I heard about Mary's kitchen from FB and wanted to try it out. It is small but definitely cooks just like Mom used to make. I had an old country favorite of mine, liver mush, scrambled eggs, grits and biscuit. They kept my coffee cup full and I really enjoyed the hometown ambiance where no one is a stranger, just friends they haven't met yet. Yup, they get five stars on "Yelp" for a reason! We were looking for a place that did NOT cater to tourists. The first tip-off we might like this place is they open early. Not only was the food and service good, the nice server, who also cooks on some days, explained HOW they made the wonderful eggs and hashbrowns. I first tried to visit on Monday but they were closed with no signs about closure, so I wasn't sure if it was for the holidays or the hours were messed up. This location is definitely a bit off the beaten path, and it's a very basic local joint. If you are looking for affordable options and okay portions, this is your place. My sole purpose in seeking this place out not once, but twice, was the chocolate gravy. I grew up eating chocolate gravy in rural Mississippi and it is so rare to see on the menu that it pushed this place to the top of the list. They were out of the chocolate gravy. I tried to order peanut butter pancakes, and they were out of that too. Finally I just tried to get a one egg breakfast with tenderloin but guess what...they were out of that too. I finally just asked for the chocolate chip pancake and given the option of city or country ham, went with city ham because I wasn't ready for that much sodium this early. The pancake was a great size, pretty thick, and came with a generous amount of chocolate chips. The ham tasted fine but flavor on my food was pretty basic. I will say the one thing that stood out a little was the hash browns - I don't quite know how they are prepping the hash browns but there was an almost potato chip crisp on the edges that was very nice. Soft drinks were served in 20 ounce bottles, so I'm not sure why they could not get a container of cocoa powder or peanut butter in...but that's none of my business. ‍ She said they had been missing a lot of the stuff they needed on their delivery truck. I am teetering between a 4 and a 5 on this one... Mary's Kitchen is a funny little find, almost in the middle of residential living/neighborhood, you can ONLY pay cash ( there is a sign on the front door), and you must be willing to have an open mind. Per my pictures, you can easily see that the inside is not very nice... or maybe not even nice at all! This all said...the food is FANTASTIC! I would highly recommend anything and everything on the menu here as I felt like we ordered one of everything due to the low prices! If you want a yummy homemade meal, and you don't care what the place looks like- this is the stop for you!!! A perfect little country find! OH! and "Mary" is actually cooking in the back... which is just too cute! read more

Love this place! My husband first ate here when he attended App State and he said it hasn't changed one bit. Mary was in the back cooking and her husband greeted us when we walked in. We had the cheese omelette, biscuits and gravy, chocolate chip pancakes, egg and bologna biscuit and Hash browns. Everything was cooked perfectly and delicious. We all cleaned our plates. I've been to Mary's twice for breakfast. The first time, they were out of biscuits and my breakfast was on the house. It was delicious even with no biscuits and the service was excellent. I returned this morning and thoroughly enjoyed their gravy biscuit. This is a small, locally owned and operated restaurant with friendly staff and an old school atmosphere. Give them a try if you like that sort of thing. If not, go to the Waffle House or Cracker Barrel. read more

Simple, honest, salt of the earth food. Located away from the hub of town. The folks here I call high school local(they, their kids go or graduated from here), not local as moved here five years ago. Breakfast was good old fashioned flat top cooked. Plenty of butter made the hash browns extra crispy. Eggs cooked to order. All was flavorful. Horrible food, very disappointed. I ordered Salisbury steak because they were out of BBQ and it tasted like grade school cafeteria food. Fries were old and rock hard. Slaw was bland.
