I was craving Indian curry and decided to drive to Bombay House in Tempe, but I arrived at 2:25 p.m. and found out the restaurant closes at 2:30 p.m., so I was too late. After doing a search online, I discovered an Indian grocery store with a restaurant inside, which turned out to be a vegetarian place. Maybe it was meant to be, since I'm trying to eat more healthfully because of my type 2 diabetes and kidney issues. I tried the samosa and curry, and both were very good. The servers were also very kind and welcoming. The only part I didn't like was being asked to pay the tip before eating. I left 10%. An extra star for the prices here. We love visiting here whenever we are in that area. In fast we almost go every time we visit that side of the town. The reason being they have some really good fast and is vert reasonable too, Few seating tables and even the store but we usually get the seat to sit and eat. My wife and I have been coming here for years, and we love the food! It's a great family owned restaurant and grocery store, and it really reminds my wife of the chaat she enjoyed back home in India. Anytime we are craving some nice cholle bhature or some freshly fried samosas, this is the first place we think of. Service always comes with a smile, and they always take great care of us. They also have a wide selection of Indian groceries, so we can get our shopping done at the same time. For Indian food this tasty, you really can't beat the prices and quantities here! Friends. If you are reading review that the service is good anywhere, then it is absolutely false, and should be written by the business owners itself with fake ids. The owner (guy taking payments and he comes inside kitchen to assist also) has got anger issues. He is very rude with the customers. Behaves inappropriate. We purchased food here and sat down in a table to eat. We also had a to-go order of Chole Batura. The owner started to shout high when we asked if we could eat the togo item along with the other items ordered. He was not ready to give a spoon for Ras malai ordered. He shouted so loud and terrified my kids. He asked us to leave the restaurant. He did not refund the amount around $60 for the food which was already paid. I've been a customer of LIttle India when they first opened; several owners ago. Under the current ownership, the food is truly exceptional as is the care given to the flavors and the final product. The owners are very caring and take an immense amount of pride in what they have to offer. As an Indian, I realize that each Indian household has a certain preference with the level of spices used, interpretations or heat used in each dish. In India, this depends not only from one family to the next but certainly from one state to the next. I would suggest how you like your food cooked with specificity so that the hard working people in the kitchen know how to prepare your dishes. Even after this if one is unhappy, please speak to the staff and express your concerns so that they can address them. They're a terrific spot and one that I'd highly recommend. Little India is a small spot with grocery cum chaat place. Being near to the Univ it probably attracts a lot of students, but its definitely small. All of their dishes are either hit or a miss deal. We went there for dinner and ordered Pav Bhaji, Dahi puri, Sev Puri, Chole Batura, Panipuri and Vada Pav. In all of them, Dahi puri tasted the best. The curry quantities for Pav bhaji and Batura was so less and wasn't enough at all. When my friend went up to ask for some extra pickle, he was told, we were already been given one, its not like we weren't paying for it though. This review is exclusively for the food served at this place and not the grocery isles or the store in particular. As u enter this place the place is stuffed with Indian grocery and isles all around, moving is a little difficult with the items kept all around. As u enter u have to collect a blue menu card if u want to eat something. Towards the end of the store, a step of table and chairs have been placed and u can find the kitchen. One can pick from the menu and handover the card to one of the ladies in the kitchen. I can easily tell I have tasted almost the entire menu here and could give feedback about every single item. To start with their samosas are really good, this savory dish is amazing. Its crisp and the stuffing is very tasty. Samosa chaat is sister food of samosa where they have different lentils and flavors to eat the samosa with. Their chole batura is alright and I am not a big fan of it, may be if u eat it fresh when they serve it, might taste better. I have taken a to go and it is alright. The bada pav, the bada is good but the pav they use is a sandwich bread which is sweet so its not that great. The Raj Kachori is really fascinating to see and eat. Looks good and is equally delicious. The paratha's paneer and aloo are pretty authentic and the pickles they serve with is straight from India. This place is a total authentic Indian chaat, its very close to what u could find in India. Only draw back is the cleanliness of the place, it looks cramped and crowded. It's become our Friday ritual to stop by here and pick up dinner. I believe the owners are Gujarati and so the food is closer to what I grew up eating in Maharashtra than a lot of Punjabi style Indian restaurants. My go to is either the makai kofta with chapatis or pav bhaji. My husband is a big fan of the vada pav. The samosas are amazing as well! The prices are incredibly reasonable so it's easy to try a few different dishes. The aloo tikki chaat is another firm favorite. They have homemade theplas as well, as a decent array of mithais (sweets). Definitely worth checking out if you are a fan of Indian food and maybe want to try more home style cooking. read more

