Temaki Den "happy hour" is a bait-and-switch. Avoid this place! Don't even bother unless you have a reservation. Complete joke. Arrived at 4:45 (HH is 4:30-6:00) with a full party and was told 30-45 minute wait, maybe an hour. We stayed, paid for parking, and waited over an hour. At 5:40, still no table. I asked if they would honor happy hour pricing if we were seated after 6 due to THEIR wait. The host said "absolutely not" and "no exceptions." So they knowingly let people wait through the entire happy hour window with zero chance of actually getting it. We left at 6:00 after wasting an hour+ and paying for parking. At 6:04, we get a text that the table is ready. Completely unacceptable. If you can't seat guests within the happy hour window, don't advertise one. As it stands, this is misleading at best and a waste of time and money. Avoid for happy hour unless you already have a table -- otherwise don't bother. We even got a little soup to start, and since it was my birthday weekend, I got the yuzu black pepper sorbet as a treat. All three hand rolls were delicious and tasted very fresh. This was some of the best casual sushi I've ever had - casual as in not an omakase or super high end. Beware they are hand rolls and nigiri so there aren't the rolls you might be expecting at a normal sushi place here in the US. The 2 things you absolutely need to get are the scallop hand roll and the salmon oshizushi. I could probably eat 20 of each they're that good. The cocktail list was also excellent and the service was prompt and very friendly. One thing I like is they bring things out in "courses" so that everything can be eaten as fresh as possible. Temaki Den is located in the middle of The Source in RiNo. Very well set up in the center with other businesses surrounding it. Temaki Den is known for their temaki (hand rolls) so make sure to order a couple/few of those. We went during their lunch hours on a Saturday. The lunch menu had so many options to choose from. (Lunch menu is only offered on Fridays- Sundays 11:30-2:30.) Start with the spicy garlic edamame-the flavor is perfection. For temaki, you cannot go wrong with the blue crab or the spicy tuna. I also ordered unagi which was perfectly cooked. Drinks were phenomenal as well. The seasonal special drink of the day was excellent as was the Bloody Mariko! I'll start off saying that the food was great! We went for happy hour and tried a variety of options which were amazing. However, what I'm not happy with was the staff. I did not have a reservation and had never been to this restaurant. I asked the wait staff if there were any open seats at the bar. She said No. There was no follow-up asking if I wanted to be added to the wait or an explanation that their bar seats were reserved for customers. I had another negative experience with her later on when I asked her for my wait and she rudely said that I had a 30 minute wait, yet as I was about to leave, I got a text less than 2 minutes later saying that my table was ready. I do want to highlight that the rest of the waiters and staff were great. I was seated at the bar and the bartenders were very attentive. Had a fantastic birthday dinner at Temaki Den. Made a reservation, and our seating at the sushi bar was ready on time. Both the hostess and server made note of my allergies. Temaki is located in the center of one of the markets at the Source Hotel so that it can be busy, but I was still able to have a conversation with my friend. Our server was terrific and helpful since this was our first time. She helped us make selections that were appropriate based on our preferences and would be enough to keep us satisfied. The sushi chefs started us out with a small bite of tofu topped with a cucumber roe and sesame crisps. Very fresh and bright. The spicy garlic edamame was precisely what it claimed to be. It was spicier at the top layer, but the yummy garlic was waiting underneath. The hamachi sashimi was delicious with just a hint of spice from the thinly sliced serrano peppers. For nigiri, I had the house favorite, salmon oshizushi, and black snapper. Both were good. I preferred the black snapper since it was a leaner cut and not as rich with the ponzu sauce and lime zest. The temaki hand rolls were fantastic. The spicy scallop wasn't too spicy, and the spicy tuna was hands down my favorite. Unlike most spicy tuna rolls, Temaki doesn't drown its tuna in mayonnaise or paste to make it spicy. The tuna was mixed with fresh herbs and chili, giving it a fresh, clean bite. My friend made reservations, and we were seated in the beautiful open space amidst everyone else experiencing joy eating delicious food and fresh fish. Personal faves: eggplant and spicy tuna temaki, unagi and salmon belly nigiri, salmon sashimi, and both the desserts. Although honestly everything was memorable and delicious. The nori is so crispy and complements all the other flavors so well. For each temaki, the sauces they add go together so well with the main component of the roll. For the desserts: I love the spicy kick added by the black pepper, which goes surprisingly well with the yuzu and the fresh strawberries on top of the crème brûlée is *close your eyes to savor the taste* level of good pairings. The waiter was really attentive, and wouldn't bring out the temaki unless it was guaranteed we could eat it immediately -- for example, if someone stepped away for a phone call he would wait until they came back to serve for them. He provided good recommendations and was attentive throughout. He honestly was the cherry on top of a 10/10 experience. The restaurant is located inside an old warehouse and has some overhead, smaller lighting that keeps the inside dim but well lit enough to see and appreciate what you're eating. Finally tried this place and it was worth it! We had the spinach and kabocha tempura from the kitchen. Both were great. We had the spicy negihama and aged tuna hand rolls. The aged tuna one was so buttery. The spicy negihama was normal. For nigiri we had the aburi aged tuna, aburi eel, and aburi black snapper. The aburi snapper was like butter and soft. The aburi aged tuna was my favorite bite all night and was so fatty and delicious. We also had saba oshizushi, salmon belly with creme freche, and tuna with blue cheese. The salmon belly was my favorite thing out of the three in the special nigiri section. The saba was yummy and I like this flavor of fish and no bones!! The tuna with blue cheese was really interesting. Personally think that they could have used less blue cheese and I'm not convinced that cheese and sushi go together. Maybe if they smoked the tuna like smoked salmon? We also had the Inari off the basic nigiri section. They filled the tofu skin well and I liked how big the skin was. Off the daily specials we had the Australian wagyu and the madai. I loved the way they prepared the madai with the yuzu. The wagyu was great but I had a small fatty part that I couldn't chew. For dessert we had the crème brûlée. One of the best crème brûlée I've had. So silky and not too sweet inside and the shell was perfect. We wanted to try the sorbet but they were sold out. For drinks we had hot tea, the best of sake flight, the a5 washed cocktail, the sex panther cocktail, the Yamazaki 12 whiskey, and the nikka Miyagikyo whiskey. The tea was great and huge, the best of sake flight went great with the fish. Especially the third sake on the list complimented the food best in my opinion. And out of the three whiskeys the nikka miyagikyo which I hadn't tried before was a nice whiskey. The yamazaki whiskeys are my favorite but I was pleasantly surprised by the nikka. The sex panther cocktail complimented dessert really well and since it's a sweeter drink in comparison to whiskey or sake so I don't think it would really go with the food. But with dessert and for sipping at the end of the night it was perfect! The service was slow in the beginning and I found myself wondering when the server was coming back but once when we got to ordering everything he was more consistent. We sat at the bar seats and they were comfortable for the two hours. Since we sat at the bar we got a salmon dish in the beginning that was really yummy. Temaki Den is my favorite restaurant in my neighborhood, and considering it's only a 5 minute walk it's a shame I don't go more often. I always start off with the Sex Panther cocktail, it's vibrantly green and refreshing. The HH handroll set is a great value, it's usually not enough to make me full so I'll add a few pieces of nigiri or some cooked items. The chawanmushi requires a bit of waiting time to cook but it's absolutely delicious and silky smooth, I highly recommend it! Reservations are pretty easy to come by but I've never had any problem walking in on a weekday and getting a seat around the bar which I actually prefer over a table anyway.
