Great indian food. I've only ordered it from The Takeout Guys so I can only attest to their food and not the location. The food tastes authentic and can be made "traditionally spicy". I like very spicy food and this place has done a great job in matching my palate. However, the prices are a bit high for the portions they give. I paid a little less than 30$ (without delivery tip/fee) for a chicken tikka masala and garlic naan bread. First, I have to say that I'm extremely picky when it comes to Indian food. I've been wanting to try this place for ages, but when they first opened in a smaller location it was impossible to get a table. Well, we finally got around to trying it and I was pleasantly surprised. We were pleasantly surprised that they had Malbec wine on the wine list and I had a funky martini that was very good. We were very happy to see so many vegan and gluten-free items on the menu! For appetizer we had the spinach pakoras and couldn't believe how light and fluffy they were. I could have eaten a dozen or two of those. For entrees we had the chicken tikka masala and lamb jalfrezi and both dishes were excellent. The garlic naan could have been a bit heavier on the garlic, but overall it was a very good meal. Our waitress was also a doll and was very helpful. Will be going back soon! read more

I grew up in York/Kittery/Portsmouth and have watched the progression of this area from seaside lobsterman land to crazy stupid hipster haven...and when I first walked into Tulsi I was a little sketched that it was going to be a representation of all image and no substance. We waited at the podium for about 7 minutes waiting for a seat before the one girl in the room was able to get to us. Kudos to her for being able to keep everything on the straight and narrow, and seeing the lack of assistance she had I can forgive the less than 10 minute wait. We decided to perch alongside the wrap around the 90* bar and wait for menus, water, etc. Again, it took some time to be assisted and we took this que as a reason to get our orders ready to rock the minute she came back for our drink choices. Complimentary papadum was appreciated, though I could have a used a little more of the coriander sauce. My curried Manhattan was an interesting drink, but I think a regular would have been just as good. Our little appetizer of fried happiness arrived shortly thereafter, but we were starving and had to hag on the bartender for a little more papadum which she was more than happy to deliver. Dinner came about 20 minutes later and between my kadhi paneer and the two offerings of naan that I ordered, I was pretty much overjoyed. Similar to the one meal I had at Gaylords, this dish wasn't a main show of ghee and cream and sleep inducing fat. There was an ample amount for a dinner and while it could have been a little bit hotter, the flavor was awesome. My friend ordered the saag, which I'd never had before...so I can't really say anything more than it tasted like steamed spinach..and that's all. We grabbed a glass of wine at this point and our service picked up when the mass exodus occurred 2 hours after we had arrived. I'd meant to check out Tulsi a few years back, but I'd never gotten around to it. I was visiting Maine so thought I'd check out this place. I was pleasantly surprised! Food: Very good. Samosas were really tasty. Lachha paratha was nice! Peshawari paratha was sweet, but it had nuts so it was expected. Garlic naan and onion naan were good too. We ordered Paneer butter masala (good), bhindi masala (good) and Chicken Chettinad (very good). Customer service: Very good. All the waiters were friendly! Hygiene/Ambience: Very clean, the ambience is good. Price: The prices are moderate, we were 4 people and our bill was $86. I thought it was worth it though. Stopped in last night as it's been a while. Quick seating, attentive and professional (nice) waiter quickly delivered beverages and delicious special veggie samosas for an app. We wolfed them down and soon found our main course in front of us. I had ordered the pork vindaloo entree and my son the chicken pakora app. The Vindaloo came with a bowl of rice that was approx 3/4 full and the same for the vindaloo itself. The Vindaloo sauce itself was good and spicy but the plentiful chunks of pork were dry and a few chunks had gristle/fat that could have been cut away. There was none of the tender melt in your mouth pork that I would expect. The chicken pakora portion was good but again, the chicken was dry and had too much gristle in the pieces. I've eaten here a number of times before and had excellent food but this time it was below what I would consider average. I'm not sure why the quality has diminished but hope it was an off night. read more

