Wow. Before I visited Udupi, I had never tried South Indian cuisine. After I visited Udupi, I knew I had to try it again. My friend and I came here for lunch, and after reading Yelp reviews, I knew I was getting me a dosa. I ordered the SPINACH MASALA DOSA, a thin rice crepe smeared with spinach and stuffed with spiced potatoes, served with sambar (tamarind soup), rasam (vegetable soup) and coconut chutney, for $6.25. The dosa was SO DOSALICIOUS. The spinach was scattered throughout the delicately spiced potatoes, giving the innards a wholesome spinachy taste without any bitterness. The crepe was thin but dense enough to lend balanced texture to the potatoes. It got a bit soggy in the end, but Indian crepes are a brilliant idea. The chutney and sambar were decent, although I enjoyed the rasam the most because it was the least powerful in taste. I tried dipping the dosa in both the chutney and sambar...but I can't remember if that tasted good or not. In general, I tend not to like the taste of chutney. Too sour for me. My friend ordered the SAAG PANEER, cottage cheese cubes in mild-spiced spinach gravy, served with rice, poori (deep fried and fluffy whole wheat bread), raita (yogurt with onions and cucumber), and papad (thin crispy rice cracker), for $8.95. The saag paneer was creamy and not too runny. A good blend of spinach and spices surrounding the cheese, although I didn't really taste the cheese. The raita poori was really fun to eat, and the papad tasted like a Chinese shrimp rice cracker! Tasty and affordable. And food served on a metal tray. The best trio. Oh. I love trying new foods, and I actually quite like Indian food because the spices and aromas are so wonderful, even if you are just eating vegetarian meals. I particularly like South Indian food as I have been so fortunate to being introduced to. My sister recommended this place in Berkeley and I was excited when I read they had dosas. We dragged our parents out, as they would probably never eat this kind of food on their own and it was such a good meal! Started with a mango lassi ($2.99) and an order of samosas ($4.50 for 2). We split the samosas among 4 people and for an appetizer I thought it was pretty good as these are kind of filling. If you're here with more guys, you might want your own samosa as they're delicious and addicting. The curried potato/pea filling was savory and I loved both of the sauces that it came with (the red one was sweeter and slightly spicy while the green one was milder and almost mint-like with a bit of tang.) Mango lassi was good but nothing out of the ordinary from other places I've had. Then we got an order of the south indian thali (~$11), which came with a fluffy bread looking cloud thing (it's kind of like...the shell of a poofy piece of bread...with no bread filling inside, so it's quite deceiving!) and rice with 10 little sample cups of curries, chutneys, soups. I wish I could tell you what they each were, but who am I kidding? I'm no expert in this food. All I know is that I wish we had some more bread or naan to dip with everything because all the sauces were DELICIOUS. Some were spicy, some were sweet, some were tangy, and it was just a flavor smorgasbord. Luckily, we also ordered the paper masala dosa (~$10), which is literally 2 feet long and spanned our ENTIRE table, I kid you not. It's a giant rolled up rice and lentil crepe that breaks easily enough yet still has enough hold that you can sandwich the curried potatoes between a piece and pick it up with your bare hands. Oh yea, that was the other thing. We tried using spoons/forks, but honestly, the easiest way is to pick up the sauces and food with your hand. (So bring hand sanitizer, for those of you germaphobes!) The paper dosa was split amongst the four of us and we used it to dip in our thali sauces too as well as the coconut and spicy chutney that it came with. I liked both chutneys quite well as they balanced each other out. Cool and sweet vs hot and spicy. I wish I had more room to get another regular dosa which would have been much smaller (kind of still an understatement) using the same lentil crepe to wrap veggies and potato fillings. The spinach dosa looked pretty delicious, but sadly we didn't get to try it. The food is excellent! But I reserve a start because I haven't had much of this cuisine before to be an expert on the tastes. Also, the service wasn't great. Not terrible but not great. No water refills and they kept bringing us food without clearing the table of food that was done. There was hardly anyone there during lunch too. And I wish they had brought us the paper dosa earlier to dip with our thali. We were almost done with it before it came out. But in all honesty, the thali was super worth it. The paper dosa just looks cool, but I think I would have wanted the smaller dosas with fillings inside next time. And they're cheaper too! First time I went there with my husband, the potato filling in his dosa was old and nasty. Second time, I went by myself, and the waitress wasn't even Indian -- which shouldn't matter, except she couldn't answer the most basic questions about the thali. I give this restaurant a resounding "whatever." Do you want some truly KICKASS South Indian food? Get yourself down to Tirupathi Bhima's in Milpitas. It is sooo worth the drive. Dosa Heaven, for a meager price. 5 stars for the dosa alone: gluten-free, vegan, scrumptious. Top it off with their coconut sauce, and we have heaven in the mouth. The okra Bindhi dish disappoints with an overload of chunky tomatoes and other strangeness, and only a small array of okra playing hide-and-seek in the midst of all the chunky madness (I seek them out, and enjoy the tiny morsels of delight). More okra, less other-stuff. Less tomato taste, please! Same goes for the chickpea dish, which has a sort of tomato sauce (not-too-powerfully-tomato), but the only chunk in this one is thankfully the chickpea. The delight on my eating partner's face while eating the chickpeas brings a since of yum into my being, so I munch-on. And, pleasantly, my belly feels yummy afterward. Mango juice brings a sense of eroticism to the "mild" spice, and works well before and after the meal. Yes, it is true. Chilli cheese Dosa is great if you like cheese, sometimes the cheese is taken too seriously. Their curry Dosa is like a lasagna on an appam.Absolutely delicious. They have brown pooris made with wheat flour which is healthier(or that's how I convince myself) unlike all purpose flour used in other places. Palak paneer with poori was a great choice. This place is the only vegetarian Indian place in Berkeley. That being said, Udupi is for me, as close to home as Indian food can get in Berkeley. Folks who are in love with House of Curries and Naan N Curry are most certainly deluded because that is NOT Indian food. I've been a regular for the past 4 years, coming on my own, with friends, family and co-workers. The Onion-Chili Utthapam is delicious (ADD TOMATO), as is the Mysore Masala Dosa, the Avial, Chole Bhature and the Spring Dosa. On special occasions, I like the House Curry Dosa. Although there were some management issues that led to a decline in the taste of the food, things have been looking up since the start of the year and I'm happy once again with the quality of the food. The water has also started tasting decent again. The service is excellent and the staff is attentive. They even remember my order nowadays which only makes me want to come back here more. read more

