The guy who runs the karaoke is seriously legit! We came here on a Tuesday night for Karaoke and it was amazing! The DJ is isolated from everyone with a sign that says not to talk to him. You write your song down and slip it through the slot. I later learned that this is not karaoke where you go in the order that you enter your song. Oh no, this guy is too good for that. He is curating the song list so that each song seamlessly flows into the next. Additionally, if you choose a song that doesn't suit the vibe of the place, it will never get chosen! That's bananas! No wonder he doesn't want people talking to him because he doesn't want any angry bar goers. I doubt many people get angry because through his careful curation of songs this place is always pumping! I cannot believe how packed it was on a Tuesday night. We probably had something to do with that, since I came with quite a few colleagues, and I heard that there was a birthday being celebrated as well. This means we were a sweaty jam-packed mess, but it was so totally worth it. If you're a karaoke person, you have to go here. Went here on New Years for a good time, but unfortunately left without a wallet since it was stolen out of my backpack. I don't typically leave negative reviews, but I feel compelled to after my experience because it was so odd. I came here last night for a quick drink or two after dinner and I was told by the bartender that they aren't "doing an old fashioned" because they didn't want to muddle anything, even though I didn't ask them to. I worked in bars and restaurants for over 10 years and always knew an old fashioned to be whiskey, bitters, and simple syrup--perhaps I'm wrong, but the bartender didn't ask or clarify. I would understand if they were busy, but there were only 4-5 people at the bar. It's one thing to say you don't have the ingredients to make something, but it's another to say you simply don't want to. It made me feel like I was a burden and I just ordered a beer instead. We would've stayed for more drinks or spent more money on cocktails if it weren't for the bartender's attitude, but we ended up leaving after one drink and going elsewhere. I went on a date last night that ended in a bit of bar hopping. It was around 10 and I was already super exhausted so we were walking back to the car...then all of a sudden I started hearing "man I feel like a woman" and turned my head to see a bar full of people singing karaoke and dancing! I just came to this bar with my friend for my 21st birthday. i encountered the rudest bar tender i have ever experienced. he mocked us for our drink order, he asked us how many drinks we wanted and we said 1, and he proceeded to give us 2 servings of the drink. when we told him we only wanted 1 drink, he aggressively spilled the second drink. When my friend told him that he was being rude, he kicked us out of the bar and told us we should "get the fuck out". he had a beard and brown hair and was short. I went to Tupelo last night & two men followed my friends and I for nearly half an hour. They constantly approached us & we nearly got into a physical altercation. We got security to come kick them out because they were being so creepy and aggressive. Security allowed the men to sit in the parklet and re-enter within 20 minutes. This place does not value women's safety. I would definitely recommend the bar across the street, Tope, they took our concerns seriously and when the men followed us into Tope, the security kicked them out. I was just extremely disappointed with how Tupelo completely disregarded sexual harassment. read more

So close to a 5 star place. I mean, what more do you really want out of a spot? This is a terrific bar and restaurant with a full bar and a nice menu of Southern and Bar Food. It is located on Grant Street in North Beach in the heart of fun. They even have live music. There is a good Happy Hour in which they have good beer for only $4. The space is great, and there is always some fun to be had. Eh... and it's a Boston bar. We're far enough past Fever Pitch that they don't think of themselves as the underdog anymore. I like Tupelo a lot. I will have to say that I think of it mainly as a bar and restaurant. I think they have a nice Happy Hour and I really enjoyed their Burger and Waffle Fries. Yes, they have Waffle Fries - one kind of potato based item that gives a Tater Tot a real run for the money. The Burger has a great flavor. They used to have a much broader menu, but they did what any smart restaurateur knows is the right move: Keep it simple. Keep the menu small. They have some great items and they also have a brunch menu. The bartenders are cool. I like the vibe a lot. I find this place to be great but just a bit too big and too popular on Fridays and Saturdays - I like a good mid-week chill vibe. It's like pre-Marina in here sometimes. You'll read a lot about the fratty side of this spot and it can be guilty of this trait. Grant Street is Grant Street. Everyone needs to make money, but Tupelo should capitalize on its great food and live music and worry less about Karaoke and 80's themed birthday parties. You are in North Beach. Loved the atmosphere of this place. We stopped in on my birthday because I wanted to hear live music. And in that area of little Italy there's a few. I wanted to check this one out in particular. Walked into a live blues band who was awesome. The drinks were probably average price for that area. The bartender and staff were friendly drinks were good. Music was great. When the band took a break they played blues to soul, booker t to Otis Redding, etc I'll definitely be back. read more

