Whenever I go to a fast food restaurant, there's three things I consider: the burger, the fries, and the shake. The Burger: Trueburger does not serve smash-burger style burgers similar to places like Super Duper. Instead they deliver a traditional hamburger, with fresh patties that gush flavor, especially if you order the Double-Up. Ordered at medium-rare, the burger is perfect, though you may want to consider grabbing some utensils as the bun can quickly be overwhelmed by the patties. The Fries: Fresh, crisp, and lightly salted - as all fries should be. A perfect side to your burger and not overwhelming the main course. If you want to get something more intense, you can go for their solid garlic fries. The Shake: Wherever I am, my go-to is always a strawberry malt milkshake. While still sweet, it leans much more toward being creamy than an artificial-sweetness that can leave your throat begging for water. Plus they have a variety of unique shakes you can try, which include banana and toasted marshmallow. California is know for some pretty big name burger chains, however, it's the little guys that often pack the biggest punch. Shucks! I was hoping for a repeat experience but TrueBurger either let me down or my expectations were simply too high. We both got True Deluxe Burgers. The meat patty was too well done for me. I prefer medium rare but will live with medium. Today was closer to medium well. The mushroom was good. The cheese was good. The lettuce and tomato were sparse and she forgot to ask for the onion and pickle. (sigh) It's still a good burger but I want more! Cheesy fries were a special today. Tasted like Nacho Cheese over fries. Good, not great. I would reduce the salt if there's going to be cheese on top. The Chocolate Shake was thick! This Bay Area classic is best burger there is in my book. You'll catch me randomly craving TrueBurger specifically. Something about that cracked out garlic aioli spread that really ties the entire burger together. Every bite is juicy and with the thickness. Their menu is fairly simple, burger, cheeseburgers, vegetarian option and a hotdog. My ultimate go to is the Bacon Cheesy TrueBurger and you can't forget to ask them for pickles! Onions and pickles are free, but just remember to ask them for it. I'm a sucker for their garlic fries - so much garlic and such a good crispy to every bite! You will get some super garlic breath, so make sure you have some gum on hand, haha. Otherwise, the portion is honestly big enough for 2 people to share. I've heard great things about their milkshakes from people I've taken to TrueBurger, but milkshakes aren't my thing. Their whole pickle is chef's kiss! There is street, metered parking outside. Very small place, so I would take it to go and eat it in your car or at Lake Merritt. They take card and cash. I'm a huge fan of convenience, especially during the pandemic when they were able to stay open and utilized online ordering. However, unless you're ordering delivery, I recommend you to use their online system to order via their website or better yet, do it the old school way and order over the phone. Don't be shy, ordering by phone is actually super easy but you might have to yell since it's always so busy on the other line. Orders usually take no longer than 10-15 minutes in my experience. They do a fantastic job of keeping their website updated with their hours and during this holiday time, it is extremely helpful. There is 2 locations and the Grand Ave one being a favorite and longer hours, I believe. If you're in the area, stop by. Probably my favorite burger in the Bay. Today I had a True Deluxe- a cheeseburger with a portabello mushroom stuffed with mozzarella cheese. It comes with tomato and lettuce. I would get this once a week if my doctor allowed me but until I get the okay, I'll stick to it as a delicious treat. The fries are spot on and I've heard but have not experienced the milkshake. I saw that they have a coffee one that I will have to try one of these days. Does your burger meet the hype (of my friend)? True. Best ever? That's hard to say but it's up there. I'll give you best in Oakland. :) My style. True bacon cheeseburger + grilled onions. Ketchup. Yum. Recommend to eat quickly and fresh because bread will get soggy if left alone too long. It's quite saucy. Fries are good but kinda pricey in my opinion. Wish there was some kind of combo price. The garlic fries are good but only if you really like garlic. This ain't no mellow garlic fries. It's the chunks of garlic not quite minced all the way, feel the full spice and fury of garlic type of fries. I like it tho it's super greasy. Anyway to lower the oil amount? :). Either way. Still a near 5 star in my book. Posted a new menu picture for everyone. Was trying to figure out if you had inflated prices when using a delivery app... and you did. TrueBurger is one of my husband and I's go to spots for burgers. It is extremely solid and consistent every time. The ambiance is very casual with counter service and a few tables inside, so we usually get it to go and either eat by the lake which is a short walk or just take it home to eat. The burgers are delicious as are their fries. They even have a tasty veggie option in the Mushroom Burger! My go to order is the bacony cheesy burger and garlic fries (Shoestring fries with a healthy portion of garlic so I wouldn't recommend them for a first date). My husband usually has a healthy appetite but he even feels the "double up" or double patty is a LOT of meat, and maybe too much meat for the bun, so just be warned these are not small patties like you might be used to elsewhere! read more

But they have a beautiful garlic Mayo that bursts with garlicky goodness. The burger is a smashed patty that's crispy and cooked to a perfect medium. The golden fries are thin and crispy, pairing perfectly with the tang of the ketchup. This is the spot if you're craving for the classic American meal. You won't be disappointed. I heard so much hype about this being one of the best burgers in Oakland... and honestly, I think there is some truth to that. I was surprised to see that you can request how you want your burger patty cooked. There are also add-ons on the menu, though I wish they offered a little more (e.g. grilled mushrooms?) I ordered a regular TrueBurger without the garlic mayo and bun, then shared some orders of regular fries and garlic fries. I also added grilled onions. The food itself was great - a little messy, but the patty was nicely portioned and juicy. I'd say it's comparable to Super Duper. Overall a solid-tasting burger! read more

