Our server was excellent, and 4 of the 5 in our party said their food was good (3 fajitas orders and one salad). Unfortunately the cheese enchiladas were barely served at room temperature. The temperature of enchiladas was never a problem previously...I should have sent them back to be heated properly but didn't want to disrupt the others in our party. Just awful today. Nothing except getting seated quickly went right. Waited 35 to 40 minutes for our food. When the food arrived, it wasn't even correct. Just ate here for the first time in a year and I can't help but be pretty disappointed. The service was still fantastic along with the bar drinks and the decor. The food however, was a major let down. Right from the get go both of the salsas had almost a metal or aluminum type taste which killed it for me and I'm a salsa connoisseur. The filet fajitas are no longer on the menu which is what we had always came here for. We settled for skirt steak fajitas and they too were disappointing. This used to be our go to high end Mexican food, but unfortunately we probably won't be back because whoever changed the menu and food quality completely failed this company. I actually like this spot. Right off of a busy highway and parking can suck at times. Especially at the end of the week or weekend. Get's packed quick so make a reservation. Nonetheless, the food is really good! Drinks are even better. Service last I went was good as well. Definitely has the Tex-mex feel but nothing wrong with that. Last time I went though I did have a roach run under my plate at the bar top and a patron killed it as it came by him. Very disappointed with the service. Our server was an older gentlemen who was not welcoming or helpful, which usually does not bother me. One issue of the restaurant however was that there was numerous flies flying around our table/area, even though we were sitting inside. Throughout the whole meal we were constantly swatting away flies from our table which was very annoying. I know the waiter can not control the amount of flies in his station so that is not a slight to him but more the restaurant in general. However I had an issue with the waiter when I noticed there was a fly in our ground beef bowl so I flagged our waiter over and showed it to him. He did not say anything about it, no apology or offer for compensation or anything the entire meal, just took the ground beef back to the kitchen with him. He did not check in on our meal the entire time, asking us how we were doing or to apologize about the fly being in our food which kind of struck me as crazy. Only came by later on to drop our check off as if nothing had happened. The food itself was fine but our appetites were severely dampened by the fly being in our food and flys constantly flying around over the rest of our food the entire meal. I went here for the first time probably in over seven years. I knew it had changed names again because I noticed the logo had changed. I knew the original creator of uncle Julio's worked for Papasito's and pretty much stole their recipes and created uncle Julio's. That's why the chips and the hot sauce was always the same and pretty much the same menu, but I was surprised the menu has changed. They now have three different sauces which the waitress only brought us two and then I asked for the habanero one because she didn't like it because it was too hot for her. We got there at 11 o'clock right when they open and I would have to say I was watching their staff coming in the door because I got there like five minutes before they opened up and I was surprised about that because usually when you work at a restaurant, you might wanna have that morning meeting with the management before you start so you know what's available and what's not. I don't think the management really knows what they're doing yet and supposedly I was told that was the training facilities on Camp Bowie I don't know you tell me. No Twin Peaks over by Hulen mall is the training facilities for all Twin Peaks all over the country so surprise me that one would be the same. So we ordered the steak fajitas, but we had to get the dinner portions since they don't have a lunch portion and I also had to go cauliflower ball, which my wife is a vegetarian that I brought home to her which she truly loved. And that is one of the reasons that I gave it a three my wife loved their food. We had a ship to cook a little bit more because I'm not a Woody Harrelson just knock off the horns and give it a quick sizzle on each side, too bloody for me. And for $51 for lunch just for that I thought that was a little ridiculous and I'm not saying that they were scrimping on serving you good portions because we had a to go container. Now I did ask about their Baja tacos what are they made with? I'm always thinking Baja tacos is redfish. I certainly didn't