Not a bad spot for Tex-mex. The ability to make an online reservation was the real mvp. The older I get, the less I like to wait to be seated. The menu was a decent size. There were a few items for pescatarians and vegetarians and the margarita portion of the menu is just as big as the fajita side of the menu. The customer service wasn't exceptional, but it wasn't bad either. Don't expect anyone to go out of their way to be friendly, they are more focused on getting the job done and that's A-OK with me. Drinks could've used a bit more muscle to them. It was too heavy on the lime juice. Let the manager know and they not only appeared empathetic, he comped the El jefe and tried the Tres Amigos. That too was heavy lime flavored. The margarita mix was just off and over powered the alcohol sadly. The food was amazing!!! The vibe was busy but family friendly. It was sports games on, so the environment was right up my alley. Hope they get those drinks back up to par. Definitely would've been a five star had they been. But outside the drinks, it was a good time. If this location is busy, be prepared to wait for seating and you're server. Eating at Uncle Julio's in this day and age is MUCH more different than eating at my beloved Uncle Julio's from the past. And I mean everything. Gone are our favorite menu items and drinks. Gone are the correct items being delivered to our table. I've dined at this location for birthdays, wedding receptions, pre Stock Show for over 20+ years. This is a whole new restaurant. It wouldn't be bad if they charged for what they served. This used to be a premium Mexican texmex restaurant. After the new menu, the food here has become subpar and that is being generous. We used to escape to Uncle Julio's, Papasitos, etc to get fine texmex. I have news for you, management....Papa's is now destroying you on the food game. No if and buts. First time coming here and it was really good. We got seated quick and had someone being us waters and chips and salsa immediately. The salsa is a little watery but flavor is good. I had the swirl frozen margarita to drink which tasted great and the enchilada combo because I couldn't choose. One was ground beef with a quesosauce one was chicken with a green Chile sauce both tasted great. The rice and beans were fresh too. This was my very first time to ever eat here, and the place did not disappoint. The cigar shop owner was celebrating his birthday and wanted to eat here with his staff and close personal friends. The restaurant was packed. In spite of the busyness and the large tabletop we had, the wait time wasn't that bad. From start to finish, the whole process was very efficient. The waiter was very professional and was on his game. I had the three cheese enchiladas, and they were delicious. Uncle Julio's has been around for a long time! I have been here many times over the years. It is a casual place with inside and outside seating and a bar with great drinks. The staff all work hard. We went to eat with friends on a Friday afternoon. At 5PM the place was busy! The staff were trying to keep up but ultimately were too swamped. They could have used more bodies and management should have applied some direction to their efforts. The manager (?) stopped by and was nice. One of the kids was having a birthday and she made it special for her with the chocolate piñata. It is very loud there which is not my thing--- I knew that going in though. The majority of the food was sub par which caught me off guard. I got beef tacos which were stacked high but tasteless. My wife got the barbacoa tacos, and they were so greasy! Barbacoa is pretty greasy to begin with but it was overcooked and the grease just hung in it. The soft taco shells were prepared in a way that made them greasy and unappealing. No cilantro or onion, just lettuce and jalapeños on the tacos. We had the Honey Habanero Wrapped Shrimp with our meal and they were pretty good but lacked the kick of habanero. Overall I was not impressed with this visit. My experience was equal to that of Mexican Inn or other economy chain food place. The price was not equal however--. Pretty expensive for the experience we got. I will probably end up going here again but I think this place needs to refocus on quality and efficiency. read more

We went yesterday (Memorial Day) and it was a big disappointment. The carne sada was not the same as a year ago. It must be under new mgmt. The steak seemed to be a different cut of meat and did not taste anything like it used to be. The portion is half of what it was before and the shrimp were very small and dried out. We have visited here multiple times and have always had a great experience. The staff works hard and keeps the inside looking clean and ready for guests. Last time we enjoyed sitting on the patio. I ordered the poblano stuffed with crab and shrimp I asked if it was fried in peanut oil. The server said no,however my food was never delivered. The server finally came back and I asked where is my food? She said you never got it? Clearly my place was empty why would ask for my food it if had