So first the management has changed over past 1 month or so. I live in Mesa for past 10 years and always like Little India so this is the first time I felt I need to write a review. I wasnt happy about the food at all. The supposedly "Valley Famous" Samosas do not taste good. The supposedly "Valley Famous" Chole Bhatura has a bad taste to it. I think with management change the cool has also changed as it used to be the previous aunty who cooked before and now the food tastes bad. The prices have doubled with decrease in taste and quality. The new management says now they have the kitchen as the best and most clean environment than before but what is the point if good does not taste good. I visited this store after a very long absence because I relocated to a different part of the valley. I happened to be in Tempe and I was hungry. I decided to stop there to eat. I was pleasantly surprised. I think the ownership has changed hands probably more than once. The store has always had a small cafe inside. It has undergone a change in appearance and its order placement has been modernized. They have new tables and seats that looked clean and nice. One can place order on their screen and enter the table number before paying with a credit card. Their person helped me place the order since the system was new to me. After I placed my order, my food arrived within just a few minutes. The food was tasty. In the store and the cafe I felt that the prices have gone up, but haven't we experienced this everywhere? The service has vastly improved. At the checkout I didn't have to wait for someone. This store has undergone a big positive change in the cafe. The store has a good selection of items (food and non food). I didn't spend a lot of time shopping, so I may have missed some details but I was happy with what I saw. The frozen section appeared to have some empty areas. I may have just caught them before their order arrived. Will definitely visit again when I am in east valley. read more

Little grocery store in Baseline with a restaurant where you can savor Indian chaats, Pani Puri, samosas, Vegetarian Thali curries etc the items are reasonably priced anywhere from $3.99 to $6.99 They also sell a variety of sweets and frozen parathas. Over the years I have tried everything on the menu and the taste never disappoints the little seating area gets crazy on weekends and the wait is long but the food is what keeps me coming back. I visited on a Sunday lunch time and there was a large family gathering happening but I ordered and was served quickly and everything was awesome! I am not Indian and chaat is a new experience for me so I was googling the menu, embarrassingly. But I saw chole bhature on others' plates and it looked SO yummy so I asked a very friendly and helpful employee for the name of the dish. Don't let this simple hidden treasure keep you from coming here. This is tucked in a grocery store with authentic spices and cooking for an affordable meal! It's like having street eats! :) You just grab one of the yellow sheets and mark what you want and then leave it in the basket. The staff will take the order while you sit. Sip on some water while waiting. The last time I came here I ordered the Aloo Tikki Chaat. This is vegetarian dish made of the Tikki (potato patty) made of potatoes, green chili, corn flour, lentils, chili powder and other spices) served with chopped onions, green chutney (spicy sauce), tamarind chutney (sweet sauce) and yogurt. I also ordered Special #1: rice pulao (mixed veggie rice), bhatura (equivalent to a Mexican tortilla), matar paneer (cheese-like curds) and pickle (pickled veggies that probably the inexperienced palate will not be able to master). Met up with Helen Y for something new, Indian street food (Chaat). She has a great knowledge about ethnic foods and what they are so I knew this was going to be great fun! We ordered just about 1 of everything off the menu.. as the plates kept coming and coming it was clear that you could order one preparation of a dish and have the several looking and tasting very very similar. While very tasty many were allot alike. A real disappointment for me was the paratha.. it was extremely greasy and not very flavorful. I'm not sure if perhaps its a regional thing but I'm accustomed to something a bit lighter and slightly flaky. There was this other bread that reminded me of Indian Fry Bread (bhature), was so tasty! I would go back just for that alone! This was another great experience with Helen Y and her amazing taste! Looking forward to going back but not ordering as much now that I know sort of whats what. This review is solely based on the food served in the quaint little back kitchen area. First off, props to all the female workers in the back kitchen putting out great food. We had the pani puri, samosa chaat, dhokla, methi paratha, and choley bhatura. The pani puri was super flavorful, though the pani was really spicy. If you like spice, you'll love it! The samosa chaat was also really well made and quite well balanced in terms of flavor. I didn't personally get to taste the dhokla, but my friend seemed to love it. Choley bhatura came with two giant bhaturas and a good portion of choley on the side. It was very filling in terms of portion and tasted pretty good overall. Now, you should know that they make their methi parathas by hand. They were just so tasty! The methi paratha came with a side of pickle and yogurt. I have to admit I was super confused about how to order when I first walked in. You essentially go pick up a blue slip located next to the water and mark what you would like to order. Then you give the slip to someone in the back kitchen and they will bring your food out. After you're done eating, you go and pay at the front. The women in the back kitchen were very nice and really accommodating about our orders. I can't really comment on the owner at the front because he just rang our bill up without ever saying anything. Overall, this place has GREAT food and is definitely the place to go for Indian dishes. read more

