We were in town for a wedding. One evening, after dinner, we explored Old Towne Camarillo before visiting Twisted Tree Tavern for dessert. We ordered an iced tea ($4.00), TO Honey I'm Blonde ($7.75), Stone Buenaveza ($8.25), Limoncello Mascarpone Cake ($7.50), and the "special cheesecake" ($9.50). With $2.68 in tax, the total was $39.68 before tip. Despite the word "tavern" in the name, this place is family friendly. During our visit, there were two large group gatherings (with kids) happening at the same time. The interior is spacious but can get noisy due to the hard surfaces. However, when the weather cooperates, there are outdoor patios available in both the front and back. Although the color palette of the interior décor is dark, the space feels clean and comfortable. There's a variety of seating options--booths, tables, high-tops, and communal tables. I'm sure the pastries on the menu came from a third-party vendor, but they were really good. Never coming back. Ever. Yes, there are places that fall into the "eh, I wouldn't come back" and not because it was a bad experience, but usually because it was okay but other places are better, so there is not reason. This is not one of them. Granted, we were there with a large party, but the wait staff was awful. And awful is a step down from terrible, people. She took the time to do separate checks, but complained, incessantly about how much of a pain it was. Then dumped a stack of bills on them middle of the table with a dismissive "you guys figure it out" attitude. When someone had a question it became a harsh "you're gonna have to talk to my boss" statement followed by turning heel and walking away. The manager did come out, took one look at the bill and quickly explained that, yes, it was right, and politely explained why. The customer was happy. But why did it have to work out like that. The service was so poor that I felt terrible leaving a 10% tip. Until I got home and checked my bill. The server had (correctly) put an 18% tip on there because of the size of the party. My mistake. 100% on me. But for that crappy service I ended up paying a 28% tip. Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice? Never gonna happen, because I will never go there. Nor, probably will the 20 or so other people at the table with similar experiences. As a former marketing person, this is crushing. You spend all of your time to bring people into your establishment and the actions of one person counteract all of the hard work and effort. Came on a Sunday , and to a surprise they have happy hour everyday. We had a big group , 16. We had our own private table, conveniently! Everyone was happy with their drinks or beers. I got a dirty martini , not bad for happy hour. $10. I'll stick with draft pours next time. All enjoyed their meals. Service was great. The waitress was OK with multiple separate checks. Twisted Oak is in Old Town Camarillo in a historic building that used to house a long established, local department store that dominated the commercial scene just like Webb's Department Store in downtown Glendale which for decades kept out major department stores until finally J.W. Robinson managed to slip in. Inside is cavernous with padded booths, long, communal Stamtisch, standard tables & chairs, long bar seating which is dominated by wide screen TV's spouting out sports programming. It's a stereotypical Gastropub with standard New American grub of the first quarter of the 21st century. Jona was our friendly, laid back waiter who would check on us for any other thing needed and could give us separate checks, no problem. 1) Roasted Brussels Sprouts: Blackened Sprouts were tough, fibrous, hard. My sharp knife could barely cut through unless I bore down hard. The high oven heat blackened the outer leaves, but left the inside almost uncooked. Strangely acidic with a bit of funky earthiness. Sweet diced sweet dates, bacony Pancetta, topped with slivered almonds. Bit of chile piquancy. Perhaps sautéing the Brussels Sprouts would cook the sprouts more evenly and thoroughly to soften the toughness and still leave it al dente. A more mild Japanese vinegar would give a cleaner, purer finish. 2) Twisted Oak Burger: Shiny, golden brown Brioche buns. Crisscrossed bacon strips that weren't overcooked to a brittle hardness. Requested Medium rare beef; patty was a dusky rose. Onions sautéed with beer; arrugula was missing in action. Blue cheese was timidly faint. Garlic Aïoli (ah ee oh lee) saved this burger from blandness. I added on Avocado for more healthful oils. Ordered the French fries crispy. They were, but not exceptionally impressive. 1-2a) Oso Rojo: Amber beer, toasty, acidic, softly sweet, refreshingly bitter, burnt grain, bit soapy. 