want it to be tilapia, but it's cod and also asked if you can get it blackened instead of fried, which I guess you can't, but the waitress had to go ask the chef in the back, what type of fish and if they can grill it instead of fry it and that's one of those management things that I was talking about. The manager did come by and asked how our food was. She didn't really take the time to see how it was because I would've told her how it was really, but she did her routine by checking on the tables. The new ambiance is pretty plain. They used to have live plants in there which are gone and just a pretty much stale white interior with the same old table and chairs. I have been a customer at this Uncle Julio's for well over 20 years gatherings, birthdays etc etc and my Go to for most pre events in Fort Worth and over time the attitudes and character of the bartenders have changed in a negative way. We went in the have dinner and watch a little football on Saturday evening and sat at the bar as I've always done. I have noticed the last several times I have been here that attitudes and moods these bartenders have is consistent which is starting to sadly want to make me visit less and less not feeling good the entire visit. There's no smiles the entire time from greet to end. Asking for anything seems irritable to them. All I can say is if you hate your job and there's one gentlemen that works the bar most weekends that seems as so and his attitude reflects on all the customers who sit at the bar. The food and drink changes are also iffy and not like the old school restaurant we all knew and loved. It's ALL CHANGED sadly!!!! Many agree!! You guys need to do better. It's hard enough with the economy and going to dinner, paying the rising costs of dinner with friends or family the experience should be pleasant and it's just not. The more this happens the less customers will continue to come back. Somewhere near the top of the food chain of the Gringoest of Gringo Tex-Mex places sits Uncle Julios. The tag line on the building says "Fine Mexican Food", but make no mistake, the cuisine and customer base here are All-American. This review will take the form of a U-Turn. On the way to Uncle Julio's my prior mediocre experiences, underscored by a general sense of meh about Tex-Mex food and ambiance caused me to anticipate another "whatev" eval. I've eaten at several Tex-Mex places recently, none of which I've personally chosen to visit, i.e. someone else's gathering, my sig-o wants a Margarita, etc. So, my internal eye-roll was in full force as we drove across town to the badlands of meh, Camp Bowie, during which I coined the nickname Uncle Hurl-ios, which I was rather proud of (I'm a horrible human being, I know). But, gotta admit, Siri's mispronunciation, uncle Jewel-io's is more accurate! We were meeting that group of high school friends for which the best preparation is pre-drinking. We arrived at the bar around 6:20 (just over 90 minutes early) to get the evening started. Zac the bartender took care of us. We started with a Reverse Swirl margarita (it has Everclear in it) and a Spicy Margarita, both of which were very tasty and created the Tequila experience we sought. She liked the spicy so much she ordered a second one with muddled pineapple. Zac let us sample the pre-mixed spicy base and it was potent in equal parts with a citrus bite on the front and a spicy tingle on the finish. We were impressed with the professional ease with which the bar staff worked. The chips come warm with a salsa blended with roasted veggies, bringing a robust smoky flavor and dark red color. At the table, our group was large and loud. The server was a bit overwhelmed or nervous, maybe. But, orders came quickly enough, including a cake that someone had brought from outside. We didn't order after our pre-drinking bonanza. But, for those who did the dishes were hot and pleasingly Tex-Mexy. I've found a place in my foodie pantheon for Uncle Julio's. I would recommend it's fine Mexican food for any Tex Mex fan, especialy those who like a Fort Worth vibe (t-shirts, beards, tats, and boots). My only caveat is that on a busy night its quite loud. Loved this place. Took my wife for valentines for our favorite dishes to find out they were removed. The waitress informed us it was removed to replace with dishes to attract a vegan/ hipster crowd. One those people don't need to be in a Mexican restaurant anyways. Two if you want to attract them just change the sign to non binary relatives Latin X cuisine. On a recommendation from a local, this spot was also open for dining inside or the patio; whilst still offering take out. Adhering to all precautions, made to wait outside, 6 feet apart to be seated. Once inside the dining room, appropriated tables for seating and other blocked off. Staff Attendent could be seen sanitizing