Our reservation for 6 people was at 8:30 pm and we were not seated until 9pm. The service was slow and we weren't able to order until 9:30pm. I'm guessing they were just really busy. The wait time was a little turned off ish. We didn't get our food until 10ish. The restaurant itself is very hip and I can see why they're popular because how nice the restaurant looks. However if you're going there for good quality fish, I think the quality of fish was mediocre and over priced. You could get better quality and well priced fish in NYC. Our waitress kept disappearing so we weren't able to find her to order other items or ask where our missing items were. Uchi is hands down one of the best restaurants in Denver. It has incredible sushi and a surprisingly affordable 6-course Omakase. That being said, Uchi doesn't feel like a stuffy fine dining spot. It's very lively, modern, and cool inside. The tables are close together, and it's pretty loud inside, but don't let that turn you off. Uchi is loved in Texas, and we are lucky to have one here in Denver. What I loved about the Omakase is that it's not just sushi. There were interesting Japanese inspired dishes, hot food, and sushi. From the original in Austin, TX to Houston, TX and now Denver, CO Staples have stayed on the menu and other items have come and gone but regardless of traditional or non traditional Japanese food. Denver's restaurant scene continues to evolve. I still remember those days back in 1998 when I moved up to the Centennial State from the Lone Start State, there were hardly any good restaurants in this Mile High City. But after 24 years, things are different now. Along with all those gentrifications (sad to say) in many neighborhoods, what has been brought are unique restaurants. And I have to say that Uchi is one of them. As a first-generation Japanese, Uchi may not necessarily be a very authentic Japanese restaurant. But it doesn't have to be. Uchi is a hybrid Japanese restaurant with a little American twist to it might be the best description I can give it. It's like fusion power generated by the American culture added to the Japanese authenticity. Whatever the case may be, Uchi might be one of the best things that has happened to the whole restaurant scene in the Denver Metro Area. Sounds exaggerated? Judge me if you would!! My adult daughter and I had our second date night at Uchi tonight (Sunday, July 16th of 2022 to be precise). Our last occasion being her 21st bday in Nov of 2021 where we sat at one of the tables, we were seated at the sushi bar this time. And I tell you, if you dine at Uchi in a small group of two (but no more than three), I HIGHLY recommend that you seat at the bar. The guys at the bar will give you very personable service; those guys who are working hard at the bar are well-trained servers/bartenders with exceptional customer service skills. We had our usual: miso soup, bowl of rice and edamame. I was truly impressed with the edamame because after they were steamed, they were pan-fried with a little squeeze of lemon is what we tasted. Amazing! I need to know who came up with that (pan-frying) idea. My heartfelt compliment goes to the master chef! We also had wagyu tataki, Gyutoro, Bincho Nigiri. And to conclude our dinner, and with a suggestion made by one of our awesome bartenders, we got Banana Cake with some chicory accompaniment. Everything was superb. When we got our bill/check, we were amazed as to how reasonable it was. Turns out, they didn't charge us two out of three drinks we ordered. I thought it was a mistake, so I wanted to tell the bartenders about it (that we were under-charged.) Then my daughter (who is in the restaurant industry) said that they possibly/intentionally excluded those two drinks in the bill (because there was absolutely no way they'd make this kind of mistake.) For this exceptional service, we gladly placed almost 30% tip as a big "Thank You" to the bartenders and the chef. So thank you, Uchi for existing and serving the hungry tigers in the Greater Denver! I know this restaurant is a chain, and I normally choose against chains but Uchi is one I am HAPPY to come back to again and again as you can tell by the second review. She did her thing to suggest even more and it was all so, so good. We didn't technically order omakase but it sure felt like it. Uchi will take your taste buds for a ride, potentially the ride of your life if you've never been to an expensive small plates restaurant before. When I say 'small plates', I mean it. There are no entrees. 