Nan Keema Mutter Lunch Special Mango lassi

This is a WONDERFUL restaurant! The food is amazing and the staff are very polite and friendly. The mango lassi and keema are well worth the trip from Maine.

We have been to Shalimar twice and love the food and experience. This time I ordered the butter chicken ( medium spice). It could have been a little more spicy. My wife got the shrimp with vegetables. We shared garlic naan bread as well as Samosas. Both were delicious. Service was ok. We saw other tables having their waiter/waitress attend to them. We waited awhile to see our server and he didn't show up again much after the order. I feel he might have also been the bartender. Not sure. Either way while he wasn't good we enjoyed.

I love the food here! I've been a loyal customer for over a decade now and seen this business grow so much. The service is always attentive! The restaurant provides a calm and intimate ambiance without trying too hard. There are many different options for those who are not so accustomed to spicy food but still looking for a new experience. I like trying a new item every time I go. I highly recommend this restaurant for any foodie exploring downtown Portsmouth.

My favorite Indian in Portsmouth. Service is prompt and professional. The space is large but welcoming. Both lunch and dinner are good. Lunch specials run around $15, come with soup, and are enough for dinner later. I most recently had the lamb vindaloo, spicy - which wasn't overly spicy:+)- but the sauce texture and lamb were good, and the rice perfect. Riata was a tad on the heavy side but freshly prepared and tasty. I ordered plain nan . It came with oil/butter already on it. I prefer dry nan, but thats a personal thing. The chicken dishes hv been very good for dinner also. The beer and wine section is fairly extensive, if not perfectly curated, and there is a bar as well - you'll find something to your liking. Overall, my choice in town.

Was looking for some indian food in Portsmouth and Durban was closed so went here. Either I ordered poorly or the food is bland or both. The ambiance is nice. They have tons of indoor tables and the service was polite and attentive. We ordered the chicken soup, the non vegetarian appetizer and the vegetarian appetizer. The chicken soup was really good. The broth was flavorful and spicy. There were big chunks of chicken and veggies in it. Unfortunately the other two appetizers were not very tasty. Nearly everything was fried and very bland. The only exception was the lamb- that was tasty though not quite hot enough.

When we arrived, there was no wait time, the tables filled up, but not completely, by the time we were leaving. The restaurant is dimly lit with fancy stained-glass lamps. We had several different servers during our dining experience. They had a very large menu with many options. I started with a mocktail that involved guava and jalapeno, I was not impressed, it lacked any flavor whatsoever and just tasted like a flat sprite, I did not finish the drink, I should've gone with the mango lassi that I was debating about. The food portions were very big, enough to have a second meal for leftovers. I had the chicken rice biryani with medium spice level that I also was not impressed with. The dish lacked taste and there was no spice at all, the chicken was very dry and difficult to eat. I have had better Indian food elsewhere. Towards the end of our dining, we felt very rushed by another server who was quick to offer us to go boxes and get us on our way, we weren't even there for an hour yet. Prices were on the higher side, a cocktail about $15 but as expected for the Portsmouth area. Paid street parking if you're lucky, otherwise there's a parking garage right next store.

Palak Paneer

We love Shalimar and have been going for years. This is our first published review but is consistent with our former visits. We ordered off the lunch menu because we like to eat early. We ordered the Palak Paneer and the Shrimp Curry. Both of these come with options of Mulligatawny soup and salad, (among others) and both of those are so independently delicious, they really ramp up the appetite. Also we ordered the garlic naan and the cheese garlic naan,...great additions to take advantage of the tasty sauces. (Somehow I missed getting pic of these). Service was attentive and timely. We always enjoy the music and general atmosphere of this restaurant. We'll go back many times.

Everything was great. Food, service, and atmosphere. I'm a bit of an Indian cuisine neophyte, this was an excellent experience.

Very good food. Very consistent. First place I have ever been to that can accommodate my oil. And can make things dairy free too.

The chicken korma was delicious! with fresh cashew nuts and spiced to taste, which is another plus. I chose medium heat, and it was the perfect blend of not too mild, not too spicy. The garlic cheese naan was spectacular; very generous portion of bread that i dipped in the korma gravy. Generous portions for the price. A nice alternative to seafood near Hampton beach.

