State College Five Guys (FG) is tucked away in a little shopping area on College Ave. At one time it was a Wendy's but those days are long gone. Parking is on the street, in the nearby garage or in the few spaces around the adjacent businesses. The interior is like most FG's, simple, red & white with bags of potatoes and fresh peanuts. I've always been a fan of FG's but with a lot more "fresh" fast options opened, it's dropped off my radar in recent years. For the uninitiated FG's is unique in that the burger is a fresh, never frozen 100% USDA beef, ground in-store daily. They are hand patties so they come out fresh and juicy wrapped in tinfoil. FG offers other fresh ingredients and the standouts are the fresh-cut fries and tasty buns =)! They also offer a bottomless supply of unshelled peanuts for free. On this day, I stopped in for lunch and ordered a "little" cheeseburger with fries and a drink. You can order the "little" which means 1 patty and saves you a few dollars. Personally, I'm not a fan of the 2-patty burgers. As you'll realize this place can be messy and the 2-patty sandwich complicates things a bit. Beyond that they give you numerous ways to customize your order but I typically go "all the way" -- sans mushrooms. Today's visit was outstanding. The burger and fries were fresh and tasty. I'm usually not a fan of the tinfoil (over waxpaper) but FG likes to lock in the heat. Sometimes the sandwich comes out smashed down. This would be a 5-star establishment all day but due to costs (around $18 for one person) and past inconsistency, I've knocked them down a notch. I don't even like Five Guys, but we did have it here and it was absolutely delicious. I was super surprised but it was well put together and so good. Ive been to this Five Guys about 4-5 times in the past 18 or so months but I don't think I will anymore because all of these times I have been disappointed. At first thought it was because I was ordering for deivery, but the last two times I went in person and was still disappointed. This is especially because the frys are skimpy now. A large is like $7 and sometimes the cup isnt filled all the way, and the extra scoop is either non existent or it is, and tiny, and the cup is partially empty so all together it's one cup. I'm not sure if this is the franchise or if the corporation changed their policy. I've also ordered different times of the day and with different staff. What's up Five Guys? I understand inflation and shortages but dang this place went from pricey but worth it to an actual rip off. read more

Amazing burgers and the best fresh-cut fries but I don't go here often, mainly because it feels like my arteries are clogging by just thinking about the burger and fries. Even though it's not the best option out there for you health-wise, it may be the tastiest burger and fries you've ever had. It's been a little while since I've been in there but from what I recall, the burger toppings are endless and included in the price of the burger, so you can put as many or as few as you'd like. Still the best burger joint in all of State College. Of course it's much more expensive than fast food, but the quality is exponentially better. Fresh patties, fresh fries, always served piping hot however I want it. And Five Guys still writes down on a whiteboard where they got their potatoes today. Always nice to see. Also, this location updated their dining area recently. No more booths, all chairs. But it doesn't matter much since the burgers are still as good as when they first opened. Funny place! They had a big box of peanuts...take a handful and have with your burger. Got to love it. They have a little cup for the shells. Ordered a bacon cheese burger. Got a bacon burger. Forgot the mayo, forgot the cheese! Come on! It is not that hard and the place was not busy. Like the simple menu of burgers, fries and dogs, as well as some of the topping options including grilled mushrooms, jalapeno peppers, B-B-Q sauce. The burger was good. The service was the most genuine of any restaurant in state college. Wasn't expecting that at five guys but kind ppl.

This place has got to be one of the worst five guys. When we inquired about the soda fountain being out of ice, we were told that it hasn't worked in weeks. It would have been nice to know that before we paid. The manager was obviously stressed out and it showed, he was calling out numbers aggressively and not acknowledging customers. Fries were soggy and the burgers had way too much ketchup on them. The only saving grace was that our order was correct and somewhat quick. read more

Delicious burgers, cooked and prepared fresh! You can also get your burger wrapped in lettuce or in a bowl if you are gluten-free or low carb. I personally cannot eat any gluten and tonight the cashier and cooks were so accommodating which was much appreciated. The cashier requested my food be kept completely separate upon learning about my allergy, allowed me to see the seasoning container for the cajun fries to determine if I could eat them, and also followed up with the allergen menu for future reference. At many restaurants I'm made to feel like a burden for having an allergy, but the cashier here was really kind and welcoming and I appreciated it so much. Five guys is a chain. It's a small but growing chain of burger joints that started in the Washington DC area. But each location is unique, and it doesn't look like a chain. These guys do three things -- burgers, fries, and hot dogs. I am not a big hot dog eater, but I LOVE Five Guys Burgers and Fries. They use fresh ground beef for their burgers. A regular is two patties; a junior is one patty. They have plenty of choices on fresh toppings. The burgers are made when you order them, so there is always a short wait for your food. But they have peanuts in the shell to munch on while you wait. And their fries! Fresh cut, cooked to perfection, and slightly salted. And they have malt vinegar that you can take to your table for a little added zing. These fries put MacDonalds, Wendys, etc. fries to shame. For a reasonable price, this place rocks. If you have a burger craving, you'll want to go to Five Guys! read more

