Happened to be in the area and was in the mood for authentic Chinese food. Sichuan food is always delicious for their more spicy dishes and a lot of fast but light wok fried food. My party was seated right away and the server was so nice and attentive. All the food looked delicious but I went for my go to Sichuan favorites: cumin beef (or lamb if available), sautéed string beans, and steamed egg. Yummy cafe is my favorite Chinese restaurant in State College mainly because they serve actual authentic Chinese food. Most places around here have catered their flavors towards an American food palette and is usually underwhelming. Yummy Cafe is not afraid to give you authentic dishes. I always get the eggplants with garlic sauce and it is always consistently delicious. The ma po tofu is sweet and spicy but the spice does not overwhelm the dish. The only thing that was lacking were the sesame balls but they were also REALLY good. The red bean paste was just a bit dry. I think one thing the restaurant can improve on is their menu, only the take out menu has the right prices. But, the waitress is really nice and made our experience at the restaurant pleasant. In regards to the ambiance, the interior design is a bit old and could use an upgrade but I think it bring authenticity to the overall experience at the restaurant. Food here was great. I got orange chicken with white rice and it was great. It came out quickly. It was flavorful and good. One thing I don't like about this place is the prices. Their prices are different from online to in person. Online it said it was about 2 dollars cheaper than it actually was. I sat inside and ate. I won't recommend this place to anybody. Foods are over-oily and usually overcooked. Meat and pork are nearly unrecognizable. Prices need to be more transparent. Many prices on the menu are inconsistent with that actually appear on the receipt. Service MUST be improved. This is a hole in the wall of Asian cuisine, Their menu far surpasses all most anything I have ever found. This family owned restaurant has given a China town style to Happy valley. We were here with a large group. This place came highly recommended. I was able to sample many of different tastes that I would not have had experience. I must say a lot of what I tried was better than I was expecting.Even things I was afraid too . The flavor was not American asian flavor but a traditional flavor that was extremely good. Mapo Tofu: Taste was decent enough. Didnt really taste like the mapo tofu im used to so i didnt really like it as much. Its more of a brown sauce mapo tofu, which ive seen/eaten before but i feel its more of a collegy taste rather than an authentic taste. It has peas in it and not enough chili oil or spicy sauce. Five Spice Beef Stew: Stew means theres sauce but not thick ass sauce like a curry. You can think of it as a thin watery sauce. Comes with carrots. Its got some fatty and tendon pieces for those that like that. Would probably get this again unless i can find it somewhere else that does it better in state college lol Stewed pork ball: In chinese the dish is called lion head. Its these ground pork meatballs if youve never had it before...Sauce came out like it would in cali... no problems there. The meat was a lil funny. Not as good as in cali but good enough. Bad service and horrible food. I went to this place last weekend and waited for about an hour to get our food. Something more interesting happened when checking out--they kept trying to convince us that tips are mandatory for at least 15% in their place. This is a follow up to my visit two days ago. I decided to try the restaurant next door, which was closing and thus could not seat me. As a result, I decided to utilize one of the outdoor seats that likely belonged to Yummy Café. The lady that served me saw me outside and to my surprise invited me in. Being that it was a bit cold, I took her up on her offer and sat at the table by the window where I could more comfortably enjoy the food that I did not even buy at this establishment. She even offered me some water as well. The younger dude that I had seen two days ago had a nice chat with me and asked me about the food, which I said was quite good. Once finished, I went to the bathroom, again thanked the staff and left. Anyway, the point here is that the staff, likely from recognizing me as a previous customer, was nice enough to allow me to eat in their establishment even though I purchased food from somewhere else. This to me is top class when it comes to respect for the customer and makes me eager to provide repeat business. As a result, this place will continue to be my go-to spot whenever I make my way across the state and desire some good eats and top notch service. read more

Okay so this place is a bit of a hit or miss. They have nice and authentic food like pig intestines, but sometimes they pull a d*ck move like their "pork belly in garlic sauce", which is just half a bowl of boiled bacon with the other half of the bowl filled with bean sprouts. This is the worst Chinese restaurant delivery I have encountered in this area for the past 4 months. It was late for a hour, I called in, they said the driver cannot find my house. When delivery guy finally arrived, he was even trying to ask for additional tips(I gave 16% tips, which is $3 something). On what grounds you want more tips from me. I live on the west college ave. It is less than a miles from the restaurant, and this is one-way street. My house is on the right side, very noticeable. I can even walk from my house to the restaurant for like 10 minutes, since it is literally 6 blocks away. I will not recommend this restaurant and their services. It's been twelve years since I left a review for this place. I didn't like it back then but I noticed they had changed owners so I decided to try it. Only tried one dish so far. Mapo-tofu was really good. Just as good as in the city. I hope to try more dishes in the future. Also, what's with these chinese restaurants not advertising? I've been here twice. It's a fairly new place, and it's a cute place. All of the pho places around state college have been shut--viet thai, tana (which was gross to begin with anyway.) So when I found this Yummy Cafe, I was excited to have some pho! Err, I got my food and realized this is more like a chinese version of pho that tastes nothing like an authentic bowl of beef brisket and cilantro flavored pho I am used to. I was very disappointed, and ended up just drinking the bubble tea I ordered (very good honeydew!!!) I came back here again to treat my hangover, but was disappointed, again. I have just about given up on every pho place in state college, and I guess I'll just stick to Big Bowl noodle house as the closest bet in this small town. read more

I was pretty excited when I heard that a ramen place had opened up in town. Turns out it's a national chain that's all over the place.... and by that I mean culinarily speaking. There's pho, ramen, and "Chinese" food, as in Americanized Chinese food. They have ma po tofu on the menu, but since there is NO way in hell it could possibly be any better than what Chopstick Express cranks out on a regular basis, I stuck to their self-professed specialty: noodle soups with homemade (sic) noodles. Tried the tonkatsu ramen and the pho. Both broths, supposedly cooked for several hours, were pretty damn bland and rather similar. I mean, I can throw some chicken broth together with some meat, add store-bought spaghetti (!!!) and call it ramen, too... but that doesn't make it right. And don't get me started on the pho. A go-to Chinese restaurant for takeout! Everything I've gotten has been amazing! My favorite item are the dumplings!

My friend and I came up to state college to visit family and when we arrived we went to lunch at Yummy's. Our first impression was pretty okay. It looked just like a restaurant in China. When we ordered they were very attentive. The food tasted okay. It was definitely not the best food we have tasted in America of this category, but it was okay. The reason I am giving only two stars though, is because when we sat down, we ordered almost immediately, which left us confused when people who sat down after us were getting their food first with more complicated orders. read more

Pretty simple order in my opinion, well guess again! They came back 45 minutes later, with some white rice with egg in it (so not really fried) and pork. Basically, I waited 45 min for the exact opposite of what I ordered. So I left and went to big bowl where I waited all of 5 minutes for a delicious eggplant and rice meal for $3 cheaper. Placed a delivery here today for some cheap and quick Chinese food. Well, at least it was cheap. The person delivering had to call multiple times for directions (which was fine), but it took forever and he still ended up going to the wrong building. I ordered the orange chicken and general tso's. I can confidently say this was the worst Chinese food that I have ever had. Everything was bland except for the wonton soup, which was impressive compared to the chicken. The rice even had a bad taste - I didn't even think that was possible.
