I've found deliverance in this place. I've lived in the DMV for 8 months now and I've searched far and wide for a Jamaican spot to ease my cravings now and again and by George, I think I've found it. Just this week I've eaten there 3 times, which is unheard off for me. I've had the jerk chicken, oxtail and the curry goat and some of my husband's red peas soup. The soup tastes like home! I always get the jerk chicken, which is extremely spicy, so be careful ; the curry chicken, which is by far the best curry chicken I've ever had, and the brown stew chicken, which is mouth watering. I like to save my money of course so I only go for lunch, which is 11 AM - 2 PM ( M- F ) you get a free pop with the meal as well. I've been going to this spot for about 1 year and have never incurred any issue. Yesterday however, I ordered my usual Curry Goat for me and jerk chicken for wifey. There was only 1 other customer in the building when I placed my order. Said customer got her food quickly and left the building. I on the other hand had to wait about 10 additional minutes for my order. When ordering I asked for wifeys sauce on the side. Got home and showered while wifey started eating her meal (About 3:30p) she mentioned that her food was , "Hot as shit" and I was puzzled because her sauce came on the side in a totally different container. Well, I started eating my Curry Goat and had to stop 1/4 of the way into it when my mouth caught fire! I ran to the bathroom to start rinsing my my mouth and throw water over my head. I used to come here a few times for their jerk or curry chicken with rice and peas, plantains and cabbage. This place is pretty good, nothing too special. For the cost, you get a lot of food which is pretty filling the meat is seasoned pretty well. There have been times were the food has been a bit bland. Customer service isn't the best but it's an okay place to visit if you're in the area and craving Caribbean/Jamaican food. Their coco bread and Jamaican beef patty are delicious! The best part of Silver Spring is that huge variety of different foods you can try. And boyyyyyyyyy Tropicana is by far one of my most favorite places to go in the area. I am super forunate enough to live about 8 mins away from them. I always order the small jerk chicken with the gravy on the side. It comes with cabbage and rice. **Buy an extra gravy for 25 cents.ITS AMAZING** (Also, they can only sell 1 extra gravy side per customer due to high demand) Even though I order a small, this is enough food for two whole meals. The Jerk Spice is actually hot AND FLAVORFUL!! I can't tell you how many "Jamaican" eateries I've been to and the Jerk is mild. So if you try anything first, go for the jerk chicken! The roti with curry chicken was pretty average compared to other places and I still haven't had the opportunity to try the goat. As a Haitian from NYC I had low expectations, but this place definitely surpassed them! I LOVED the brown stew chicken. I only wished they had an option JUST for the stew chicken so that I could only have that. They do however, have an 'JERK CHICKEN' only option. I ordered an oxtail and stew chicken since I couldn't decide between them so I ordered both. The oxtail left a lot to be desired. They weren't as meaty and flavorful as the ones Ive had in NYC. This was my absolute worst Restaurant experience during COVOID-19 although Maryland is in phase 1 that should never matter when your cooking and handling food. Washing your hands and putting on a pair of glove should be the first thing being done. It was sooo delicious and A LOT of food (which I love to see in a restaurant). Most Caribbean (and other foreign restaurants) hold back on their spices to conform to "western tastebuds", but not them the food was spicy and delicious. Just tink about it; Jerk Chicken, Oxtail, Curried Goat, Rice and Beans, Plantains, ... me mout water when I day dream about it. So what do I do? I come here to Tropicana! Myself, I am always a fan boy of oxtail and curried goat. The oxtail is braised long and slow to break down all that ooey-gooey gelatin and to get that meat to fall off the bone. Sometimes, I get lucky to get a piece that has marrow in it. The ox is rich and deep with that earthy beef flavor which is perfectly seasoned. If you enjoy tendon and broken down connective tissue along with your meat, then this is absolutely perfect for you. The curry goat is deliciously gamey and flagrant. Very bold flavors upfront from the curry with lingering notes of goat at the finish. The pieces of goat served here are slightly bigger than most places, which is a huge plus. This is a must try if you enjoy bold flavors with a subtle kick. read more

I've never been denied of any order but they did have to make sure they had enough before we paid for our order. Today I had a large oxtail which was very tender and flavorful. The rice and cabbage was very tasty. We asked for a side of jerk sauce cause it's a nice spicy kick. The sauce is delicious on anything! The jerk chicken though.... You know how sometimes people tell you to be careful because something is spicy and all you're left with is disappointment? Well this was clearly NOT the case. The jerk had a definite kick and a very good flavor. It may not have been the best chicken by itself, but with the jerk sauce its well worth it. Definitely also ask for the hot/pepper sauce if you're a fan of habanero level spice. I can definitely say this really satisfied my craving for Jamaican curry and jerk. I went on 1/5/18 and first let me say the restaurant was freezing cold on the inside. It was warmer outside! And this week in Washington DC the temperature was between 12-20 Degrees!!!!! I tried to call ahead to place my order and no one picked up the phone. I ordered brown stew chicken and it taste like tomatoes with sugar. I am on my never-ending quest to find quality Caribbean food. So today I decided I would try this spot. First of all I was a little surprised that the area was a little sketchy being in Montgomery County. There was a lot of "activity" in the area so just watch your surroundings. Whenever I go into any Caribbean restaurant I prepare to feel like that episode of Seinfeld where they're ordering soup. Do not expect to feel overly welcomed just be ready to order. But being from New York I am used to that nor do I take offense. It's just how these places tend to be. So we ordered the oxtails and jerk chicken. As is usual with oxtails at Caribbean restaurants it's more bone and fat than anything. But the meat that was there was flavorful. The gravy was more liquidy than I preferred. And the jerk chicken was not that traditional grilled jerk chicken with brown sauce. It was that jerk chicken that comes with that reddish kind of hot sauce. I was not a fan. The cabbage was good. The veggie patties were also good. And of course they forgot to add the plantains for both meals. So in all I can't give more than three stars I almost want to give two and a half. But my standards are very high when it comes to Caribbean food. But I'll keep searching not sure I would try this one again. Maybe for the veggie patties. read more