tables as diners left. All staff wore masks and gloves and seemed pretty stoked to be back making money. Limited menu and perhaps that was just lunch? Either way, both Dad and I had the fish tacos; one order of 2, one of 3. Served with rice and black beans. I've died and gone to heaven. Perhaps THEE best fish tacos I've ever had- ever! Nice squeeze of lime was all I needed. All washed done with a couple Tecatés and Pops never empty Ice tea. Pleasant staff, priced fairly. Okay so there's no question that Uncle Julio's is B level tex mex. They do good fajitas and good chips and salsa, but that's about it, I think. I ordered it to go tonight. A small queso (pictured) was $8. That's nuts. I did not expect it to be that small. Refried beans were pretty awful. No need for that much lard or meat fat ever. The pint of salsa for $5 was a good deal, and the chips were decent. The steak taco was good too. Just mediocre over all and I'd suggest Mi Cocina for quality and value instead. The cornerstone dish for any Tex Mex place is cheese enchiladas. I was in the area and came in for lunch. It's been a few years since I've been in a uncle Julio's and probably won't return. So got a cheese enchilada platter. The real issue is that they don't have the usual chili gravy or chili con carne, but what they call beef sauce. Instead of the hearty satisfying gravy, the enchiladas are covered in a watery thin sauce. It's not a New Mexican red Chile sauce either. It's like coffee. Just terrible. You shouldn't have to "go to the bar" to pick up food. The host could help with pickup orders since they refuse to bring it out to your car like other places. But I did (won't do it again.) They brought out a big box. I'm short so I had to hold the big box above my head because the tables are crammed in the bar area and I didn't want to bump into anyone. I approached the host area to exit the two doors. He (the host) saw me coming with my hands full but didn't have the courtesy to open the doors. Uncle Julio's is a beloved Fort Worth establishment, and has been in this location since the 1990s. Whenever I visit Fort Worth, it USED to be a MUST for Mexican food, but over the years even the most beloved of food or places can grow old, tired and boring. To be honest, by the 2010s, Uncle Julios had become just that to me. Despite this TexMex Mecca being my best friend, Lori's favorite place to eat (I mean she would eat here up to 3 times a week, ever day if she could) I got to a point where I refused to even set foot in the door, much to her chagrin. I didn't want the same-ole-same-ole Mexican food any more. If I had to go back, I would begrudgingly go, remembering their homemade tortillas, and for this Fort Worth native, and gringo who lived in Mexico for several years, I am a self-admitted Mexican food snob (and if any one knows where I can find a restaurant that serves authentic Chiles en nogada in the DFW area, please message me!) When we arrived, the ambiance was different, so was the feel of the place. This was not UJs from 2010 any more. The only thing that was the same, was it was still PACKED, and packed full of Gringos. Now one thing I want to point out, this location is in the heart of GRINGO Fort Worth. Some of the most wealthy families and neighborhoods and schools boarder this location on Camp Bowie. So if you are expecting the barrio, head to Hemphill Blvd just south of downtown past the Medical District, or the Northside, and you will feel quite at home. In fact, some of the best authentic Mexican restaurants are in those areas. But if you come to Arlington Heights, don't expect to be welcomed by an "El Grito shout." In fact someone wrote "this is the Gringoest of Gringo TexMex restaurant." What nonsense. Have they been to an El Fenix? Joe T. Garcia's? Pancho's MEXICAN BUFFET (Buffet says it all), A Taco Bell? Obviously, that person does not have the slightest clue what my people think of as Mexican food - even my Texas people...but I digress. We sit and a handsome, young Gringo man (who quickly found out was named Brice or Bryce - DO NOT JUDGE) comes to the table, and I am thinking to myself, OK, here we go. Here comes the thick Texas Accent and a "HI Y'ALL can I get y'all started with some Iced Tea, our Margarita Swirls, or some shots of tequila!?"But no. He walks up to the table and politely says, "My name is Brice (I am sticking with that spelling) and just wanted to thank you for coming to Uncle Julios. I also wanted to let you know that it will be my honor and privilege to serve you tonight." The table stops speaking. We all three look at each other then unanimously look back at back at Brice. Silence. "I am going to let you look over the drink menu, and be back momentarily to find out what I can get for you." Definitely NOT Uncle Julio's from the 2010s! I have never experienced a server in FtWorth, much