Udipi is a vegetarian restaurant and has some wonderful authentic South Indian food. All the appetizers rock and I was surprised how good the Papdi chaat was! The Thaali is pretty nice (both kinds) with fresh made sambar and dosa each time that we've gone. The medu vada are highly recommended along with nearly all their dosa offerings. Parking is ample here and the ambience is very casual. One thing to note is that they do not make the naan in-house so one time that I got it with my curry was this tough frozen-to-roasted naan but when I talked to the manager they informed me that the wait staff was supposed to inform everyone that Naan isn't house made. They quickly gave me chapatis for replacement and it worked out well.

Parking: It has its own parking lot. Food: large quantity and absolutly delicious. the chutney that came with it complimented it so well Service: was fast but it was not during a lunch rush Ambience: very basic scenery but plenty of places to sit around

Good place to get dosa in Cary. They have a lot of options for dosa and other food items as well. The service was good and the ambiance is nice. We got Mysore masala dosa and regular masala dosa - both came with sambar and coconut chutney. The dosa and sambar were okay, it could be better. I wish they served peanut chutney as well.

I had a yearning for dosa, looked up places on Yelp, and found this one pretty close. I had lunch on a weekday a couple of days after the new years day and there just one or two customers. I chose a Andhra Special Dosai and it came out super fast, possibly because they weren't very busy but also had a lot of experience with dosas - they've got about a dozen different types of their menu. The dosa was great! It was extremely long so it might have been awkward to pick up. I didn't have a knife at first so I made do with my fork but eventually asked for a knife to help me devour it. The menu said it was was *paper thin* and it truly was! I've never had a dosa quite that thin before but it was very good. The server warned me that it was spicy - I've learned that spice tolerance varies but I have a pretty high tolerance. I was fine with the spice and probably could have gone a little hotter. I'll definitely come back again. They have a big menu and more than just dosas!

The vibe of this place feels like a little restaurant in India! It really takes you to the destination.

We love udupi cafe. The food never disappoints us. The entire staff is hardworking and amazing!! Though we try out other things on the menu our go to masala dosa and mango lasssi. The ambiance is ok but the food makes up for it.

Decent Dosai. Nothing outstanding, but decent food. This place is our go to for a South Indian food fix.

Ask the Community - Udupi Cafe

Do they still have a lunch buffet?

I was there at lunchtime and didn't see one.

Is it buffet only for lunch?

You can order or the menu but everything on the menu pretty much is in the buffet...

Does Udupi have vegan options? Have you tried any vegan/veganized options?

I'm assuming most of their foods are made with coconut milk rather than dairy. It seems like most of their selection would be vegan. They're very accommodating, I'm sure they'd be more than happy to go over what's on the buffet.

The atmosphere was lively with the number of people dining inside. Staff were very friendly and attentive. The food took a while to come out, but it was worth it. My friends and I got the Chicken Tikka Masala, Gobi Manchurian, Vegetable Samosa, Mango Lassi, and Garlic Naan. The Vegetable Samosa was good, but nothing mind-blowing. They skimped out on the Gobi Manchurian, which was so crispy and well-seasoned. Mango Lassi was solid, slightly tart compared to others I have had before. I loved the Chicken Tikka Masala! So much spice and sauce in the bowl. It also tasted great with the Garlic Naan. This is a fantastic restaurant with delicious food. I should try Nepali food instead of reverting to Indian food, but it was too tasty to deny. I recommend everyone comes here for lovely South Asian food.

We came on a Friday evening and had about a 20-minute wait, but it was absolutely worth it once we were seated. Service stood out right away. Our waiter checked on us regularly and made sure our water glasses were always full, which is a small thing but goes a long way during a busy night. We started with ginger tea, which was warm, fragrant, and a great way to kick off the meal. For food, we ordered two appetizers, along with the chicken korma and butter chicken, and everything was phenomenal. The flavors were rich and comforting. One detail I appreciated was that the rice came in individual servings instead of one large shared bowl, which made it easier for everyone at the table. Great food, attentive service, and worth the wait, we'll definitely be back!

