I love you, Udupi! This place is awesome! South Indian cuisine is one of my favorites but many of Indian restaurants around where I live only offer just well known "Indian food" like Tandoori chicken and something americanized Indian food. But this place is real! I went for lunch, didn't plan to eat lunch since I wanted to have dosa there, but as soon as I heard unlimited dosa comes with buffet, so I went for buffet, and omg, they are so good. Dosa tasted really good, they put potatoes in it, I had like three big dosas ;) And their chutneys, especially mint chutney and tamarind chutney were really good. On the day I went there, they had Okra curry, which is one of my favorite curries, and it was really good. I wish I live close by this place, so I could have lunch here more often!! read more

Decent dosa & South Indian fix - there are very few places in the valley that can satisfy that. Buffet is pretty solid, some dishes are better than others. I used to be a regular at Udupi but it had gone a bit down hill. I decided to give the weekend buffet another try and wow has it improved! I didn't recognize any of the staff, but the restaurant's decor was the same. I'm guessing it's changed ownership since I was last there years ago? One improvement is that every item on the buffett is clearly marked as vegan or not. They also had new little dishes for the chutneys (very handy!) and the papaddum was fresh. And they had plenty of napkins available (a prior issue given my love of spice)! For the main buffet area, they had the usual veggie soup and rice, but also had excellent "hush puppies" (my simplest comparison) - little fried veggie balls with what I believe is chickpea flour. I engulfed them. The soup was good too - not too spicy but very fresh tasting. Much to my delight, the buffet had both of my favorites - chana masala and Dal. Other vegan items included coconut-coated green beans, an eggplant curry dish and veggie Manchurian (more/different veggie balls but in a sauce). All was great, but the chana masala stood out the most to me. The flavor had lots of nuance - a bit savory with a cinnamon-like flavor, but nicely heated/spiced. They also had a vegan flat bread, which is great for sopping up the curry sauce. The buffet also still comes with a dosa (rolled crepe stuffed with potatoes and other veggies). This was a little less exciting. It was fairly small and only lightly stuffed in the center. I probably could have asked for another, but considering it's six hours later and I'm still stuffed, it was all I needed. One other major improvement - they kept the ice water flowing. I used to have to beg for water (and it usually only had a cube or two of ice). I'm glad to see Udupi is back on my "go to" list. I will definitely be back! read more

I was really craving masala dosa and ordered a few items from here: Masala dosa (comes with sambar and chutney), idli (also comes with sambar and chutney), and out of curiosity, idli Manchurian. I used to eat fried idlis as a kid in India so I thought it would be similar but in a nice spicy sauce. Masala Dosa: This was delicious, very mild, the potato filling was nice and creamy. Idli: Soft,fluffy. Tasty Idli Manchurian: Just no, the sauce was just way too sweet and tasted like straight up ketchup Coconut chutney: I was actually disappointed. It was very under salted and lacked flavor. I didn't really taste any coconut at all. I felt like it needed a kadipatta flavor, maybe ginger too Sambar: This was really not good. Now having grown up in Mumbai I know restaurants there tend to make it sweeter than the South but I just found the sambar to be bland, and missing that nice tamarind flavor. I would come back for the masala dosa but I feel like if they tweaked their recipes a little more and maybe added more salt, this could be very good. read more

Finally made it. I was on the last day of a Groupon deal (FYI 10% cash back on Yelp too) and this was in my way home so I stopped in 10 minutes before they closed. People were still dining in and other came after me as well, so it was pretty chill. I approached an employee and let him know I wanted to order takeout. I perused the menu while he helped others pick up their orders and chose to get samosas and gobi manchurian, been craving that dish for a while. He was nice, commented to me "oh, you know what you want"; Yup, I have my favorites and I do know what I want. Took about 10 minutes or so and I got my food. My items were packaged neatly and I found out at home that they gave me a container of rice as extra, cool. I tried a few pieces of the fried cauliflower, oh so good. It really does remind me of vegetarian orange chicken, and the spice level on it is real nice. I didn't get to eat the rest until the next day, along with the samosa, but both were delicious reheated and I love the array of sauces: