Once he came over, he didn't suggest or do anything excessive, only what needed to be done meet our concerns. What I think I appreciate the most is that because we were out of town for a stretch, we didn't have immediate accessibility and capability to know exactly what needed to be done. Howard offered to help out in any way possible, including future check-ins, if necessary. It was a welcome service and communication that is lacking in a lot of handyman businesses these days.

But I chose to call instead and actually spoke with Howard, to whom I described the work we needed done, and who told me to email Robin again and she would schedule the project. We agreed on an appointment time, and then they canceled the first appointment, saying another customer had an emergency, with very short notice, but gave us a ballpark for a reschedule, nearly two weeks later. I emailed back to ask for a possible date and time, and when I did not hear back, I emailed again to ask them to please let me know if they did not have time for us. But they got back to me and asked for our availability. We then scheduled a second appointment, but.....drum roll.....they then cancelled THAT appointment as well the morning of, saying they did not have time to commit to our project. Both times we had made special arrangements for someone to be here when they came. They strung us along for weeks, which I find highly unprofessional. I would be ashamed to conduct my business like this. Needless to say, we will not be using them now or in the future, nor can we in all good conscience be recommending them to anyone else. I requested that they come out to hang 5 curtain rods and to replace a toilet. I was very clear with them that the toilet needed to be hauled away for disposal. I had an appointment set for a Thursday at 8:30am. I confirmed that appointment again two days before they were due here. The night before, they told me they had another job to go to at 7am and said they would be here between 10-11am. They finally showed up at around 1:45-2pm. Because of the way the building is constructed, they had some trouble finding where to drill holes to hang the curtain rods. So in one of my rooms, I have holes in my walls that they drilled and were supposed to fix before they left. They did not. They also did not remove the toilet. So, I was stuck with a toilet sitting in my office. They were supposed to come back today, a week later, to remove it, fix the wall, and finish some other small projects. I emailed them over the weekend to confirm but didn't receive a response. They finally confirmed at 5:30am today that they would be here at 8:30. No one showed up. So I called. Goes straight to a messaging service. Left a message. Emailed them to let them know they have to be here by 8:45 so I can let them in and show them what needs to be done because I will be tied up after that. No response. Someone finally showed up at 9:30. But I had already emailed them a second time at 8:55am to say don't bother coming back. I will go to task rabbit to find someone reliable to do this work. Fortunately, in anticipation of this happening based on what happened last week, I had already gotten a junk hauler to get the toilet out of my office on Saturday.

I don't know why I ever bothered contacting anyone else for handyman services…read more Michael has come up more than once when someone in the neighborhood Facebook group has been seeking a handyman. It was my fault that I didn't go with him from the get-go. I had experiences with two others that were terrible: The first one installed a couple things that were falling out by the time he left, and the second one apparently doesn't need business because he didn't respond to me for over 10 days after coming to take a look at what I needed. But anyway, this review is about the AWESOMENESS that is Michael! He responded within a day of my contacting him, which was a great place to start. He asked me to let him know what I needed and set up a time within a week or so. Then he contacted me to let me know he'd had a cancellation and could come three days earlier if I wanted! Yes please!! Michael is so personable. I liked him from the moment I opened the door, literally. One of the first things he said to me was "Can I tell you something about this door?" Apparently he has lots of customers who don't realize their storm doors have a screen and wanted to show me (I already knew though!). The most important task I had for him on this visit was to reattach the handrail that had been removed by some movers, and which had before they removed it been loose and coming out of the wall. That handrail is now rock solid. I honestly think I could hang from it (and I'm not a small gal) and it would not budge. He patched the drywall from where it had been coming out of the wall, and then he checked the remaining four or five handrails in the house to make sure they are equally as strong. He also gave tips on some filters for the furnace, and suggestions for smoke detectors--which was very timely, because I had been researching them before he visited. He's not inexpensive but he's worth every darn penny. I won't ever use another handyman whilst I live here, and I'm already feeling sad in my heart that if/when we do move, it'll probably be to a near suburb or outlying neighborhood like Norwood Park that he doesn't service and I'm mourning the loss of this awesome dude as my go-to handymensch.