been delivered??? Given the prices they. Been coming here for years! The atmosphere, servers, cooks, managers, & hostesses are fantastic. They new changes below for the menu suck! Rice-- This new rice is not Mexican rice if I want the fluffy stuff with no favor I would have went some where else! Shrimp--New seasoning added has very little flavor. If you get the habanero then you taste the spices. Plus they are being over cooked it's like eating rubber! Chips-- The new oil give the chips a taste of being old and over cooked. Please go back to the old way! Cajeta-- So glad it's back!! However, give the customer the option of having toffee on it! It's killed the original sweet satisfying taste. It has been a few years since we have been here. Some things have changed, mainly the menu. The number of offering seem reduced but they are more tailored to a higher quality presentation. We dined on traditional Tex-Mex food this time. Tex-Mex Combo and Combination Enchiladas including a small complementary Queso since they moved us after we ordered to accommodate a larger group. The facility is clean and well managed. The staff are very nice. Our only reservation is we place this in the Yankee Tex-Mex category. The spice levels will not offend anyone. Delicious! We love coming to Uncle Julio's, great family restaurant or perfect spot for celebrating a birthday or anniversary, it's even great for a date night. Everything we've ever had is so delicious, but we stick with the Guadalajara, steak & chicken fajitas with bacon wrapped shrimp and melted Mexican butter. So yummy! The environment and staff were nice but unfortunately the food and drinks did not make the cut especially for the price. We got two drinks around $15 each and they weren't very good. I got a chicken and cheese enchilada plate and my bf got the carne asada. The enchilada plate was just not very good, sauce wasn't special and just boring. I made a reservation for 20 people 2 weeks in advance, when we arrived they didn't have our reservation. I had to show my call history to prove I called them and the manager seemed to still blame us for the restaurants mistake. We were initially told the best they can do is sit us outside(103 degrees outside). The manager showed zero accountability and seemed like he couldn't care less about us. We finally got 2 tables next to each other but never heard a sorry or anything for the inconvenience. Somewhere near the top of the food chain of the Gringoest of Gringo Tex-Mex places sits Uncle Julios. The tag line on the building says "Fine Mexican Food", but make no mistake, the cuisine and customer base here are All-American. This review will take the form of a U-Turn. On the way to Uncle Julio's my prior mediocre experiences, underscored by a general sense of meh about Tex-Mex food and ambiance caused me to anticipate another "whatev" eval. I've eaten at several Tex-Mex places recently, none of which I've personally chosen to visit, i.e. someone else's gathering, my sig-o wants a Margarita, etc. So, my internal eye-roll was in full force as we drove across town to the badlands of meh, Camp Bowie, during which I coined the nickname Uncle Hurl-ios, which I was rather proud of (I'm a horrible human being, I know). But, gotta admit, Siri's mispronunciation, uncle Jewel-io's is more accurate! We were meeting that group of high school friends for which the best preparation is pre-drinking. We arrived at the bar around 6:20 (just over 90 minutes early) to get the evening started. Zac the bartender took care of us. We started with a Reverse Swirl margarita (it has Everclear in it) and a Spicy Margarita, both of which were very tasty and created the Tequila experience we sought. She liked the spicy so much she ordered a second one with muddled pineapple. Zac let us sample the pre-mixed spicy base and it was potent in equal parts with a citrus bite on the front and a spicy tingle on the finish. We were impressed with the professional ease with which the bar staff worked. The chips come warm with a salsa blended with roasted veggies, bringing a robust smoky flavor and dark red color. At the table, our group was large and loud. The server was a bit overwhelmed or nervous, maybe. But, orders came quickly enough, including a cake that someone had brought from outside. We didn't order after our pre-drinking bonanza. But, for those who did the dishes were hot and pleasingly Tex-Mexy. I've found a place in my foodie pantheon for Uncle Julio's. I would recommend it's fine Mexican food for any Tex Mex fan, especialy those who like a Fort Worth vibe (t-shirts, beards, tats, and boots). My only caveat is that on a busy night its quite loud. I love Uncle Julio's, don't get me wrong. But I just had a to go experience which has changed my mind. Checked in curbside and after waiting 20 minutes, ten minutes after my order was to be ready, I went inside. My order, of course, was ready. Fine. I can go in. But what was the irritating bit was the value for money. We know that Julio's is expensive but geez. When I spend $50 for a meal and an appetizer, could I get more than 1/3 cup of salsa? It's cheap, Julio. And when I order a $9 cup of queso, could I please have more than 15 chips? They're cheap too! I think I'm done with Julio's to go. And of course, since they never acknowledged my arrival in the text, I didn't get the promised survey nor respond when I asked for one. They were smart there. read more

