Had a great first time at Umami with my boyfriend. We both were super happy that we were able to get last minute reservations to this place as I heard it was some of the best sushi in Pittsburgh. The food and drinks absolutely blew us away... the sushi was so fresh and delicate and the broth from the ramen was packed with flavor. The drinks were inventive and strong which I loved. Upon ordering my second drink however me and our waitress had a decent conversation on what was popular and what I should try...as soon as I ordered we were given a voucher where it was $2 dollars off drinks. Unfortunately we were not eligible for the $2 dollars off drinks because I had ordered just seconds before. I felt like the waitress should have let us know about that however I understand that it might have slipped her mind. Overall it was a really good experience and I do recommend going.
Umami has been a bi weekly rotation in my household! I've brought my family, visiting friends, and coworkers and all of them have left full and happy excited to return! I highly recommend a reservation as they do not take many walk ins, especially for big parties and definitely take advantage of their happy hour menu (5-6pm). Their HH menu allows you to try some of their most popular bites for a fraction of the cost! Items that we ALWAYS order are the karaage, stir fried udon wit shrimp tempura, at least 3 skewers, the lychee martinis, Takoyaki, and some variation of toro. We try to mix in others every time and have never had a bad bite! Servers are always so kind to us and can't wait until my next visit! Hopefully it's soon!
I dined here solo and ate at the bar. It was very good. I started with the Addictive Cabbage, rightly named. Then I got the Nigiri plate which had a sampling of sushi. I don't know how they do it but it was melt in your mouth good. I also tried the pork gyoza dumplings, also very tasty and served in a unique way. It was a Friday night and they had a DJ spinning tunes which created a cool vibe. The bartender was nice and helpful. I would definitely go back but be prepared to hunt for a parking space as it's in Lawrenceville. I also thought the wine pour was a little on the skimpy side. Those were my only minuses.
Umami is a great spot for happy hour, dinner, and even late night happy hour on the weekends! We had dinner there the other week and everything was so flavorful and the moody lighting was a whole vibe. We ordered basically half the food menu along with several drinks and I enjoyed everything we got, especially the shareable small plates and the robatayaki skewers! Our friends who came back from Japan earlier that week gave it their stamp of approval so you know it's good!
The vibes at the restaurant are amazing. Dry martini was absolutely 'umami,' and chirashi bowl was amazingly fresh. The service was pretty good. My only issue with the service was that the brought me the incorrect drink while we were waiting for a table, but they corrected and brought the correct drink over. What's nice is that they take drink orders for you while you wait (even if you're standing and not sitting at the bar). The hostess was extremely friendly and personable. When we were sat at our table there was cold air blowing and we asked to be sat at a different table without the air blowing constantly. They accommodated us which was great. The food was absolutely amazing and super fresh. Unfortunately, as you can see from the photos, the lighting is not that great with regard to taking photos. It is very red everywhere and I think they could soften that a little in my opinion so people can take clear photos of their amazing food.
My buddy and I visited Umami on Friday. I highly recommend that you book a reservation. This was my first time visiting and it did not disappoint! We went during happy hour so we saved a few bucks. To get to the restaurant you have to walk up two flights of stairs, but once you're there the restaurant is awesome looking. Great bar, great kitchen, and great staff! Darelle was working behind the bar and he is top notch! Of course I had to eat as much as possible so we ordered off the happy hour menu first: suntory highball, wolf & cub, daily uramaki, and miso torched salmon nigiri. Everything on that happy hour menu was absolutely delicious! After that I moved to the main menu: skewers - I ordered four different ones: Wagyu beef, pork belly, bacon quail egg, and fried chicken skin. Every single skewer was delectable! The last two items that I ordered was the Otoro hand roll and gyudon with added pork belly. Both were absolutely excellent! The bluefin fatty belly in the hand roll just melted in my mouth. I really cannot wait to go back to Umami, the vibes, the staff, and the food were simply fantastic and amazing. Definitely worth a visit!