Qualifications: the vegetable curries come with rice, aachar, raita, papadum, and poori. We got the vegetable korma. We also got the chapati chana, which comes with two wheat chapatis, raita, and aachar. Curries can be mild, medium, or spicy. Extra chapatis are $2 for two. Came here with a friend who was very well versed in Indian food. Evidently, this is variety of from the southern part of India. We had a masala dosa and a Udupi special dosa. The masala dosa was pretty much potatoes and the Udupi dosa used some sort of unidentifiable vegetables on the inside. Vegetarian, obviously. Décor was adequate and service was fine. Fun and delicious vegetarian southern Indian food. I have been to Udupi Palace a few times now and I always leave satisfied. Their he food is tasty, their portions are big, and their service, while not perfect, is adequate for the small restaurant. Their specialties are the crepe-like stuffed dosas. Their chole bhatura with puffy fried bread and chick peas is really tasty too. If you are extra hungry, be sure to try their medhu fried lentil donuts and their idly rice patties which can be included with your main dish in a combo. All of the food is tasty and playful: they include lots of different sauces and stews that you can mix and match with the different breads. As an omnivore, I never miss meat here. It is a unique and conveniently accessible Berkeley dining destination. Absolutely delicious. read more

I have hit up all three of the Bay Area Udupis on a semi-regular basis. These are some of the best dosas around, served with sour-sweet chutneys, cooling raita, and tangy dal. If you're in SF, pass on Dosa and head here instead...costs less and tastes better (however, the plates at Dosa are fancier, so if that's worth paying ~$5 extra then be my guest). Special Rava Masala dosa is my favorite, although I like the Paneer Peas Utthappam and Chana Bhatura. This is my favorite Indian restaurant in Berkeley. Scratch that, I haven't actually tried any of the other Indian restaurants in Berkeley because this one is SO good, my absolute favorite place for a thali anywhere I've tried. I've nibbled off friend's dosas and kadai bhindi which were delicious too, but my go-to dish is the thali. This place is pretty expensive when you think about it- 10 bucks for one type of curry? Whew, that's crazy! But at 11, you can opt for the thali (which is essentially a tasting platter of their south indian masalas and chutneys) that will be sure to stuff you twice over. I love their carrot halwa and chai for dessert as well. All in all, this is a fantastic spot. My only complaint is that I would prefer a bit more spice, as this restaurant caters more to a western palate in terms of heat level. read more

I'm not vegetarian so a dinner of just potatoes was out of the norm for me haha. We had 5 adults and went overkill (we ordered way too much and also mango lassi drinks) and came out to $100. The bad. The bathroom is gross. Like the grossest. It's a one person at a time tiny gross room shared by Udupi and the Mediterranean place next door. So to wash your hands you have to experience gross...almost enough to leave. And heaven forbid you have to use the toilet. If you don't go back there then great...but what do employees use? One other cleanliness issue was seeing a spoon fall and the waitress picked it up and put it on a different table (then retrieved it) but the table wasn't wiped down after as it was set up for diners read more

