I'm sad to say this is the worst Chinese food I have ever had. I decided to order Uncle Chen's since it was significantly cheaper than Golden Ladle or Fuji & Jade (where I get my usual fix). However cheaper definitely isn't better. I ordered Ma Po tofu, which is my go to dish, and it was just so bland! Tofu tastes like whatever you cook it in, so if it is not in a good sauce, it basically tastes like nothing. So tofu + white rice with a boring sauce = not very satisfying. The portion was huge, and the delivery was fast, so if you want a lot of fast cheap food, this is the place. However if you're looking for a delicious meal.. Do not go here. We had a small mixup with the phone number used to let us know that the food was here and he threatened to call the police on us. If you've taken the time to go on the internet and research a Chinese Food place that is famous for being quick, cheap, and caters primarily to the college crowd, you probably are skeptical about the quality at about Uncle Chens. I was skeptical, and decided to find out for myself whether or not Uncle Chens really is a good value. I recently ordered the General Tso's dinner special late after work and picked up the order on my way home. My order took about 10 minutes to prepare and was ready and waiting for me when I arrived at Uncle Chens. My order cost around $8 with tax which is very reasonable since most places back home seem to charge $10 and up for dinner specials. The dinner special came with a vegetable egg roll and a fortune cookie, which is about standard for any chinese takeout place. Chen's is famous for offering huge portions and with my order they did not disappoint. The takeout container was absolutely bursting with rice and general tso's, and seemed to be almost double what a normal portion would be at Chinese restaraunt. Since I am not a fan of reheating leftover chinese food I made a valiant effort at finishing the entire meal but came up short in the end...Chen's won. With Chen's you definitely get value with the dinner special, there is no argueing that. As far as the quality is concerned, Chen's is just as good if not better than your average Chinese takeout shop. In order to have delicious General Tso's you need two things: crispy chicken and flavorful sauce. I am happy to say that Chen's delivered in both categories. The chicken was extremely crispy, even after being covered in a plethora of sauce and sitting 15 minutes during my drive home. The sauce, which I had ordered in extra spicey, was very flavorful and actually pretty spicey. Ultimately, if you were to ask me if Chen's was the best Chinese food I ever ate, I would have to say "Nope". But, if you were to ask me if Chen's was the best chinese food that I ever ate that cost less than $8 and was ordered after 11pm, the answer would be a resounding YES....and honestly, I think that's the whole point of Uncle Chen's. read more

It's all about managing expectations. By that I mean it's cheap Chinese food. Anybody who complains about the food I would argue is a moron. For $6-$8 you can get enough food to feed 2 - 3 people... (or one very hungry college student) and still have leftovers. Is it particularly good? No but it definitely leaves me feeling full and satisfied. But then again is any Chinese place where 3 pounds of General TSO's chicken and rice costs just $6 particularly good? With regards to delivery time it's the same deal... Try ordering on a Saturday at 7pm on a football weekend it's going to take 90 minutes. Should they get more drivers? Probably. Can they find enough people to work at delivery driver wages on Saturday night when their friends are all out partying? It's probably difficult. By comparison order from them on a Tuesday evening in summer, and your food might be there in 20 minutes or less. I've tried ordering from both their site and through Orderup.com. I've found that generally speaking they are more likely to receive the order through orderup.com than their site. This used to be the BEST Chinese restaurant in State College. Back when Joe was running the show, NO ONE could do Lo Mein like them. Now, I've gotten it a few times when I'm in to visit family and I'm disappointed every time. It's overlooked and DRY. Uncle Chens used to be the BEST, I even had them cater my wedding back in 2005!! Now I've had a lot of chinese food in my day and I can't understand why so many people love this place. Thankfully I had discovered other better Chinese long before I gave Uncle Chen's a try. I stopped after class one day to grab either a lunch or dinner, don't remember which. It came with friend rice, wonton soup and I believe I got General Tso's chicken. The fried rice completely lacked any type of flavor, it was hands down the most bland fried rice I've ever had. The wonton soup was right along the same lines, no flavor, watered down, like dish water. The General Tso's was overcooked making ti tough, dry and way too cripsy (ie. burnt) Maybe I just had a meal on an off day but it was enough to be done and done at Uncle Chen's. We were too tired to cook the other night so we ordered Uncle Chen's delivery. The portions are nice and large, and the food was hot, so we were happy! I got Chicken and Cashews, which honestly I've had better, but was pretty good, and the Family Tofu, which could have had more vegetables. (obviously I did not eat both, and they were great for lunch the next day!) Matt got the black pepper beef which was a little too black peppery for my taste but he enjoyed it. The egg drop soup was delish (and super cheap!). All in all I would recommend this for inexpensive simple Chinese take-out or delivery. If I could have given it 3.5 stars I would have. :) read more

