Fun and casual! My friends and I came by McTeague's on St. Patrick's Day weekend as part of the "Lepracon" bar crawl. It is dingy and dark in there but not in a gross way by any means. It is just the eclectic and wildly decorated nature of bars like this. The decor is super fun and draws you in to stay for longer. Despite it being busy with a rowdy crowd, the service at the bar was very quick. The drinks were on the affordable end compared to the nearby bars. There is definitely a very friendly and light-hearted vibe about this place. I will be back! read more

So, my very first visit to this bar was just after noon, and I walked in to the glorious sight of He-Man cartoons on the TV - totally quirky - the cartoons were for adults lol! The place is like an 80s time capsule, with toys dangling from the ceiling and vintage rock stars plastered on the walls. I asked for a Bloody Mary with pickle juice, and it was a total game changer, so delicious. I came back, hoping for the same but alas, no pickle juice that day. Still, it was good and I had a blast, played some pool sipped a solid drink, and soaked in all the retro charm. I've been here more than a handful of times because I like a sturdy dive every once in a while. But I didn't feel motivated to review this longtime watering hole until today when I dropped by for a drink to avoid the rain for a bit. I thought for sure they'd offer an Irish coffee on a cold, wet day. But nope, despite seeing a coffee-maker behind the bar, I couldn't get one here despite what Google Maps says. I have to admit there has been something off every time I've come in here. I don't blame the bartenders who have been friendly enough but understandably drawn more to the regulars who just have what's on tap. I guess I'm more high maintenance because on a previous visit, I asked for an espresso martini. He didn't snicker, but I still felt like Mary Richards when Lou Grant told her to join him for a drink. Yes, I'm talking about "The Mary Tyler Moore Show". She asked for a Brandy Alexander when all Lou had was half a bottle of scotch. Obscure I know, but more depressing was overhearing a slacker make fun of his dad's favorite TV show, "Welcome Back Kotter". Anyway, they still make a stiff $8 Tequila Sunrise (Photo 10) and an even stiffer $9 Rum Punch (Photo 9). That should be enough, right? My friends and I were in town for a show and looking for a spot to catch UFC 324 over dinner. Our hotel bartender pointed us toward McTeague's, and it was a great recommendation! They have a fantastic "outside food welcome" policy, so we grabbed pizzas from across the street and headed in. The staff was incredibly cool about it..I even double-checked, and they didn't miss a beat. Jason was our bartender for the night and he was absolute magic..he kept the Vodka Red Bulls flowing and the vibes high. We started at the bar..made friends with some of the other bar guests..and eventually migrated to the benches in the back to mingle and watch the fights. Great drinks..great company..and just an all around 10/10 atmosphere. If you're in SF and want a chill bar to hang out with come to McTeague's. If I am in SF and want to watch the fight I will definitely come here again! read more

Basic dive bar in the Civic Center area. It kind of has an Irish theme but not really. McTeague's is one of the cheaper places to get wasted. Kind of dark in here. This is a good place if not caring about cleanliness and things. A long bar. It's where most people in here were at, but there still were a few stools open. The prices are the best thing. Cocktails here are relatively cheap. It's about $8 for Jameson. The bar is decorated in European soccer stuff. Of course not being drunk while watching it is the bullocks. This is certainly the place to get wild and crazy. Chill bar at other times when there's not a game or anything. It's good for a few cheap cocktails. This is a cool pub to hang out and have a drink. Came in after dinner from across the street to have a drink. There was a $10 cover charge because they had the UFC fight on. Wasn't too busy, no cocktail waitress, have to order at the bar. JD & Coke made pretty strong. They also allowed dog inside, as there were 3 to 4 dogs there. read more

Love a good dive bar that's spacious and with great decor, tons on tvs, great tunes and awesome service. Reserved the back bar for a private party. They roped off the back for us. Gave us access to our own speakers and tv, and checked in with us and was super attentive. Made sure we had water and a great time. Super grateful to the staff. this bar is very unprofessional. i had a small altercation with one of the security guards who proceeded to call me a fat ass bitch when i walked away cause he was too much of a puss to say it to my face. mind you i'm only 110 lbs. the manager didn't seem to care either. he then proceeded to call me all types of other names "hoe, slut, etc." , i didn't even step foot into the bar yet at that point. never had an experience like this at any other bar. they were just disrespectful and rude for no reason and i hope that security guard gets fired. he was tall , white, ugly, you won't miss him! read more