spicy mint chutney, sweet tamarind, and mild raita (yogurt). One of the worst Indian restaurants I have ever been to. We were in the area and craving masala dosa, decided to go to Udupi based on Yelp reviews. They had the weekend buffet and apparently dosa is part of the buffet. Had no idea somebody can cook such lackluster South Indian food, Everything on the buffet menu tasted terrible. Tofu Manchurian looked like cat vomit . Masala dosa was thick, not crispy, and the potatoes inside just had turmeric and salt, no additional flavor. Sambar tasted weird too. Only Kheer was edible and the tea was okay. I felt bad for the servers, they tried their best, but food was inedible, I don't think I will ever go back. Restaurant was not clean either. This place is dirty. I can't believe they pass any health inspection. The restaurant floors needed to be swept there was a bug on the wall in the dining room and the bathroom had not been cleaned. You MUST try the dosa. It's amazing. I will admit I have never had a bad dosa, but their dosa is truly the perfect thickness, perfect brownness and perfect crispiness and taste. I have been here a few times before, and please don't let the vegetarianism of it dissuade you. It is worth a stop! The lunch buffet is lovely, and have I mentioned the dosa? Udupi is AMAZING! Their menu is completely vegetarian with many vegan options. Everything I got was spectacular, especially the gobi manchurian which is a fried cauliflower served with rice. I tried the rasam soup and it was surprisingly spicy. The vegetable briyani was perfect and a very large portion. The samosa chaat was perfect as expected. I also tried the spinach dosa which was massive! The dosa was my least favorite but everything was so wonderful! I look forward to the next time I am in Phoenix, this is my new favorite restaurant and there are so many items on their menu I want to try. We decided to try this place based on yelp reviews. The service was pretty good, fast and servers were nice and friendly. Food came out really fast after placing the order. But we found the food to be just alright, not very impressive. Uttapam was okay, but it felt like the batter was not fermented enough. If they take care of that, I think it will taste much better. Sambhar and chutneys were good. We also had bisibele bath, it was okay, but I have had really delicious and more authentic ones in chandler. The food presentation was very appealing though. We also had aloo paratha which was also nothing special. We came here with very high expectations of authentic south indian tastes and flavors based on yelp reviews and hence the dissappointment. Buffet style, any questions, drinks or additional items were thru her. The food was ok, and the amount of options wasn't too bad. The issue was, that my friend saw a mouse running from the kitchen to an unused area across the hallway. And, when she brought it up to the hostess, she just shrugged it off. We went here on an afternoon in September of 2018 when we were in Arizona for our Labor Day weekend trip. We were a group of 7 and it was open on a Labor Day Monday which worked out perfectly for us. When you search them on google maps and Yelp. It shows Monday they are open, when you go to restaurant the timing on the door shows they are open, in fact they are not. Management of restaurant suck. This restaurant is fantastic. It is a modest cafe serving amazing authentic indian food. The Samosa's and Medhu Vada were delicious appetizers. We had the Vegetable Vindaloo and South Indian Thali (a sampler platter), which was amazing. The layers of flavors were exquisite. The food was fresh and tasted home made. The meal was wrapped up with Carrot Halwa and Rasmalai. we highly recommend this restaurant. By the way, I'm not a vegetarian and I do enjoy meat dishes. I called ahead to inquire about ordering from the menu during the lunch hour. The girl who answered said that if it's not busy they can accommodate this request, but when it's busy, they cannot. Luckily for me, it was a slow day and they were able to accommodate me. I wanted to try their Gobi Manchurian and I also inquired if they could make an Aloo Saag (spinach and potatoes) vegan, which is not on the menu. They agreed to make this dish for me as well. So far, so good with the accommodation factor. I also added an order of poori (it's a puffy bread) because I cannot resist the leavens. I inquired if Basmati rice came with the dishes. The girl told me that it came with plain white rice. I again inquired if this was a basmati rice, to which she sharply replied, "I've never heard of that. We have plain white rice." Really? You work in an INDIAN restaurant and have never heard of one of the most basic and common Indian dishes? What do think they're selling? Uncle Ben's? *breathe* I arrived and indeed, aside from 1 other table, the