American Chinese food. I've had better from a buffet. BUT ITS SO CHEAP.

This may not be some people's favorite Chinese food, but I think they do a fantasy job with the traditional "American" Chinese food items. If you stray too far through the menu, you might be disappointed, but they have great general tso's, lo mein, sweet & sour chicken and shrimp, and fried rice of course. I'm a little biased as this was the first places I ever got chinese take out. Also the first time I ever had General Tso's chicken which was just amazing. Ever since I have been looking for a chinese place that is just as good and am not able to fnd it. I still remember their so-crispy eggrolls, the deep dark rich sauce on the pepper steak and the way two people could eat for a few days on their combo @ $5 each. Every time we are passing through we try to stop for takeout (and then have to eat in the car, as there really are no tables inside). Delicious!! read more

This place is surprisingly good! Seriously, it's really good! When you pull up to this place, you may wonder if you're making a mistake.. but you're not! I've had their wonton soup, egg rolls, General Tso's chicken and their "Gui Zhou Spicy Chicken" The latter is definitely my favorite! My boyfriend also says this place is his favorite Chinese restaurant at PSU. For me personally, I would call this a tie with Golden Wok, which I also really like. The biggest downside, and its not really even a downside, is their fried rice really just seems like white rice with some butter and soy sauce mixed in; it's still good, but not what you typically expect from Chinese restaurant fried rice. But if you like spicy, not overly battered chicken, try their "Gui Zhou Spicy Chicken" Its not battered and it comes with celery and carrots. You still get mostly chicken though and it seems to be white meat chicken, or at least not cartilagey chicken like you get at some cheap Chinese places. read more

I am a fan of Chinese food. I've eaten it in several cities from legitimate Chinese restaurants, take out, delivery, mall foot courts, etc. I would have to say though, that this is not very good. Its not the worst, but its pretty low on the list. It's edible though, and there aren't many options at PSU. The upside is that it's cheap, fast, and they deliver. So, because it is cheap, generous portion sizes, lack of competition, and they deliver faster than any place I know, it somewhat redeems itself. By college standards, this is superb stuff when compared to Ramen. But I wouldn't recommend this place unless you are dying for some Chinese and don't want to travel for hours. read more

If I could give this store negative stars, I would. Years ago, this store was my favorite cheap shitty chinese place to order food from when I was hungry. Prices were good and portions were good as well. Yesterday, I attempted to place a quite simple order on grub hub, lo mein and crab regoons. Keep in mind that I live on campus, approximately 6 minutes from the store. (Did not walk to pick up food because of a broken leg). I placed my order at 3:45. 4:45 comes around, and no food thus far, so I decide to call the store and ask for an update. The women who picked up the phone states "it's on its way, there's a lot of traffic." Which doesn't make much sense being that we're so close but anyway. 5:20 comes around and still no food. At this point, it's getting ridiculous so I call grubhub. Grubhub calls the store, and the store tells them it's 5 minutes away, and should be there by 5:26. Unsure how the food was on its way at 4:45....yet still on its way at 5:26...being that I live a block away. I give it some time because clearly the staff at this store have no sense of urgency. 5:45 comes around, now 2 hours later from when I originally ordered, I decide to call grubhub AGAIN. Grubhub calls the store, and apparently was told that "there was a problem in the kitchen so they haven't made your food." So, 2 hours later, and told that my food was on its way, I have learned that my food is not even made yet. I call the store, and speak to some idiot, who states that they made a mistake and therefore haven't made my food yet. So why lie to customers and tell them their food is on its way TWICE, when you haven't even made it yet. They then state, "the food is finished" and so I ask, "is it on its way?" and the individual I was speaking with said "we have to wait for another delivery driver" WHICH WOULD TAKE AN EXTRA 30 MINUTES. Almost 3 hours later, I have received no food and have been deceived multiple times. I will NEVER order from this place again and I will make sure all of my peers do not at well. No one deserves such terrible customer service. read more