A small queso (pictured) was $8. That's nuts. I did not expect it to be that small. Refried beans were pretty awful. No need for that much lard or meat fat ever. I actually like this spot. Right off of a busy highway and parking can suck at times. Especially at the end of the week or weekend. Get's packed quick so make a reservation. Nonetheless, the food is really good! Drinks are even better. Service last I went was good as well. Definitely has the Tex-mex feel but nothing wrong with that. Last time I went though I did have a roach run under my plate at the bar top and a patron killed it as it came by him. Not much of fan of roaches around my food when I eat because then I start to think "Is it really clean here?" or "do they really clean after the day ends?". Once inside the dining room, appropriated tables for seating and other blocked off. Staff Attendent could be seen sanitizing tables as diners left. All staff wore masks and gloves and seemed pretty stoked to be back making money. Limited menu and perhaps that was just lunch? Just ate here for the first time in a year and I can't help but be pretty disappointed. The service was still fantastic along with the bar drinks and the decor. The food however, was a major let down. Right from the get go both of the salsas had almost a metal or aluminum type taste which killed it for me and I'm a salsa connoisseur. The filet fajitas are no longer on the menu which is what we had always came here for. We settled for skirt steak fajitas and they too were disappointing. This used to be our go to high end Mexican food, but unfortunately we probably won't be back because whoever changed the menu and food quality completely failed this company. I went here for the first time probably in over seven years. I knew it had changed names again because I noticed the logo had changed. I knew the original creator of uncle Julio's worked for Papasito's and pretty much stole their recipes and created uncle Julio's. That's why the chips and the hot sauce was always the same and pretty much the same menu, but I was surprised the menu has changed. They now have three different sauces which the waitress only brought us two and then I asked for the habanero one because she didn't like it because it was too hot for her. We got there at 11 o'clock right when they open and I would have to say I was watching their staff coming in the door because I got there like five minutes before they opened up and I was surprised about that because usually when you work at a restaurant, you might wanna have that morning meeting with the management before you start so you know what's available and what's not. I don't think the management really knows what they're doing yet and supposedly I was told that was the training facilities on Camp Bowie I don't know you tell me. No Twin Peaks over by Hulen mall is the training facilities for all Twin Peaks all over the country so surprise me that one would be the same. So we ordered the steak fajitas, but we had to get the dinner portions since they don't have a lunch portion and I also had to go cauliflower ball, which my wife is a vegetarian that I brought home to her which she truly loved. And that is one of the reasons that I gave it a three my wife loved their food. We had a ship to cook a little bit more because I'm not a Woody Harrelson just knock off the horns and give it a quick sizzle on each side, too bloody for me. And for $51 for lunch just for that I thought that was a little ridiculous and I'm not saying that they were scrimping on serving you good portions because we had a to go container. Now I did ask about their Baja tacos what are they made with? I'm always thinking Baja tacos is redfish. I certainly didn't want it to be tilapia, but it's cod and also asked if you can get it blackened instead of fried, which I guess you can't, but the waitress had to go ask the chef in the back, what type of fish and if they can grill it instead of fry it and that's one of those management things that I was talking about. The manager did come by and asked how our food was. She didn't really take the time to see how it was because I would've told her how it was really, but she did her routine by checking on the tables. The new ambiance is pretty plain. They used to have live plants in there which are gone and just a pretty much stale white interior with the same old table and chairs. I think that they've had forever. So with all the new restaurants that are coming out and all the new little Mexican hole in the walls and trailers everywhere or food trucks, I honestly think that restaurants will slowly disappear because I think you can get a better quality food from a food truck basically stakes because their reputation is in it . read more