Incredible spices in the Kadhai Paneer, as well as the Bhindi Masala. Make sure to get some Raita if you're not used to handling spice--I consider myself a big ole wimp and medium is fine for me. TL;DR: Spectacular Indian find that's unexpected for its area. Though a bit pricy ($25/person), it's completely worth it. Better than most other places I've been to around the country. My dining partner was craving Indian, as he usually does, and we decided to come to Tulsi. Upon arrival, it looks very unassuming - a small, squat building on the side of the road that features some Indian-inspired decor upon walking in. Food: Two of us ordered the aloo gobi, paneer saagwala, and garlic naan. I was skeptical of this Indian place in Maine, but when the food came out, everything was fantastic. My aloo gobi was just the right amount of spicy, the paneer saagwala was super creamy and garlic naan crispy and flavorful. Nothing was too greasy or oily, as tends to be the case at some Indian places, and we finished everything. One note - our rice portions could have been larger, since we supplemented it with naan and finished both. Their vegetarian selections were super extensive, which I appreciated. If I were to come back - which I definitely would - I'd have plenty else to choose from, and I'm sure they would be great as well. It's slim pickings for vegetarians on vacation in Maine, so when my vegetarian partner and I were on vacation recently and she didn't want yet another lame pasta dish at a seafood restaurant, we searched for Indian food and crossed our fingers there would actually be some. Surprise! There is, and it's tasty! We had a pretty standard meal - papadum for the table, she had Paneer Makhanwalam, I had Chicken Chettinad, we split some naan. The spice levels were good, and modifiable, which is always a plus (I like things slightly less mild than standard, she likes things spicier than standard). The portions were perfect, and the service was good (no reservations, walked in at a normal dinner time on a weeknight, no wait and quick seating). Since we go to York Beach every year, I can imagine heading to Kittery and going to Tulsi every year as well. Glad it's there! read more

Brunched at Tulsi recently with some friends. The place is simple yet elegant, the servers were understated and professional. The brunch, however was magnificent. The cilantro chicken and naan were outstanding. The rest :chicken Tikka, tandoori, palak paneer, goat curry, rices, were delicious as well. My only complaint, not impressed with the dessert options. My husband and I go to Tulsi often. We are locals and consider the food there some of the best around. The atmosphere is also cozy and staff is very friendly. As frequent visitors, we also know when comparing service to the many other restaurants in the area, more often than not service is a bit slow. Maybe bussing staff could take drink orders and deliver, if waitstaff is behind. In any case, we cannot stay away because the food is so good and the atmosphere so cozy. read more

As a past regular customer I was very disappointed in what has become of the service at Tulsi. When one of the owners were around , especially when it was new, servers were terrific and attentive. My wife and I visited for her birthday on October 26th a little before six pm. The hostess said there would be a wait or we could take the small table at the end of the bar. We asked if the full menu was served there and she said of course. We were seated and water and menus brought over. We thought it was fortunate. After about fifteen minutes and no one asking if we wanted anything, a staff member came out of the kitchen, not sure what his position was, and bluntly said " you have to leave" we asked why and he said " The table is reserved". We pointed out we didn't get on the list because we were seated there and additionally there was now a substantial line? " friends are coming in at 7. You have to leave ." That time was quite a bit louder. He also crowded in on the table very rudely and kept saying as we were getting up, " you need to leave". An hour before his friends arrived. He meant for us to leave the table , we went to Anneke Jans and had a terrific meal with stellar service. So many choices in the fireside area. With restaurant week coming why waste it ? This has got to be some of the best Indian food I have ever done et. Just walking in to this joint you are bathed in aromas most enticing, and you sort of feel that this is going to be some special grub. There is a plaque on the wall claiming that this place was voted one of the best Indian restaurants in the whole freaking country. Not sure if that is PRBS, but it is definitely ALL THAT!!! Oh the curries were really good, and especially their Vindaloo, and the Okra was to die for, and even the Tikka Masala was super creamy, smooth, and rich. As far as I remember, though, there were no dosas, but I am not going to take a star off for that, since most Indian restaurants don't serve the magical dosa. There is one in South Portland that does, though, called Taj India, and that is worth a 4-hour drive down drive from Fort Kent just for the experience!!! Breads were decent, loved the fried cauliflower appetizer, and those shrimps you have to order, one of the best things of the whole night!! It is kind of pricey, but go ahead, save up your quarters and treat yourself!! I for one may even come back to this place next time I hit up Kittery, and skip the Black Birch, pretty much one of my favorite places in all of southern Maine. read more