99% of restaurants have entrees on the menu, Uchi doesn't. That's the gimmick/theme/experience... whatever you want to call it. I honestly thought I was going to a expensive sushi restaurant, but ended up as a judge on the Food Network who paid their own bill. This place has mastered the concept of... I guess they would call them 'flavor profiles'? Each plate is meticulously crafted to ensure all the ingredients harmoniously blend together to create an explosion of brain tingling goodness. I mean, for the most part. There were some plates that exhibited flavor combinations I didn't really care for, and in some cases had me running for the door, but what's life without a little fun? The waiter will essentially ask you if you'd like a two person 6 plate tour for $160, a 10 plate tour for $260, or if you'd like to go explore the wilderness all by yourself. We chose the latter. We ended up doing something like a 13 plate adventure for around ~$290. Our journey consisted of miso soup, a server-gifted chimnichuri-topped Toro Nigiri, Walu Walu, Bluefin Otoro Nigiri, Ora King Sashimi, Masu Sashimi, Shime Saba Sashimi, Bincho Maki Roll, Zero Sen Roll, Namahotate Nigiri, Spicy Crunchy Tuna Roll, Itoyori Nigiri, Ishidai Nigiri, and Blueberry Shortcake for dessert. Not to mention somewhat of a cocktail bender, trying the Tongue-Cut Sparrow, Skis on the Beach, Uchi G&T, and Fiery Yu. My favorite dish was the Ora King by far, but all the plates had their own pleasure to them. My favorite cocktail was the Skis on the Beach (I could drink a cooler full of those), but the Tongue-Cut Sparrow deserves an honorable mention due to how strong yet how delicious it was. So... will I be back? Maybe, maybe not. You've gotta do this place once, no question. But more than that? That would be rather excessive indulgence that couldn't be justified. Because you are at risk of spending $300 dollars here and leaving hungry (although with whiplash). Sushi lovers are better off sticking with the Sushi Dens of the world for special occasions. You go to Uchi when you want to feel really peculiar and fabulous, surrounded by the same brand of folks in a gentrified neighborhood. And despite the menu that showcased its fresh fish from the markets of Japan, I didn't really feel like I was getting that authentic Japanese dinner plate. I felt more like I was participating in a culinary exploitation theatre where the food eats you for dinner. Was hoping to try Omakase $275 10 courses for 2 after seen the great reviews But sitting at a NOISY Tinny table for 2. Is just not an IDEAL MEAL. How are you going to enjoy the Omakase in a noisy place? So we choose to order some happy hours and some core menu. The waitress was very knowledgeable while explaining the menu on my phone after I scanned the menu., except the Omakase she had no idea what is on the menu for it. Kind of hard since there are 2 menus, one for happy hour and one for the regular menu. So I had to switch back and forth between PDF files. There was too many items and you have to figure out what is single piece or dishes or roll. All the fish we ordered was very fresh. Some plates do have to wait a while. All came like Tapas or Dim sum, very tiny portions. I would stay away from most DEEP FRY items. Like scallion pancakes, it came out extremely oily and over cooked. I ordered it with short rib that was not even there but was charged for it. Maybe it was so tiny I missed it. Zero Zen came with cilantro. The cilantro flavor took over the roll, so you can't enjoy the roll at all. Spider roll, which is my favorite, came deep fried and tasted like old oil. These are the only dishes that really didn't work. Service overall was great. There were many food runners and bus people cleaning the table after they take the empty plate. Our poor waitress broke the glass water bottle at the next table. So she had to clean it with her hand. The manager were no where to be seen helping her or apologizing the couple with little baby. Is a very nice Fusion Japanese food place for a quick bite and drinks since happy hours are till 6:30pm. But it is not a place to get a meal that will fill you up. The food here was absolutely exceptional. The quality of the fish was incredibly fresh and had explosive flavor. They do a fabulous job of pairing the flavors of the fish with the toppings. I had such high expectations for uchi because of all the reviews and talks about it. I was so excited to go during happy hour to try some of their items. I wanted to like it but it was a big disappointment. I got 5 items on the happy hour menu: Albacore tuna: probably the best of the items I got. It was tasty with creamy Atlantic salmon: buttery and melts in your mouth Pork belly: I was really sad about both the presentation and taste of the pork belly and pork belly is not of my favorites. There were only a few pieces in the dish and it looked sloppy. It tasted oily and chewy like something you would get at the grocery store. Foie gras: good amount of Foie gras and a nice sauce Wagyu tartare: best way to end the meal. A bit more salt would have put it all together. Uchi was a nice treat and a great place for a business dinner. Our meal was easily over $500 for three people since we had many drinks and the Omakase for everyone. The sushi was great, but none of it was extremely memorable except the chutoro sashimi and the walu hot dish. The drinks were good, nothing too fancy in terms of garnish or presentation. Service was extremely slow. We often had dirty plates sitting there along with empty cocktail glasses on our table while new items were brought in. I think of Uchi as a nice dinner rather than a casual one, so I was surprised that the water is provided via a carafe at the table and the water glasses were tiny like the sake glasses. It's probably