So, on the website i ordered from the logo said, Uncle Chen's, Best General Tso's in State College. My god i was so happy they were right, i got my order and opened the container and a wave of delciousness hit my nostrils. The food was hot, and fairly on time, i scheduled an order at 8:00pm two hrs prior and it was here at 8:05. With my order i got a quart of Wonton soup. unfortunately they only gave me enough wonton's for a single serving. and filled the container up with broth. Okay place. Finally was able to try it after all of the hype. Large proportions of food for a small amount of money. I bought an egg roll, general tsos and fried rice for $9. Take out box was filled to capacity and I ate it all over the span of a few days. So you definitely get your money's worth. As in taste, eh. The general tsos is okay. Not as crunchy as your average general tsos. The fried rice wasn't ... well, fried. It tasted like regular rice just with veggies in it and it was very bland. Egg roll was mediocre, it was just filled with cabbage. Service, okay. I ordered at 9:30 pm, and it took 10 minutes for my food. There is no seating inside or outside and it is very small, so if there are other people ordering or simply picking up their food, it gets very crowded. I have and always will be a faithful orderer to Uncle Chen's. I have tried quite a few places, but nothing compared to the size and well prepared taste to Uncle Chen's. It comes in a large size. And you can actually taste the food. My friend and I ordered from somewhere else and it tasted bland and the portions were small. That was about $75 worth that we don't plan to spend again! But as for Uncle Chen's, I have always been impressed. The only things that concern me is that the sweet and sour sauce is a bit jelly like. And that when I occasionally want to taste something different, say the popcorn shrimp, I got the 18 shrimp like it said. But the were smaller than my pinky, and it cost more than it should of. But aside from the occasional items, there are great deals. Mainly due to portion size. And the fact that it has taste to it. Delivery is wonderful, fast, and friendly. Ordered for delivery about 11AM to beat lunch rush. They call me 10 minutes later to say they're out of the drink I ordered (and asked if I wanted a more expensive one) and said they would need to change the type of rice because they didn't have the other kind made (?!). Then they call again about 11:35, I assume to tell me they were here, but instead to tell me (over a half hour after my order was placed) that they were cancelling my order because, quote, "they were kinda busy and I was too far away". For the record, I am located about a 5 minute drive from their location, *maybe* 10 if traffic is extra bad, and I had known people to order them from farther away. No apology offered, no asking if I could wait longer, just "we're busy, so we're not bringing your food". The food here is decent but nothing special (the "Best General Tso" thing is a total lie, theirs is awful), but the service is disgraceful. There are plenty of other better Chinese places in State College, so it's almost certainly worth avoiding this one and their incompetent staff. EDIT: And, judging by that reply, they'd rather just complain about people trying to ruin their business instead of actually address problems or, here's a thought, maybe APOLOGIZE. I wouldn't have bothered with a negative review if I had received any sort of apology, even a "sorry about the inconvenience" on the phone. But I didn't. Even now, if the reply to this review had included ANY indication that they were sorry I had such a negative experience at their expense, I'd maybe consider removing/changing the review. I've been here four times, so I think that's a decent sampling size from which to judge the food this place. First, the pro's: (1) they're open late; (2) they're cheap; (3) they have very generously-sized portions. But quantity rarely trumps quality, imho. While most dishes were sub-par to average on the Americanized Chinese-food scale, one dish trumps the rest. Their ma-po tofu, a simple standard, that likely every Chinese family (let alone restaurant) can prepare, was mediocre at best. Seriously, I could have prepared better from an instant sauce packet! Also, their rice looks like it was soaked in water too long before cooking, causing the grains to burst, giving it a crumbly texture. You can also see remnants of the hull on some grains, indicating low quality. Being located in the middle of nowhere with a general population that doesn't know what good Chinese food tastes like must have it's advantages. read more