3) Donut Bread Pudding: Rum Donuts, Bourbon caramel sauce, dusting of crushed walnuts, vanilla ice cream à la mode, couldn't find the chocolate chips. Comforting, starchy, sweet dessert. Except for the salads, the food here seems to cater to those who do not like veggies. The food leans toward high carb, sugar, fats, meat. Worst customer service I have had in a long time. My family and I arrived for a birthday celebration which was a place I love to eat because the food is great. We only had 5 people in our party which we had reservations for 5:45 pm but were a little early and were sat promptly. When our server arrived, she didn't great us with a smile nor with her name. It took about 5 min for Kathy to arrive and take our drink order. The people behind us arrived after us and got there drinks before us. It took about 15 min just to get our drinks, Defiantly not busy. We asked for a cold glass for one of the wines and the glass was warm by the time we got it. She apologized and her excuse was she had a large party in the back. If that was the case why would the host sit her tables since she couldn't handle it, and to have the tables across the restaurant is ridiculous. If she needed to take tables they should have been sat closer to the party in the back so she could provide equal service or have only had the 1 party in the back. After that it took another 20 min for her to come and take our food order. It was like we were an inconvenience for her, we were not worth her time and just dragged her feet. After we got the food order in it took another 40 min to get it. Again we place the order before the people behind us and yet we still got our food after them. The server who was next to us checked in on the food after we had asked about it and then the food was on its way. Food was warm not hot and when it was brought out to us, My wife, daughter, and I's food came out together and my parents came out 3 min later. Why didn't the food runner have help from Kathy the server. Every time she would come to the front or go to another table never did she check in, she checked in on us maybe twice. After, we ate we again sat there waiting for her to come check in but watched her go back and forth 3 or 4 times never stopping bye, and when she would go to another table she never stopped to check in. I again had to asked the other server, that we wanted to order a dessert. He said he would get our server for us. Took her 5 min to get to us again. Placed an order for the dessert with Kathy and asked for the check. Took almost 10 min for dessert to come out and in between that time had to ask for the check again and changed the dessert to Take Out. By that time the desert came out and luckily we already had an empty box to put it in or else we might have never gotten one. What a nice find that I don't think I would've found without Yelp, but we were trying to find a dog friendly place with a good happy hour, and luckily we stumbled onto Twisted Oak! With a wide variety of deals but the French dip sandwich really sold it for me and a nice selection of beers, crispy fries, comforting beef and a not too salty au jus made this place come to life (along with the live music). 3.4 stars- I want to be fair - CSUCI Grad weekend :/ Very slow service. It took such a long time to just get to order our food then to get the food .. all together over two hours. I understand, I get it sometimes people call out but this was bad. Very bad. It's a big restaurant and it was not packed from what I could see. They had live music ! A plus! I just felt like they kept saying sorry but didn't truly care because they'd say ... "We have a few graduations." Then forget about us. We should've left as we weren't really tended to. We were so patient. After all the waiting they wanted to charge $1 per person to cut the cake brought for our grad. Our own plates and utensils were brought. We didn't need staff to cut it as a Bundt and pretty easy to do by us. It's a cool place, very spacious with tons of seating but definitely understaffed. It is locally owned , so I do not want to be too rough with my review. Food was ok. I just had nachos and two beers. The beers were super cold which is a plus. My friends liked their meals. Service is efficient and friendly and beer selection includes my favorite, Liquid Candy. We enjoyed a late lunch during Happy Hour and ordered the Margarita Flat bread, made the way we like it, with fresh tomato and basil with a basil evoo drizzle. We also tried the Saigon Sliders which were fresh and delicious with the perfect flavor profile that lives up to its name. We've ordered the Forager burger and Chicken Bruschetta Sandwich in the past and they are consistently good quality dishes. Really fun spot ! Yummy bar food and great beer on tap house