The only things u can take home with you have to be wrapped in a napkin. So if someone at your table wants more of anything the whole serving is wasted. Came in after for dinner after hearing some recommendations from other folks staying at the same hotel I was at. I know it's been mentioned before but it's family style and you get a little bit of everything. The fried chicken was good but I really enjoyed the hamburger steak. That was delicious. All the sides are good. I know I'm in the minority it I didn't enjoy the hamburger steak over everything. I also enjoyed their strawberry preserves and slathered it on the biscuits. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was the chocolate cake. It was too rich for me. The register lady told me that it could have been the icing. However I did ask for the strawberry short cake and that was perfect. Service here was really good. I felt like I was checked on repeatedly and I never went without anything. Arrived Sunday morning around 10am and it wasn't terribly busy. Waited around 15 minutes then got seated. Service was very polite and attentive. We had an awesome meal here over the weekend. We came for lunch, but get here early cause they stay busy. It's set in like an old big farmhouse and everyone dresses the part. Good home cooking southern style food. It looked like mostly college students working here which makes sense with App State right down the street. First of all, this place has been around forever, the restaurant is very well maintained and we got a table by the window was able to see the great landscaping. The service is excellent, staff were super friendly and they are quick and caring. The concept is simple, it is All you can eat family style, you don't have to order they will just brings you everything from side dishes, to biscuits to the fried chicken to desserts. If you want more of something just ask. It was a great experience. I really like the country fried steak, it was great with the gravy. All the dessert and side dishes also excellent. The plain biscuits were great, but the country ham was so salty, I am not used to the taste. Also the fried chicken breading was so salty too, the chicken cooked well but way too salty. We stopped here because of the cute historic building of the Inn and Restaurant for lunch while passing through town. The servers were polite and we had taken a chance on the menu since we had been traveling quite a distance and were plain hungry. The minute we were seated we were told it's a family style buffet and our food would be brought to us with "all you can eat" . We weren't told the price, but figured it couldn't be much given the over cooked chicken, Salisbury steak, what tasted like canned corn, green beans, instant mashed potatoes, dry cake to finish the meal off. The price was $25.00 each. Not planning on recommending this place for the food...no idea what the accomodations are like.. It's Best to check first before visiting and staying. read more

Exceptional customer service and delicious food -- Daniel Boone Inn is a gem! We visited this past September and arrived close to closing time, but the staff didn't bat an eye or make us feel rushed. They were friendly and welcoming the entire time, and service was impressively fast. The food is served family style, and it's packed with all the Southern staples you'd expect -- fried chicken, green beans, mac and cheese, country ham, biscuits, and more. And if you want refills on anything, just ask! The mac and cheese was soooo good; I couldn't stop eating it. You even get your choice from 3 desserts at the end. We loved all 3 but the Strawberry Shortcake was the favorite of the table. One thing to note -- it's cash only. But don't worry, they do accept personal checks (even out-of-state ones!) and there's an ATM in the lobby if you need it. I also loved how they've preserved the history of the building, which was once a hospital and inn. While we waited to be seated, we enjoyed checking out the mini museum on the wall, which adds to the charm of the place. Overall, fantastic food, great service, and a unique setting. My wife and I walked in about 30 minutes after opening. We stoped at the sign that said "please wait to be seated". We stood there for at least five minutes and then heard the "hostess" call someone's name down the hallway. Our minds immediately go to "oh we're in the wrong place" so we walked down to get our name on the list. The hostess then walks us all the way back to where we were....my main thing here is why did no one come to us for over 5 minutes of standing at the exact sign we were suppose to be at in the first place. Then the "hostess" seats us without any menus. We sat there for another 10 minutes with no service. We ended up walking out and going somewhere with better service. It's very disappointing since my family and I use to come here a lot when I was younger. Needless to say we won't be back and we will not recommend this place to anyone. My family and I, have ate hear numerous times and it's always been wonderful. Fried chicken, steak and gravy, mashed potatoes, corn, fried apples, etc. Then there are those biscuits and country ham. I ate here 30 years ago, 5 years ago and yesterday. Food is strictly comfort food served family style. Fried chicken, stewed apples and country ham biscuits are favorites. They will bring more of everything but service overall is very slow and staff are likely students and not the best trained. Skip the dessert cobbler as it is mostly crust and doughy. The Dan'l Boone Inn has been serving family style food for over 50 years, so it's something of an institution in this part of the High Country. It's a spot most folks want to visit at least once, and now that we've done that we don't see much reason to go back. A restaurant, after all, is or should be, all about the food. And the food here for us was pretty close to average at best. Yes, it has lots of atmosphere and the servers are nice and efficient, but the food they put on our table just wasn't really tasty. Biggest disappointment: the vegetables, whether corn or beans or potatoes, everything came up bland, as if it came from a can. They could do better. The fried chicken and country steak were not bad, but honestly, you can find much better at a number of restaurants in this area. The lines for diners here, especially on weekends, can be very lengthy, and they accept only cash, making this not the most convenient stop for a lot of us. If eating here is on your bucket list, go ahead. But we'd suggest re-doing that bucket list if the food matters to you. read more

Meal started with a salad with house-made ranch dressing. I'm not a fan of ranch dressing so I passed on the salad. It looked like it was slathered in the dressing; a bit too much for my tastes. The meal and sides served that day (I'm not sure if they change) were bone-in fried chicken, country steak, mashed potatoes, green beans, corn, coleslaw, white gravy, baked apples, and the country ham biscuits. The dark meat chicken was tender and juicy but the white meat chicken was rather dry. The mashed potatoes were average and didn't have much flavor. The green beans were very sweet and I was expecting them to be salty or smoky. This is the South, green beans are usually seasoned with pork, right? The country steak was very simple; it was like a chopped steak with onions, similar to a Salisbury steak, I guess. The apples were very good and had a lot of spice. The country ham wasn't as salty as I expected, but I probably tolerated the saltiness since the entire table lacked flavor, but the texture was like that of shoe leather. The biscuits were pretty good and soft. I didn't have the corn, coleslaw, or white gravy. I highly doubt I ate my money's worth. I'm glad I came just to say I've been here, and of course, to hang out with friends. Family Style Sunday Lunch and a great chance to beat the heat down in the Piedmont. In the Lake Norman area, last Sunday was oppressive in terms of heat with temperatures in the mid to high 90's and heat index greater than 100. Decided to get with friends and drive to the High Country around Boone, Blowing Rock to beat the heat and have a leisurely lunch away where it was cooler. I ate at the Dan'l Boone Inn probably 30+ years ago but no one else had. It's a old style of Southern Dining called family style. They bring our a moderate amount of each dish and as you eat, they keep refilling each individually till you are finished. If you did not like something, you would just tell no more of that one. The only exception was the fresh country ham biscuits which had a limit of two per individual. In other words, it's all you can eat. For lunch we had Country Ham Biscuits, Fried Chicken, County Style Steak, Mashed Potatoes and Gravy on the Side, Corn off the Cob and Green Beans and I may still be leaving off a few. For desert, you have a choice of three and personally I had the Strawberry Shortcake. In general, everything was good although the Country Style Steak left something to be desired and it should be noted, I don't eat green beans. Dining area is a little of the rustic side with some touches of Pennsylvania Dutch to it. Gift shop is nice. Service was very good. Our server was nice and attentive although a bit slow on some of the refills. The gardens outside were outstanding and apparently we caught it at the perfect time with everything in bloom. Please forgive me but there is a series of shots where I was trying to catch the Bumblebee's being Bumblebee's. A bit touristy but still good right in the heart of downtown Boone. read more