place was empty. I browsed the buffet to see if I was missing anything and I didn't feel that I was. They have several vegan options, but nothing that looked appetizing. I was so glad that I got to order from the menu. The girl who took my phone order came up to ring me out. I took a quick opportunity to look at their menu to see what they called their rice. Well, lookey lookey what we have here - a description of basmati rice. You know I pointed this out, right? She goes, "Oh. Well, I've never heard anyone call it that before." Oookay. *insert side eye* Then there was the girl who was sweeping the same area of the floor for like 5 minutes. She finished sweeping the rest of her area, which I assumed made her famished (understandably), then she paraded right on over to the buffet and proceeded to fix a plate for herself. From dirt to food. No washing of the hands, no Germ-x, no nuthin! Did I mention how happy I was to not be eating from that buffet?? On to the food. GOBI MANCHURIAN: Battered and deep fried cauliflower doused in a sweet and spicy chili sauce. I requested this dish extra spicy. It was very yummy. I wasn't as crisp as I'd hoped, but this could have been due to the fact that it was a carry-out order and it may have gotten soggy from the condensation after being enclosed. Either way, crisp or limp, it was still a very tasty dish. ALOO SAAG: I requested it vegan and extra spicy. It was not extra spicy and I questioned if it was very because it had a creamy look to it. I did a taste-test. I didn't taste or smell weird (non-vegan-y); my tummy will let me know if I've been bamboozled. This dish was just ok. It lacked the sabor with which Aloo Saag is traditionally made, and it was not at all spicy; not even a teeny weenie bit. It wasn't bland, but it was certainly lacking. Being that this item it not on their menu and they were doing me a favor by making it, I will not hold this against them. I will just stick to their menu items on any future visits. POORI: The bread was very fresh and well-prepared. The portions were large. Prices were reasonable. They have no vegan desserts, but you can find some 2 blocks north at Green. They lost stars due to the waitress/ cashier's bad attitude and the sanitation concern (c'mon lady!). read more

Every time we drive by Udupi Cafe, we think about stopping in & finally we got the chance to! We were really hoping for the buffet, but they only have that in the morning (11am-3pm daily). After browsing the menu, we opted for the vegetable manchurian & the South Indian Thali. The Vegetable Manchurian was really tasty & was a very large portion (it was definitely priced well considering the quantity); the manchurian was a not very spicy, which I appreciated as I'm not a huge fan of spicy food (silly, I know, considering South Indian food is always really spicy). The South Indian Thali was very large as well & contained really spicy items ... It was also worth the money. The service was good - it wasn't very busy on the week night that we went on & they had a new waitress - she asked us a couple of times if she could get anything out of the way when there was clearly still food remaining on all the plates - we didn't mind as she did note it was her first day. I love cow and have to admit my knowledge of vegetarian and vegan foods is extremely limited. I was pretty skeptical of enjoying a meal here and thankfully happily surprised. I choose Indian food over Ethiopian any day of the week so Udupi was the choice to explore and also if you want northern Indian flavors. Located in a strip mall in South Scottsdale, it's not a place that stands out or calls to you. Once you step inside, the food will do all the talking. Staff is sweet and knowledgeable if you aren't sure what to order. I came for dinner and my top choices are the mixed vegetable pakora, paper dosai, gobi manchurian and the vegetable briyani. Servings are ridiculously generous that you end up with leftovers for everyone. The dosa is lightly-fried bread (think of it as a crepe on steroids) that has the perfect crunch. The order comes with 3 sauces that are just lovely accompaniments for flavor. The pakora is equivalent to fried tempura and I love that they include jalapenos. My ultimate favorite is the briyani bursting with so much flavor. I took the leftovers home and added steak and sriracha to fill my big girl appetite. If you have room, finish off with a cup of chai and the madras special payasam (kheer). Rasmalai is another wonderful choice for dessert. How do you go wrong with homemade cottage cheese balls dipped in condensed milk and rose water?!!! Overall, it is inexpensive dining for good food. I would come back and try the lunch buffet, malasa, and paneer despite lacking the meat component. For a sliver of bites, I almost thought I could go vegeterian with these kinds of niblets.