This has been my favorite, most comfortable bar where I feel the safest for twenty years. The original owner from Tejas who used to have Shiner kegs brought in is long gone, I guess, but it's a lovely Irish pub for people who find San Francisco to be our home. I always say: on the weekends, it's a great place to watch Footie with the Blokes, early in the morning. Any other business on Polk St could close and I would shrug. So many have. McTeagues is never going away, and I doubt I will ever feel unsafe here. read more

It's a great place to catch a happy hour pint, and a must for soccer fans. Also, and the youths seem to love it a bit later at night. If you're a craft cocktail person, Tuesday and Friday happy hour features Jason whose craft cocktails are on point. Actually my favorite "mixologist" in this city. read more

Ordered one beer and was willing to pay cash, given I hadn't ordered enough to meet the $15 minimum for my card on tab. However, the tender advised he went ahead and charged my card and the receipt noted the appropriate amount ($7). Went home and realized they actually charged me $25 dollars. I felt like I was in the tropics. Minus the 50 degree temperature on a cold SF night. Incredibly friendly staff and great customer service. My wife is pregnant and they made sure she felt a part of the group by recommending some very tasty non alcoholic cocktails. The Mai Thai w/ alcohol was MY favorite and she liked her non schoolchildren version too. Loved the Tiki theme! During COVID, there is outdoor seating for a party of 2-6. The owner is so nice!! We went to watch the England vs France World Cup game and it was packed! The environment was so fun to watch the game. The owner ended up giving us 4 free beers which was awesome. Prices aren't super expensive for San Francisco either. Highly recommend!! read more

I like that this is a laid back spot. Friendly crowd. I'd say, Mid 20s n above. 2 bars, one in front, one at the back. If you like to dance, good place. But its ovi, that music is some sort of spotify or pandora. But that's fine, because there is no cover fee. Cocktails are not that great so just get shots. Wish they served finger food. read more