less Texas, like we experienced with Brice. He met our every need and wish before we thought to ask, and he answered every question before we asked it. When I needed or wanted something, it was already there or I would look up and he was standing over me with it. We all experienced the same service. This young man was beyond the pale perfection In knowing the art of serving a customer. I was gobsmacked as I watched him throughout dinner, wondering when something would lag. It never did. The food we ordered was way beyond what I remembered. Of course being Texan, we had to order a bowl if Queso as an appetizer, and it still sits up there with their tortillas as being some of the best in the city. It's ooie-gooey, salsa-and-melted-cheese flavor allowed each of us in unison to mumble in delight: "GOD THIS QUESO WAS WORTH THE TRIP BY ITSELF!" from our Queso-and-chips, (and for me) Queso-and-tortilla-packed mouths. For the main course, the sour cream chicken enchiladas I raved were still there, but the new chef had adjusted the sauce and spices in the chicken to make them even better than I remembered. Lori ordered the Chicken Tortilla Bowl which was exquisite, and my father ordered the Street Tacos, which while bigger than traditional Mexican street tacos, were just as good and perfectly made as the finest in Mexico. I grew up eating at Uncle Julio's and they used to be really good. They have severely gone downhill. 1. They don't have nachos. Apparently changed their menu during Covid. But why not serve nachos. They have all the ingredients, cheap to make and can charge a good price. Lots of profit margin. 2. Tortillas were very thick, oddly shaped, and small. 3. Fajitas (chicken and beef) didn't have the same flavor as in the past. 4. I guess they no longer have the Mexican butter, asked for it and was brought just melted butter. 5. Lack luster service. The recipe to my favorite EL JEFE margarita which has rescued me from rough times is no longer the same. Food flavor is gone. Uncle Julio's has LOST a regular. At first it was the service that was bad, but now my favorite drink and the food flavor is gone. Since my drink is no longer available I will not be returning. I ordered fish tacos and they were so over cooked that I had to look twice to make sure it was fish and not chicken because it had no flavor. I would hope that chicken would have a good seasoning too but it was more that the texture of the fish was off. Hubby and I came for lunch, recommended by a customer in Spec's. We had chicken, steak and bacon wrapped shrimp fajitas, two crispy beef tacos, and queso with ground beef. Since it was the first time there, we decided to try the corn and flour tortillas. 1. Roasted salsa was very good. 2. Queso good but could have been a bit warmer. 3. Crunchy beef tacos-the meat was seasoned very well, shells were nice and crunchy, tomato and lettuce very fresh. 4. Fajitas-the shrimp was slightly over cooked. The beef and chicken had a great flavor. The onions could have been cooked a bit more but were good anyway. 5. Flour tortillas were wonderful! 6. Corn tortillas were from a grocery store bag and NOT good. I was really disappointed in those. It's so hard to find a restaurant that makes scratch made corn tortillas. Would we come back? Yeah, if we were nearby, but I wouldn't drive just to eat there. There are other options. We are still looking for a really good non-chain, full service Mexican restaurant. read more

They had tons of Flys and Nats in the restaurant. The AC dont work. So it's hot. You don't get rice and beans with your food now. Unless you request it now. Arrived at location to try their advertised Barbacoa and were seated and confronted by Miguel our waiter who was Very cold in the beginning but mellowed out. I ordered the Barbacoa and discover it was not Barbacoa. The tortillas were stuck together as if pulled out of a bag and heated in microwave. Horrible as it may seem I ordered a Bloody Mary with a salted rim and got a drink with salt all down one side of glass which meant you'd have salt all over you hand. Miguel was very nice and took my order off my ticket. The Assistance General Mgr. came over and told me it was Uncle Julio's version of Barbacoa but it was actually CHUCK ROAST. This place is horrible. If you make a reservation, they seat you late. Other times you wait in line while they cancel your reservation because the asst. manager can't manage the crowd in the front of the restaurant. Someone with a minimal skill set would not cancel a reservation without asking if the party was stuck in log jam that he created. If you are in the area try Mi Cocina, Gloria's or even Taco Bell will better dinning experience. Would give this 0 stars if possible as the only solution the asst. manager could figure out was to wait 45 min for the next available table. read more