Visited True Burger after about 8 years. I used to live in the neighborhood, and would go by at least twice a month. They still have tasty burgers and custom made shakes. The fries are above average, crispy and tender on the inside. Some of the charm of the place has warn off. The interior needs a redu. But I'd go back more often if I lived in the neighborhood. Satisfying burger that's under $10 - AND crispy fries AND chuggable customized milkshakes! Can't believe I worked down the street and never tried TrueBurger until now. For $8, I got a 5 oz cheesy TrueBurger with all the fixings: lettuce, tomato, grilled onions, pickles, and garlic mayo on a pillowy bun. That's the same price as a 4 oz Super Duper mini-burger! But I was actually stuffed after. The patty and grilled onions are not quite as charred and crispy as an East Coast burger, but it still hits the spot. And there are a bunch of condiments on the side you can spice things up with like picked jalapenos. The $4 garlic fries were the highlight and definitely sharable. Slathered in raw crushed garlic for the spicy bite that most burger places shy away from and fried to a crisp - it probably belongs at a garlic festival. For $6, I also split a vanilla toasted marshmallow shake with my boyfriend. But warning, it's so good you should get your own. I'd probably mix in malt next time. But when I asked the cashier what she'd choose, she said, "I've never had malt." Like woman, please, try your own milkshakes. Yes, perfectly cooked to medium temperature. Was it overpriced? No, not really, it's a double patty with all fresh ingredients for $10. Reasonable enough. Were the employees friendly? I was greeted with a smile and they helped me navigate the menu for what I wanted to order. While we can spend our entire lives seeking true happiness, true wisdom, true love, true success. We came here before a hike in the Fire Trails, and walked away very satisfied. If you're looking for a delicious, higher-calorie meal that doesn't break the bank, this is it. Z. ordered the Cheesy Bacon (Burger with cheese and bacon) and I the True Deluxe (Crispy portobello mushroom with smoked mozz). We shared garlic fries. True Deluxe: This came super crispy and hot. I love the idea of mixing the juicy portobello mushroom with that crispy crust -- it's a very satisfying texture combination. You can discern the smokey mozzarella clearly, and the beef patty was juicy and simply delicious. Also loved the thick slices of tomato and fresh lettuce here. I was less enthused by the bun and garlic mayo -- altogether, it's a little too rich. I ended up eating around the bun/mayo. Z. had the same criticism for his bacon cheesy trueburger -- in the future maybe we'll each just order a TrueBurger and find that this greasiness will be just right. Garlic fries need a little work -- it might help if the fries were cut thicker? And I suspect they use some combination of garlic powder and fresh garlic. Would be awesome if just fresh garlic was used. Until reading their menu online, I hadn't realized that the ground patties are ground daily and have no antibiotics or hormones. After being on my radar for a year, I finally got to try TrueBurger when I was in Oakland around dinner time. I ordered a Cheesy TrueBurger, without lettuce or tomatoes - so just meat, cheese, bun, and garlic mayo. I also got an order of fries (with a side of garlic mayo) and a fountain soda (Pepsi, my fav!). It was definitely a burger made from quality ingredients and was cooked just right . But, the flavor was lacking - it wasn't as beefy and savory as it looked. The fries were good, though! Just for reference, I think Shake Shack burgers are really good (nice beefy flavor, good char taste), as well as Super Duper (very juicy, also good beefy flavor). So, take my review with a grain of salt (ha!) if you don't have similar tastes. One of the people I was with said the burgers were just off that day, so that I should try it again sometime. I'm willing to give it another chance the next time I'm in Oakland and craving a burger! read more

Seriously, a stellar burger. I ordered online for the ease of not having to wait to just pick it up. Their ordering system on the website was easy to use. I love how you can choose how done you can have your burger - in my case medium rare. Granted, it didn't really come out that way. It was closer to a medium, but at least it wasn't overcooked. I hate it when a medium burger comes out medium well. Second, I love how you can accessorize your burger with bacons, mushrooms, extra sauce, no sauce, lite sauce, extra veggies, etc. Third, the prices are amazing. I created an $8.75 burger that would normally cost $12 elsewhere. $0.75 to go from a hamburger to a cheeseburger is unheard of! Adding cheese is normally at least a buck! I know what some of you are thinking - "But it's only $0.25!" That's still a 33% increase... or a 25% savings... whatever it is, it's basically a good deal at TrueBurger. I tried True Burger for the 2nd time. The first time was years ago; maybe around 6 or 7. This time I went to the one on Broadway. Clean restaurant and nice staff. I got the mushroom true cheese burger which is a burger with cheese topped with a crispy whole mushroom that has Swiss stuffed inside. It was ok. Very filling but dry. I only like ketchup and mustard on my burgers so maybe that's my fault. The fries are nasty. They're like those double fried carnival fries. I despise any restaurant that sells those. lol. I will not go again but I see why people like the food. read more