It pays to be a mellow, fun loving kind of chap at McTeague's. Why? The bartenders will remember you, treat you well, and they will be your best friends. Like best friends do, they are willing to back you up when the time comes. By nature I'm a very relaxed guy. I like to watch football here for 6 hours and chat it up all Sunday long. A few weeks back though, I came as close to knocking out some teeth as I have in a very long time. A drunk, mouthy individual would not shut up. He just wouldn't, and he was directing his booze soaked ire to the left side of my face. For about 30 minutes. The observant bartenders warned him. They told him he was pissing people off and needed to have a nice glass of shut the hell up. But would he listen? Nawwwwww, he was drunk. You know how that goes. The bartenders who know me, know my demeanor, could smell something was wrong. The comments after the fact were that they'd never seen Justin like that before. I was ready to rip his head off. Perhaps me smacking his hand out of my vicinity and yelling point blank two inches from his face to shut the fuck up gave me away. I'm not positive. Before I snapped and caught me an assault charge they 86ed him and sent his ass packing. That's good business right there, they recognized me as a regular and a fairly happy one at that. To evaluate and say hey, we know this guy and he's not like this. Something is amiss, we need to fix it. Well played, if it wasn't me that douche would have been pissing off another patron, I guarantee it. I calmed down about 10 minutes after he bounced. We had a shot and laughed it off. I tried to buy but they were having none of it. I explained the sitch to maybe 10 bar goers who approached me and said "Dude... you were super pissed..... what did he do?" Luckily it went no further, McTeague's had my back and vicariously that means if you're a good customer who doesn't start shit, they'll back you up too. I really appreciated that. Some bars will ignore and let the dust settle as it will. They treated me, a frequent visitor, with respect and remedied the situation before that asshole made me remedy it myself. I like McTeague's, and I like knowing that they care enough to take care of decent customers. What's there not to like about here. . Yea bright outside dark inside takes a min for the eyes to adjust. . But as soon as I seen the prices which is lower than the one next door this is the place. Well I guess any saloon is always a place to crash at and fill up with good strong drinks. . Well since I'm waiting for dinner might as well come in and get a drink. 3 dollar line star been a while since I last had some in San Antonio. . Nice space, dog friendly, pool tables. Decent selection of drinks and the staff were kind and helpful - one person in fact told us the lore of McTeague (the eponymous figure) while we browsed the photos and posters in the back of the bar. Came here last Friday to take out family from out of town. Was looking for another place in the area but this place seemed to be the lively! There was no cover which was nice. The three security members were outside checking ID's. That processed seemed easy enough. Once inside you first see the open floor area, the bar to the left, and some booths over to the far right. I didn't get a chance to travel any further back because it was packed but not to the max yet. When to the part first to get some drinks. It seemed like this place was a bit understaffed. Lots of people were ordering drinks but only a few were being attended to you. I couldn't help but see the blatant conversation going on between two bartenders who were not helping anyone until they had decided to end their conversation and then decided to attend to the eager customers looking to order drinks, just odd and peculiar but oh well I guess. The vibe of the crowd was mixed. I would say that the demographic was that of early to late 20s. Not too much of a rowdy crowd but eventually the Saloon did eventually fill up. The bathroom was gross but that was to be expected. Just foul in every way imaginable. The dancing is not really what you anticipate but then again it is a bar not a club. Everyone is dancing in their own world, more or less. If you come with a group then you should be good but be careful. There are some questionable folks that will wonder around looking suspect and suspicious, hold your wallets and phones close to you. Stayed here till about midnight and then we had to go. This place just did not meet the expectations of a Friday night in San Francisco. Might have to give Vertigo Bar a try next time. Just an okay experience. Oh, some of the mixed drinks are a bit watered down. That is probably a result of the amount of ice that is used in making their drinks. Security wouldn't let us go back in to find her belongings and I heard them laugh and say it's her fault from leaving it on the bar... she didn't it was stolen from her. This bar is sooo much fun - I came here with a group of friends for a birthday and this is totally on my list of Polk Street bars to go to. The bartenders are super fun and friendly, they have affordable drinks, several giant TV screens playing music videos, and a dance floor in the back. When we went, they were playing oldies from late 90s to early 2000s!! McT's is def a fun place to turn up to! read more

I had never experienced discrimination as heavily as I did last night while at this bar. I stood at the bar for over 30 minutes waiting for a bartender to serve me and my group of friends who are also people of color. I watched as the bartender only attended to those that were Caucasian. He glanced over us and didn't even make eye contact as we spent so long trying to flag him down. I literally watched him serve the people next to us who only had to wait no more than 5 minutes to order. At first I thought I was looking too much into it, but it kept happening!! Final straw was when I watched him take shots with a group of Caucasian girls right next to us and then left to go to the other side of the bar to help out another Caucasian group. This place isn't welcoming to people of color. Never coming here again. read more

As a black identified person in SF, I understand SF. To go into a bar and be ignored for 20mins at the back bar with many Caucasian people beside me walking up and being served immediately, (there were other African American men beside me that waited and were ignored also, we did not know each other) was inconceivable. I to test if I was "being that guy" asked a white female to order a drink for me, she was able to order and secure my drink within 5 mins of being at the bar. This was demeaning and deflating. The back bar tender once he realized it was for me, throw the drink at me. I spoke to the manager Scott? to escalate this experience and was basically told he was to busy to address this issue and the back bar tender was "not that way". As a hard working person in San Francisco and a business owner myself, I understand busy days. Racism and discrimination is never ok and dismissal as a manager is never ok. I'm not a person to "play the race card" but you know when people address and serve you by the color of your skin and not the color of your money. I'm dismayed at the thought that as a liberal identified city, I have to write this review. I am bewildered that in 2023, no matter what job or social economic plight I have, in this bar tonight, the color of my skin was not worth the color of my money and this experience took me from a great night with friends to a sobering experience that race/ethnicity in SF dictates the level of service and importance I receive. If you are a person of color, I would not recommend this bar, spend your hard earned income at a place that sees you, recognizes you, and treats you by the content of your character and not the color of your skin. I came here on Christmas Eve around 4pm to get a few drinks and my experience was great! There wasn't many people since it was still early which is perfect for me because I don't like crowded places. Bartender was friendly and 3 drinks for only $27. Definitely will be back! read more
