State Burger sits in a great location on High St. near the County Courthouse. Plenty of street or nearby parking. For some reason, I just recently visited this place for the first time and man -- I'm mad I didn't come sooner. I like burgers -- I like them traditional style, smashed, and with various accoutrements. The State has all of that covered. The restaurant is in a cool historic building and they've preserved some of that history while adding updates to give the place a nice and trendy feel. The staff were friendly and super helpful. You order on a piece of paper by selecting the patty type and size, the bun type and a boat load of sauces, toppings and other fixins. Reminds me of the old school way of ordering an MTO at Sheetz (for anyone that gets that reference). Beyond the burger we tried a milk shake, the fresh cut fries and onion rings. Oh my goodness! What a great find! We're not from the area and were passing through on I-80 when we were getting hungry and knew we should stop soon to get a bite. My wife was looking and looking and then found this place. It sounded interesting enough so we steered off the interstate and came into town. Talk about discovering a hidden gem! As always the food was phenomenal. I love the build your own burger format. It's a great value for the cost and as a fry hater the fries are usually nice and crispy for milkshake dipping. I got the honeycomb shake. It tasted mostly vanilla pry wouldn't get again id go back to the tried and true fruity pebbles. Amazingly delicious food and amazingly friendly staff! My waiter went out of his way to make me feel welcome. Kudos! The burger was far better than expected. It was cooked perfectly for my requested well done: no pink and also not overdone as it was still tender. I guess if burgers are the star of the show, they should be awesome. And they are. On mine I ordered cheddar, bacon, fried onions, tomato, iceberg lettuce, bread & butter sweet pickles, and ketchup & mustard on an onion roll. I wanted to keep it relatively simple on my first visit. I wasn't expecting these type of onion rings, but they were good. A bit greasy but still crispy and flavorful. Onion rings were a bit skimpy on the serving size, but still appropriate for an individual. Otherwise everything about the food was awesome! After my meal I ordered a milkshake to go. I tried the key lime milkshake since this was a special recommend by staff. I prefer more traditional flavors, but I decided to roll the dice. I'm glad I did, as it tasted exactly like a key lime pie, complete with little pieces of graham cracker crust/Nilla wafer-style crust. This was my first visit to State Burger, so it was entirely a new experience for me. As such I do have some feedback for the owner/staff. It might be good for your host to ask customers if it's their first time. Nothing was really explained to me, so I had to ask. I was handed a checklist and pencil, which was a little awkward at first... do they only sell burgers? Before my meal they plopped down a freshly filled squirt bottle. It didn't look like ketchup, so I had to ask. My waiter didn't ask if it was my first time either, but I mentioned it before ordering. They did help me understand things and give recommendations. But I forgot to ask how they cook their burgers, and they didn't mention this, nor did I see it anywhere next to where you choose your patties. Would be nice to know that ahead of time. Don't get me wrong, though, as my waiter was top-notch in everything else! Just feedback for the future. Also, there are way too many high tables here for my taste. Is this something you think your customers enjoy? I fortunately got the last regular height table, as everyone else already there opted for a regular table. That should be a good clue that everyone there that day (Friday, off-peak hours) wanted a regular height table. At least the location has some nice windows and decent views of town. Finally, it seems that the hostess spent more time standing near a window at the back instead of being up front near the lobby. It was a little strange to be eating so close to where the hostess was hanging out, but fortunately she was on her phone most of the time. Perhaps the hostess should be up front instead? I was in State College for work and thought I'd try somewhere new. State Burger was listed as a local favorite, so off I went. It's located in downtown Bellefonte, in case you are unaware, all the parking is meter parking. FYI So I went in and asked if they could make change for the meter. I was promptly chastised by the guy at the candy counter telling me that "we don't make change, it's a hassle". I should have just said OK I'll go somewhere else since I don't have quarters for the meter. The hostess tried to give me quarters. Finally, Mr Candy counter reluctantly made me change. Here's a tip. If YOU decided to locate YOUR business in a location with parking meters; SO be prepared to make change for CUSTOMERS. So here's the deal. I ordered a 1/3 pound burger on a pretzel roll which was lukewarm at best and not fresh off the grill. The burger was dry. FAIL. My poutine fries consisted of hot gravy and ice cold cheese curds, another FAIL. The best thing about lunch was my very attentive server and the very polite hostess. Oh wait one last thing. After lunch I walked over to the candy counter. Mr candy counter walked away. I wasn't going to wait for him to come back. Not impressed. Maybe you should concentrate on being less rude and not serving dried out cold burgers. read more