Oh man, I'm not gonna lie, Umami is probably hands down one of my favorite spots for sushi, ramen, and gyoza. I went here with one of my good friends who came to visit me from the city and we enjoyed literally everything about this place. At first I was a little sketched out because you have to go up a couple flights of stairs. I was confused like... are we even in the right spot? But yes, you just keep walking up the stairs and eventually you pop out into the restaurant. And once you walk in you're like okay yeah this is a whole vibe. They have a DJ playing in the back and if you sit at the bar in front of the grill it's super fun. I got to watch them grill the skewers, dip the skewers, make the sushi... all of it. That alone made the experience so cool. We started with drinks and got lychee martinis and OMG we could not stop drinking them. When we order food we like to try a bunch of different things so we went in. We got edamame, gyoza, miso soup, and the fried chicken. I wasn't really a fan of the fried chicken because it tasted like chicken thigh meat and I'm just not a dark-meat girl, but the gyoza was amazing. I've never seen it made like that. It came out pan-seared and fried in a way where it was connected so you had to break it apart. The edamame was great too. We also got ramen. I wasn't a huge fan because it tasted a little burnt to me, but my friend loved hers so that might just be a me thing. Then we saw people ordering these stuffed sushi triangles, asked about them, and found out it was from the secret menu. So of course we got one. It was filled with spicy tuna and pretty good overall. We tried different skewers too - shrimp, steak, salmon, and chicken - and they were all amazing. The glaze they use is crazy good. Sweet, tangy, a little like sweet and sour but better. And shoutout to our server Dominique because she was bomb. She had us laughing the whole night and explained everything on the menu perfectly, especially the things we had no idea about. Overall this is definitely a go-to spot whether I'm with friends, by myself, or on a date night. Total vibe from start to finish.
I highly recommend making reservations, as this place gets busy. Also, give yourself extra time to find parking, as many spaces are reserved for residents. The entrance can be a little tricky to find. Once you find the door, just keep going up a couple of flights of dark stairs. When you arrive at the top, you'll find the lively bar and a great setup. We got a table near a window and arrived just in time for happy hour. We tried almost every dish on that menu and loved it all. We then ordered a delicious mix of skewers, sushi, and torched salmon. The staff were super friendly. This place is highly recommended.
My husband chose this spot for my first dinner after moving here, and... He made the right call :) Definitely make a reservation; the place was packed. The seafood is fresh, and the menu features several creative options. We tried a variety of items (Nigiri, Temaki, Takoyaki, and the daily specials) and honestly loved everything! As sushi lovers, we shared several small plates and really appreciated the quality. The fish-to-rice ratio was spot on. I loved the vibe: very hipster, complete with a DJ. Next time, we'd love to sit at the counter facing the kitchen for that authentic Japanese experience. Our server was so sweet and gave us some great recommendations. Even though it was busy, the timing of the courses was perfect. Highly recommend!
Where do I start? Such a unique little place! I'll admit, as I was walking up the stairs, I wondered if I was even in the right spot--but as soon as I reached the top, I was greeted by the most welcoming host. You could immediately feel the energy and liveliness in the air. Once we were seated, our server was right there with menus, ready to take our drink order. She immediately asked about allergies and knew exactly what I could eat being gluten-free. She even reminded my dinner partner that one of the dishes he ordered wouldn't be shareable with me--which I thought was incredibly kind and conscientious. The service and ambiance? Top notch. Now, the food and drinks--OMG. I didn't try any of the sake (even though they have a huge sake menu), but I could tell if I'd wanted to explore it, they would've happily walked me through each one. There was plenty of food for sharing, and every single piece of fish I tried was fresh, beautifully presented, and absolutely delicious. Don't sleep on the bacon-wrapped quail eggs. I really appreciated how thoughtful they were about my allergy, and between the amazing service, lively atmosphere, and incredible food, I'll definitely be back. The whole experience was so good, I'm already planning my next reservation.