the most Americanized version of an Asian fusion restaurant that's masquerading as a high end Japanese sushi place. There were about 30 patrons and almost a full house when I left around 5:30. The food is tapas style/ a la carte. Worth trying if you want to experience a play off of traditional sushi. The most memorable item was the bone marrow with infused pickled elements. It cut the buttery marrow and served with rice crackers. For the sushi elements I had the wagyu tartare, hamachi handroll, and tuna with truffle in rank order. What's not to like about wagyu? The handroll had charred scallions and bonito. The later wasn't my favorite. Maybe because truffles aren't normally in an Asian wheelhouse and it dominated the fish. As mentioned elsewhere, I was a bit put off by the check in process. I asked to sit at the bar, and after I sat down I was asked several times if I checked in with the "concierge." The third time, I was asked to go back to the hostess and she asked for personal information. Am I applying for FBI clearance? The bartender told me it was because they want to know if people had food allergies. In my opinion, it could be done in a different more welcoming manner. Be prepared to plunk down a wad of cash. I enjoyed my dishes but probably not a weekly spot. As a side note, my neighbor at the bar also ordered the bone marrow and it hardly had any marrow. It is both, on the happy hour and regular menu. They make it so "hard" to get a seat here for happy hour to the point one day I was alone just a single seat I needed and it was close to the time they opened and somehow they couldn't "fit me in" without even trying to, I felt. This was the best meal I had in Denver! I love sushi so I have it often and sometimes it can get too familiar if you get what I mean, but oh man the flavors for Uchi!! We've had Uchiko from Austin, Texas before and found out there was one here! We snagged a reservation and when we got here, we got seated right away! The place was dimly lit like most fancy places. We got tropical passion and strawberry lime punch for our drinks! I really liked the tropical passion, it was lychee, passion fruit, and Thai chilli! It was refreshing with a hint of spice. The strawberry lime punch was pretty good too, not too sweet. Hama Chili 11/10 so good. It's the empty plate with just sauce because I forgot to take a picture before we devoured it all! It was so good, perfect appetizer to start the evening. I love the supremed oranges with the hamachi. The sauce is so good you can drink it Walu Walu 10/10 not pictured because again we devoured it. This was so good, it was escolar in yuzupon. The fish was candied and my god it was a little crunch with the perfect juicy fish. Kanpachi (Amberjack) 9/10 amazing texture to this fish, so fresh and clean and good chew. Hiramasa (Great Amberjack) 10/10 - this was like Kanpachi better older sister or something. It had such a good chew but also fatty! Masu (ocean trout) 8/10 yummy, loved the blaxk sesame seeds on top Sake Toro -10/10 are you kidding me with this, it was so flipping good and fatty. The ginger pieces on top complimented the fattiness of the fish Gyutoro - 9/10 72 hour short rib nigiri, came out hot! Loved the char and smokiness, super tender but wished it was saltier. Sprinkle a couple pieces of flaky salt or truffle salt on top and it would've been even better Unagi - 10/10 this came out hot , charred, crispy ! Ugh so so good. Loved the flavor of this unagi and the texture from the charred bits . Zero Sen - 10/10 this roll was surprisingly super good! It looked basic on the menu but the flavor went well together. It was hamachi, avocado, shallot, cilantro! Loved this. Fried milk - 10/10 I was already super full at this lint but we got dessert anyway! We couldn't pass up since we don't live near here. It was amazing, decadent and delicious. Overall, Uchi Den was amazing and I would 100% recommend to everyone looking for something a bit boujiee. I loved everything we ate, the flavors were on point. Honestly one of the best meals I've had in a while. Now unfortunately my husband has developed a "fish allergy" (frankly I'm convinced it's all in his head) but that means ya girl doesn't get out to sushi as much as she would like. So when a friend said she wanted to try Uchi you didn't have to ask me twice. A few things worth noting. Their happy hour is legit. We came for moms night out on a Saturday and were pleasantly surprised to find Happy Hour still going on. We only tried the Waygu Tartare and Salmon Nigiri from the HH menu, and beverages of course but I definitely need to come back to take full advantage. We opted for the Somokase which is Omakase but more personalized by your server based on preferences. She really knocked it out of the park with her choices for us. As my friend it turns out is more of a sushi roll kind of gal the server did a great job bringing dishes that were more aligned with her palate. This was actually nice for me because I got to try delicious dishes that I probably wouldn't have otherwise ordered because I would just want all the fresh fish. The hot rock waygu and the short rib were two really