Really, should be 3.5 stars...and the only deduction is for atmosphere - and maybe service because they're barely there - but there when you need them so not sure that's a bad thing. This was our second trip and it was better than the first somehow. This time I was SUPER-hungry and walked in on Friday night at 7:45 - no wait and tables not full. The okra was absolutely perfect...the flavors in the dish, scooped up in the chapati it came with was utterly satisfying. I kept watching my husband eating his vegetable curry and not able to get it into his mouth fast enough...plus trying to hog up all the dosa...back and forth, back and forth....STOP! That's mine! Try their Aloo Muttar or Chana Masala and get rice and bread and have yourself a carb-filled extravaganza! Use the bread as a scoop to make little rice-and-stew sandwiches, the dip it into that coconut creme sauce that comes with it. Get extra rice - you won't regret it. The samosas were huge and flavorful, and the curries were simply scrumptious. Go here for dosas! Since this is south Indian fare, their curries aren't your typical House of Curries gooey slop - it's more of a chunkier curry with more ingredients and less sauce. I think I prefer it this way too. It's all served in metal bowls that you'd find an Indian household or actually just on the streets of India - nice touch. The palak paneer is not very goopy, but actually just piles of cooked spinach, paneer, and spices. There really wasn't any "sauce" at all. Good in my book. Lentil donuts looked just like donuts, but didn't taste like lentils. It was more like an actual donut made from ground lentils instead of batter... which was weird. It went well with the cutneys though. Chana batura was also very chunky with mostly beans and tomatoes - very little sauce content. I thought it was better this way because I tasted all the ingredients instead of being snubbed with little food and lots of sauce. My friend and I came here for lunch on a Friday, and it was surprisingly more crowded than it appears outside! SERVICE: is so~so here. Though I can't fully blame them since there were only 2 servers, and probably 8 seated tables, so they were very busy! However, when they had the chance, they did refill our water, and seemed friendly. FOOD: Pretty darn good! 1) Samosas (5/5) - Their samosas are big, flaky, warm, and overall delicious. It comes with two sauce, as usual - the green chutney sauce, and a sweet red tamarind sauce. The chutney could have used with some more seasoning/flavor, but that's alright since I absolutely love eating my samosas with the tamarind sauce. The contrast of the spiced potatoes in the samosas with the sweet sauce is definitely a winner! 2) Paper Masala Dosa (4/5) - I've got to admit, I've only had dosa one other time at Dosa on Valencia in SF, and I loved it! Instead of filling the dosa itself with the potatoes, they gave us the potatoes on the side in a bowl, which I enjoyed more since it was easier to eat. The dosa itself was a bit crispy, thin, and just as you would expect a paper dosa to be - tasted delicious as well. The only downfall was the sauce this dish came with. The masala sauce was great, but the other white sauce remained untouched by the two of us. The soup also tasted great! Overall, I will definitely be back to try their other dishes! read more

Okay so I heard that there are two locations! One in the city and one in Berkeley, but with me living in Berkeley I decided to come here. First thing is first, you walk in here and you're greeted by a rather dull, simplistic restaurant. Let me be clear, this is a good sign for an Indian restaurant. It means they focus on the food rather than the decor. I came here with my family and we split a dosa, a pancake and each got channa bhatura. Really though, all you need is the channa bhatura because it is to die for. I got mine spicy which definitely made the experience even better. A large bhatura, a huge bowl of channa, and a whole kick to flavor? This is it people, unless SFs location has got better channa bhatura, I'm coming here. However, objectively, I was let down by the other items which made me give it 4 stars. Sometimes they say to be adventurous, I'm gonna say stay safe and get what you know is good. read more

This is one of the best Indian restaurants in the world. 7 stars if I could give it that. Period. The dosas are tasty, well balanced between the crispiness of the crepe and the spiced fillings inside (most of the options are vegetarian as I remember them). The sampler is also a dish not to be missed: a mix of 7 or 8 little dishes, pour it onto rice or naan or one of those large fried breads (pictured in the second photo), yum. Not overly goopy or creamy or rich or mushy like you'd find at a number of Indian restaurants. They also have these pancakes that are really unique and delicious. I ordered a Spinach Masala Dosa They asked me how spicy I'd like it, I honestly couldn't tell a difference from my "Medium" spicy to my friend's "Very" spicy, so that was a little weird. The dosa was pretty much a bunch of potatoes, not sure if that's how all dosas are, but i felt like the spinach was lacking. The sauce they provided was awesome, definitely need for flavor with the dosa. Also, the soup they provided was very tasty and a good amount spiciness (caught me by surprise) :D Overall, this place was alright, but I'm also not a big vegetarian. I've been here a couple of times and the service is always soooo slow - no matter when you come, busy or not. My favorite is probably the paper dosa, just the plain one. I like the white (coconut?) dipping sauce the best. I've also had the samosa which was pretty good. The vegetable curry which was not that great.