BLUF: Overall, a great lunch! Will be returning to try more items on the expansive menu!…read more Details: I'd driven by "Flavors of India" many times in my daily Hillsborough Street commute. Just recently a friend and I decided to have lunch there as we are both big fans of Indian dishes. When I arrived for a late lunch, there was a larger party of 10-12 people being attended. I grabbed a smaller table and was presented with menus and fresh water soon after. Since we'd both reviewed the menu in advance, we ordered quickly: 1 x Methi Chicken, 1 Navarathan Kuma, 1 x Bullet Naan mild/medium - (more on the menu, see below). Both dishes and bread were delivered promptly. Everything was presented and served with a generous side of rice. It smelled wonderful! The Bullet Naan was cooked perfectly with just the right spice level! My Methi Chicken, which I'd never had before, was a stupendous blend of spices and chicken thighs with a good "heat level" for me. His Navarathan Kuma had excellent flavoring and was tasty. We both think the Kuma's spice level could have been higher - certainly a step up next time! Everything was priced reasonably for the locale. Service was attentive, even with the larger party in play. We will be returning to explore more of their interesting, varied menu. Be sure to check their hours on their web site: As of this writing, they are closed on Tuesdays. They open ~ 11:30 all other days. They have varying closing times from 21:30 - 22:00 depending on day-of-week. Also, to the left of FoI, there is a wonderfully stocked Indian grocer, "Royal India Mart". I dropped in after lunch. I was thoroughly impressed with the depth and range of products, the store's size and organization and fair prices. They had a full wall of refrigerated and frozen products as well as long aisles of many Indian staples. Everything is nicely shelved and organized. Once inside the grocer, you realize the restaurant and grocer share what is a a double occupant space in the small convenience mall where they are located. The grocer's floor plan is actually a large "L" shape and the restraint is maybe 20-25% of the entire double space. Now a bit about the menu: I review menus for new places so I can quickly hone into "what's calling". Unless you are well versed in India cuisine and spices, you should review the menu because there are no detailed dish descriptions provided - just dish name and price. I understand why they likely did this because the menu has an expansive depth and range of choices from across many regions. This wide range is _not_ something many Indian restaurants which I've seen execute. Explaining what's in every dish would have easily doubled the size of the menu's pages. Also, they do not serve a "lunch buffet" but that's fine with me as I really prefer to select one dish and focus on how that's prepared. Peace. Later.

When they finally came out, I was offered some pre chosen items for dine in. They were in a warmer and looked like they had been there for hours. I couldn't look at a menu. I had to pick what they offered. Strangest experience at a restaurant I've had in a long time. I left.

I set that aside and tried to avoid the moisture on the napkin my silverware was wrapped in. When I went to get food, most of it was covered which I guess is good, but to get to the food, it was awkward balancing the covers or having to place them on another covered tray to be able to serve myself. When I compare the food and environment here to other places that offer Indian cuisine buffets, for the $20 with tax I'd rather go to Kabab and Curry not too far from here on Hillsborough St. There is more food available, it is fresher, the environment overall seems more hygienic and well-organized, and the food has better flavor and seems less greasy at Kabab and Curry. The only difference is having to pay for parking or parking a bit further away for a free spot--but for what you pay at Curry Club and they only offer buffet over the weekend, Kabab and Curry is better and offers more value and is where I will probably go from now on. The only way Curry Club's buffet would make sense is if they brought the price down. I'd put their food quality about on par with China Queen's weekday Chinese buffet, but China Queen has the better sense to charge less for the quality and experience they offer their customers. If you're already in the plaza and it's convenient to drop in over the weekend, give Curry Club a try, but if you can make it a little further north, Kabab and Curry is the better place. It is worth noting that Curry Club has interesting theme days and specials that may offer more value and culinary enjoyment than what I was able to experience while I was there including weekend breakfast combos, and weeknight dosa, biryani, and rice deals. They also have momos and spring rolls that look delicious (though I can't vouch yet). They stock authentic items like frozen Shahi Kulfi (not included in the buffet), and beverages like Delhi Darling, Thumsup, and Limca. If I go back, it'll be to sample dosas at Dosa Night or see what I think about the momos and spring rolls. I'll update when and if I find out and get to sample more.