succulent and phenomenal red meat dishes. My favorite was hands down the scallop and Hama Chili. The seafood was so fresh and flavorful. I could have easily eaten about 10 of the scallops maybe more, and luckily for me I got most of the Hama Chili due to my friend not liking "orange" no complaints here. I also have to note that the tempura Japanese pumpkin was really amazing and something I again never in a million years would have ordered. I'm telling you our server sent out nothing but bangers. Absolutely fantastic. We had an early reservation for 4:45pm on a Wednesday and were greeted by a half-filled restaurant and fairly casual attire. The waitstaff were happy and helpful the second we walked through the door. The happy hour menu had some AMAZING deals, with nigiri priced in single digits for two slices of dish. The menu was complex and gigantic, the waitress navigating us through and suggesting great bites. The summer spritz was light and delicious, the whiskey, smoky mescal, and lychee gin were great as well. Every bite we had was delicious, though the hiramasa amberjack was the show stopper. The dessert of fried milk and happy hour trifle were ridiculously tasty. My palate hails from a big city, and since moving to Denver it's been tough to find good upscale cuisine. Uchi has been #1 on my list of places to try for months! I check the menu on a regular basis, drool scrolling through their Instagram, and get hyped reading through reviews. I finally made it on a Friday evening for Happy Hour. We had a reservation for 5:00 and were glad we had one -- it was a packed house. We started with two cocktails, the ume punch and the fall spritz. The ume punch was amazing! The fall spritz was not bad, but tasted a bit like straight apple juice. For food, we went with a few items from the happy hour menu: - Nigiri: bincho and sake - Walu Walu - Sakana - Waygu Meatballs - Crispy Rice The bincho nigiri was one of the best things I have ever eaten... if you like albacore tuna, this is a must-order! Neither nigiri was even slightly fishy. Everything else was definitely good, but not as great as I was mentally prepared for given all of the hype and the steep price tag. The walu walu was probably my second favorite. The sakana, though tasty, didn't taste like anything more than high-end frozen fish sticks. I will reiterate, nothing was bad! I just planned on being absolutely wowed and was not. Happy hour portions are 2-3 bites each. We enjoyed all of the tastings we tried, and then happily left hungry to get some pizza slices next door to fill up. Our server was very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. The interior is beautifully decorated. It is incredibly loud inside. For all this restaurant is hyped up to be, I felt really underwhelmed by the food and experience. The drinks and a few of the dishes were good, but the majority of what we tried was uninspiring. Nothing tasted bad but most things fell flat of our expectations. Our friends were running late to dinner so I ordered a drink to enjoy outside first. I had the Fiery Yu with tequila which was very refreshing and fragrant. My bf ordered the Fukumao Ume and it was a bit weird, somehow tasted like bubblegum. For dinner, 2 of our friends ordered the chef's 10 course tasting (this omakase is designed for 2 people), while I ordered a la carte. I ordered the Hama Chili, oyster, kara age, shishitos, and various nigiri until I was full. I was shocked that I liked the shishitos most of all these dishes, everything else was just ok and the nigiri was bland. I didn't like their sushi rice, I found it too sweet and it overpowered the fish. It's also the tiniest pieces, I was pretty disappointed with the sushi. The omakase has a few cold and hot dishes along with nigiri and dessert. I didn't try any but the kama collar looked the best of all the dishes included. My friends were still hungry after their omakase so they added the mushroom rice dish after which was honestly the best dish of the night. The mushrooms are incredibly juicy and the rice gets crispy. Overall, I would say Uchi is overrated and way overpriced for a dinner, but I would try again for happy hour since my cocktail was so good. Our host and server were incredibly accommodating, even put a wrong order on the house and brought out a small bite for free when one of the dishes was taking a while. They do also have high chairs and our friend's toddler was able to sit in the corner and enjoy dinner with us. However I was let down dish after dish, I paid much less for a far better meal at Sushi Den. read more