Went here on a date and it was wonderful! The restaurant is on the third floor with an unassuming entrance but it's tucked away behind the Corner Cantina. Once you get into the restaurant, it's a nice little spot. They even have floor seating in a nook but I think those you have to reserve much ahead of time. We tried a little of everything. The staff was very attentive and regularly checked on us. Skewers - the shrimp is good but there's only one piece per order which is steep. The salmon was rlly good though and we got two of them, each has 4 pieces on it. The wagyu was good but not particularly special. They are all dipped in this pork sauce so I think they're all about the same flavor and depends on what medium you prefer. Also, everything is dipped in the same sauce so the skewers aren't a good option if you have a shrimp allergy. We got the sashimi plate which came with two pieces of each fish which was perfect for us to sample a little of everything. Once we tried a bit of everything, it helped us decide what we wanted in a handroll. The handroll had a good amount of fish as well as the amount of rice was good and seasoned with furikake. Hands down our favorite one was this seared salmon with miso paste that they apparently have on their secret menu. We ordered several of these. We also got the takoyaki which was yummy with no chewy bits inside which happens sometimes and can give me the ick. But this one was gloriously absent of chewiness and was just yummy. The matcha creme brulee was good, nothing in particular to write home about just a lot of matcha cream once you break through the sugar shell. Overall, quite an enjoyable and yummy meal. We came to dinner after we already ate less than 3 hours previously so we didn't think we would get much, especially knowing that it was a pricy place. However, we did end up eating a lot more than we expected because it was so yummy. Would definitely return for the seared salmon and maybe a handroll, I think the sashimi plate was good to have the first time just to try everything but would skip on a return visit since it is so pricy and so we can just eat our faves.
We celebrated my birthday dinner at Umami, and it was absolutely perfect. They seated us in the tatami room, which is ideal for a larger dinner party and made the night feel extra special and intimate. Reservations do book out quickly, so I definitely recommend booking in advance. Every single dish and drink we ordered was outstanding, truly no misses. The atmosphere and flavors reminded me so much of restaurants in Tokyo, which made the experience even better. Everyone in our group had an amazing time, and the staff surprised us with complimentary birthday sake shots, which was such a fun and thoughtful touch. Overall, Umami is 100% worth the hype and a must-visit for a special occasion.
If I could have packed this lil spot up and taken it back to Charlotte with me I would have. Umami was the absolute highlight of my quick trip to Pittsburgh last weekend. I came off of the recommendation of a good friend and it did not disappoint. I came alone on a busy Friday and asked to sit at the bar, and it was packed in there. The host was SO kind to literally grab a stool from who knows where and squeeze me in at the bar. Truly so kind and so appreciated. I was perfectly happy to sit elbow to elbow with some really nice folks at the bar. Someone gave me some recommendations on food and the bartender was amazing too! For drinks, I ordered the "old osaka" which is their take on an old fashioned with tori whisky, china china and shiso honey. This drink was phenomenal!!! So flavor forward, but so well balanced. I also tried one of their rare liquors called "cor cor red" it's an Okinawa molasses rum and it was pretty dang strong and tasty. I had to try it because it's something I've never seen on a menu. The drinks were amazing and so was the food!!! For food I ordered spicy pickled cucumbers, and these skewers: wagyu beef, brussel sprouts and shisito peppers. They were all delicious! The absolute STAR OF THE SHOW though, was the "takoyaki" which are fried octopus balls. My goodness! These were so good I almost ordered a second helping. Seriously delicious! My entree was the gyudon which is a beef rice bowl and it was also really good!! The funny thing is I ate ALL of this food, all of it. I can't express enough how fun of a culinary experience this was. From great food and drinks to awesome service and ambiance. This was truly a dinner to remember and I'll visit this place every time I'm in Pittsburgh!!! Truly a 5 star experience!

