Great food, fast friendly service, old school down home feel. Tracy, and Holly are the best.

81 Diner - Cheesesteak and fresh cut fries

Now, years later, my wife and I would pass by the new 81 diner and would always say we needed to try it. We'll, today was the day. We stopped in for lunch, and aside from a gentleman waiting for his to-go order, we were known as the customers. I guess not a lot of people eat at 3 in the afternoon. The atmosphere was very nice. The tables, chairs and booths all fit the diner nicely. My cheesesteak sub was very tasty. Their menu said no substitutions, but they let me withhold the lettuce, tomatoes and onions, which I'm not fond of, so I'm glad they let me do that. Along that note, my wife ordered the BLT sandwich, and gave me some of the bacon, which was really good! Our friend George ordered the pizza burger, which also looked good, and he seemed to enjoy it. Their fresh cut fries were fantastic as well. If I had anything to complain about, it would be that the music being piped in was too modern for a classic diner atmosphere and wasn't something we were expecting. Hopefully that's something they will eventually change. Maybe next time we will stay long enough to try some of their desserts, which looked pretty good too. We will definitely be back soon.

I felt justified to leave 4-Stars but I'm leaving 5-Stars and the reason is that some slight changes could eventually be made. New Owners are working hard to establish and build up business. First, the inside is very nicely decorated and extremely clean Parking is perfect with plenty of spaces The dining staff were working fast and efficient, younger folks with very friendly and positive attitudes. Overall the Staff was Outstanding ! We only seen the Breakfast Menu, it was well planned and very easy to look over and make your selections. I was a little taken back at the cost of the Steak & Eggs, the Country Fried Steak and Ham Steak, both with Eggs as well, compared to other diners, it seems a little costly. The food arrived freshly cooked and hot, which is nice and we ordered the sliced fried potatoes, these need to be improved, no flavor, adding just a pinch of seasoning would take this many steps up. I had the Pancakes, Eggs and Sausage which were standard breakfast food. Deb had the French Toast, Eggs and Bacon, same standard breakfast food. This indeed is a nice little diner, I would bet they will continue improving as each day goes by. We will give them a try for lunch one day

We thought they were, too, as it looked like there weren't many lights on inside, from outside the restaurant, and there was one little lone car sitting in the parking lot aside from ours. We called to verify that they were in fact open, so we went inside, and were greeted by a sign saying to grab our own menus and silverware (odd) and to pick our own seats (and with several tables still having dirty dishes on them, that limited our choices a very tiny bit). We were very quickly warmly greeted by the lone person we saw inside, who was probably a manager having to do 84 different jobs at once due to short staffing. She never rushed us, got our drinks to us fast, took our orders and got our food out to us pretty quickly. Our Pepsi drinks tasted slightly off, but that didn't stop us from drinking them. I really enjoyed my Belgian waffle very much, though my side of scrapple was a little lackluster and extra crispy on the outermost part. My wife liked her sandwich (though I already can't remember what she ordered, it was probably a club sandwich). She thoroughly enjoyed her side of coleslaw, however. Long story short, I'm only knocking a star off due to the drink and scrapple that I didn't enjoy. Perhaps if we came here on a busier day, things might have been a little improved. I'd definitely be willing to return again sometime.

I was there last Saturday afternoon after the lunch crowd was gone heading back from Rochester. I topped off the gas tank and was hungry. So I park and head inside. It's not a big place. Several tables on one side and the bar on the other. I grab a seat on the end at the bar. The waitress comes over and I order a cup of coffee and look at the menu she provided. I'm pretty hungry not eating anything that day so far. I decide on the breakfast special ( 2 eggs any style and home fries). I add toast and bacon. Eggs over medium. The coffee is pretty good. I'm looking at traffic patterns in my phone, checking out the weather. Food arrives pretty quick and the plate is covered. Toast is fresh, home fries and good, bacon crispy and eggs cooked to order. The coffee gets refilled and I'm enjoying every bite. I like the old school diner vibe with the fresh coffee and diner style foods. I am finished and quite full with an excellent meal. I get the check and it's pretty cheap. She gets a good tip, I'm done with the coffee and out the door. I have been going past for maybe 20 years and stopped now twice. I think it will be a regular stop on my way to Rochester back and forth granted they're open. I think they're closing for a few weeks in August, just be aware. If you like the diner vibe and a good meal that won't break the bank, it's worth a visit. Yeah...where is Dillsburg? Rt 15 N/S in Pennsylvania. Google maps is a help.

We both went with the dinner specials, which were only 14.99 each and came with two sides. I ordered the ribs and my husband got the NY strip with butterfly shrimp. For the price, the portions were honestly huge. My ribs were fall off the bone tender and coated in a tangy BBQ sauce that had just the right balance of sweet and smoky. Easily one of the better diner style rib plates I have had. The fries were natural cut, perfectly seasoned, and had that ideal texture where they are pillowy inside with a light crisp on the outside. The succotash was simple but still good and comforting. My husband's steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare and had great flavor throughout. The butterfly shrimp were crispy and paired really well with the steak. His side salad was super fresh with iceberg lettuce, cucumber, tomato, onion, and shredded cheddar. I did not even get a photo of it because he immediately dug in and loved it. The service really stood out too. Everyone was so attentive and quick to help with anything we needed like extra napkins or more sauce. It felt very welcoming and genuinely cared for. The interior has that true hometown diner feel where it seems like everyone knows each other. It is mostly booths with some tables and even a classic counter with stools, which gives it that nostalgic diner vibe. With both meals and drinks, our total was under $40, which feels rare lately for portions and quality like this. This is one of those spots where you leave full, happy, and feeling like you got an actual deal. Definitely worth stopping in if you are in the area.