A few times a year I get to escape my San Diego "work island" in order to see some of my coworkers from around the globe. We talk shop, we spend time at HQ, we go to dinner, we have drinks, but our favorite bonding pastime would have to be: karaoke. For the past couple of years we searched for and found a few karaoke bars but we've had to be the ones to create the fun as the karaoke setup always seems to be, uh, kinda s#itty. Nope, not anymore, friends. We've now found Tupelo... more importantly, DJ Purple. As soon as we walked through the door on Tuesday night the vibe was infectious. Anyone who knows some good old fashioned karaoke can instantly tell that the quality of the equipment is top notch and the person running it definitely cares. The sound is good, smoke machines go off at exactly the right time, the songs are constantly adjusted for volume and pitch (so you would have to be REALLY bad to actually sound bad), and our favorite part of all, live saxophone! Seriously, grab a drink, pick a song and enjoy the show. It's fun, fun, fun, and all of us walked away from the experience rambling about how great Tupelo was for karaoke. Will be back? Hell yeah! Tuesday nights rock at this joint!...thanks to DJ Purple! It's rare to see a karaoke DJ bust out instruments and start playing (very well) with a karaoke singer. With his musical talents, adding his touch to make performances better...this one-man band makes Dance Karaoke Night thrive at Tupelo. It's kinda our company's work tradition to hit up a karaoke bar after dinner. As for myself, I am NOT a karaoke girl. However there are a TON of talented singers on our team, so it's actually very entertaining (and not torture) when I'm with the work crew/friends. On this most recent trip, we discovered Tupelo and became instant fans. Tuesday night is a karaoke circus. A big screen, a guy playing a keyboard and saxophone, laser lights, props .... it all adds to the performance and things get a bit cray up in there. Bartenders were attentive and fast with drinks. Why 4 stars? Because I witnessed some very entertaining Karaoke here. --- --- --- I have never been a big karaoke person, but sometimes you just have a 'When in Rome' moment. Oh, and that does not mean I actually sang. That would require being drunk in Rome. But I did watch it, and despite some people offering some rather typical, uninspiring performances, two people made it worth the visit. Soon after we arrived, a very unassuming and nerdy fellow got up on stage, and the microphone was like a cape for Clark Kent. He grabbed it, and he became someone else, while sharing his rendition of "When I move, you move, just like that." As soon as the song was over, he went back to the guy with glasses, and a long sleeve button down tucked into his khakis. My co-worker Jando doing Shaggy is something I'll never forget. It was so good, I don't think someone could feel pain while listening to that. Further description would be a disservice to this magical moment, so I'll leave it right there. This review didn't describe much about Tupelo. That's probably because I had a beer or two, watched some karaoke, tried to have yelling conversations with my co-workers over the loud music, and then headed on my way. The beer selection was a solid 3.5, but I rounded up because they provided Jando with the tools to become Shaggy for 4 minutes. read more

I've dropped into Tupelo a few times but Tuesday night is definitely worth checking out. There's karaoke with a live sax (9:30pm-1am)... lots of throwback to 90s jams. We had some drinks but it wasn't enough to get us on stage.. either way it was a lot of fun singing along to songs from way back when. It does get pretty crowded but it's a fun spot to check out. Came here with Rodney H, Bobby L & Peter L on a random Tuesday night after dinner. Peter had been here before and had a blast so we thought why not check it out?! All I have to say is that the DJ made the night for me! Tupelo has karaoke and a stage in the back. DJ Purple was running the karaoke and he was awesome! Out of the blue we'd hear a saxophone accompaniment and it turned out to be DJ purple! In need of a harmonica accompaniment, DJ purple to the rescue! Wanna sing a duet but you don't have a singing partner? DJ purple can do that. Need some backup singers? DJ purple is there for ya! Tuesday night, 11 30 pm. This place was exciting. Karaoke! If you love karaoke, this is where you need to be. It's like non stop fast pace karaoke fun. BRUNCH bad news, don't do it. I had a $30 Groupon. Brunch hours start at 10am, we got there around 10:20, found AMAZING lucky parking less than 50 feet away (GO Norman!) THE BRUNCH MENU has 5 items (only) 1) Breakfast cornmeal- seared shrimp, scallions, poached egg: $12 2) Pulled Pork Sandwich - slow braised pork, house slaw, french fries: $8 3) French Toast - Thick cut brioche, bacon, syrup: $11 4) Tupelo Hot wings - spicy wet wings, steak cut french fries: $9 5) American Breakfast- two eggs sunny side up, sausage, toast: $7 You seat yourself, Since we quickly realized we were gonna be hard-pressed to spend the $30 on food, we ordered a bloody mary for Norman ($8, and way too horse-radishy). The waitress told us the only two things the kitchen could make right now (since it was prepping) was the wings or the American breakfast. We decided to order the wings, and wait the 20 minutes until we could order something besides the American breakfast - AND to see how hungry we would be after the wings. (Though knowing what was to transpire, I wish I had just sold the Groupon to another neighboring table and left) Anyway - the table next to us orders and get their drinks. we wait for the bloody, then finally have to remind our waitress about the cocktail, she takes a while to get it and comes back and says the kitchen won't be ready for ANOTHER 35 minutes. We get the wings - the fries are under-done, and they were okay wings, nothing spectacular. But after we eat them we realize we are done with this place, that it might be another hour (or whoever knows how long until the kitchen is running, and if the wings were any indication of quality, why bother?) We spied a couple of old acquaintances at the bar who were drinking and watching football, and we asked our waitress to just credit the $15 we didn't spend on our Groupon and have it applied against their tab. (She said she would), the waitress was in a tough spot , she said it was her first day -and really most of the problems were coming from the kitchen. Now we will never know if the $15 credit got to our friends... but you win some, you lose some. To add complete insult to injury I went to the ladies room before I left and they have those HUGE TP rolls inside the plastic, and once one roll ends you slide the bottom to get to the other roll. Both rolls were full, but the only roll exposed was all wet, so impossible to get any quantity of paper off it other than in 1" wet scraps. All the other reviews about brunch are right. Sadly the dinner reviews looks good, but avoid at all costs for brunch! I would have been MUCH happier with a couple slices of Golden boy pizza! read more