Food was good, restaurant had nice vibes. Super cool to find an izakaya style restaurant in Pittsburgh. The whole restaurant is red lighting which hurt my eyes for a bit, but you adjust. They also had live music when I went from a dj. Fish quality was good and the hot appetizers were tasty. All our food came out super quick and it is meant for sharing! read more

Fun trendy spot in the Lawrenceville neighborhood. There are so many new hot spots in this area from when I last lived here. This one I would highly recommend making reservations because it's smaller and popular. You would not know it was there if you were not aware of it. There is no sign outside and you have to walk up two flights of stairs to get there. The decor in the hallway is fun. When you walk up the steps you see two bars. One with drinks and a raw bar. Those are first come first serve. We decided to take a chance on a Friday night without reservations and try and get a spot. We were able to get a spot at the bar in a good area around 6:30pm. They have a DJ starting at 8! The person hosting in the front was a very great host with customer service. Since my sister said I was visiting he was helpful with suggesting menu items and giving advice of other spots. Very personable. I got the octopus bites and some of the skewers. Once was Brussels and the other was shrimp. All the food was delicious but my favorite was the drink. I ordered 3 of the same drink. I thought it was so good! It was the only drink with tequila in it and it was spicy and tart. My only issue there was the specials were read to other customers by the bartender but we did not get read the specials. So I would have ordered one of the specials if I knew about them. read more
We loved umami! Made a reservation for Matt's birthday months in advance, we were so glad to find Umami for sushi and other favorites. We started off with a few apps or Yatai: goyoza, takoyaki, and zaru soba noodles. These were all easily shareable and were super tasty. My favorite was the takoyaki, crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. Matt is still talking about the soba noodles. I had never tried soba noodles before and they were a great surprise. The Italian in me wanted to twirl the noodles but I eventually got the hang of it to pick them up with my chopsticks. Our "main" course, we shared the Bara Chiriashi, a wonderful bowl chock full of raw fish. It would be a full meal for someone on their own, but I'm glad we shared it. Then came the sashimi plate. I wish we didn't share this because I wanted it all to myself! All the fish was clean, tasty and beautifully plated. Our last "main" was the TNT roll. Our server said that this changes daily. I can't remember what the filling was for it on the day we went; but it was delicious. Crisp and warm it was a nice contrast from the cool fish we had been enjoying. I'd also like to add that the food came out so perfectly we never had 2 things on the table. It was a a clean transition from dish to dish without feeling rushed or claustrophobic on the already small table. We finished off our dinner with their 2 desserts because it was Matt's birthday! Gotta have dessert. They have a taiyaki, a warm fish waffle (no fish, just fish shaped) with a creamy filling. It came with a creamy fruity ice cream with yuzu. Matt got the purin, a Japanese style flan. I really liked Matt's, the flan was light and delicious. We will definitely be back here, everything is as amazing and delicious really enjoyed the experience. I can't remember the servers name, but he was really great, making sure that our meal flowed perfectly, and we always had beverages. Go here! Enjoy the food. Happy Eating! read more
Wow I can't believe I haven't reviewed Umami sooner. This is in my top 5 fav restaurants in Pittsburgh. I was introduced to Umami by friends a few years ago. You enter the restaurant through the side door on 38th street. You go up a few flights of steps. I'm not sure if they have another access point if you are not able to do steps. You can smell the food as you are walking up the steps past the bright red lantern lights. It is dimly lit and a super cool vibe. It definitely does not feel like you are in Pittsburgh. On the weekends they have awesome djs. It is the perfect place for dinner before going out on a Saturday night. I don't know what it is, but every dish on the menu has a certain taste (maybe it's literally the umami flavor?) that you can't find anywhere else. I have eaten many dishes from the menu, but here are some of the highlights! The veggie gyoza are crunchy on the outside and soft in the inside. They are really yummy, but are a little bit spicy! I first tried Takoyaki at Umami! They are Octopus Balls made with: Aonori, Kewpie, Tonkatsu Sauce, and Katsoubushi. Wow! They look like fried hush puppies and are warm and mushy inside with chunks of octopus. They are the definition of an umami dish. Don't skip these. Note: I have ordered these takeout and they don't travel well. You need to eat them while they're fresh! They used to have miso deviled eggs and I'm not sure if those are back on the menu or not, but they were definitely a fav for our group. The sashimi plate is one of the best ever. This is the first place I ever tried raw scallops. They melt in your mouth and are buttery. They are placed between lemon wedges and it