This place is really awesome for Indian Chaat cravings. Every Chaat item on the menu is made fresh. By far, theirs is the only chaat I liked in Arizona. I had Samosa Chaat and Dhokla. The flavors of the Samosa Chaat was very well balanced and it did not leave me bloated at all. A single serving of Dhokla comes with 3 pieces and mint chutney. It tasted like the ones my granny used to make back in India. Be it the Dhokla or the mint Chutney, both were Ahh-mazze-ingg! I would definitely go again and again and again coz the prices are really low for the quality of food served. Come on! Who would get a home cooked snack this cheap? Tip: grab the blue sheet at the front, fill in the quantity of the snack you want and give it in the kitchen located at the rear end of the store. The seating space is relatively less so, you can't take large crowd with you. I walked in and got a to-go, I had to just wait for like 10 minutes even when they had a lot of crowd. They do take phone orders as well, which you would have to pick up (they don't deliver). This store opens up to the Grocery section. Here's what they have: You would find lots of North Indian frozen veggies, refrigerated sweets, snacks, few masalas and Indian pickles. I did not find fresh vegetables though. Before having my first Bollywood-in-a-theatre experience in good ol' Tempe, I ended up here at Little India upon the recommendation of one of my colleagues. Little India, like many Indian shops in the Valley, also moonlights as a chaat house. "Chaat" is basically snack food - dozens of different dishes, all with a bit of a kick and real tasty (it's hard to screw up chaat, and if you do, then you REALLY suck and shouldn't be in business). At L.I., you go to the back of the store, pick up a slip which is printed out sushi-order style, pick what you want, and hand it through the open door to one of the girls scampering around in the kitchen. None of the dishes is more than 5 bucks (the majority being below $3), all of them vegetarian (which doesn't mean healthy, but whatever). It was 8:30 or so, and I hadn't eaten since lunchtime, and I'd worked out, so I was starvin' like Marvinder. I ordered the pav bhaji (curried potato dish with a bun - think of it as a Sloppy Joldeep), the puri chaat (hollowed thin dumplings filled with tamarind chutney, mint chutney, yogurt, chopped onions & cilantro, and other spices), and the chole bhatura (warm bowl of spicy garbanzo beans with what I can only describe is REAL Indian fry bread). So, well, not a healthy dinner, but I've been doing so well all year (almost three weeks long) that I thought I could indulge this night. Seating is limited here. You gotta remember you're in a grocery mart moonlighting as a snack house. Weekends can get really busy as the local Indian community fills in for some pre-Bollywood grubbin'. Water was self-serve with a stack of puny Dixie Cups next to a cooler (to be fair, there are fridges stacked with soda, etc). We waited for about 5 minutes before we got a table. Once we sat down, the food quickly appeared. All my dishes before me, I didn't even know where to begin. It was a LOT of food. I started tackling each of them, and they were all great: really tasty, aromatic, and mouthwatering, albeit maybe I'm feeling nostalgic for mom's food, but still. Good stuff all around. I enjoyed my meal - the three dishes together equaled $10 plus change, and I was about to burst (and I can shovel in a ton of food before saying mercy). So this chaat factory in the back I'd give 4 stars, but the place as a whole I'd give 3, as the selection of goods in the store part isn't nearly as plentiful as some other places in the Valley. It's called "chaat". Apparently, this means "street food". Sounds good to me. The first time I ever heard this term was when I started to look into this restaurant. I found out about this place from looking here at Yelp and seeing the high ratings. When we walked in, I was asking myself where the restaurant was. To find it, you go into the back of this little market and there are a few tables and chairs. You order by grabbing a card, ticking off the food you want and giving it to the server. By looking at the pictures on the wall, the meals don't seem that big. Seeing them in person after they are served doesn't help either. But, eating is believing--you get a LOT of delicious food for your money here. May I recommend the Chole Bhature? It's spiced chick peas in sauce with two BIG pieces of flat bread to eat it with. This will fill you up fast for $5.25. No meat here in the dishes. There's cheese, but all the food here is otherwise veggie. No matter--you'll enjoy it anyway. You can pay for your selections with the cashier in the front after receiving your food. I browsed through the menu and decided on one of the specials- bhatura, pickled veggies, rice, and mattar paneer. It was a good portion of each component, with the slightly greasy bhatura flatbread, piquant crisp vegetables, white rice, and richly flavored mattar paneer. The only negative about the mattar paneer was that the peas were overcooked, and thus grey and a bit mushy. They don't hold back on the heat, and for those that like more mild food, you've been warned! Service was pleasant from the front and the back. Prices are very reasonable. The special was $5.99 and I was full after only eating half my meal. I also grabbed a container of gulab jamun ($4.99) from the refrigerated dessert section which contained a lot of the sweet dumplings and was pretty good.