Took my family here for dinner after a day of travel - with 3 hungry teenagers in tow. Got seated right away, even though it was pretty busy. Sue was our very sweet server. The ordering process is fun - lots of choices on a paper order form...and you get to name your burger too! Allows for some creativity and the fun part? Tonight was my first time dining at State Burger Co. in Bellefonte. I'm absolutely thrilled with the quality of both the service and the food. The gluten-free bun was possibly the best bun I've ever had. I love that you can build your own burger and choose from so many exciting options. They don't have a gluten-free fryer, but the fries were fine for me since I don't have celiac disease. They were very conscious of my wife's soy allergy, too. A sleeper of a restaurant, locally owned. We come here often-ish, but always eat the MYO burger and fries. Today we tried Smokehouse Loaded Fries (not pictured, but with queso, red onion, bacon, cheddar and bbq), and Deep Fried Green Beans (also not pictured, paired with the Mad Cow dipping sauce). The star of the show was the dessert. It was light and not too sweet. Graham cracker crust, banana cream, a layer of Reese's PB, mountains of whipped cream, and finished with chocolate chips and Graham cracker crumbles. The desserts change weekly, I follow their ig page to see what I want to try. The atmosphere is welcoming, service is great, owners are people-centerd. My cook told me about this place so I drove 1hr 45 minutes to get here. It is in the town on top of a hill I guess Main Street. I got lucky and got a parking spot right in front. Inside is clean and bright and table and chair was comfortable. Service was right there I got the third pound but a quarter pound would have been better. You know your burger is big when they need a steak knife to pin it down. The burger is good. I would prefer more seasoning, which I put on salt and pepper at table. The grasshopper shake was great, love the taste of it and the old bay fries were tasty. They had 2 or 3 desserts I would have liked to try but I was too full. When you pay they give you a cow tail chocolate which I liked. The bathroom was spacious and clean but the lock is under the handle. If I had been in a hurry, that would make me mad. If you are near there, and you like burgers, I would highly recommend. read more

Boy, was this a strange experience. We were staying in Bellefonte and decided to take our daughter, a PSU student, to lunch. It was a Saturday around 2 p.m., fairly late for lunch, and we came upon this restaurant. The town was quiet with hardly anyone walking around. When we walked in, there were just 2 larger tables available. The hostess said she didn't have any tables for our party of three and refused to seat us at a table for 5, claiming they were being saved in case a bigger party came in. Very upsetting. We shared this with our innkeeper who said she knew the owner and would be sure to tell him how poorly we were treated. read more

State Burger is an awesome addition to the Bellefonte community. I love the fast casual vibe that they offer, and I think the clipboard ordering system is really unique and fun! I love to customize and can be quite picky, so being able to write down my preferences is awesome. The food always comes out really quickly and the service is kind and prompt. I typically order a burger with the works, a side of fries, and sometimes a shake. They offer fantastic desserts and their other menu items also look delicious! Happened upon this restaurant while passing through PA on I-80. Finding a restaurant that can accommodate gluten-free preferences isn't easy but State Burger delivered. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. My partner was able to get his burger on a potato roll and I was able to get the chicken burger I'd been craving on a gluten free bun. It was the smallest up charge I've ever had for a gluten-free bun and the best tasting & least crumbly one I've had yet. The french fry portions were huge and house made sauces delicious. The only thing we struggled with was the temperature of the restaurant. We had to keep our coats on the entire meal it was cold. Otherwise, it was a fantastic meal. read more

I wanted to like this place. Great concept. Kind of a cross between 5 guys and a drive-in on steroids. Tons of options for toppings and sauces and seasonings for the fries. However, your options for burger temperature are either pink or grey. No rare/med rare/medium/medium well/well done. Just pink or grey. It couldn't sound less appealing. My burger (pink) wasn't juicy. The brioche bun was not soft, but rather dense. Don't get me wrong, it was decent. Just not great. The owners both kept walking back and forth from the kitchen to the host stand, but not once attempted to speak to a customer. Odd. It is inexpensive, but there are plenty of inexpensive options in State College. I would not drive to Bellefonte for this burger. read more

These people need to be reported to the BBB! Friend was recently FIRED from there bc at the end of her shift she figured she had close to $80 in tips coming to her. When she clocked out, she found out the manager changed it to less than half that, and said the remainder should go to mgmt. When she questioned that practice, she was FIRED! A few weeks later, she's still waiting for her last paycheck. When she called to inquire when she can expect it, they told her if she wouldnt have been fired in the first place, she wouldnt have to deal w/ this mess! Super cute location in downtown Bellefonte, I'm always a fan of a burger joint that serves milkshakes. Interior is very warehouse-farmhouse, and you get seated by a host when you enter. The menu here is surprisingly affordable (a dinner for two for only ~$20), with plenty of customization options! While I loved the breadth of options you could put on your burger (especially different types of cheese), I was kind of put off by the two doneness options for the steak burger... who calls their doneness pink or grey?? The burger was pretty good, but honestly the star of the show was the fries, which you can get dusted with a "flavor powder" (and highly recommend the Parmesan garlic). I got a cookies and cream milkshake, which was okay, but honestly it didn't blow me away (I really wanted to try the grasshopper flavor, so maybe next time) Overall, still on the search for the best burger/milkshake in the area, but State Burger does it well enough (and cheaply enough) that I'd come back. read more

They let you choose your condiments and they didn't put nearly enough mustard/mayo so it was equally dry because of that.