gives it the perfect amount of acid. Literally drooling just thinking about the scallops! The raw fish is always fresh. The sashimi place is made up of: Madai, Sake, Hamachi, Maguro, Scallop, Ikura for $26. You don't dip it in soy sauce and wasabi like a normal sushi restaurant. Sometimes there are little pipettes (?) of soy sauce or some other type of sauce you pour over it. It is my favorite thing to order there with a glass of sparkling rosé! On to the noodles! You HAVE to get an order of Udon noodles even if you plan on just going there for sashimi or sushi rolls. Yaki Udon - Hon Shimeji, Beets, Nori, Togarashi, Beni Shoga, Onsen. The noodles are thick and gooey and have so many textures and flavors. I haven't tasted anything like this anywhere else in Pittsburgh. The portion sizes are big, so you can definitely share this noodle dish with someone! PSA! These noodles are very spicy! Make a reservation for this place now! You do have to book fairly far in advance, especially for a group. Pick a day and plan for it - you won't regret it! read more

Everything was good here, cool music good drinks, nice atmosphere, prices were a little steep for the nigiri plate & sashimi plate. Ordered both & came out on one plate not a whole lot but understand it's high grade sushi. We also got the prime rib steak, shoyu ramen, and a few other things, left hungry but was very good none the less read more

Gyoza was some of the best I've had. The chirashi was great. Only a few pieces of fish were fishy, but that comes with being in the mountains. The red/orange lit atmosphere was fun and paired well with the music. I only wish the tables were situated differently, because my partner and I were sitting awkwardly close to another couple. read more

Simply marvelous dining, and truly authentic Japanese Cuisine. The food is stunning, all carefully prepared to allow you to experience the complex and subtle flavors that are the hallmark of Japanese cooking. Our server was very attentive, and contributed several helpful suggestions regarding my menu choices. Several vegetarian options are available. My only concern is the absence of a Shōchū drink option. I loved the soft Jazz playing in the background, very typical of a fine Japanese restaurant. There's a terrific Japanese ambience overall. Yes, this place lived up to the stellar reviews. We were in the neighborhood and decided to chance it and hope for a seat at the bar. I'm glad we did! Luckily, at the time we arrived there were several bar seats available - but it did fill up quickly. I will also note there were no tables available, so other yelp reviews are very accurate when they mention making reservations. The atmosphere here is very funky (in a good way) I love all of the dark decor and night club-like lighting. Please be aware there are several flights of narrow stairs - so be prepared to do some climbing! The bartender who served us was awesome - very knowledgeable of the menu and willing to provide menu recommendations. Neither of us had been here - so we decided to try a few menu items. The robatayaki menu was extensive, but I wouldn't say that we would order from it again. We were served a few small skewers (our bartender let us know they were tiny beforehand so that was appreciated) but the flavor wasn't anything to rave about. We had the Wagyu beef tenderloin, and the Scottish Salmon. Both were good, but not crazy good. For our meals we had the CHIRASHI which was filled with fresh fish, and even a quail egg. I ordered the MISO RAMEN and was extremely happy with not only the flavorful taste, but the amount of veggies (especially mushrooms) that were given. I'm happy I could cross this place off of my PGH food bucket list - I would recommend it to anyone looking for a cool hang out spot - and someone who enjoys a fresh, and unique dining experience. read more

I had high expectations for Umami, the "U" stop on our Pittsburgh restaurant alphabet tour. Those weren't quite met, but I can't in good conscience rate this place lower than a 4. Up the stairs on a side street off of Butler in Lawrenceville you'll find Umami, a Japanese pub dedicated to Umami flavors. Umami is one of the five basic tastes (sweet, bitter, salty, and sour being the other four). It can be best described with a loose translation to "a pleasant savory taste" in English. It reminded me of a speakeasy the way most doors were unmarked or subtly pointed to the restaurant. The music was vibrant and loud, contrasting the dull lighting. It was someplace I enjoyed being. Book online a week or two in advance as spots fill up quickly. Let's get to the food. The menu is broken into a couple categories "Yatai" (think appetizers or street food), "Robata" (a single skewer of 3-4 meats), and sushi. This place is great for picking a couple small plates and sharing amongst friends or your date. I recommend getting anything that you have never heard of! You'll be pleasantly surprised. For us it was the Okonomiyaki. We also wanted to try a few of the Robata and topped it off with the Shio Ramen as sort of the main dish. Okonomiyaki 4.1/5 - a pancake type of street food filled with various veggies and the likes. Topped with a couple sauces, you get a great variety of textures from crisp to creamy to chewy and flavors from sweet to savory to bitter. A true definition of umami and a sensation on the