* Hearty bread from freshly milled grain * Entering this bakery you see a glass window protecting a wooden grain mill where they were milling grain to freshly make the flours for their bread. Can't get fresher than that! They started their business far away from the Okanagan in Cowichan Bay back in 2004. Recently they opened up this new second location in the heart of the Okanagan on Main Street in Summerland. They have a variety of organic grains available including red fife, spelt, and rye. And they also have some that weren't labeled as organic, but seem to come from cleaner sources including Kamut and a series of Vancouver Island Red Spring wheats from smaller farms. The rye bread looked delicious - so couldn't resist getting a loaf. It had a superb crust and a dense crumb. It was dusted in flour (perhaps just a tad too much, but I'm nitpicking). On the way to Osoyoos, we needed to drop by to buy Summerland sweets strawberry syrup for a friend. So, i checked what else is at Summerland. After easy highway driving from Kelowna, i parked right in front of the store. We tried French barguette and it was the best i tried ever; lightly chewy inside. They uses organic ingredients which is a big plus. I wish this bakery is at my neighbourhood... I also tried Just soda: Habanero peach flavour and hmm..it was refreshingly good. This is the BEST bakery in all of BC. The reviewer who commented that the bread went moldy fast is missing the main point: it's bread without preservatives. It's supposed to go moldy if you don't eat it quickly. You want bread that stays soft for a week? Get Wonder Bread. Eat petroleum. You want REAL food? Go to True Grain. Driest, most expensive cookie I've ever had. I don't mind paying a little extra for something good, but this was a horrible high price to pay for a terrible, dry, crumbly cookie. I'm told it was with an ancient grain but to be honest, the cookie tasted ancient. I will not be eating the rest of it. I also got two other pastries. Tasty baked goods, and a cozy atmosphere. We were lured into True Grain Bread by the smell of molasses from a block away. The fresh ginger molasses cookies were amazing! We tried a couple of other baked goods and each were delicious. Their pastries were enough to satisfy the sweet tooth but not your typical sticky sweet treats you'd find at some bakeries. wonderful baked goods. Nothing is overly sweet and is made from milled flour at the location. The service is wonderful and I try to get there as often as I can. Even though I have gluten sensitivities I don't seem to react to their baked goods! Bonus. I was there the other day and the kind lady let me squeeze in one last order (it was 4:58 and they close at 5) and she even gave me some extra treats! One very happy household when i got home.