I went here after hearing all this hype about how great the burgers were, only to be sorely disappointed. I got a regular burger with all the toppings: the 'fresh' mushrooms were fresh all right, fresh from a CAN! Everything was mushy! I ate it because it was going to be the only thing I could eat that day and I wanted something filling. They also give you half the bag's worth of overly greasy fries, which, for the price you pay for the meal, makes up in volume what the meal lacked in taste. I ended up trashing 3/4 of the fries because of the MASSIVE indigestion and heartburn I could feel welling up. My first Five Guys experience was in Chesapeake VA. I have eaten Five Guys up and down the East Coast and every single time I have been completely satisfied. The greatest thing about Five Guys is their consistency. The same Five Guys I ate in FL is the same I have eaten in PA. The toppings are all free, and the same from place to place. Heck with Ruby Tuesday or Red Robin, Five Guys is the best burger joint out there now. Can't talk about Five Guys without mentioning their fantastic french fries!!! Fresh cut, fried in Peanut Oil, then covered in an awesome Cajun (or plain) seasoning... YUM! A small order will serve two people easily!!! Two other things to note. They have free shelled peanuts to munch on, and they have the new Coke machines that give you hundreds of options. I prefer the Peach Mello Yellow Zero myself. Disclaimer: This is not healthy food. You will consume more calories and fat than any reasonable person should consume in one sitting. The fries will give you nearly as much saturated fat as the burger (maybe more if they give you lots of fries in the bag). The two combined will give you more saturated fat than you should be consuming over a several day span. That said, if you are looking for one of the best burgers around, Five Guys has it. We don't eat here often, but when we do we're always happy with the food. The burgers are really good, they always "hit the spot." The burgers aren't so greasy that we can't enjoy them, although sometimes I feel the fries are (If we take them home, by the time we get there the brown bag is literally soaked in grease, which is unappetizing in my opinion). If you have been to a big city 5 guys you may be sad. This place is hit or miss. The staff seems to turn over far to often and the food suffers. I have had very good meals and also some pretty marginal ones, the fries seem to suffer the most. My first experience with 5 guys was in the city and it was excellent. If I had not had this early memory I would never go back. They are a bargain in the city, but in a college town like state college there are a bunch of comparably priced places that have better food. read more

First time I went to a Five Guys in Minneapolis, I couldn't believe it was a chain. State College's franchise is just as good as the rest. I don't know where to start. my mouth is watering as I'm writing this review, and if it weren't 3 am, I would go there right now. first of all the Burger. Oh God the Burger. I always have it the same way: a cheeseburger with mayo, onions, mushrooms, tomato, lettuce, and Jalapeno peppers. All fresh ingredients on top of 2 delicious patties coocked to perfection. and the bun is just creamy and tasty. No words can give it right! Now comes the best part: the FRIES!!!! 5 guys is know to have the best fries in the nation. hand chopped and fresh, cooked in peanut oil (not like those frozen skinny-a## fries you get in most fast food places). I don't know their secret, probably the fresh potatoes, the peanut oil, or the cajun, but when I eat the fries I feel on top of the world. And the best part is they fill a cup of fries, put it in the bag with ur burger, then BAMMMM they add even more fries on top. Again, words cannot describe how good it is! And yes! a 5 guys meal is unhealthy because it probably has 2 days worth of calorie intake in a single meal (not to mention all the fat) and I struggle sometimes to prevent myself from going there a lot, but when something tasts so good, you say it's totally worth it! read more

Best fast food burger in State College. Despite all the college students, and the densely packed downtown area, it's tough to find a quick burger in State College. It seems like every other restaurant is pizza (case in point with the Sarina's right next door). Luckily, tucked away near the West side of campus on College Ave, there is Five Guys Burgers and Fries. Like all good burger places, their menu is brief. They have burgers, they have hotdogs, they have fries. They have plenty of toppings for all of them, and they give you healthy (read: heaping) servings. The fries are some of the best I've ever had, very freshly cut (they have a sign that tells you where that day's potatoes come from). Also, the burgers are a cut above other fast food joints like McDonald's and Wendy's. It's a well-known fact that the only difference between a large and a small fry is the size of the cup they throw in the bag after they fill it, so save yourself a few cents by buying the smaller size. Also, the only difference between a regular burger and a little one is that the regular has two patties. Being a burger chain with a strong reputation, there's something of a rivalry between Five Guys fans and In-n-Out fans. Being a West Coaster, I'm siding with In-n-Out...so I give this place 4 stars. read more

I've been to Five Guys all over this country and I honestly don't have anything bad to say about them because the food's essentially the same, so it comes down to the attitudes of the workers. I ordered take-out for my family last night. We ordered three burgers, a hot dog, and french fries. Two of the burger orders were incorrect. Paid for bacon on two of the burgers and only received bacon on one burger. Additionally, the burgers were clearly assembled with no attention to detail. One burger had one and a half patties instead of two. The condiments were all on one side of another burger. My son got a new hamburger bun from our closet, took his burger completely apart, and reassembled it on the new roll before eating it. I don't eat fast food often, and thus go to Five Guys maybe once per year. I had always thought they were a "cut above" Wendys, etc. I'm not so sure any more. read more

I don't get why so many people like this place so much? The bun isn't even toasted. 2 stars for the burger. Two things they got wrong when I went there: 1) They charged me for a drink when I didn't get one. 2) I ordered it with bacon and didn't get it. I got my refund for the drink, but I had already left by the time I opened up my bag to eat my baconless burger. If you like Fatburger, you'll like Five Guys. They're pretty similar in my opinion. Tasty but so greasy. The meat and fries are cooked in peanut oil, which gives a very good nutty taste to the food. But everything is always dripping with grease and it might be a bit sickening. The burgers are HUGE, if you're not ready to absorb the equivalent of three days of food, ask for a small. Same for the fries: they do not come in small packages like at McDo, they just dump a big serving into the paper bag. Always go with the smallest serving available, and it will already be more than you expected. Unlimited toppings of your choice is a very good thing, but always remember that your burger is already bigger than average!