palate. Robata 3.8/5 - we opted for the bacon wrapped quail egg, wagyu beef, and pork belly. These are priced around $3-4 each which seems a little steep for how good they were. The wagyu did not feel tender enough to be wagyu, I'm skeptical it was. It was seasoned well though. The bacon wrapped quail egg was unique, with a creamy center of the yolk, but the bacon overwhelmed it. The pork belly was mostly fat so how could it have been bad? I felt these pieces were under seasoned. Ramen 3.2/5 - the biggest let down. I was truly looking forward to a delicious and beautiful ramen dish prepared here, but it failed to meet expectations. There was a burnt taste in every bite that I believe was incorporated into the broth that I could not get past. Maybe it was supposed to be like that, but it was so distracting that I couldn't enjoy the other aspects of it. I've had better 30 minute eggs and the pork belly was bland again. That all being said, this place has so much to offer and I can't underrate it because of one dish that I personally did not like. If I was invited to here again I would look forward to going but with so many great places to explore in the area, it would likely be a while until I went back on our own again. read more

Invest in a better reservation system. One that doesn't double book. Your staff knows it's an issue. And turning away loyal customers who spend thousands of dollars per year at your establishment is not worth the few bucks you are saving using a sub par system. I used to frequent this restaurant 4 to 5 times per month. But the level of customer service lately and the fact that they couldn't be bothered is disappointing for a high end restaurant. Hopefully you do better in the future. read more

Nice atmosphere. Good music. It wants to be a hidden gem so bad (mysterious black entrance door, small sign on the side of an alley...) but the food just isn't there. Sushi was a bit overpriced in my opinion, for the freshness of it. I got the shio ramen - the pork ribs were really tasty & the noodles were nice. The rest of the ramen was a bit subpar. The nitamago was too vinegary and the broth not flavorful enough and not spicy enough for me. I added chili oil and that made it a lot better. Drinks were pretty but not the best I had. Cute place for a date or whatever. Might be back , might not. Who knows. read more

For all my sushi lovers, you must get the nigiri plate! I almost always get this and it is never a disappointment. My favorite nigiri has to be the ikura/quail egg combo and I could probably eat 10 of these and still want more. The only downside is I wish they had a larger sushi roll selection and a la carte options. The drinks are also all fabulous and very pretty. They have an expansive sake list too. They recently reopened their happy hour menu (5-6pm) that is $2 off all alcohol and a few eats (karaage chicken, tuna crispy rice nigiri, salmon nigiri, etc). On Fridays they usually have really cool specials and they always post them on their Instagram. I would recommend getting a reservation since seating inside is limited, but you could also try to walk in and get bar seating as well. All of the servers we've gotten in the past have all been so kind and attentive. The ambiance is dark, moody, and upbeat. This would be a great spot for a date night. read more

I ordered the Shio Ramen on Grubhub for pick up, and what I received did not even include broth. The noodles were covered in oil and a black, burnt tasting powder. 1/5 stars since the ribs were good, but I give the ramen 0/5 stars. This was $20 on Grubhub. We made reservations for Thursday evening at 7 PM and found it fairly crowded, but with spots still available. The venue is intimate and decor is nice, perhaps our favorite part of the experience. We waited a bit for service, a bit of a miss. It was a wait before our server came. I ordered tuna onigiri and robatayaki (squid as the red snapper that is so photographed in these reviews was unavailable) and hubs ordered chirashi. The onigiri comes out. We're perplexed as how to approach it. We're looking around and I see others picking at it, using a soy sauce bowl to dip. Unfortunately, there's no soy sauce bowl or server around. Blah. I attack it nonetheless. It works. Taste wise, it is very average. The scallions were very mild and it was more rice than anything. A soy sauce bowl would have done wonders. I ended up spreading the wasabi using chopsticks. The squid comes as I'm working on the onigiri. Hubs has a few bites as he waits for his dish. I've finished and start on the squid for a bit before the chirashi arrives. The squid is colder than I'd like, considering it was off the flames. Hubs thought it was his favorite item. His chirashi was very average. It was an elaborate presentation like the onigiri, but nothing that left us wowed. Service wasn't attentive for us. Another couple sat next to our table as we were wrapping up and they were offered greater service and attention, offered tap versus sparkling as we were given regular tap, without so much as an offer for something else. Yes! I believe they have a private room that can be booked that you see when you get to the top of the steps.
Is it inappropriate to bring a kid (13) for an early dinner to this restaurant?
Just get a table or sit by the sushi making. I think a teenager would have fun.