We spontaneously drove down to Tulsi to try it out one night after a recommendation, and at 7:30 on a Wednesday this place was packed! We grabbed two of the few seats left at the bar, and were admittedly somewhat apprehensive of how good the food will be. I ordered the spinach pakora app and my old standby - aloo ghobi, and the bf had chicken tikka marsala with naan. The food came out hot and tasty, we really enjoyed everything. It was the first time I've had authentic Indian food since moving up to the sea coast, and we were pleased. The service, at least at the bar, was quite good. The bartender was super nice and friendly. I would definitely return, probably with a reservation, for dinner at a table. read more

Ordered food from here a couple times. My experience has been that the Chana Masala is overly oily. The Garlic Nan also doesn't have the garlic cooked into it, rather it appears sprinkled on the top and brushed in oil or butter. The Nan is also not soft, but rather seems to have been pre-cooked and then just re-heated in a pan. read more

I generally like it here. Great tasting Indian food. The pork vindaloo is spicy and incredible. Chicken tikka masala is super good. The naan is delicious and traditional, although I am not a fan of their take on my usual favorite peshwari naan (they use coconut to make it very sweet). Service has always been nice and accommodating, although one time it was clear we spent too much time in our seat and they were not overly subtle in getting us to pay our check and move on. Besides that, I've been here probably 10 times and only have had one slightly negative experience with the food. I called in take-out a couple of weeks ago and the woman on the phone told me it would be 35 minutes before it was ready. No problem, I thought, they're probably slammed so they can't prepare the food any faster. When I got there, there was only one couple in the restaurant. Why did it take 35 minutes for a simple two-entree take out order? Additionally, I ordered my wife's food mild and they made it just as spicy as my "hot" dish. Why bother asking if you're not going to monitor the spice? The food was very oily that night, so I can only assume they didn't have their A-team in the kitchen. Beautifully decorated. Excellent food. Raj one of the the chef-owner is one of the most personable and accomodating hosts I have ever met. I've visited Tulsi several times while visiting friends in NH It seems to get better each time .just about everything on the menu is cooked to order...the cooks arer very acomodating about adjusting the spices for the more timid palate. The un-sung heroes on the menu are some of the vegetable dishes and/or appetizers. When my friend suggested we order the fried cauliflower I was less than enthusiatic...it was superb...battered and crisp fried...it was one of the stand out items of our meal. The time before Raj sugggested fried okra ( I blanched...but said I'd try it...) flash fried and then rolled in a spice paste.... again , just superb. The kasmiri Lamb curry was also delicious....the lamb was "fork-tender". Bar offers exceptional mixed drinks. The Chai martini was delicious. Went home and tried to duplicate it the very next night. The only minus continues to be the wait-staff. They seem indifferent,; they are NOT familiar with the menu ....they may or may not suggest specials or offer dessert. Last visit our waiter did not know the specials claiming " he had just walked in the door" WE asked that he find out He returned to tell us " Well, you know, the cooks are Indian, and they're just not communicating very well. The specials are biryani (OKI . I knew what that was....but many diners would not....) and some kind of chicken soup. Really? How descriptive. Tulsi has good service, but food here is just average for Indian cuisine. Naan bread was served hot, but seemed a bit too dry. Let me start by saying the food at Tulsi is among the best Indian food on the Seacoast. Consistent, delicious and well prepared. Here are the problems: Price. My wife and I have ordered take out dozens of times since moving to Kittery. If we are VERY careful with our order we can eat take out for under $40. Having said that. Ordering food that you really want to try or perhaps have a few leftovers will cost you in excess of $60. That's for take out remember. Service. I have never been treated to poorly at a restaurant. Others have mentioned the poor service and I agree. I can see Tulsi from my living room. Often I will order, wait the 30-40 suggested minutes before heading over, then wait another 30 minutes before my order is ready. On my last visit a family that came in 10 minutes after I had arrived had their drinks and dinner served before I left with my take out. The staff ignores you, never apologizes and generally makes you feel weird. As others have said, you sit or stand awkwardly with many other people, waiting for someone to acknowledge you. Unfortunately my days eating the amazing food at Tulsi are over. I just can't see past the superiorly poor service. read more
