We had the tomato basil soup, onion ring, fried pickle (the best), short stack banana pancakes, big daddy breakfast, and sunny side up eggs, toast, and bacons. Stayed in the hotel next door & decided to walk over for a late lunch. (The silver diner exterior was too intriguing to not check out.) I loved the vintage vibes & decor inside. The place was poppin' but were seated & served quickly! The cowboy burger was delicious- bbq sauce, bacon, onion ring. I know it sounds wild that something as simple as bacon can be a highlight, but theirs absolutely is. I was in town for four days and ate breakfast here twice, and I'll be honest, it was because of the bacon. My one gripe has nothing to do with the food: a couple at the table next to me had someone on speakerphone, loud, and it was disrupting the whole side of the diner, myself included. I get that it's a fine line to walk as a business, but I really wished someone had gently said something, because it dampened the experience for everyone nearby. The Food: I ordered the Razzle Dazzle - sirloin tips, three eggs (scrambled), hash browns, and an English muffin. The portion size was very generous, especially for breakfast. The flavor? The steak tips were tender, and the eggs were fluffy - more folded and firm, like on a flattop, than scrambled. The hash browns were delicious - the tops were crispy, but the bottom side was on the soggy side. My lovely wife ordered the Little Cuz, which is biscuits and gravy, one egg, one strip of bacon, and one sausage patty (links available). The bacon or sausage wasn't anything standout, but it was nice and crispy. The biscuit seemed sort of dry, but the gravy saved the dish. It was a nice combination of buttery and sweet but still peppery. We recommend utilizing the sausage patty to beef up the sausage gravy, as it was a bit weak on the sausage. The Service: We arrived around 8:30 on a Monday morning. It wasn't crowded, and we were seated instantly. The staff were friendly and attentive. We ordered soon after being seated and received our food before 9 a.m. Despite being quick, it felt relaxed - nice for a Monday morning! Ambiance: Retro booths, neon signs, Elvis and Marilyn Monroe-covered walls - it definitely feels like stepping back in time. Clearly, a place where locals would stand by loyally, but where tourists should make a definite point to visit as well. Location: Right off 105 near App State campus. Convenient location, but 105 isn't the easiest road to turn onto, so keep that in mind. Parking is easy; it's not difficult to find either. read more

Shout out to Troy's Diner on Hwy 105; Boone, NC! They are the BOMB! Can't go wrong with any menu item. The cooks, waitstaff and owners/managers go the extra mile. We had a reservation because we were a large group. And they only had one table that would fit us. Half of our group arrived early but we were told to wait because all of us had be there! Ok, fine. When the rest of our group arrived on time, the server pointed to the one table where there was one large man sitting, and said, sorry it's taken. At that point, we should have left because that was rude and unprofessional especially since we had called very early to reserve the one table. I said, why did you seat one person at a table for 8 when we reserved and were already here. She said, sorry he lied but we can't ask him to leave. But we stayed and had the choice to cram everyone into a small table meant for 4, and we were 7, or leave. But we stayed because my nephew loves this place. I honestly don't know why. The food was ok but just your average diner fare. Our server was wonderful and the only reason for 3 stars. When we left an hour later, the lone man was still sitting at the table and there was a long line waiting to be seated. Really? Unbelievable. I certainly will not return. read more

I have been going to this place through several name changes, ownership changes and most recently I have noticed that it has gone downhill. This last visit was my least favorable experience and here are some of the reasons: I ordered my standard 'Veggie Plate' which usually comes with four vegetable selections and I chose mac & cheese (yes, it counts as a veggie in the south), fried okra, mashed potatoes and green beans. The waiter/waitress came back to say they were out of mac and cheese (it was between 6:30-7pm) and asked if I would like to choose another item. I said, sure, just substitute a side salad with ranch. When the food came out the okra was greasy and not hot, obviously been sitting around for a couple of hours, maybe since lunch service. Same with the mashed potatoes, gluey and luke warm at best. The biscuit that comes with the meal could have very well been leftover from breakfast. When the bill arrived, she charged me the full price of the Four Veggie plate, in addition to a 'house salad', bringing the total to over $12. (It lists the price for the veggie plate as $7.95.) I didn't even complain or raise my issue because it was just not a good experience from start to finish. I will probably return because it is convenient to the house but it may be a while. I know the former owner passed away and I heard his kids took it over and I hope they are just working through the transition, because this used to be one of my go-to's. I'll give them 3 stars but this particular visit was a 2 for sure. read more

I thought everything was pretty average at best. I did like that they offered sirloin tips. Server asked how I'd like it prepared. I chose medium rare, but it came medium-well to well done. They gave a good amount of eggs, but I thought they were a bit dry. Toast was standard. Husbands eggs were standard. and the bacon was a bit thin. He liked his grits. It was creamy with butter already added to it. The biscuit wasn't the flaky biscuit with layers he was expecting, but it did have flavor. The decor is bright and fun. A true diner experience. Humorous signs on the walls, no one at a slow pace. They rushing to clear tables for the next guests, but you are never rushed to order. The food is good and there is plenty of dishes to choose from. Desserts are also great. We were shocked when our favorite breakfast spot in Blowing Rock closed. On the weekends we enjoy driving up for breakfast then exploring the various trails etc. Anyways the hunt was on for a new breakfast spot. Someone recommended Troy's 105 Diner and I think we found our NEW spot! As the name implies it's an old school diner which looks great! The service has always been friendly and fast and the breakfast options are great. I typically like to have eggs and french toast and they do have a menu option for that.
