    Blueberry cobbler latte
    Sarah C.

I'm surprised that there is only 1 review for this place right now, so I'm excited to tell you about my experience here! I was looking for a place to sit down on a rainy Monday and have a coffee while I crocheted for a while. There are a few coffee houses in this area and I have tried all of them. This place is new I think, and honestly it was very good. I love a good coffee, or a good latte. I was greeted very kindly when I arrived by the sweet, very knowledgeable lady working behind the counter. Knowledgable, because I heard her explaining the difference between different coffee drinks to another customer, and it's nice to hear a good, clear, correct explanation of the difference between drinks. When I walked in she asked if I had been there before, and I had not, so she told me about some specials they had, and I decided I was definitely going to try the blueberry latte. I wish they had soy milk as an option, I really really wish they did, but I had to go with whole milk instead. They do have almond, oat and coconut milk options as well if I'm not mistaken. I also ordered an Asiago bagel, toasted. I asked for the options for toppings and I'm going to do my best to remember, but I believe they had cream cheese, cinnamon cream cheeee, vegan cream cheese, butter, vegan butter and sun butter. Impressive selection little coffee house, impressive. I also ordered a little slice of a lemon loaf that just looked so moist and delicious. They also had cinnamon rolls (which I heard her tell another customer they can heat up and add the cinnamon roll frosting, so definitely next time I'll do that) and really good looking muffins and some other tasty looking pastries. I grabbed some sweetener in case I needed it. Sometimes with acidic or overly roasted coffee or espresso I need something sweet in it. However, man was this latte good, nothing else needed to be added. It was perfect. I really enjoyed drinking it. The bagel was good, and the lemon loaf was amazing. I love that the owners are into some vegan options and "cleaner" options. I talked to the barista about energy drinks they are featuring next month that are made with green coffee beans, instead of chemicals. She also told me that the latte I had was made with beans the owners roasted the night before. I mean seriously you could tell, it was so fresh. Well done! The barista was super nice, it was calm, a good amount of foot traffic, even people coming in right till closing time. My ride didn't show up on time and she offered to let me wait even though they had closed, and after just getting out of the hospital and having a spine injury, she has no idea how nice of a gesture that really was. I ended up ordering the same order that I got for my boyfriend as I left. He also loved it. I will definitely be returning to this coffee house, soon. I hope they are successful, their coffee was great!

I was already impressed, and then we had a jalapeño cheddar bagel with cream cheese.

Alamode Specialty Foods - Cross section of their excellent eggplant parmigiana

    Alamode Specialty Foods

"I'm all yours Put me to the test…read moreLove is my specialty" (Roberta Flack) It's hard to say what Alamode Specialty Foods clearly specializes in, because they have quite a lot of special treats everywhere you look on their shelves and inside their display cases. Want some examples? Of course you do, or you wouldn't be reading this. Cookies, muffins, pastries, beverages, bottled sauces and condiments, candies, nuts cakes, grab and go entrees, soups, meat pies, a deli counter, sandwiches, snacks, plenty of deviled egg varieties, breads and bagels, and to top things off, how about 30 or so ice creams? We had a blast checking out this cool little country store in Connecticut's quiet corner. We bought a hunk of Eggplant Parmesan from their deli ($10.95), a pint of spicy chicken corn chowdah ($6.95), two singles scoops of ice cream (PbB Banana and Mayan Chocolate) at $5 each, and a big Cinnamon Swirl Croissant ($4.95). The total was $32.85 before tax. We split the Eggplant for dinner, and I can attest that it was excellent. It was a big portion, piled high of very tender eggplant slices in a marinara sauce. Eggplant can be a tricky food and it can turn up tough and rubbery from time to time. But not here. I had the Chowdah for lunch today. It was loaded with corn, carrots, potatoes, and quite a lot of shredded chicken in a creamy broth. I was disappointed by the lack of spiciness in a dish advertised as spicy. But I'd get that missing spice very soon. The ice creams were very good but were on the expensive side for $5 a single scoop. When I ordered the Mayan Chocolate, the super friendly young lady behind the counter wanted to be sure I knew it would be spicy. Well, she was right about the spice; it had an undertone of chili peppers that mixed very well with the cold chocolate ice cream. But spicy rarely bothers me, so I thought It was awesome. The only bummer we had in our grocery bag was that big Cinnamon Swirl Croissant. It wasn't exactly fresh and was quite brittle and crumbly in places. But it was big, and the center of the pastry seemed a lot "fresher" and softer. That portion was quite good. We had a very enjoyable visit overall, and I can definitely see repeat visits to Alamode in our future.