My initial reaction to the light pollution of open urban farming was disarming. I worry about gentrification enough, especially given the history of Five Points and its adjacent neighborhoods. But that gave way to an immediate sense of bad ambiance and snootiness by the host staff followed by a confusing server's explanation of how to order "somakase" along with a recommendation that should we order a la carte, we should order all at once so it doesn't take super long. Ok. So we did and... The table next to us who was sat well after us received their food in a continuous and timely fashion. In over an hour we were served three of the 7 or so dishes we ordered (and had intended to maybe order more.) On top of that, tables on both sides of us were being served complementary dishes or additional pieces of nigiri per their food runners and none of the same for us. I even mentioned in the reservation that it was both my spouse and my birthday! And it was ruined by the Uchi experience, sadly. In hindsight though, it was fine by me that we weren't treated with the same service in terms of the food. The fish portions were a little too delicate, to be polite, and quite honestly even the over priced fatty tuna was just mediocre -and we are avid travelers as sushi connoisseurs. The only good dish wasn't sushi, but it was bit on the salty side: the grilled maitake. Of course our neighbor's portion of that same dish was double in size to ours which at that point just started to be laughable! The saba was downright disgusting and overpowered by a sauce that masked its stench. Yes, mackerel can be fishy, but this... well, let's say I spent the last 24 hours ill. My spouse did not so who knows. I do know that we left before our last three dishes at which point, after politely asking for the check due to the service circumstances and not to wait further, they brought us three rather questionable looking complementary dishes which were rejected because: duh. And they tried it with a gift card for next time, but we left it on the table along with the proper tip as always for our server, despite her suggesting it was our fault that the food wasn't as fast as we would like. I'm not even kidding that she said this after we followed her direction to order all at once AND we had to emphasize at that point AGAIN that tables around us were being served with haste and extras. She scowled at that point, while trying to feign a hipster smile... and we made our escape. Do NOT recommend. Just skip this place and head to Sushi Den for consistent service without such pretentiousness and most importantly: fresh sushi. read more

Favorite sushi spot in Denver. There's a lot of restaurants around this area but this is the best one by a long shot. High quality, fresh, well prepared, knowledgeable, delicious and the servers are so kind. I went here for a date night and was surprised by the quality of the entire establishment. Holy cow, this place absoltuely blew me away! The perfect place for a splurge dinner for a special occasion. They have happy hour from 4-6:30 daily with discounted drinks. My happy hour drink (Ume Punch) was pretty good. Next we had the waygu tartare, fish toast, and a couple pieces f nigiri. Everything was perfectly balanced. I'm saving the best for last- the bone marrow was absolutely spectacular. If you've never tried bone marrow before, imagine a sort of meaty butter. 10/10 recommend this place. read more

Uchi Denver is a transplant from Austin, TX, an award winning sushi restaurant. We actually had attempted to visit their Austin location during happy hour and missed out by the single party ahead of me in line (bastards). Uchi is not cheap, so the hack remains true here as well... visit during happy hour! We did just that on a Monday afternoon. We made a 4pm reservation (when they open) just in case, but it was still quite possible to walk-in as well. The restaurant is not only spacious, but has quite a pleasing aesthetic which borders on upscale, but still retains this understated quality. One need not prescribe by a classy dress code to dine here; the environment calls for either. As it was HH, the menu for such an occasion was still vast, but the disclaimer is that the items are smaller in format. Not a problem. We ordered a slew of items. The most recommended include the following: Sake Nigiri ($6 for 2), Fish Toast ($6), Hama Chili ($7), and the Walu Walu ($8), and Beef Tartare ($8). The Fish Toast and Walu Walu were the favorites. The Fish Toast was battered in tempura and light. The accompanying sauce was the perfect combo. The Walu Walu was steamed thoughtfully and presented within a sweet, citrusy ponzu sauce. The Foie Gras -- while already controversial -- was a tad weird and the Pork Belly was mostly fried and greasy batter. Came here for my husband's and my anniversary dinner last month, and we were swept away. We came during the last hour or so of Happy Hour in order to choose items from both the HH and regular menus, and I have to say that I think it's the best way to go! Initially, the menu was overwhelming (with no shortage of interesting, unique options), but our waitress was incredibly patient and helpful with explaining the items in detail and providing recommendations. We liked EVERYTHING that we ate and drank. I also appreciated the artistic detail that went into making every piece appealing to our tastebuds as well as our eyes. When I look for remarkable restaurants, I look for a place that can not only deliver amazing food but also an atmosphere and experience not easily forgotten. Uchi made it happen! Now, the only reason that I'm leaving off 1 star is because of the hefty price tag that will prevent us from frequenting Uchi more than once or twice a year.
