for her birthday. When we arrived at 5:30, we were seated at a corner table in front of the garbage area. I said I preferred another table--given that there were several others available for two people. They seemed confused about it and finally found another table. For starters we ordered a small guacamole. I've been eating at Mexican restaurants my entire life, but I have never seen such a tiny portion of guacamole. For my entree I had the 2 soft shell taco dinner which was served on a small plate and consisted mostly of lettuce and tomatoes. My friend had the fajitas and seemed pleased with it. We asked for the tab, and waited 15 minutes before we got it. All in all, a big disappointment. Mediocre food and bad service. I won't come back again. Don't waste your money here. read more

I called the number on my delivery confirmation and was left on hold for 22 minutes while they looked for a manager. I finally hung and tried to call again. This time I got stuck in a loop of "thank you for continuing to hold" voice messages and no human contact at all. It was EXTREMELY frustrating to pay for an item that I did not receive and have no way to contact them to get this resolved. There's really no reason to place the tables like this, and there were plenty of empty tables. The house guacamole is a bit embarrassing for a sit-down Mexican restaurant. The avocado is like a puree, the pieces of onion were huge, and it just overall didn't have much flavor. If I'm going to a Mexican restaurant, I expect food that is at least comparable to something I can make myself. If you are wanting a sit down Tex-Mex restaurant in Reston, Uncle Julio's is a good choice. We were sat by the big bag windows, so we had a great people watching spot. They also have outdoor seating as well. I had the margarita of the month- the blueberry margarita. It was good, and had lots of pieces of blueberry in it. I also had the two steak tacos. The star of the plate was definitely the beans, they were so good. The meat could have used a little more flavor but was still good. The service was pretty average compared to restaurants around. They completely ruined my mother-in-laws birthday! She loves fried tacos and instead of fried tacos we got burnt greasy tortillas that were inedible. They remade the tacos for us but they still came out awful. They swore the tortillas were corn hit they tasted like flour tortillas and had the same flakiness ad a flour tortilla. We just had these at the loudoun location which was wonderful but the Reston location was awful. The grease also tasted old and really impacted the flavor. This is a great family spot, especially to kick back at the end of a long week. If you haven't heard about or experienced Uncle Julio's Taco Tuesday, you are missing out! They have a "taco bar" for $12/person. It is basically a mini taco bar brought to your table on a lazy susan so it rotates around the whole table. The only thing I don't like about this is that the tables in the bar area are wayyyyyyyyyyy too small for such a masterpiece. Its a struggle to really enjoy a good happy hour in the bar area with this dish. Three of us from my job frequent this place and we really need the large 6 person table in the bar area to accommodate all of the plates, drinks, chips, salsa, and of course the taco bar itself. Uncle Julio's always delivers fresh food and great service! The guac, sizzling fajitas, and sangria are always on point. The restaurant is Covid-19 compliant and takes precautionary measures as the tables outside are 6 feet apart and you can access the menu via QR code on your phone. While the Tableside Guac is pricey at $14 and not quite tableside as it's prepared in the back, it's worth every penny as it's fresh and made-to-order. Just by the color, you can definitely tell the difference between the soggy sad looking regular guac at half the price at $7, and the premium tableside guac all bright and fresh. The guac pair well with the salty chips and balances the saltiness. The sizzling Veggie fajitas were bursting with flavor with a full portobello mushroom, squash, peppers, and onions. The flour tortillas were soft and pipping hot. The cheddar cheese, pico de gallo, and sour cream rounded out the meal and was fully equipped with DIY delicious fajitas! The Sangria was quite tasty and not too sweet. It would have been nice if there was some fruit! The server was super nice and gave us half a dozen extra tortillas pipping hot right off the grill! If I could leave zero stars I would. We sat outside on the patio which was not crowded at all. All the servers looked miserable. Took 10 mins to get salsa and chips which tasted like burnt oil, we asked for different chips and the runner did willingly give us new chips. Why are the chips getting smaller every time we come? She didn't know what Hornito's tequila was. Which would be fine but then recommend about one you have. But she didn't. Oh and I had to take our silverware off another table for the all 4 of us. No one cared about us at all. After we ate we waiting another 15 mins, no one offered dessert or anything. I came to Uncle Julio's tonight with some coworkers for happy hour and was extremely disappointed in the service of the staff. Our server, Karen, seemed very annoyed or sour with our group all night, taking menus early, taking food early, and lacking basic hospitality I've come to expect coming here many times before. Our queso and guacamole took way too long to come to our table and when they did, the queso was cold and watery. I asked for more menus for the table, was told no, I asked for a dessert menu, never received one, and Karen hovered over me and my coworker when we were completing our respective portions of the bill, which felt very awkward as I felt compelled to tip more than she deserved. As a former West Coaster, I had never heard of or been to an Uncle Julio's before. I came here with my 5-yo son and some friends who had been here and sang praises about the chain. We were seated almost immediately and were served chips and salsa. The waitress was nice enough but talked my friends into a huge guacamole dish that was really meant for more than the two of us eating it. My son wanted shrimp, and it wasn't an option on the kids menu, so I asked what I could order (from the several shrimp items) that wasn't spicy. The waitress asked the manager, who told me that they could only make one of the most expensive dishes (without the spice) on the menu! It cost literally more than double what I ordered (two taco plate). I went ahead with it, because my kiddo's heart was set on shrimp, but I was flabbergasted that they wouldn't just serve us plain shrimp and charge us a decent price. The taco plate with rice and beans was meh. Nothing particularly exciting about it. I'm glad I filled up on chips and salsa first.