So I have performed this bar before, and I came here with my brother to try and enjoy the live music. I really hate to say what I'm about to say but if you are colored, AT ALL COST, avoid a lady who acted very privileged that goes by Bronco who claims to own or run Tupelo. She was the absolute worst and as rude as she was being, it took EVERYTHING in me not to call her out of her name. A situation happened when my brother got his drink spilled buy a drunk guy. The guy offered to pay for it. So the guy and my brother goes to the bar to handle the situation and bronco blows the whole situation out of proportion based on whatever happened with her and my brother prior that I had nothing to do with. So I tried to explain to her the situation that happened but because her experience with him was different, she tried to make me out to be a liar and acted terribly sarcastic. She pulled me out side to talk but it was really so she didn't have to go through the process of kicking me out (which she eventually did for absolutely no reason). She asked me and my brother to let her explain what she experience and I respectfully let her. So when I tried to explain my side she rudely told me she doesn't have to listen to me over and over. So in her eyes I had to listen to her but she didn't have to hear me out? She through her "I'm the owner and I can do whatever I want card" around and when I tried to peacefully go back in, she said I'm not welcomed in there and I did absolutely to be put out. I asked her why and she had no idea explanation which is why, like I said, she took me outside to talk in the first place. But respectfully I left because her established wasn't good enough to go through that trouble and I'm not a trouble making person anyway. Theres a lot more to this summary including a different bar tender lying about being her in the first place but there's no need to explain. Terrible manager or whoever she claims to be and they are liars. Avoid this place at all cost. Literally the ONLY good thing about this place was the performers and the DJ. read more

The drinks are nice and strong and not overpriced, the service is good and the fried pickles... oh the fried pickles!!! If you've never had them before, they are a must try. If you have eaten fried pickles before, these will be better than you have ever had! Every time we have been to Tupelo, we have had a great time. The atmosphere is fun and inviting, but it never seems to get too crowded where it's stuffy and annoying. Definitely check it out if you are in the area! read more

Um, heck yeah! It wouldn't be a trip to San Francisco without karaoke, and I'm hoping this becomes our new go-to for our annual work get-togethers. We arrived a bit early so we were able to secure some prime real estate along the karaoke stage and get in a slew of song requests before things picked up about an hour after our arrival. While we were waiting for things to kick off I was able to take in the surroundings and I dug the vibe and decorations; it reminded me of some places around Austin, Texas. The bar is well-loved and arranged for prime karaoke excellence, including a large projector screen with lyrics instead of just a small TV or two. DJ Purple is unrivaled in my years of karaoke across many cities; even if you don't want to sing you're still going to love his show. Things got a little cramped as the night wore on, but it was never unbearable. I'll never forget my first rodeo at Tupelo and look forward to returning next year. read more

I've been to Tupelo tons of times for drinking and live music which is always a blast but this time I went for brunch and was pleasantly surprised! First of all, apparently not many people know that Tupelo has great food because it was almost empty for Saturday brunch. The wait staff is attentive, friendly, and funny. The food has a cajun southern theme so we had fried chicken and waffles, biscuits and gravy, and a shrimp po boy! Everything was fabulous, exactly what we were all craving. Best karaoke experience ever! Tupelo is a total dive bar and would not have been my first choice except that all my co-workers were meeting up there for karaoke and cocktails. But when I heard there would be a man playing a saxpphone I knew I had to see if for myself. We arrived just as karaoke was revving up and my co-workers opened with a fun 80s song. To my delight there was a small stage which erupted with smoke, disco lights and yes... a man playing a saxophone! Did I mention he also sings back-up and plays a kazoo? Am I now ready to die in karaoke heaven? YES. And then when you realize the karaoke DJ never smiles because created karaoke magic is just another night on the job, you really start crying from all the joy which is being created by everyone in the room screaming old school hits from the top of their lungs in unison. Why 4-stars? Bad wine. I know I should have known better, but it tasted like it was mixed with cat pee. Still, Tupelo is indeed a special place, and it will forever have 1st place on the San Francisco karaoke awards mantle that exists in my mind. read more
