Very good, and the outside is eye appealing also, it's not old; worn down. Nice and modern let's keep it that way!!

Ordered a single cheesesteak which is served on a 12" soft squishy white bread hoagie roll. Rolls made by Angelo Pacifico & Sons in Altoona, PA. Didn't think I could finish it all, so I mentioned I'd take half of it to go and eat half to stay at the tables inside the shop. They kindly pre-wrapped my to-go half in an aluminum and paper sandwich wrap with tape to hold it, and plated the half to stay on a small paper plate with plastic fork. Very kind to do that even when I said I'd be happy to do it myself with a to go wrapper. I ordered the cheesesteak with peppers and onions and a dash of vinegar and oil. The beef cheesesteak was similar to a flank steak cut chopped into easy to bite shreds. My cousin ordered a chicken cheesesteak with grilled onions, peppers, mushrooms, shredded lettuce, thin sliced tomato, and mayo. The chicken seemed to be mostly white meat chopped into easy to bite shreds as well. Good selection of local sweet flavored teas and chocolate milk from Ritchey's Dairy in Martinsburg, PA, and Coca Cola soda products in the coolers to choose from. Locally made chips from Middleswarth in Lewistown, PA. Total for 2 Single 12" Hoagies & an Iced Tea just under $18. Payment accepted in Visa, Mastercard, Discover, Apple Pay, and Cash. For some reason, I just recently visited this place for the first time and man -- I'm mad I didn't come sooner. I like burgers -- I like them traditional style, smashed, and with various accoutrements. The State has all of that covered. The restaurant is in a cool historic building and they've preserved some of that history while adding updates to give the place a nice and trendy feel. The staff were friendly and super helpful. You order on a piece of paper by selecting the patty type and size, the bun type and a boat load of sauces, toppings and other fixins. Reminds me of the old school way of ordering an MTO at Sheetz (for anyone that gets that reference). Beyond the burger we tried a milk shake, the fresh cut fries and onion rings. My first visit was spectacular. For two of us our bill was under $30 -- which was beyond reasonable. State Burger -- I think you've nailed it and I can't wait to come back!

After…read moremissing an exit on the highway that led to what appeared to be a neat little mom-n-pop restaurant, we settled for the quirky and bucolic Buckhorn Family Restaurant. Situated inside the Milesburg, PA Travel Center of America (the trucker's Wal-Mart). I have to wonder if Buckhorn is a chain in itself for the food certainly had that quality. Regrettably passing on their Father's Day special of BBQ Ribs (their head chef's signature dish), I went for their Tex Mex Philly Quesadillas, and was slightly put off by the overcooked, grey meat, the unmelted, shredded cheddar, and limp steak fries. A sort of "frisco sauce" (a chipotle aioli?) livened them up somewhat, however, as did a dill pickle. Kay's fatty, crisped to a T, and therefore perfect fried chicken had me lamenting my poor choice. Had I gone with the fried chicken myself, I might have bumped up Buckhorn to a rock solid 4. Our server mentioned that their apple cobbler is the only dessert they make in-house, and did it ever taste that way. Crumbly, fruity, volcanic, the cobbler was served a la mode in a crock, and had me nearly singing the National Anthem due to its sheer scrumptiousness and magnanimous portion. The service was very friendly and on target. Refills came without asking. Our dishes arrived before we had time to become impatient. Eh, I shoulda ordered those ribs, though. Damn it. P.S. We ate so well at Buckhorn, we needed no further sustenance until the following morn. That must count for something. Consider my rating a high 3. If I ever return, I will try those ribs or that chicken.

I still gag just thinking about it…read more We were up looking at properties in the State College area and were STARVING by the time dinner rolled around. We decided to skip fast food and eat at the truck stop restaurant because they're usually decent and fast. We were wrong. I ordered a chopped steak with grilled onions and broccoli. I ordered it medium rare. It took forever to come to the table. The inside of the meat was cold. Which I might overlook because I did order it on the rare side. HOWEVER, when your meat is undercooked it is usually pink on the inside. This steak was mushy and gray. Which means the uncooked meat was gray, not pink, and was probably well past it's prime. My husband's steak was also cold (but at least it was pink on the inside). I ended up eating the broccoli (which was watery) and the onions. They offered to cook my meat longer, but it obviously was just stuffed in a microwave and after three trips for more cooking I was the proud owner of a very over cooked, microwaved piece of chopped beef. Barf. The kids also hated their food. She ordered spaghetti and he ordered chicken nuggets. He would only eat them after I peeled the coating off (it was nasty, hard, and tasted bad). She ate the spaghetti but didn't like the meatballs which happened to look like little round brown sponges that resembled dog poops when you cut the meatballs in half. These are kids that grew up in an orphanage on the other side of the world. They are not picky eaters. When they don't eat something you know that something is horribly wrong. At least they took my meat off the bill (I only ate about 5 bites - most of which I took to taste the temperature when they brought it back from the microwave). Ugh . . . Ugh . . . Ugh!

There are choices in this area, but we opted for what we thought would be fast. We should have gone elsewhere if we were looking for fast. This McDonald's has been here for decades. Outlasting the go cart track, multiple rebuilds of the Sheetz, and stores closing down nearby. We pulled in, later in the evening, and the parking lot was nearly empty. We actually wondered if the lobby was closed. But we took the chance to come inside. Like most locations, this one focuses too much on the drive thru. Which became apparent when we had placed our orders and waiting long than you should have to at a fast food place. What was surprising was the customer service. The lady that did end up serving our food to us was a delight. She was funny, didn't take any grief, and if I remember correctly, was singing while she worked. I loved that she put my Dad in his place. My Dad was being a bit too much asking for things that he could have grabbed himself. The food is what you would expect. I did give their new sandwich a try. It was decent and possibly too much food for one meal. The Big Arch is basically the Big Mac in a trench coat. Better cheese and fried onion straws. This location went through a change when McDonald's wanted to grow up, but they held onto some nostalgia things. Like Ronald McDonald outside on a bench and some of the old roofline. But, like I said, not many people will care since they are in the drive thru.