As I was staying in State College for work, I found this place listed in the room guide book. I went to the website listed and ordered my food, and thought this was nice being able to place my order online. When doing so I was told receive a 10% discount for first time order, and the order would arrive in 45 Min. Over an hour after I ordered my food it finally arrived, and so did my bill. I ordered something simple, Shrimp and snow peas and fried dumplings. The dumplings were not light and crisp and were real heavy on the dough. And the Shrimp and snow peas, well let's just rename and old classic "Where's the Shrimp?" The food was mediocore at best, the discounts NONE (False advertising.), and over an hour to get my food. Just giving my .02 cents worth. I'll let you make your own decision. But from the looks of it this place seems to be hit or miss. Reviews started out good, but seem to have gone down hill. read more

This was my first time ordering from UC's and definitely my last I agree with the other reviews in that the portion was rather large but it doesn't really help if the food is inedible I ordered online off off one if those state college menu websites, but when the food arrived in timely fashion(i may add) in the two meals for me and another I ordered I found five! Yes five stands if hair in my food both long and short and of you think that's hard to picture imagine seeing out in food you were planning to eat. nonetheless, I will make sure that I never eat from this place again I just thought you all should know how they may have good service but in the food department they are just truly horrible read more

The General Tso's and the Sesame chicken is disgusting. The only reason I've kept ordering from here is because, just like everyone else says, it's cheap and convenient. One time I think I found remnants of a chicken foot mixed in, and overall the chicken is very low quality. I often pause and wonder mid-meal if what I am eating is actually chicken... I used to get General Tso's Chicken from here consistently. However, in recent months it has gone downhill in terms of quality. As recently as the fall, it used to be served with a lot of sauce and decent pieces of chicken. Now, in about half the time I've been ordering it in the past few months, the General Tso's Chicken is either completely dried up with virtually no sauce, or it is of the good quality that is used to offer consistently. So it's roughly a 50% chance for me that the food would decent Those aren't good enough odds to be spending 7+ dollars on. I'm not sure if they added a new cook or not but I have taken my business elsewhere in hope the food isn't a gamble anymore. read more

I've seen a lot of reviews that claim Uncle Chen's delivers quickly, however, in my 5 experiences with them this has not been the case. Delivery has never taken less than an hour, and as others say the quality of the food seems to vary pretty greatly. And I only live a block off Penn State Campus, roughly a 10 minute walk from Uncle Chen's. In my most recent experience with Uncle Chen's, I used OrderUp. I ordered Sweet and Sour Pork with a Monster Energy Drink as the drink choice. I included in Special Instructions verbatim "Could I have extra packets of Soy Sauce instead of Duck Sauce please". After an hour and 20 minutes my food finally arrived. As soon as I opened the bag I saw that the drink was wrong. It was a Red Powerade. I also noticed that the bag had about 8 packets of Duck Sauce. At this point I'm horrified that the order is completely wrong. However the rest of my order was correct, so I double checked that I didn't mark the incorrect drink by mistake(through my order confirmation email). However this was not the case. The only thing I can really say in defense of Uncle Chen's is they do offer large portions for an okay price. However, with the other Chinese options around campus, I can't say I will continue giving them my business, and I certainly could not recommend them. read more