made and imported and a must try. Our service was on point with our amazing fun waitresses. She was super energetic and sweet and we sat in the corner booth right behind the desk. Started off with the yummy pretzel with mustard and cheese sauce and ordered the Mahi Mahi sandwich with there yummy sweet potato fries and hubs ordered the california cuban sandwich another good one with pulled pork and ham with a side Caesar salad. Everything came out hot and quick and our waitresse was a sweetheart . A must try bar for some good fun and drinks for special occasions. First time here, and I must say I had a pretty good experience. I met up with friends for food and drinks. The dining area is large and spacious, with ample seating at the long bar. This particular night they had live music by way of a guitarist singing a wide variety of songs, classic to modern with a country to old rock take of each song. It wasn't too loud, the music was tasteful, and the ambiance was relaxing. The service was fast and friendly, with our waitress seemingly being one of our party whenever she arrived. She did a great job reading the table and the need. She was never interrupting but rather added to the conversation. The loaded nachos were filling, coating my stomach like your typical bar food. They were neither soggy nor greasy, but rather crunch and tasty. This place lost points on the weirdly flavored creme brûlée that had strawberry Nesquick powder on top. The powder was unnecessary and left an oddly synthetic strawberry flavor. Most importantly for a bar is their decent beer selection. I got a flight of beers to sample 4 of their wide selection. Terrible service went in sat in a high top in the bar. There's only about 20 people in the whole place. The host tells us that the bartender is gonna come over and serve us, but then the host comes back and says oh the bartender is too busy, too busy with about 10 people I guess that's more than she can handle so then I ordered a Michelada from the host and we sat there and waited about 15 minutes for someone to come back and take our order or for my Michelada to get delivered so that never happened so we walked out absolutely terrible service. I absolutely LOVE this place! I've been here many times! My family went this evening, a Monday night. We sat on the back patio. My truly favorite place to sit! The decor is wonderful, twinkle lights, market lights strung all over. Little plants and funky, cute items hung on the wall. Ok, enough about the patio. The food was delicious! I had the tuna melt. Best tuna salad in so long! My husband had the Hawaiian pizza and not a bite was left! My daughter had the special, Diablo Chicken salad. Very spicy and huge! Well - the funniest part is my wife and I don't go out to dinner frequently; but when we do, my wife is all about the deals. For Twisted Oak, we have been a few times recently and want to provide some feedback - which is all positive. The Happy Hour is the way to go when possible as they have a very generous meal. The carnitas and fish tacos are surprisingly good and big and delicious. You get 2 pretty big tacos that will definitely fill you up relatively quickly. They also have a flatbread - with two or three options - that are really good. The Happy Hour drink prices are very good as I believe it's like $2-$3 off of draft beers and $3-$4 off for mixed/well drinks. My wife likes the skinny spicy margaritas and I am a fan of their beer selection. The staff is always very kind and accommodating and will work with you on finding what you want to eat or drink. My favorite menu item hands down is the peanut butter and bacon jelly burger. This burger is probably one of my favorite burgers all around. Unfortunately, it is not on the Happy Hour Menu, but it is worth paying whatever they want to charge you. Twisted Oak has a very spacious inside and a fun, eclectic patio that they share with the wine bar place, a few doors down. Visited on a Friday afternoon and we started off with a beer each from their vast menu. We were waited on promptly and with a smile. The ambiance here allowed us to have an in depth conversation amongst ourselves but we were also included in the family feeling with everyone else who was enjoying a late afternoon snack and merriment. The PB&J burger hit the spot! Natalie is the best! She went out of her way to make sure our afternoon was perfect. She sent us soaring in to the weekend with kindness, personality and genuine care. All aspects of the service was very slow. When my burger arrived, it was not prepared as ordered. It took a long time to receive the replacement. It was wrong also. The second replacement also took a long time. Everyone at the table was full completed eating before I received my meal.
