The DC spot has been a staple for Jamaican food for YEARS though and always seemed to be the go to for authentic Jamaican food. Crazy enough, I never actually tried Tropicana until recently and now mi understand why people love this place so much. I got the oxtail and brown stew chicken with cabbage on the side only and babyyyyy...everything was delicious. The meat was tender, flavorful, and the portions were LARGE. They definitely nah skimp pon di food. The service was decent. Not bad, not exceptional, just quick and straightforward. I went in the afternoon so I was able to get my food and go without any long wait. The decor is a little rundown with the flag, vibrant colors, pics of Bob Marley and other famous Jamaicans. The spot was of course playing reggae music. The place is easy to miss since it's on the corner of the strip mall. Parking is probably the biggest headache because the lot is super small and hard to maneuver without almost clipping another car. I've been going here once or twice a month for the last 4 or 5 years. The one thing that I like about it is that it's very consistent. I order the same thing and it always pretty much tastes exactly the same. They do a great job with their vegetables and rice and peas. Im born Caribbean, if you go to any Caribbean spot and the coco bread is dry in the middle then that'll tell you. I went here and after the dry coco bread I still gave them a chance and i got a jerk chicken meal. The rice wasnt cooked all the way. The chicken had a weird "leftover" type of taste. Always happy when I can pass by Tropicana and catch the lunch special. When I first moved to MD I lived closer to this location and enjoyed trying their curry chicken and jerk chicken. I really enjoy how they always pour some of the curry gravy over the rice and peas. I also love the heat on their jerk sauce just right! Sometimes I've gotten vegetables with my meal that hasn't always been consistent but flavors have been. The ambiance is simple and brings me back to Caribbean spots I've eaten at when I lived in New York. I don't need a fancy aesthetic just a good meal and good price point. I haven't had an issue with service ever, the ladies have always been easy to work with and ready to complete my order at the time of service. The portions were large enough for me to have for lunch & dinner on Saturday. As you can see the curry chicken had No juice to it. Good Carribean food is really hard to find, the ones you will find are overly priced! The menu wasn't initially posted on here so I had posted it when I went there, the price is decent compared to other spots. The food is good but not the best. I am used to my fish being made to order. I've had their veggie pattie before and that is the best pattie I have ever had but as far as their other items, it's not bad but just not the best. It was pretty late so they were closing in 5 minutes when I walked in...i really had to try this place though-so i took the chance (i know how ppl hate it when someone walks in 4 minutes before they close). I ordered to go - small ox tail, small jerk chicken and coco bread. DONE. Served in a tin foil container, FRESH, hot, soft coco bread in a brown paper bag - all for under $15. It was torture having that aroma of flavor invade the inside of my car as i drove home. Considering , that the food they gave me was the "last batch"...it is far from it. THE Jerk chicken was packed with spices and flavor...and the spice definitely bites you later - kind of like a late reaction to something funny. You know it's Jamaican food, and you know it's going to be spicy but it doesn't hit you until later. Compared to the Jamaican Jerk i've had before, Tropicana's is VERY FRESH, tender and so juicy! I know spices tend to "dry-out" meat a lot. But Tropicana must know some sort of secret to have their jerk chicken be so tender and juicy...but still TASTE all those spices. I bumped into this place by accident. When I got there, the place's quite empty and the workers're just talking to their friend quite loudly, kinda unprofessional. Their food's pre-made and are just being heated in these pans, kinda like buffet style. However, I decided to give this place a try anyways. I had their Curried Goat ($9) that came with 2 Side Dishes (Bunch of Veggies, Mashed Potato or Rice). I must say that their portion's really huge!!! I couldn't even finish the sucker and had to take some of it home. The goat's pretty nicely seasoned, it's not bad. The curry itself is decently good as well. I actually liked the veggies more, they taste good with the seasoned rice with some curried sauce on top. Overall - The portion's worth your money.