Absolutely exceptional! Truly a hidden gem!…read more My husband and I LOVE Indian food, and we have been meaning to try Destination India for a while. We have eaten at most of the Indian restaurants in the area, so we have tried a lot of different places. This was our first visit here, and WOW! We were incredibly impressed from the moment we walked in. I actually remember this building being a Denny's when I was younger, and I cannot believe the transformation! The owners did an amazing job with the interior. It is warm, cozy, beautifully decorated, and extremely clean. The lighting, flooring, gorgeous bar, and all of the little details make it feel welcoming and upscale while still being comfortable. I only wish I had taken pictures! And then there is the food. Absolutely phenomenal! Everything tasted incredibly fresh and was packed with flavor. Every single thing we ordered was delicious. You can tell there is so much care going into the ingredients, preparation, and presentation. One thing I especially appreciated was how clearly the menu identified common allergens like gluten, dairy, and nuts. I am gluten free, and eating out can sometimes be frustrating, but I had so many options here! It made ordering incredibly easy and gave me confidence in what I was choosing. The staff was also wonderful. Everyone was friendly, welcoming, attentive, and genuinely seemed to care that we were enjoying our experience. I truly cannot say enough good things about this place. Beautiful atmosphere, exceptional food, wonderful service, generous portions, and incredible attention to detail. We brought home so much food that I am pretty sure we will be enjoying it for lunch AND dinner tomorrow, and I am already looking forward to it! Destination India is truly a hidden gem, and I am so glad we finally tried it. This will absolutely be a place we return to again and again. If you love Indian food, or have been wanting to try it, do yourself a favor and go. You will not be disappointed! Five stars across the board!

When my friend, Dee and I went in at 11:50am we were the only ones there and greeted very nicely by Ankush who is most likely the manager of his family's restaurant. We sat at the bar and Ankush gave us both drink and entree menus. For a drink, he made me a delicious coconut margarita and Dee got a blend of green teas and other flavors. Sladen was the chef and came out to check on everything we ordered. Both Dee and I got plain and garlic Naan bread which was awesome. I had the Tandoori chicken served with rice and sauce and Dee had the Chana Masala which was a moderately spicy, hearty and saucy chickpea and tomato dish with Indian spices. Both dishes were huge and I took home enough for 2 more meals. The Tandoori chicken which was actually a one-half Cornish Hen marinated in yogurt and spices served was only $24 and Dee's was $18. Most reasonable. Can't wait to go at night!

The Tandoori tikka kebab meal, and the Gobi Manchurian (cauli) appetizer both really stood out and were phenomenal. The gobi is so good it almost had me fooled that i was eating chicken instead of cauliflower. I ordered a papadum, a few different naans, a mango lassi, and even chicken tikka masala. It was all very very good.

The food was excellent with great spices that aren't muted like many of the super Americanized Indian restaurants around. You can really taste and smell the spices and that really is something I've been missing in other Indian restaurants. The portions are great. Biriyani wasextremely flavorful chicken and nicely spiced rice. The rice texture was perfectly fluffy and not oily or anything like that. We also got a bunch of different grilled chickens to go (tandoori, etc), and they were all nothing short of amazing. Definitely give this place a chance if you want some very good Indian food. We will definitely be back.

We ordered lentil soup, samosa chaat, chicken tikka, mango pickle aka Achar, raita (which comes in a to go container) plain naan and garlic naan. The achar was so good and it was the first time I actually tasted the mango in it. I loved the samosa chaat however my Pakistani husband said it was just okay but very fresh. The naan is tandoor baked, thin, and fresh. Everything else was delicious, we both agreed. Unfortunately the food came out in a strange order, with the soup coming out last, and we would have liked to enjoy the soup first. The waitress who sat us was very warm and polite and even came running from out back when we made eye contact (I was looking behind me towards the fridge to see what drinks they had, but she thought I was looking at her.) Our waitress (Nepali, long hair) was sort of correcting me while I was ordering. I asked for mango pickle, she looked at my husband and said "you want achar?" My husband asked if a dish was spicy, she looked at me and said we can make it mild (he can't have spicy, I can) My husband had recent dental work and is avoiding spicy food. She was talking really nicely to him, but kind of talked down to me like I'm a dumb Gori who doesn't know anything about desi food. As she started bringing food out I asked if she got the order for garlic naan. She said she'll add it. When we were ordering I feel like she was not interested in paying attention to what I was saying. It was to the point of making me uncomfortable. I was already tired from a long 2 days of our road trip including driving about 15 hours. I didn't have the energy to say anything to her. After asking for the garlic naan, her attitude was harsher towards me. Towards the end of the meal, I was talking with my husband and said the food is really good here, but the service could improve. I didn't yell, I was speaking to him. Waitress comes by immediately and says if you like the food and service, please leave a review. It really helps our restaurant... She gave me a dirty look, and by this time, my husband really noticed (I didn't say anything to him as he was the one driving us and was tired and silly girl behavior is something I typically try to look past) We ate here on Monday October 5 for dinner. There was a man eating alone and I noticed both waitresses were talkative and polite with him. To be fair. My impression is our waitress was taking out her bad mood or whatever on me. She was almost bullying me. I was so tired, too tired to say anything. But if she acts like this with other customers, the restaurant will lose. The food is delicious, the chef is excellent. This waitress? Poor, poor experience.
